I don't usually like to give bad reviews but of late I've decided to as to warn people so they don't go what I had to, I have a mental disorder that causes high amounts of anxiety... but I went to Pat with my sister who acts as a personal representative as I was going through a divorce -- and so we asked her if she could just help us write up a settlement for the divorce and offer to my husband as due to my mental issues and depression of the divorce we really wanted to avoid any battles of court hearings. My initial opinion was that Pat seems to be a beautiful caring person as she listened intently and then asked me how much I wanted, which was very important to me, I really wanted to work with someone I could trust. But a week or so later she asked for a meeting with my husband and his attorney and for an hour asked questions that could have been answered within moments on a questionnaire. I thought there must be a reason but after the meeting she told me she felt based on certain aspects I could get more than I wanted, which that was not at all what I wanted to do yet never would answer what she think I could get yet sent constant emails which most made no sense and clearly were only to create a bigger bill. I constantly asked her to include my sister but she never did and I finally became so tense I ended up creating the settlement myself and had to be the one to sit with my husband to negotiate which between him and I, I agreed to pay Pat's fees if they went over a certain amount as I figured she wouldn't be charging too much... Then in the end she planned on hiding her fees from me leaving them completely off the settlement I was to sign, the actual official settlement. But I pressed her and she finally told me which I was pretty upset. The only good thing she did was make it where I didn't have to be present for the court hearing but in retrospect she probably figured then I wouldn't see the fees at all till it was too late to react to them. When I last seen her to sign the paper work I watched her pale as I told her of my agreement with my husband and that I was the one who'd now have to pay her for most of that out of my pocket which after finding out what she was going to charge to her I would never hire again. So unfortunately that's my experience with Pat and for me it hurts as I really wanted to trust her but based on my experience with her I would never hire her for anything again. As for my husband's lawyer I'd hire her in a heart beat. She protected him as best she could and from what he told me didn't overcharge for her services at all.

Pat did an excellent job with my difficult and unique situation. She was able to get me through an extremely difficult time with ease. Additionally, she was able to calm me down by thoroughly explaining my options and not making me feel as though I should just 'give in'. I would recommend Pat to my friends and family, should the need arise and would retain her again, should I need to.

Pat has been my go-to attorney for years following my original divorce.( I wish she had represented me then too, and perhaps, I wouldn't have needed any further trips to court). I retained her originally based on a recommendation from someone else who'd used her. Boy, were they right! My experience has been that she is supportive and knowledgeable. She listens. She also allows you to vent, explain, cry, get angry, or whatever it is that you need, while providing the solid legal expertise that is necessary to 'win' your case( Family Law has no real winners- but she gets as close to a win as possible). Pat allowed me to make my own decisions about the case but also knew when I needed to be pulled back into reality. I would recommend her to anyone who has a family law situation. I am just saying, if my case didn't make her retire--- she is battle tested-- and can handle anything and anyone! She knows the law and the legal system so she will use it to her best ability to get the outcome that is right for you. One of the best there is...

Linda Ivanovic was recommended to me by a friend of mine who divorced few years back and said Linda saved his life. Linda Ivanovic and her team of divorce attorneys treated me like family at the time where my actual family was falling apart. It meant the world to have a knowledgeable, highly experienced and compassionate divorce lawyer by my side while I couldn't think straight, worried about my kids' future and what will happen to our family. Her legal approach helped me get my divorce finalized much faster than expected without additional drama and stress which was helpful as my kids had to start school in the middle of my divorce proceedings. I couldn't have done it without Linda's help and will forever be thankful. I don't wish divorce on anyone but if you must divorce and live in Milwaukee or nearby counties and have children, assets that need to be split up or emotionally complex family situation, Linda truly is the best in Wisconsin and will help you succeed.

As stay at home Dad to my children for years asked Amy to file immediately, but Amy delayed, became a respondent, Amy ensured she met with opposing counsel (behind closed doors) and I lost access to joint marital accounts, a working vehicle, health and dental insurance, while Amy charged an unjustifiable fees for her services with egregious errors. After re-entering the workforce and making monthly payments (as agreed), Amy placed a judgment on my home (higher amount than owed) as a favor for an endorsement of a prominent Judge’s political campaign. I called her, pointed out her gross incompetence and malpractice and settled the matter - If you’re going through a high conflict divorce, seek someone organized and ethical. Amy refused to address issues in a timely manner, and will take you for a “ride”. 15 months later, Amy reached out to my place of employment and requested services, which I would not service due to ethics/ conflict of interest.

Amy is an extraordinary attorney. My divorce was complex with both inheritance issues and an uncooperative former spouse who kept changing attorneys. Amy was steady when the boat got rocky. There were some tough legal challenges by the other side, but Amy was tougher and she was innovative. When it looked like there might not be any solution on the horizon, her experience and wisdom shone. Amy is a natural negotiator and will try to resolve matters finding common ground. But, when it is obvious that negotiation is not appropriate, she will fight hard. She is compassionate and it is clear that she works very hard for justice for her clients. I cannot recommend Amy enough.

From my initial consultation with Attorney Zaeske I knew he meant business! He was straight forward with his approach and gave an honest assessment of the possible outcome. The case was a bit challenging with very little time to prepare. I was confident with Attorney Zaeske's approach in the consultation and it was executed extremely well in the courtroom. Attorney Zaeske's quick wit and knowledge of the law is invaluable. Remaining stoic as Attorney Zaeske embarrased the unprepared petitioner was the only challenge. I highly reccomend Eric Zaeske!

Really impressed with Attorney Zaeske. First worked with Eric 2 years ago on a divorce maintenance case. At the consultation Eric spent the time with me helping me understand my options and ultimately advised I wait an additional 2 years to peruse reducing my maintenance obligation. Eric knew that the timing was not right to move forward 2 years ago. Fast forward two years. I contacted Eric and the timing was now right. Eric represented me in this case and I couldn’t have been happier with him and the end result. With Eric’s many years of experience he was able to site case law that was beneficial to me receiving a fair outcome. I was most impressed with Eric’s closing argument at the hearing. It seemed like he had prepared 2 weeks on the preparation when in fact he used many details from that day’s testimony. After seeing Eric in action, I was actually a little embarrassed to see my spouse’s attorney fumbling around trying to go up against Attorney Zaeske’s cunning examination and closing argument. I recommend Eric Zaeske!

As a guardian ad litem he does a poor job of advocating for the children within the family system and not assigning his own set of morals and values to the case. He did an excellent job of perpetuating my abuse within the legal system. It was obvious he is not trained in trauma informed practice, nor child development. Once Atty Alioto was involved in my divorce case a good old boys' club of misogynists formed to vilify me for my sexual identity. It is my firm belief that atty Alioto should not be acting as a guardian ad litem.

I've known Attorney Connolly for many years. When my husband asked for a divorce, she was the attorney I turned to. She not only made sure she was the proper attorney for the job, but she also encouraged me to, without pressure, make sure I felt the same way before hiring her. During the proceedings, Gwen paid very close attention to detail. She also made sure I was understanding everything as well. During such an emotional time, she always helped provide an atmosphere where I felt safe, well represented, and better able to make sound decisions. I enjoyed working with her. She is very knowledgeable, offered great advice and made me feel as though she was always in my corner. Gwen also has many good ties to this community -- I could tell everyone we worked with during the divorce respected her as well.

Concern #1: Do these guys know what they are doing? I was impressed with their structured approach. This made me feel comfortable that nothing would be "missed." Their free video library helped me understand trusts / wills. The videos also showed their knowledge and professionalism. Concern #2: What is their patience for answering questions? Trusts / Wills are new to me and it is easy for my mind to glaze over. This was not their first "rodeo." They answered / anticipated my questions until I felt I had enough understanding. Concern #3: What happens if I have a life changing event or there are issues after I die? They set up a process to deal with these issues. Why did I want to get a trust? I was the personal representative for two estates. Probate is a tedious, expensive and time consuming process. The money I spent to establish my trusts is significantly less than probate costs. In a short period of time I was able to make sure my estate could be settled quickly and easily.

Erik helped me through a divorce. After not living with my former spouse for over 6 years I had hoped it would be fairly easy to resolve. Unfortunately, Erik took most of the brunt of my former spouse's antics and handled himself professionally in and out of the court room. We did not have an "estate" to really divide but what we had my former spouse (at all costs) wanted. Although there were many roads to consider(Erik thank you) I chose me and my sanity. Dramatics ,from my former spouse, continued into the court and I'll never forget Erik reaching for my hand. I relaxed and enjoyed the bravado of one last performance of my former spouse. I made it through with help from Erik and Tania(his right hand).

While I strongly dislike writing poor reviews, I feel an ethical obligation to warn the public about this law firm. Simply put, John Machulak has no communciation skills. The reason I am giving him 3 stars is ONLY because of his administrative assistant. She is his saving grace. She has fantastic communication skills and an amazing work ethic. However, there is only so much she can do. There was no strategy meeting, no set goals/deadlines, emails/phone calls were constantly ignored and I was never coached for arbitration. The day before arbitration (while I was trying to board an airplane to attend the arbitration) attorney Machulak expected me to be able to review and go through evidence for the following day. How am I supposed to do this 33,000 feet up in the air? Everything with him is extremely last minute and then he expects you to drop whatever you are doing and respond to him immediately after ignoring you for days. He clearly demonstrated a lack of respect for my time repeatedly. Billing is extremely confusing. Invoices are very difficult to read, not itemized by hour and not provided in a timely manner. I asked for a current balance the morning of arbitration and he was unable to provide me with one. I asked for paid receipts for bookkeeping and still have not received any. I finally received a huge invoice that I was unprepared for (because it was never communicated with me what he was working on) weeks after arbitration was over. This past 1 1/2 years have been the most stressful of my entire life and working with attorney Machulak made it twice as stressful as it needed to be. It was a favorable outcome, however, a lot of last minute stress could have been avoided, many billable hours could have been saved, and the arbitration could have been MUCH shorter had he simply held an hour strategy meeting with me well in advance to go over evidence and properly prepare for the day.

Which was a huge relief because my previous lawyer (Mark Pecora) suggested I take a plea!! Ann went to trial and fought for me like it was her freedom in the line! She shed tears, even almost got held in contempt! I had five police lying in me in court! Five! Four officers & a sergeant (all no longer officers, felons now) coming to court lying. Well she went in there and beat the case!! Very passionate about her work and will fight for her clients.

Karen was recommended to me. My time of getting divorced was end ‘21 to mid ‘22 so all meetings were done on Zoom or by email or phone call. Things seemed rushed at the last minute all the time. Little pushing on her part to get my ex moving with information or answers. The decisions to be made were pretty straightforward as most of our finances were consolidated in our retirement. In the end I did not realize how important it would be to have an outside person oversee the division of finances regardless of how simple it seems. A red flag was one financial advisor was dividing the money for both of us. I got no advice on this from her. There was so much haggling on the financial disclosure for small stuff to the penny. No creativity for ways to really equalize life insurance, differences in monthly retirement income, etc. she said the differences were too small to bring before the court. When you are retired and don’t have a lot of money even $500 a month is a lot. The divorce was finalized and the division of finances was a mess. My ex ended up with more than me. On calling Karen back about this I only received words she supported me and no real help as she said she would do. I was on my own and never did get an actual record of the division of finances. I put hours into this on my own after I discovered the problem. Divorce is basically a financial transaction and her work really fell short.

Shocked by these glowing reviews. Not my experience at all. I was told she was a great advocate for women. I did not find this to be the case. I felt totally alone throughout the entire process. I found her to be lacking in any empathy. Many times throughout the process she did not fight for me and tried to talk me into agreeing to something that clearly was not in my best interests. Thank goodness I was able to fight for myself against her. I truly regret not finding another attorney. I would not recommend her to any woman.

We hired Imhoff & Associates that contracts with Mr Kerner in SE Wisconsin. The retainer we had to pay is 3 times higher than other attorney's we interviewed. We had very little contact as he barely returned emails or phone calls. Under his care the charges against me mounted up as he didn't speak with DA, as our new attorney has. Where other attorney contracts stipulate that $ will be refunded for hours not used, there is a vague clause in his contracts that says they will not refund any $ we paid. If you need action, you should find another attorney.

If you mess up, you are going to be punished- accept that fact. Kerner didn't comfort me or give me that warm, fuzzy feeling- & I understand that lawyers are busy & don't return every call. But when I really needed him to perform, he did,,, and then some. He told me what I needed to do, and he did what he needed to do. Without his expertise, I would have been locked up for a long time. He was able to reach a compromise where both sides were happy. When someone is speaking to a judge on your behalf, you better have a good lawyer. Kerner was very professional & knowledgeable, and his years of experience show when it counts.

This lawyer is lazy and is part of the good old boys club! I hired this lawyer to handle a child custody and divorce case simultaneously. He often lost information that was given to him several times and came to court unprepared. He also mentioned details from other individuals cases which I thought was highly unethical, especially since they were people that I was familiar with. I wasted thousands of dollars on this attorney only to end up terminating him and going with another lawyer to get results. If you are looking for a stand up attorney who cares about his cases, look elsewhere. Don't waste your time!

He treats you with respect and puts forth effort in getting all the necessary information for you to win your case. I would recommend him to anyone who wants a professional and understanding lawyer.

Matthew is a bold strategist that tackles issues head on with the goals of his clients being his utmost priority. I contacted Matthew as soon as I knew I had a hearing (a day prior!) He immediately reached out to me and gave me a consultation. Speaking to Matthew gave me the confidence I needed to hire him to keep my innocence. He immediately took note of my side of the story in full context and told me of what to prepare for in the charging court. Matthew's wit and knowledge was important in getting my case completely dismissed before I was even charged!

Was recommended to this firm. Tom has been available and reasonable throughout. Works towards a settlement if at all possible and informed me of what’s able to be done, and what isn’t.

He knows how to file paperwork, that’s about it. I feel like he represented my ex, more than he represented me. My ex was pro se, so my ex knew how to run up my tab. He always told me I had to be reasonable, but yet my ex was far from reasonable. So I just nodded my head yes on lots of issues as my attorney wanted me to do, to be reasonable. Thru the years we paid a lot of money and didn’t have a lot of return. Waste.

Each time we met or talked I had to remind him of the pertinent issues. He is not present or prepared. Tom made a deal in judge's chambers that was never even presented to me to make the decision on. When I told him he had no business making a deal without my consent, he said he wouldn't go back and address it. This deal was regarding the only issue that mattered to me. Tom lacked initiative. Big bill....zero results.

Bad advice, waste of money. My case was handled by a new lawyer in Peckerman's firm, with him overseeing the case. I got the short end of my divorce, no thanks to Perkerman. Perkerman, of course, made out. He got paid! If I could I wouldn't give him 0 stars.

I went to Mr. Peckerman from foolish advice from a friend, first thing he wanted to know was my net worth, then he asked for a 6k retainer, then he flies to ISREAL and has me deal with his assistant who burned thru the 6k in less then 4 weeks... Went nowhere with this guy. ADVISE -- STAY CLEAR! GREEDY

Hired him before I knew about disciplinary action against him. Now Richard has now facing another disciplinary action. Heed the warning signs! Richard is unprepared and gives in to the other side. He will not fight for you. We too had to hire another attorney to undue the damage he caused in our case!

Very bad experience! Do not trust this woman ! Not your money or your future! She took my money, but didn't do anything for me, just tried to make me to except my husband unfair offer. She said it's the way how she do her job. I guess save your money ...It's better to go to court without attorney then pay for nothing... Lazy?

I am disappointed in this lawyer. He does return phone calls or e-mails in a timely manner, even if he calls you first. He also does not follow through on jail visits, even when he promises inmates he will visit them. He did not inform me of court dates, I found out by looking them up on Wisconsin CCAP. Attorney Bartell tends to procrastinate and delayed calling the DA, which probably affected the course of the case.

I hired this guy for my divorce and he was terrible. He did not show up to court and didn't even bother to let me know. He wouldn't do things I would ask him to do. He never got back to me!!!! He ordered a GAL, when I ordered him not too. The other attorney cancelled the GAL and Mr. Rupich ordered it against my advice. I did not want the kids having to go through this. They had to appear before the GAL. I was a stay at home for 14 years and I got 50 50 placement!!!! I had no job for all those years and I got $275 a month in child support and NO spousal support of any kind. He ruined my life!!! I ended up firing him and had to get a new attorney! I can't even tell you how terrible he was. We almost had a signed agreement with every other weekend visitation until he ordered the GAL twice and didn't bother to show up in court!!

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
