Working with this attorney has been the worst decision made in recent years. The quality of service is abysmal and she has no business operating in the family law arena. Mayra has issues with taking accountability and is incredibly untrustworthy. She and her partner have scammed me out of almost $10,000. They present themselves as competent attorneys but they have done nothing but cause issues in the case they were hired for, resulting in an incredible amount of unnecessary stress and anxiety.

Erika and Mayra have been helping with my custody case. My ex repeatedly violates the custody order, but the folks at Flesner Wentzel are quick to answer emails and offer solutions. My previous attorney was great in the courtroom, but he often took weeks to respond to calls and messages. I was looking for an attorney who responds faster than that, and I found that in this firm. My messages are often answered the same day, and I don't think I've ever waited more than a few days for an answer, even when it was a non-urgent question. I completely botched my financial forms when we got started, but Mayra called and patiently helped fix my paperwork. I am under a lot of stress from this high-conflict custody battle, so it's nice to deal with kind people who understand how the legal system works. I also love that they have an online case management system where you can send emails, upload documents, etc. It's nice to be able to access my pleadings whenever I want, and it helps me feel like I'm in the loop. I have worked with other attorneys who would just file things on my behalf and not even tell me, but that doesn't happen here.

I was represented by Daniel in a child custody case which involved my ex wife taking our 3 children to washington state..He not only was able to get my children brought back to Missouri but was able to get me awarded custody as well..He was down to earth and handled my case with complete professionalism..He was responsive and very attentive to my desires and I would recommend him whole heartedly to anyone needing a great attorney..I personally think that hes not only the best in the county but also Missouri as a whole..He also represented me in my divorce 2 years prior to that and I received a satisfactory outcome...He is one of the great ones, and treats his clients with respect and will let you know what to expect and answer any questions you have with complete honesty..and not only that but he doesnt overcharge for a case..his prices are very reasonable

Awful and I do mean awful lawyer he doesn’t even need to be in law he is a lying narcissist, his licenses needs to be pulled and he needs to go. He is so rude and very unprofessional. I would not recommend him to anyone. I just went in for a consult and realized real quick he was not the lawyer for me. And his reputation around town is awful I should have looked into that first before going to meet with him.

I hired Paul to represent me and in the first meeting told him I needed two motions filed. He had three months and did not file them so my court date was continued another 3 months. The day before court he submitted the motions so the prosecution said they havent had time to review and I spent an additional 3 months in jail. He was also paid to represent me in immigration court but never told me he was suspended in immigration court. His incompetence will cost you.

Highly suggest you avoid this lawyer at all costs. She will charge you thousands of dollars and keep your case going despite what you tell her to do. She spent over 3 years on my case and got me absolutely nothing in the end, specifically she got me exactly what I didn't want. Majority of the time she is unresponsive to emails, she lies to your face then goes behind your back and signs orders you didn't discuss with her or even agree to... she's a fraud and stuck up. I would like to give no stars. Highly disassociated in her ability to assist with my case. Do not hire her.

This lady held a meeting at my church this Saturday, she was very, very disrespectful, telling us the members to shut up, said she was going to sue the church, if we didn’t pay her. First of all the church never hired her, was not voted on to hire her. The pastor took upon hisself to hire her, which he should be responsible for her payment. I understand lawyers are tough, but there is a difference between tough and being downright disrespectful. She also stated that we are not a congregational church, which is not true, since we are not a congregational church per her statement that means the Pastor is null and void, because the congregation voted.. She also brought up The Union in the church business, and the church is not union, what happen to the statement of separation between State and Church. She will not ever be recommended as a lawyer.

I don't believe these one-star reviews for a second. I have had the pleasure of knowing this amazing attorney for a while now and I cannot begin to describe just how hard she works for her clients. She is a phenomenal attorney and will do everything within her power to fight for the rights of her clients. Don't take my word for it, contact her office today and let her speak for herself. Cira and the staff at Duffe Law, LLC are fantastic at what they do. They are very down-to-earth and actually listen to what you have to say. I would HIGHLY recommend using Cira as your attorney whether it be criminal defense, family law, or even just something as simple as a traffic ticket.

If $5,000 can’t knock a 1st degree, Class B Felony Burglary - Home Invasion down to what it should have been, nothing more than petty larceny and trespassing, then I would hate to see what she charges to actually do something/anything. My 19 yr old kid walked into an open garage to grab beer that he could see from the street, that’s it. He didn’t break a lock/door or force entry, he didn’t have a weapon, he didn’t come into contact with the homeowners ever, he didn’t have intent to commit a felony. She didn’t do a gd thing. She was HOURS late to literally every single court date. After she told us that the courts were now doing multiple SIS’s, she didn’t even get him that! She told him after it was all said & done that he could request to have it expunged after 3 years. Smh. He would have done better representing himself. Oh & the fact that she is sleeping with one of her clients, a multiple felon convict, which would be a conflict of interest, she should find a different career path. Like maybe a horticulturist for indoor plants.

The word incompetent doesn't do him justice. He deserves negative stars. He is so careless and lazy, he could end up costing you thousands upon thousands, ON TOP of his regular billed services. He just agrees with opposing counsel without even looking things over (nevermind drawing up paperwork to support his own client). I don't know how he's still allowed to practice. In my opinion, it's malpractice. Do. Not. Hire.

I wouldn't recommend this firm. Initially when choosing this firm, I felt comfortable and that the attorney truly cared. However, with the primary method of communication being electronic, I've felt lost and very confused during my divorce process. I missed information, I've not been able to complete request in a timely manner and for this reason my there has been delays. Unfortunately I have an ex that won't participate and instead of the attorney helping me, I've been blamed and told what can't be done. It really seems like she doesn't care at all. Even with something I misunderstood, I was verbally checked and told how it was my fault. There seems to be no value for the client. Unfortunately, I paid my fees upfront but am definitely regretting it.

During my first consultation with Kelison, I thought she was nice and informative. However, after I hired her to take on my case, she was not easy to get in contact with and I felt as though she was not taking my case serious. After several texts from my ex stating he knew that was getting ready to have a baby and that she was on maternity leave. I felt as though Kelison was way too personal with the opposing counsel. And I did not appreciate that at all. Especially, with all the stress I was already going through with having a newborn baby and having to go through a court case. After seeking new counsel, I sent Kelison an email stating that I would no longer be seeking advice from her and that I had found a new lawyer. I have sent a few emails after parting ways with her and her firm and I have still not received any of my retainer from the Binder Firm. If I could give 0 stars, I would! How do you not refund someone part of their $1500? I understand her services had an hourly fee, however, I only met with her face to face twice and spoke on the phone with her once or twice. The services used did not equal $1500. And I should have received something as a refund! It is now August of 2020 and I parted ways with Kelison in December of 2019. Why has it taken so long for me to receive a refund?? There are better lawyers in the KC area than this firm!!

I trusted him with a big case and he did NOT disappoint, he got it dismissed!! He told me what I should expect both pros and cons and in the end he over delivered on all of it. He is a no-non-sense , straight shooter. Without a doubt he will get the job done. You could not ask for a better legal team. The office staff is prompt and supportive. Disrespectful and rude staff, zero professionalism from Jeffrey “you called me” Taylor. This dude won’t contact you for any reason and when you call him his staff will cuss at you. His wife (idk if she is but she claimed she was the few times we talked) is a vile human being who thinks her position as his wife gives her carte Blanche to be hateful to clients. My mother contacted him a few months ago for an update on a case from last year because we’d heard nothing and he had no idea what she or I were talking about and spoke with less professionalism than a used car salesman. Cussed, spoke plainly and seemed intensely aggravated to have to communicate with her at all. Avoid this guy if you want to be treated with respect or value your well being. His “deal” with the judge was the maximum sentence for her misdemeanour violation, with a clean record, don’t expect him to go the distance for you. I showed up and just plead her case and had a better result. Expect less than what you pay for. I’ve debated if it was worth it to review Because it’s no longer my problem but decided it may be helpful to others. If you’re a law abiding person who makes a stupid decision for the first time no matter how small expect to be treated like a violent criminal by your own lawyer. Your age and circumstances won’t matter, he and his staff spoke like that to my 90 year old mother when she called, and your mother won’t be the exception. He and his staff will make a stressful and confusing time for you infinitely worse.

Navigating a divorce in 2015 and a motion to modify in 2024 has been two of the most stressful times in my life. Charged us about $750 for what he did even though it was not what we hired him to do. Removed himself from our case when we disagreed with what he wrote and refused to refund our remaining retainer of about $1050. If I could leave a 20 star review, I would. While I've not had a great deal of interaction with Jennifer Cole, she has helped out with a few of my friends. They paint her as a good listener, empathetic to their needs, always respectful of their time and very thorough. Jennifer Fields is as top-notch as lawyers come. I have hired more than 20 attorneys over the last 25 years for various personal and business reasons, in three different states. I highly recommend her for any business or personal needs, especially things like estate planning and building layers of protection into your LLC. She is extremely responsive via email, is very sharp and in-tune with the law and her clients. Due to the nature of our business, we use lawyers for quite a few things, and she gets the nod for every bit of it.

When I called, I was immediately offered a consultation appointment despite his full schedule, they made time to see me. Mr Service took the time to get details about my case specifics and explain the process, and what is important to legally focus on in family/civil cases. He was also upfront about possible issues but took time to listen and explain so it pertained to my circumstances; not a general speech I got when trying to make appointments/consult with other lawyers. Mr. Service is very knowledgeable in these areas and I believe he will be good representation for what is important to me and my family in court. Thank you

Documented video of her with a loud speaker threatening the children / families of police officers in front of the Kansas City Police Department Head Quarters. This shameful terrorist behavior should never be put on display by an attorney.

Paid 100 bucks for half hour consultation. Am fighting for child custody and tried to tell him the history of my case. I never did feel comfortable being wore down with the months of not seeing my child. He seemed very arrogant and pretty much called me a liar when I told him my experience with another lawyer. Tried to explain my case but he seemed to act like he done knew everything. Anyway in the first 10 minutes of meeting him I knew it was a waste of my time.

We have had several legal issues that needed to be addressed over the past few months. We had numerous recommendations but had heard great things about Mr. Glaus. We hired him to do several matters for our family and he greatly exceeded our expectations. Thanks so much for the help rendered to our family.

Lynne was so empathic when I had my initial consultation but as soon as I sent her my deposit, I felt very low on her client priority list. She and her team would frequently not respond to questions that I had, either missing questions in emails or not responding to my emails at all. When I expressed my frustration after a member of her staff submitted the wrong document to the court on my behalf, she questioned my emotional stability and defended her staff as the best staff member she has ever had. Documents she sent for my review were filled with errors, disorganized, and in some instances, were harmful to me, according to another lawyer I consulted. I even had to rewrite the settlement agreement (with no legal training) because the document she sent was unusable. Be aware that she charges the same rate for work that her legal assistants complete on the case as she does when she works on the case herself. While I’m not sure how efforts are allocated in the office, I spent much more time corresponding with legal assistants and her secretary, but I paid the same price as if I was working directly with Lynne. Even worse, for 10 months, she had me unknowingly working with her secretary--not a legal assistant—yet charged me at the same rate of $200. This person was responding to my legal questions while my lawyer repeatedly did not answer my emails. Use Lynne if you want an office to submit your paperwork but don’t expect any legal or strategic advice or input. I’m not sure if I was a particularly low priority client or if she treats all her clients this way. If I had known half then what I know now, I would have hired a different lawyer.

Lynne Brand and all of her assistants did an amazing job helping me with my case that involved modifying child support and the parenting plan. Her knowledge and expertise was great, but even more impressive was how she and everyone on her team made me feel like I was the most important client they had. They have the connections and relationships in the Lebanon area to get things taken care of in as stress-free manner as possible - and this was very important since I don't live in Missouri and we had to do the majority of our communications via phone and email. I highly recommend the Brand Law Firm!!

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
