I have retained John off and on, since 2001, for both civil and criminal cases and let me say that he takes a very personal part in his approach to achieving the very best outcome for his client. ive also known others that have used John's services, and they were pleased with their outcomes. Along the course of the situation, Ive always felt very optimistic with the future and the ouycome because of having John Helmers at the Helm. Additionally, John's father was an Army lawyer (JAG); therefore, John feels a commitment to working with veterans, such as myself, and fully understands our ways of thinking. John's fees are comparable to most, but I strongly feel your money is used to achieve the best results. there are cheaper attorneys, but you then get results, where your concerns could be overlooked, and you'll just be another number and not a more personal approach. The judge sent my kids, my ex wife and myself to see this lawyer. I paid half the bill and my ex wife had to pay the other half. Now I keep getting a bill for her half. He said I should be in my kids life but I never heard anything back from the judge or the lawyer. That was suppose to review our case he was over with us. Biggest waste of my life and time. I still haven't heard anything and it's been 1 yr now. The justice system has failed my kids. June the 20th of 2012 my son called 911 on his mother and the courts never even tried to pull the recording. Two weeks later he ran away. I'll never forget that day, but the judges and lawyer sure will. Sad world we all live in. Now, I live for the day that my children turn 18 so their mother can't keep them away. Nothing was ever resolved in my case. And now,my children and I are growing older without one another. Good luck on finding a fair justice system for your kids and yourself.

Jonathan refused to do his job what he was asked to do, then he walked out in the middle of the case without notice and didn’t finish the case. Totally unprofessional. Kept retainer money and never returned it. Total failure and waste of time and money!

I would never recommend Emily Crockett for any legal needs she was very unhelpful and uninterested like it was a waste of her time. She did as little as possible to be able to say she did her job. Found another family law attorney in Louisville and couldn't be happier with the results I received from them.

This place is one of if not the worst law firms I’ve ever dealt with. First they stuck you with some junior lawyer who doesn’t know what he is doing and has zero confidence, so they have to ask for help from other lawyers in the firm so next thing you know your paying three lawyers to do one lawyers work. Nothing ever got resolved regarding the matter at hand the billing was borderline criminal in what they were charging. Why should I have to pay three different lawyers because the original lawyer didn’t know what in the hell he was doing? I mean so I basically paid thousands of dollars to a lawyer who didn’t know anything so he went and consulted two more lawyers within the firm, then billed me for his lack of knowledge or experience. Stay. Away from This place

Wasted 10 months of our time, talked a big game that he did not follow through on and did nothing to represent us when we finally got our day in front of the judge after months of it being postponed, Do not waste your time just spend the extra money from the start and hire an attorney who will do what they say they are going to do for you. I wish I would’ve read the reviews closer before I hired him. Starting from scratch with someone who knows how to represent their clients!!!

We hired Kuhn for a child custody case. He never made any real progress, not even filing the proper paperwork, and was impossible to reach. We settled for claiming HALF our retainer just to move on with our lives and found a much better lawyer. They're not all full of excuses and unreasonably difficult to reach; just the bad ones.

This place is nothing but a joke & a waste of tax dollars! They only help people who are on government assistance because they want to be able to count it towards the assistance their getting so they can lower the help they provide. But for people who actually work they could care less. They say they do what's in the best interest of the child but if it doesn't benefit them they don't do anything. You basically have to do the work yourself to no avail. Workers never call you back & assist those who fail to pay with not paying smh. Shut it down or clear house & start over! Pitiful!

We hired Ms. Birkhold based on her explicit and repeated written and verbal assertion that she would be able to handle my wife’s divorce from her ex-husband, get his parental right terminated, and help me adopt our daughter. Once the divorce was final, we inquired as to what the next step was. At that time, Ms. Birkhold informed my wife that she was not licensed in the state of Ohio and could assist us no further. My wife sent multiple e-mails to Ms. Birkhold asking why she had told us that she could help us with the entire process if she knew all along that she couldn’t and she never even gave us the courtesy of a reply. We were devastated, disappointed, and shocked. After being so close to being able to move on as a family, to be told by the lawyer that was supposed to be protecting us that she lied to us from the beginning… I have never been so disappointed in a professional businessperson in my life. She never even apologized, she just stopped communicating with us. Ms. Birkhold’s behavior is repugnant for a legal professional and businessperson.

I hired this guy to handle my family law case involving a child suport matter a few yrs ago. I only hired him because I had legal insurance thru my work at the time and was very short on cash so hiring him I got a discount. I took him his retainer and he dragged the case out for little over a year without even asking me if thats what I wanted to do in the case. He would tell me to be sure I showed up early for court then most the time he would either be late or right on time for court leaving me sitting there for 45 mins waiting for no reason. Then on the several of these times when we went to court he say he was going to talk to the judge real fast he would come back saying it was postponed but he got somethings worked out and he would agree I'd do things that I wasnt even capable of doing. If you hire this clown you will be very disappointed If I knew how to report him or had the money to sue him for my money back I wouldve done it. I'd try and call him and he would never be in the office Id leave message for him with paralegal and I'd never get a return call from him. I'd have to call and call for about two wks before ever getting him. Id try emailing him that wouldnt work either I finally got to where I'd call him at home about 8pm. He would get mad because I called him at home but figured he is my lawyer and works for me so if he doesnt return my calls at the office then Im calling you at home. I told him from the start I was tight on a budget so if I needed money for anything I needed to know ahead time. Then one day he calls said were going do remediation idk what it was really so I showed up and his thing he said to me was "I hope you have your checkbook because these meetings can get expensive. They judge charges $300 a hour and you and your ex with split the cost. He will expect to be paid today." I didnt have that kinda cash so philip ended up paying for it with firms money then me and my wife had to have a yard sale and sell most everything we owned plus half the kids stuff just to pay the firm back. Had Id know ahead of time we couldve got some money saved up before hand. Then after I paid for all of this the other party decided she didnt want to agree to it and since the remedation judge hadnt filled it yet it wasnt a legal document even tho it was signed by all parties according to philip cade and he wouldnt even try to fight it for me all he wanted to do was do remediation again which i wouldnt agree to. He always wanted to agree with whatever the other party wanted no matter how rediculous it was me and philip have had more then one heated conversation during the time he was my lawyer. If he tells you to meet him some place for a meeting he was always late. One time I waited over a hour in a hallway of his new albany office because the door was locked and he wasnt there. He would never call to say he was running late I usually waited longer in the hallway for him to get there then I spent talking to him because he wouldnt want to listen to much of anything I had to say. Not to mention my wife would try tell him things and he wouldnt even give her the time of day he would cut her off and act like she wasnt even talking. I could go on and on about how poor of a lawyer this guy is If you want to know more feel free to contact me if this site allows you to email its users. FOR ANYONE THINKING OF USING THIS GUY PLEASE PLEASE CONSIDER OTHER LEGAL OPTIONS FIRST!!!

Mr. Ackerson was retained as the estate attorney for my mother's estate. This matter should have been cut and dry. However, because of Ackerson's incompetence and his lack of communication, I was forced to obtain a personal attorney to protect my inheritance. I would not recommend this attorney. To make matters worse, the estate was presented with an exorbitant fee which had to reduced by the probate judge.

My experience with Diana Skaggs is she is only interested in billable hours. Three years after my divorce settlement, my ex-husband poked holes in our maintenance agreement, and I emailed Ms. Skaggs with a simple question. I understood I would have to compensate her for advice. However, her advice was to make an appointment. For that, I received a bill for $37.00. I find it appalling that she billed me to read an email. Not only did the agreement she negotiated for me fall apart, costing me tens of thousands of dollars, but she charged me $37 for zero services. I would not, and did not, retain this attorney again.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
