Jeremy Henderson was recommended to me by a friend. I was a little uncertain at first about his ability to handle my case (a very complex situation that I had completely messed up by trying to handle it myself) because he hadn't been practicing very long, but he immediately proved his competency. What I needed was a peacemaker and Jeremy fit the bill perfectly. He worked very hard trying to resolve my situation without conflict and still stood his ground firmly without backing down. When it became obvious that my case was going to court, Mr. Henderson proved to be a warrior, as well. He was very thorough and kept me informed about everything. And, unlike most lawyers I have used in the past, he explained everything so that I could clearly understand. When a legal decision needed to be made, we made it together. He tried very hard to get to know me personally and understand what my objectives were and showed me ways I could help myself. I tried to handle my own case because I had been badly burned by so many attorneys in the past and I just didn't trust lawyers. But .I can honestly say that I completely trust Mr. Henderson. He has proven himself to be competent, honest and trustworthy. I will continue to use his services whenever I need a legal warrior. I highly recommend Jeremy Henderson.

DON'T HIRE ANYONE ELSE! Roanne has been my lawyer for the last 3 years and has been incredible! My divorce was uncontested and finalized within 6 months of filing however, because my ex was abusive, we have had a very messy custody battle complete with social services reviews, custody evaluations, protective orders, and criminal trials. Roanne has been there every step of the way. She is very easy to get into contact with, responds quickly, always returns phone calls within hours, no mater if the office is open or not. She goes through each detail of the case with a fine-toothed comb, collecting/requesting whatever necessary evidence is needed. She has been ahead of the game through my entire divorce/custody battle; filing motions and requests before my ex does and preventing them from blindsiding us. When we file, she has always thoroughly explained what may happen (how the ex's lawyer may respond/file) in response to the filings, and she has been right EVERY time. She is by far the most moral and ethical person I've ever met. When my ex hurt my children and was criminaly charged, she admitted to me that she was not equipped to handle the child abuse portion of the case and helped me to find a lawyer that could. She and the child abuse lawyer currently work together on our custudy case. I have the upmost respect for Roanne because of that. Instead of exploiting the opportunity to collect more money, she admitted she was ill-equipped for that portion (without being asked) and then went above and beyond in helping me find another lawyer to help. Due to her honesty, my children are now safe and doing well. She is extremely knowledgable in family law/custduy/divorce and always realistic. She gives me the facts and never inflates our chances of winning. Roanne will often tell me "Our chances are good, but anything can happen". She has repeatedly told me she'll never promise we'll win because of that. That being said, Roanne has moved mountains to ensure the safety of my children and continues to do so. I have recommended several friends who are in custody battles or are facing divorce to her. They are all equally pleased. Additionally, she is afforadble (I tell her she doesn't charge enough) and easy to work with on a payment plan. I can not speak highly enough of Roanne. She is genuinely a great lawyer, and a great person. Hire her.

Hilary was part of the McCabe Russell team assisted me during my divorce and contempt cases. It was such a hard time and two children were involved and Hilary was always very quick with a response that was easy to understand. She helped make the experience as low impact as possible. It was and still is a hard thing I have had to deal with but I would highly recommend her as part of your team. I truly enjoyed working with her as there is so much paperwork that had to be done and so many questions that came up when I was trying to work out what was best for the children. I benefitted on how reliable she was and how she always had answers. I would highly recommend her in any family law situation. I am sure she would handle any situation she was called to in a professional and meaningful way.

When my spouse died, Ms. Schifter provided invaluable help in the myriad of details that needed to be attended to that I did not want to handle on my own - from handling probate to contacting agencies,, banks, social security, etc. She made a difficult time effortless for me. I highly recommend using her. We had used her services to do our wills and powers of attorney and liked her clear explanations and advice so it was natural to turn to her when my spouse died.

Ms. Meiselman is a phenomenal attorney that I would and have recommended to other individuals. She is a very compassionate individual who has served as my attorney in a child custody/visitation case. Ms. Meiselman provided support and guidance to help me through this exceptionally difficult and trying time. During the past three years, I have found her to be extremely knowledgeable and well versed in several aspects of the law. She is an attorney whose passion for and commitment to the judicial system is to be commended. She is the attorney you want an attorney who is fair, honest, and will fight tirelessly.

My husband and I were in need of updated estate planning documents after the birth of our first child. I wanted to work with an attorney that was both knowledgeable and personable. My experience with Stephanie exceeded my expectations. She worked with my husband and I to ensure that the documents carried out our wishes. Estate planning can sometimes turn into what may feel like an endless list of possibilities or varied outcomes. As a parent of a young child, you can get lost in trying to accommodate so many contingencies. Stephanie was excellent at keeping my husband and I focused on the bigger picture. I would highly recommend Stephanie to anyone that is need of an estate planning attorney.

I supervise trust operations for a bank and Anne has advised me in a number of different capacities, both with clients and with internal trust company matters. Anne doesn't shoot from the hip-- she will provide you with a precise, accurate answer and if it is a complex matter that needs research, she will respond promptly and with spot on relevant advice. For someone so intelligent and detail oriented, you would think that her communications would be overly complex and difficult to comprehend. Not so. Anne is a master of simple, effective communications. There have also been moments when I've leaned on her in situations of risk. Her excellent judgment, compassion and experience working with a wide variety of clients came to bear to lead me through a few difficult client situations. And importantly at such times, she was extremely responsive. If Anne is your lawyer and you need her, she will make herself available. Needless to say, I'm overjoyed that Anne is on my side.

Let me tell you about Attorney Caleb Griffin. This guy proved himself worthy of hire. If you take note of the title you'll notice I said "my lawyer". He was very knowledgeable in the law and saved me a ton of money. He was open and transparent about everything taking place as things became available. I would recommend him to anyone seeking a lawyer if you're seeking integrity, fairness, and affordability. This guy will smile with you. He will cry with you. He'll even give you spiritual guidance, if you want it.

John Dondero has been an excellent choice for my divorce as well as a car accident (I was hit by a negligent driver) and a small dispute with an insurance company. He is easy to work with, sharp and strategic as they come, experienced and savvy. But the best part is that unlike all the other lawyers in town, he drives to the finish line no matter what obstacles must be hurdled. All this but he's soft-spoken, charming, a great listener and carries out all his tasks with utmost integrity.

The bottom line is that Mr. Lebowitz gets results. He handled my car accident case that another attorney did not want to take to court and we won. Mr Caldwell represented me in a criminal case (which is why I want to keep this post anonymous); I was falsely accused of assaulting a police officer in Washington, DC. Mr Caldwell was masterful in the courtroom; it was clear that he was very experienced and knowledgeable in these matters. It was a muddy case because the police did not tell the truth but Mr Caldwell was about to tease out the lies in their testimony and make it clear to the judge. I am incredibly thankful for him representing me.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
