I was in need of an attorney to help me navigate a FSBO real estate transaction, and so I did what I think a lot of people do when finding themselves at a loss, and turned to Google - Typing "real estate attorney near me" resulted in the next step, which is close your eyes and pick one to call. As luck would have it, I chose Katie, and I gave her a call. I got her voicemail, and I ended up leaving a message that could only be described as rambling and confusing. To my surprise, Katie called me back the next day. She asked more than a few questions, as any good attorney will, and we ended up determining the best route to take. She is a very effective and efficient communicator, but what really stood out was her authenticity. If you are in need of an attorney, you could hope for good luck, but I would recommend starting with Katie - You might end up hiring her, or you might not, but at the very least you will have had a nice conversation with a lawyer, and how often can you say that?

He has represented me on 2 separate occasions. The first he plea bargained down from a felony to misdemeanor and got me off probation in one year. I should have went to jail for a year minimum and 5 years probation. The second time he decided to goto a jury trial and we won. He handles himself like a total professional in and out of court and when he is in court he has total command of the room. He makes prosecutors look like students and he is quick on his feet. I have sent numerous people to him over a 10 year period and no one has had a bad outcome. He usually works with another attorney out of his office a Mr Plechki and the two of these guys together are legal wrecking balls in and out of court. Highly highly recommend

Richelle will fight for you to the end. She will not let you make decisions she knows will harm you at the end. She fought my divorce for 3 years and kicked butt. From getting all my attorney fees paid by my ex which was over $300,000. She is fair and knows how the system works. She battled with one of the corrupt attorneys known in Minnesota, Christine Stroemer and she kicked her ass calling her out on all her lies and she made the judge see that too.

I hired Lymari Santana to get me through a less then amicable divorce with young children. She's helped me see the matter-of-fact in my situation which helps ground me in my process. Divorce with young kids is not easy for anyone involved especially my children. She looks out for their best interests no matter what the emotion might be at the moment. She has had the backbone when I don't/ didn't and she's one of the most professional lawyers I have had the pleasure to meet. Lymari is confident, focused and well organized. Her focus is doing the right thing and it shows through her hard work and when you're dealing with a lawyer it is not always so common. I would highly recommend her to anyone going through divorce with child custody issues. Through her experience in family law Lymari has the tools needed to be your voice of reason, support and sanity in a very chaotic time.

I was unsure how to proceed in my immigration case. I contacted Ms. Bryan and after asking me specific questions she recommended a course of action and in 3 months I got the work authorization. I recommend this lawyer she helped me a lot to sort out my case. I had contacted other lawyers who did not ask me the questions Ms. Bryan did. I’m very grateful for what she is doing. Thank you!

Karen was an excellent divorce attorney, and provided great guidance and support throughout the process. This divorce case was extremely long and drawn out, and required a lot of patience on her part as far as dealing with the opposition. My case required an abundance of paperwork, numerous orders and I continued to require her services for several years, dealing with contempt orders, child and medical support obligations, affidavits, and required court appearances. She was very thorough with my case, and always went through every possible scenario with me so that I understood exactly what was happening. I would very strongly recommend Karen Ives; I had a very positive experiece and valued her organization, diligence and attention to detail. I also appreciated her thoughtfulness, kind words and understanding nature. She was very helpful and I continue to use her services to this day.

Other than saying the details were messy and it was an agonizing time of my life. The only clear head that was prvailing was Ms. Schorbahn. I was never in question about what was expected of me. There was always a return call to me by the following day. As I reflect, my understanding of the whole process of Divorce was wrong. The Child Custody portion was difficult to understand and process as well. It is a lot of waiting, during those periods of angst, Michelle was always dedicated to explaining, and quite honestly re-explaing the process in great detail. Decisions made were always my decisions after counsel with Ms. Schorbahn. It is because of this, I feel completely comfortable reccomending Michelle Schorbahn to any person who needs help during this difficult, timely process.

I hired Mr. Boulette back in August 2012 to defend from the "blood sucking" ex, the mother of my two estranged children on my child support obligations. This woman had the audacity to certify mailed me a packet with a stack of children's medical bills asked for a total over $13,000 middle of no where while I paid her $4000/month (on time) in child support. Mr. Boulette was professional, prompt on emails and phone calls, and thorough on my case after an initial complimentary phone consultation. After Mr. Boulette's assessment of all the medical bills, he found ONLY $900 out of those $13K medical bills were legal under the law and judge's orders. A HUGE WIN for me, Mr. Boulette's knowledge, and a BIG F to the mother of my estranged children! Thank you Mike for all your help and attention to my case. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

I had to hire an attorney for a business dispute resolution. Mr. Dobberpuhl was efficient, honest, and hard working. For someone who has been done in by previous attorney's, I found Mr. Dobberpuhl to be very upfront, honest about the case, and trustworthy in my dealings with him about the case. His fees were very reasonable for what I needed to get accomplished. He has since handled some other matters for me, and again, he has done very good by me. I would recommend him to anyone who needs a lawyer. He is very personable, professionable, and reliable.

We hired Liz Pierce for our estate planning as well as for some simple and somewhat complex real estate transactions. She is a strong advocate, knows how to negotiate without creating conflict and works hard to reach the best outcome for her clients. Her honesty and integrity are seen not only through her work but also through her billing. We never once felt that we were "overbilled".

Chris Johnson, with Johnson and Turner Law, is an exceptional lawyer. He handled my case very thoroughly and knew exactly how to proceed. He is highly ethical and was well received by the judge. Although my previous attorney made quite a mess of things, Chris was able to re-gain the respect of the court and explain things very clearly. I am very satisfied with the outcome and would highly recommend this law firm. Those that I have talked to, who know Mr Johnson, speak very highly of him. Sarah Sicheneder also worked on my case. Sarah was also very pleasant, and VERY thorough. She had a way of stating things which sounded so professional and was able to explain my situation to the court far better than I would've ever thought of. She worked hard preparing for the case and is an asset to the Johnson and Turner Team. Their prices were fair and I never once felt they were "running up the bill". There is an air of success throughout their office and it is well justified. I can tell they strive to maintain a great local reputation and hope that I am able to refer others to them. Thanks again! Upon completion of the bar, Ms. Burton has been nothing short of dedicated to her trade. Her skill sets are wide and varied and I can earnestly recommend her in any professional setting, be it complex immigration work, personal injury, mediation, or in my matter (pre-nuptials), Ms. Burton always stands above the rest in terms of honesty, and forthrightness. I felt, at the time, that I was afforded 100% of her focus, realizing obviously that she was pursuing more than one client. There was always time for my case. But while working together, it was as if I were her only client. And that feeling of importance is irreplaceable. I highly recommend.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
