When my case started, I was in a terrible place. My son was being abused and his father was blocking me from getting him medical care and mental health treatment from my husbands abusive behavior and alcoholism. I had been separated for a long time and filed for divorce once on my own but my husband wouldn’t give me the information I needed to finalize so the case was dismissed. I was hopeless and lost. I talked to Billie and she immediately knew what to do. Using the medical records we got an order of Protection. And emergency orders. Now I could get my son treatment and his dad couldn’t touch him or see him. We used sober link and supervised visits. We worked with a counselor. I got more child support than ever. This was the scariest time in my life and modern law handled it. It wasn’t fast but it was safe and they made it easy. The best part was in trial. You should have seen my ex’s face when Billie was cross examining him. She made him look so bad and exposed him for the jerk he is. I have never felt so protected or understood. I am at the beginning of a long dreadful and what I felt like was a very complicated case to me. My attorney in just a couple visits and communication has changed my perspective on how I look at this challenging important matter. He let me know that there is an end in sight and my case is very typical and they deal with Similar cases everyday. I realized the reality and simplicity of my situation BECAUSE they took on our family court case. I can't literally wait for this to be put behind us but as my other attorney, Billie T. said that she believed that there is a great chance to have a good resolution. And I have been planning to have her and her law firm and team represent me for five years now. My first consult was after trial. Billie was simply honest with her answer and straight up gave me nothing but legal advice and FACTS. I consulted with several firms and attorneys... none were fit or right for my case because they made my case out to be as if it were impossible. (Which it is and was a high conflict case unfortunately) 2020 AND Finally a light at the end of the tunnel thanks to the Modern Law team I have worked with thus far. Billie Tarascio and Darin Colburn are the attorneys I have had the pleasure of working with. Billie handled my out of state parenting plan like a true professional and was able to get me more weeks than is typical, and I can’t thank her enough for that. Darin handled my equal parenting plan upon my return to Arizona and was calm, cool and collected and able to help me stay that way as well. We were being sued. Tim, Roger and Kristina were a great team. Tim wrote a letter to the other Attorney for the plaintiff and made it clear it would hurt their case to sue us. My Attourney’s were aggressive and the cost was very reasonable. The team took care of this in 4 weeks. I will provide this law group to anyone needing a good firm! I contacted Sylvina and eventually hired her to help me finalize matters still lingering from my court ordered Settlement Conference. These unresolved matters come after many years of litigation and many judge changes. She worked really hard to bring herself up to speed on this case and help me to bring these matters to the new Commissioners (previous Judge retired) attention. The Commissioner re-ordered the Trustee to do the same things the previous Judge had ordered. He complied with some but, not all of those orders. Again, and again throughout the settlement process this Trustee has failed to do his duty. We were forced to take the Trustee to court in order to get him to fully comply. Sylvina did her best to enlighten the court as to the issues that the Trustee had ignored...sadly, our court system is broken, and this Trustee breached his duties and the terms of the stated wills again. I am still trying to understand how a person can meet with their attorney and have Will(s) drawn up - which clearly stated his wishes and, when those wishes are not complied with by the Trustee, our court system doesn't hold them accountable. Sylvina did her job the best she could, and I enjoyed working with her.

When looking for a lawyer I did my research I looked through pages of reviews for every lawyer I considered. I read Donna’s reviews after my consult with her and regardless of any doubt they may have cast I knew she was the one for the job. I could tell that some were true and others were not accurate at all based on my own experience. Donna is a hard woman of great character and was very ethical in handling my case. She knows her information and she listens (which can be costly if you talk a lot)
Let me be upfront. Legal custody dealings are not something anyone ever wants to have to go through. Figuring out how to navigate the situation can not only be stressful but highly emotional and not just for you children are also affected by custody battles. I unfortunately had to go through this and it was an incredibly high conflict type custody dealing that I would not wish anyone to ever have to experience. I was referred to Hougen family law through a domestic violence advocate group when their connected lawyer analyzed my situation and determined he was unequipped to handle the brevity of my case. He sent my information to Donna and let me tell you she was everything that I had told the lawyer I was looking for. I had specified I preferred a female and one who would be brutal. Donna called me I believe later that same day and she took her time going over the aspects of my case with me and letting me know what I was headed into and kind of an idea of how to begin to navigate what I had gotten started. Coming from my situation I did not have a lot of money to hire Donna and her team right away but I was convinced she was the one I needed to have represent me. I had consultations with quite a few law firms and each one informed me that I was looking at an uphill battle and the result was not a guarantee which is understood when the custody of your children rests in the wisdom of the Judge you go before. The standard quote was well into the 5 figures from each law firm. Donna Hougen presented herself much more clearly and in depth than any lawyer that I consulted with. Her price range was no lower but she worked with me and honored my discount with legal shield as I couldn’t use there lawyer because of a conflict of interest. Right from the get go Donna Hougen was brutal and not because she was on my side but because she heard and went through the details of my case of which I was tied emotionally to and she helped to set aside the emotion which was by no means easy and many times downright painful and frustrating to be pushed to do. It was absolutely needed though because even through the pain of it Donna Hougen knee that the most important part to me and over all was the best interest of my children.
Many times I had blinders on because I had experienced the situations and I could not fathom how someone could not just hear that and give me absolutely everything. Which when it comes to children it is unrealistic. Children who are caught in the middle of a custody battle have two parents who are important to them in unique ways and even if the other party is not a good person in your eyes it doesn’t diminish the role they play in your children’s lives. I knew this but again was clouded by my emotion and my rightness in the situation. Donna Hougen would listen to my concerns and be straightforward with me which felt brutal to me but after I had processed I would be able to understand more where she was getting me to. Not that I liked it in the least but she was impartial and honest. When I hired Donna I did it on a unique basis. At first I could only afford the retainer and structured my billable hours around getting advice and doing what I could to complete the pieces I could to maximize Donna’s help. For trial prep Donna took her time & made sure I was clear in the process and time constraints. Also I understood the importance of sticking to facts with evidence. My outcome was favorable but would have hired Donna either way!

Donna Hougen is an excellent attorney who prevailed in my two trials obtaining me a substantial award of spousal maintenance (8 years) and child support (5 years). Her knowledge of the law and trial experience was the only reason I could start my life over with the awards the judge gave me. Donna can be tough yet compassionate and I appreciated that combination because it helped me stay focused on my case and as a witness in my own trial. Donna also won an award of my attorney's fees to be paid by my ex-husband. I would highly recommend Donna.

They didn’t even fight for me against the other driver’s attorneys. All they wanted to do was settle for any amount. Which was very low. and then they took more than half the money that we did get in a settlement. Which they took more than half. they had told me they would only take 33% . Stay away. Warning.

Mr. Everts represented me in a very difficult divorce about 10 years ago. It involved AZ law, International law, and another State's law for a prenup. I hired Mr everts to be my attorney for a divorce modification child support, & custody. long story short he didn't catch something and something they told me all along they would do could no longer be done because I had not done my paperwork incorrectly. He was hired as my attorney and even had me correct the child support worrsheet but blamed me for his error in not catching it. I did file a complaint with the AZ STATE Bar and because this was a mistake I was advised to look for a legalmalpractice lawyer because he cost my son close to $35,000 in back child support that we could not get because he made a mistake not me. I will be building a webpage to post my story, in the end at my child support pre hearing with my x attorney in the room, and the end my x first words out of his mouth where him thanking my attorney. Justice was not served and this momma is on fire with what he put us though. My son is special needs and he did not advocate for me for him like he was hired to do so. DO not hire them!

Don’t even bother with this place, they’ve been giving my dad the run around for over a year and it’s sick, he tore his ACL at a restaurant and it’s excuses after excuses. This time they have a problem getting in contact with their insurance? When they’re a big law firm? It’s a joke honestly, they wouldn’t call us for months for any updates. We would call constantly just to see what’s going on, definitely don’t recommend. I wouldn’t even give them any stars

To the harmed reviewers before us, please report this attorney to the AZ Bar. Sam Pittman happily and aggressively took our money in December 2023 for an appeal, did minimal work (which he advised and took a legally improper position), communicated poorly (was scarce then non finally just stopped responding), made false promises and missed legal deadlines, leaving my daughter's critical legal matters unadressed, which on top of the large advance fee he took and did not earn, caused severe financial and legal harm. To date we still have not been refunded. Please avoid this attorney at all costs. Like other reviewers stated, he has not responded to the AZ Bar to address his misconduct, theft, and negligence that we reported months ago.
