Heather Unger lied, regurgitated lies made under oath and supported a person who threatened to kill children. She has no morals and very little ethics. She's put my children in severe danger because of her lack of morals.

Completely ineffective, not responsive, allowed situation to escalate and get out of hand when a simple answer in the beginning of the process would have negated escalation, saving time and money. Stated things that were not true or not implemented and not followed through on. Misrepresented the truth and was wrong on several accounts but don’t bother to argue with him or contradict him as you are never right even in the presence of evidence. He pretends to have that authority to make you do things or impose rules not based in law or even practicality. You will notice that all the positive reviews are from men as this “Good Ole Boy” with an office strewn with Guns and Ammo magazine is not about equity but from the approach that the father in any given situation is the one in the right. A huge waste of time and money and not about equity or situation resolution.

Take notice of how he responded to clients on this site who disagreed with him or wrote a negative review. This is indicative of my experience. He started out as if he knows a lot, but ends up in a pile of fees with no results and defensiveness. To be specific: 1) Did not respond in a timely manner to questions or sometimes not at all. 2) Submitted a hand-written draft of an official court document with lined out words and margin notes. I specifically stated that I wanted to discuss this document and the numbers before submission. 3) Scheduled and rescheduled hearings without consulting me to as to my availability or to even inform me that it had taken place. 4) Did not provide copies of court documents filed, correspondence to/from opposing counsel, nor copies of any discovery items supplied by the petitioner. 5) Failed to inform me of progress in the case, his strategy, what to expect in the process or any options I had available. 6) Sent an email requesting documents that I had sent a month earlier and billed me for it again. 7) Incompetently suggested we cancel a hearing and offer $1000/mo. in spousal support for life. He did not offer any alternatives or demonstrate a willingness to fight for me since my spouse had a professional degree and professional license with the ability to earn a living equal to mine. My new attorney negotiated a set, non-modifiable amount of spousal support which turned out to less than what Mr. Van Ness recommended I should pay in one year alone! 8) Exorbitant fee. No one expects an attorney to be inexpensive or to get 100% of a desired outcome. However, I do expect the attorney to at least pretend to be on my side and work for my benefit. This attorney did not. 9) He was fired over four months ago and continues to add fees for services. He filed a "Notice of Lien" on my property two weeks after I fired him. Everything Mr. Van Ness was not, my new attorney was. She was professional, courteous, explained everything, informed me every week, sent copies of emails, letters, discovery and well versed in family law. Don't waste your time or your money on Mr. Van Ness for family law issues. Find someone who specializes in the field with 100% of their representation in family law.

My experience with Mr. Van Ness is painful. He was happy to charge me a lot of money, but for wasted and undesired work. He was recommended and when we met seemed to be nice at first, but over time he just did not seem to be the brightest bulb and if for whatever reason he gets butthurt he lashes out - not very professional or conducive to helping resolve legal matters, especially in a high conflict situation. I definitely do not recommend.

I had hired Mr. White to help me with criminal charges I was given for following my job description and following Oregon Administrative Rules as an Assistant Director of a group home. I was distraught and very anxious and confused, as I had not ever been in trouble with the law, not even a speeding ticket. Mr. White calmly and effectively explained EVERYTHING, from the charges, what they meant what max penalty could be, as well as what the entire process could look like from arraignment to going before a jury. He helped relieve so much stress and anxiety throughout the whole ordeal. Mr. White was friendly and professional from our first phone call until the end. He was able to get the charges dropped without having to even go to arraignment. Highly recommend him for your legal needs!

I recommend having nothing to do with Rex J White. I have character limit here so I cant go in to full detail but a quick summery of my experience with this man and the challenges I am going to have if I try to sue him goes like this.. I was the victim of housing discrimination, by both a property management company and a BOLI agent but I was able to prove it because I had recorded all my calls with the property management company and agent. Rex bragged to me about making this company settle out of court many times. (Mind you I am disabled and was basically bed ridden, and he knew I was up against the statute of limitations ) He came to visit me with another trainee lawyer named Dallas. I am guessing he lied to me on the phone because he referred to Dallas as his assistant. He listened to the evidence I had given him. In short the property management company claimed to have denied me housing due to my demeanor. However I was nothing but polite, kind and soft spoken in every encounter I had with them and not just them, I try to be that way with everyone I deal with, especially if I am trying to get favor from them. I mean that's just common sense, who is going to do something nice for you if you are not mindful of their feelings? Rex sees everything and tells me he will send me a contingency agreement and a draft of the settlement demand, mind you I am now wrapped up with him just based on the fact that I trusted him and his mother was the secretary for the firm he was working for close to two months. With almost two weeks left to go he sends me a rejection letter and denies all the above. So I go about it on my own and basically taught myself how to be a lawyer online and as Trump would say I won BIGGLY lol I love karma. But the problem is if I try to sue Rex he may argue that he didn't damage me and that I am clearly a better litigator then he could ever hope to be and that I was better off in my hands than his...

Hired Mr. Wilson to represent me in a misdemeanor case. He had 18 months to prepare for trial. He was unprepared and lost the case to a new assistant district attorney. The kicker is he had the truth on his side. I did not commit any crime. He lost the case because he was completely unprepared and only interested in his fees and not justice. Mr. Wilson has been practicing law for over 20 years but only has two old reviews on this site and very few reviews on other sites. That should be a warning to anyone considering hiring him. Word to the wise, look elsewhere for legal help. Consumer beware!

Oliveros Law was a great advocate for a close friend going through a difficult, complicated domestic case involving custody. Oliveros staff were always supportive and suggested bringing in subject experts to assist. The costs for a medical expert, and a trial preparation expert were reasonable, and their advice was extremely helpful . Oliveros put a team together to support my friend, and it gave her the confidence she needed to pursue her case. The case is settled, but the relationship with Oliveros Law Group is ongoing.

As far as I’m concerned he went above and beyond to help me during one of the hardest parts of my life, and was able to bring about the best results I could imagine for my children and myself. He’s an honorable man, who treats you like a person and not a paycheck. Very compassionate and empathetic for my situation and my case. Highly Recommend!! Working with Steven Chappell has been an exceptional experience. His unwavering support, clear communication, and expert guidance for our family led to a favorable outcome in our challenging legal case. Three things that I can share: Steven's professionalism and dedication were evident in his thorough preparation and timely responses. His reputation and respect in the courtroom significantly contributed to our successful defense. His humble nature belies the profound impact his standing has on the case's outcome. Beyond his legal expertise, Steven's compassionate approach made a stressful time more manageable. He truly had our best interests at heart. I highly recommend Steven Chappell to anyone in need of a knowledgeable and supportive attorney. His expertise and dedication are unmatched, and we are grateful for his outstanding service. Thank you, Steven, for everything!

In my observation, Mark Cottle’s approach as an attorney in high-conflict situations was concerning. I would expect a legal professional to encourage resolution and de-escalate tension. Instead, his tactics appeared to escalate conflict unnecessarily, making an already challenging situation even moredifficult to navigate. While I was not Mr. Cottle’s direct client, my observations are based on his role in a case I was directly involved in. The impact of an attorney’s approach extends beyond their client, particularly in high-conflict family matters where their decisions can significantly influence the process and outcomes for everyone involved. For those navigating complex legal challenges, I would encourage seeking someone who prioritizes constructive outcomes and fair advocacy. Unfortunately, I did not see these qualities reflected in his work. Additionally, it’s worth noting that Mr. Cottle has faced disciplinary actions in Oregon, including: 2013 Suspension: Temporarily losing his license to practice law. 2015 Suspension Stayed with Probation: His license was at risk, but the suspension was held while his conduct was monitored.

We hired Mark Cottle to help us with our child custody case. He reassured us and sounded like he was going to fight for us and get things taken care. We retained him and could not reach him for weeks. Then after weeks of not being able to contact him- his assistant contacted us saying Mark was sick with Covid. We understood but he didn’t push our court hearings back because of that so instead just didn’t show up to our court hearings as our representative for our case. Because of that we lost by failure to show and lost 30,000$. He used my exact email to email the other sides attorney, didn’t change one word so I might as well have been representing myself. He did absolutely nothing for us at all and was so hard to get in contact with. We had to settlement because he wasn’t fighting for us in anyway or giving any legal advice or helping our situation at all. I do not recommend him at all. Theirs way better family law attorneys who actually care and will fight for you like they’re being payed to do.

I hired Mr Garcia to help me deal with some bullies in my trailer park. We scheduled a mtg with the owner and manager, but he criticized me in front of them more that once. When I asked him his opinion on something, he replied he had not been listening (in front of the people I am trying to communicate my wishes to). He added nothing to the meeting, and I was left to list my complaints and negotiate by my self. Two weeks after the mtg he could not recall the details of the mtg when I asked him about it. For all of that he charged me $1500.00 He was more excited to meet the wealthy owner of the park than to see that I got a fair deal.

Many times asked the same questions repeatedly, often seemed disengaged from my case. Sometimes that appeared to be the result of Mindy being preoccupied with the cases of other clients, other times it seemed she just didn’t put in the time and attention necessary. Ignored specific requests, leading to billed hours that were unnecessary. Also at times would unnecessarily heighten the tension through language used and demands that were not made by me. While working my case, she did not affect any negotiations in my favor whatsoever. Could be very crass, which honestly would not be an issue had Mindy brought some value to the case. Overall just not in any way satisfied with my representation by Mindy Wekselblatt.

Defending people must not have proved lucrative enough. What is Not stated on their website is that they actually only defend employers and companies. A firm should not be allowed to misrepresent themselves in this way. Only working For the very entities that they advertise pursuing.

It was a delight working with Mr. Kirk. He kept me updated with the progress in my case and whenever there were updates with the legal document he made sure I had a chance to review them to ensure my personal information was disclosed correctly. He kept me reassured we were making progress in my case and I entrusted him completely that we would arrive at a satisfactory result. I highly recommend Mr. Kirk for his legal service as he has great attention to his clients.

I was really concerned that Nate Holtey forcefully advocated to do something that was harmful to a child (a fully professional review by medical professionals had been done of the care, but Holtey apparently could not care less about the well-being of the young people whose lives he touches). Also, he refused to consult with another attorney, sloppy work indeed.

I started my divorce in 2018 while the divorce was finalized there were many ups and down with my ex. Kristin was ideal with helping my navigate through this as well as keeping our children out of it. Through the years she has dealt with my multiple emails, phone calls, counselors, PC, reunification therapists, the ex, his attorney with SO many people involved in this case you would think she could possibly “drop the ball”. Well she didn’t. She does her best to point out when you yourself may be wrong. (Which makes a good attorney) She tells you to always “take the high road”. Which we all know is difficult when dealing with a divorce. If it weren’t for her guidance, honesty, expertise, years of experience, excellent staff to assist her. My children and I wouldn’t have got the outcome we got. Come court date she had ALL things in order, super organized and went down a checklist of facts. I knew then the other side should be worried that she came prepared to win! I would highly recommend her to anyone. And would use her again if needed.

Kristin was hired in my divorce case with an abusive husband and father. I’m not entirely sure what she did on her part as I’m the one who did all paperwork and gathering of discovery. She was routinely rude and unbelievably unorganized and did not address extremely crucial issues that affected my 3 kids IMO. I could share a whole lot more but I won’t , needless to say I wholeheartedly DO NOT recommend this attorney. Be wary.

I use lawyers for my businesses every year so I am familiar with many of the industry norms. I am 5 years into a challenging co-parenting situation and another issue arose recently. I contacted Kristin Eaton via her firms website and scheduled a meeting after hearing back from her paralegal. Great I thought. The day of the consult, the paralegal email to say, "Can't do a 1/2 hour free consult - you have to pay for 1 hour" - I said, ok. I value my time and understand she wants to be compensated for hers. I drove 40 minutes to her office for the 1 pm appointment. When I arrived, the paralegal came out and said Kristin can't meet me today, she is too busy - I need to schedule out in 2 weeks. Ouch - what a waste of my time.

I HAD DONE A FAIR AMOUNT OF DUE DILLIGENCE PRIOR TO VISITING HIM,, HE WAS MORE CONCERNED WITH MAKING FUN OF ME AND TELLING ME THAT I SHOULD JUST SETTLE MY CASE FOR HALF.. It has been several years since I dealt with Chance but he appears to still be with Goldberg and Jones. Coming in the door Colin Amos promised me the moon, then passed me off to Chance. Most of my funds were spent sitting around chatting it up with Chance. He never developed a legal strategy to move forward with my case, even refusing to even attempt to research the value of narital assets. Valuable time was lost and, consequently, money. I wasn't sure if Fewel's failure to perform his duties,as my attorney were more due to professional incompetence, ineperience or a lack of passion for the job -- perhaps all three? Anyway after re-uping their retainer once too often and expending thousands of my dollars for legal services of questionable value I cut hi m loose and hired another lawyer who as she said "cleaned up the mess" he had made of my divorce. Lesson learned, even if a little late.

Extremely disappointed with how Dan has managed our estate case. It has been nearly two months since opposing counsel has requested to close the estate, but Dan continues to ignore any email from my wife or myself. The estate is not worth what he initially thought it would be, and he is no longer motivated to do the right thing by me or my deceased father. TRUST ME when I say a detailed review of this matter and Dans neglect will be posted to this site and sent to the Oregon Bar Association after the estate is settled.

Dan was initially referred to me 30 years ago and I saw him for a divorce and a couple of other matters along the way...then out of nowhere I was indicted on 10 felony counts arrested and humiliated ...so I called Dan who immediately took my case and went to work. One of Dan's biggest strengths is his personal integrity which hasn't gone unnoticed within the legal community. When he says something to a judge or other attorney then they listen and believe him...and rightly so. Dan took less money in order to hire an investigator that would prove to be the difference between winning and losing. I wasn't guilty which always makes it alittle easier but they had wound the net around me pretty good. Dan is an expert of working within the system to get things done. Ive sent him lots of clients throughout the years because I believe that strongly in this guy ...he saved my life because he is really good at what he does.

I've retained Daniel Lorenz for numerous legal purposes. I have referred several others to Dan as well and he's been very successful on their behalf also. He has successfully litigated every issue I've had. He's successfully won 2 jury trials and efficiently handled several other legal matters on my behalf! I would strongly recommend that you contact Dan if you ever need a a strong and experienced trial attorney! With 40 years of successful trial experience you would be doing yourself a disservice not to at least have a consultation with him! Thanks for everything Dan!

After an emotional decision I offered to my wife am uncontested divorce. After an Internet research for a local attorney to facilitate this I discover Ms. Smith-Koop. Unfortunately my wife took her own action and filed. I kept my appointment with Ms. Smith-Koop. I will attest that I was completely distraught. Not only did she walk me throught all my options she kind and presented me the facts. My position was to be fair and reasonable to my wife. Ms. Smith-Koop provided all the resources necessary to accomplish this goal. Elaine represented me in a difficult paternity case. My case was challenging to say the least and I was fairly doubtful of my chances at winning. Most of the feedback/opinion I received from other attorneys in Elaine's area of expertise (paternity) wasn't too optimistic. Elaine was the only one who truly gave me hope and her feedback/opinion on my case was more knowledgeable of the law than some of the other attorney's feedback whose rates were much higher than Elaine's. Elaine is a skilled professional who is highly knowledgeable and very competent in the area of paternity and family law. Elaine and her legal staff helped me win a very difficult paternity case and both their experience and competence are admirable.  I am very happy with the outcome of my case and the services provided. Given my overall experience with Elaine, I would highly recommend Elaine and her staff to represent you if are looking for an attorney that truly knows and skillfully practices the law!!

Sara allen  I absolutely hit the jackpot with this wonderful, approachable and reliable attorney.  Sara Allen went way beyond my expectations, not only solving my issues but at the same time putting me at peace while spending her own personal time (which I know she must have very little of) to take care of me. Ms. Allen's incredibly knowledgeable and has a confident and reassuring demeanor. I would entrust this attorney (person) with my most personal, life matters.  I have never had an experience as streamlined and efficient as it has been with Ms. Allen. It's not always a pleasant experience when one feels the need for an attorney, but somehow she always makes me feel much better about everything. The drop done only allows one area of law to choose from, but she's handled multiple areas for me. It's obvious she's just a wonderful human being and I appreciate all she's done for me. After a contract agreement in which I was owed a substantial amount of money could not be resolved, and getting no results from another lawyer, I went to Sara Allen. She was very thorough, did not waste time, and clearly stated with the offending party's representation the terms of settlement. When they other side failed to responded and tried to employ stall tactics, Ms. Allen was prepared to go to Court to protect my rights. Recognizing Ms. Allen's extensive court room experience and winning record, at the recommendation of their well known law firm the offending party settled for the full amount. I can highly recommend Ms. Allen as a lawyer and will not hesitate to contact her again, should the need arise.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
