I hired Mrs. Johnson to represent me with my child custody case. She did nothing but destroy my case. She was clearly intimidated by the opposing lawyer. She did not submit facts and promised me the world when in fact all I received was a big fat bill for $25,000 after paying her $12,000 already. Then she will quit on you when she realizes she can’t do her job.

I went in for a consultation from Mes. Johnson and she told me she would not be able to represent me, due to scheduling, but went ahead and started helping me as much as she could on my case. She gave me some amazing advise and referred me to another lawyer. If you want someone who will work hard for you and be honest this is your lawyer.

This is Dan Taylor. I have no idea who wrote this review since they hide behind anonymity, and I can't defend myself against such. All I can say is check out my resume' online at Taylor Bean and Hamer, and feel free to ask about me to any lawyer that handles divorces, any Judge who hears divorces, and/or any of my clients.

Claims he’s all-knowledgeable—as he should be for such an extremely high hourly rate—but he takes absolutely no interest in your case as he runs up ridiculous monthly bills. He’s never prepared for Court, and looks ridiculous in front of the judge, therefore so do you. Prepare to spend a lot of money for terrible service, and to lose in the end, including precious time with your kids when you should have never lost that. Oh, and he’ll not only get you stuck paying his bogus, overcharged bills but get you stuck paying for your ex’s bills too. He’s extremely unprofessional and unprepared, but you won’t know this until it’s far too late. Run while you can—wish someone had warned me about Dan Taylor.

Doesn't finish what she says, client has to track her down to work, over charges what she quotes. Paid final payment to find she wanted more money . Money motivated. Will not be a returning client. Shows little professional conduct to birth family & price gouges adoptive family.

I went to Mr. Nimmo for needed help for divorce. My wife had left me high and dry after 10 years, and hired a pitbull, man-hating lawyer for herselg.fShe left me without telling me, took thousands of dollars, and half the assets in the home. I was going through depression, and have no family in TN. I needed a lawyer who was fierce, intense, thorough, and reassuring. Mr. Nimmo was none of these. He rarely if ever answered my calls, E-Mails, or texts, and it took almost a year for a very simple divorce to take place. I know it was simple because even my ex-wife wanted it simple. He was not willing to do anything I asked, and paid him to do. My ex-wife violated at least 3 court orders. Not once did he file for a hearing on this. I would not recommend this attorney for anything. One time, he even accysed me of being a day late to my appointment when he clearly knew it was on Thursday (not Wednesday, as that is my church night, and I would never schedule an appointment on Wednesday). When I got to his house, he said, "You're a day late." Are you kidding me!? He also was very unsympathetic of my situation, and even was going to have the final decree written to favor my ex-wife!! Ugh!! Do not use this attorney.

I had a court appointed laywer. He failed to file the writ of certiorari which stopped the appeal. The Tennessee Court of Appeals contacted the lawyer, they found problems in my transctript. It was only 43 years later that I found this out.The state had no proof,no weapon,no money, and no witness's.The Tennessee Appeals set aside my verdict and reinstated it to give the lawyer more time to file the writ of certiorari. If he had done so my sentence would probably have been over turned and I would have been freed. He still never filed and the court agreed that I had ineffective assistance of counsel. I am only asking to have this expunged from my record.I served the time all those years ago. You are that Lawyer. The Tennessee board of parole will not help unless you will send me a letter stating why you did not file the writ of cert. I spent four and a half years in prison for a crime I did not do. And 48 years later I am still being punished. I just want my record cleared. The Tennessee court of appeals set aside my conviction so you would have more time to file. They said in their judgement that they contacted you, But you still never filed. Please you can help and make a big different in my life Thank you in advance for your time and trouble. BILLY

CANNOT recommend Beth Brooks for attorney. Did not review facts of case and, as it appeared, apathy would be this attorney's bailiwick, as she took her check, grinned and then socialized with the plaintiff. Add lack of integrity to her conduct. Hired another lawyer that actually exemplified ethics, integrity and attention to the facts, and all was well afterward. Repeat, cannot recommend Beth Brooks for attorney. Reviews are not in her favor.

Judge olita failed to be fair and impartial. She held the one side accountable for a violation of an order. How ever very shortly after the other party had been in contempt many times and she through it all out with out taking the evidence in to account. I believe this judge is done being on the bench and needs and thorough examination on values in the judiciary system.

In 20220 my divorce was finalized. Because of Katherine Olita my ex-wife was granted full custody. I had proof of my ex's then-husband hospitalizing my children multiple times, evidence of my ex drinking and using drugs in front of my children, and my ex-wife leaving the infant children home alone to go sleep with other men. She knew my ex-wife because at the time she was employed at Montgomery County Sheriffs' office. Because of this, she would not allow me to speak, only my ex-wife. My ex-wife alleged, with absolutely no evidence, that I killed a dog, and Olita wrote "The court finds this detrimental to the children" again with absolutely no evidence. Because Olita granted my ex-wife full custody, my children had to witness her trying to kill her husband with their baseball bat. The witnessed their mom go to jail. They have also been moved around four times with their mom and are now currently moving again. Katherine Olita acts as if she cares so much about family law, and adoptions but she has absolutely no problem ripping families apart and permanently causing trauma to small children, just to benefit a friend. The best part of all this is that my ex-wife tried to get an order of protection against me to prevent me from seeing my daughter prior to deployment. Judge Olita would have been the judge but as soon as she saw all the charges my ex-wife had (assault, and custodial interference) she recused herself because she realized she made a bad choice and did not want her name on it.

He genuinely seemed to care and was confident in his knowledge of the whole divorce process. He always gave me good and fair advice and worked to resolve my issues with compassion. I felt well represented and even though it was a very horrible phase in my life, I felt like I was in good hands and that he, Abby, and Thomas were in my corner and truly have empathy for their clients. Honestly there were times when I didn’t get much communication, but it’s the sad thing about abuse…..there’s ALOT of it unfortunately and I know he was covered up. Initially there was a person on my case that was professional and advocated for me very very well. I felt very protected because they were very competent... they were Taking care of serious matters from the opposing side for me in my divorce wich was riddled with violence, threats, and harassment. Suddenly that person disappeared from the office with no explanation then I was Unfortunately made to deal with Mr. Purple who can not hear well at all anymore and has gotten up in age, as a result he has become extremely incompetent and belligerent! When I would respectfully ask for explanations or help I was met with him being rude and condescending. I was no longer protected at all! He was sometimes plain old DISRESPECTFUL which, was so disappointing because he had initially seemed very sweet. But I was wrong... he would be rude when he couldn't understand you because of HIS hearing loss and, it was very disheartening. He did not advocate for myself or my children properly in ANY way!! There were clearly unsafe situations and not once were we advocated for! There was no attempt to protect my children and it was disgusting because he gotten paid to protect us. Dealing with him was one of the most horrible experiences of my life..and it was an Extremely TRAUMATIC experience. He truly may have been amazing in his prime but those days are very far gone! .I have to be honest. I would not recommend working with Jim Purple!!! Run While you Still Can because We were mistreated and the only person that knows anything about what they're doing is the paralegal TOD..... He had every excuse under the sun as to why he couldn't proceed ...he was sick, his mom was sick, death in the family, covid, his wife was sick and on & on. He never followed through with anything, would not return calls, he is rude, he will talk down to you, he is just not a nice person to work with. hindsight is 2020, I should have read his reviews instead of listening to "His Friend" I seriously handed him $4100 and walked away with absolutely nothing. I see the: Stick to the facts. Reviews that contain unsupported accusations will not be approved. Hmm I wonder why my other detailed review was taken down? Everything that I stated in my prior review was matter of fact. Nevertheless, if you have no problems with your attorney not knowing what's going on in your case to the point of placing the WRONG names on your petitions, if you don't mind your attorney making deals with the opposing party against your will, or just not showing up for court at ALL then this attorney is for you. She quotes you an initial retainer just to get you in the door then lets you know before stepping into court that another retainer is due or she'll walk out, etc..... it's just one hurdle after another. If the "justice" system isn't bad enough to navigate through, it's even worse when your attorney is clueless and selfish.

I needed help with a guardian/custody case. After asking around, we were directed to Mr. Deslauriers. Mr. Deslauriers handled my matter quickly and skillfully. While it was occasionally hard to reach Mr. Deslauriers (who wants a lawyer that's scared to go to court?), he always returned my call or sent me a letter in response. I was not happy at all with the service I received from Frank Deslauriers. He hired him because of his reputation for helping women. My ex had a very good attorney and wanted one as well. The day we met he seemed very gung ho for my case and said he would be diligent. Well after I forked over my money the communication stopped for months. I find him very unemotional and he appeared bored at what I had to say. Don't get me wrong I am sure attorneys hear the same things over and over again, but I was not pleased. It was virtually impossible to get a return call and when I did speak to him he was always quick to tell me what a moral person he is and how diligent he is. I worry about people who have to tell you all the time how great they are. The case dragged forever and I did ok in the end, but what bugged me the most was he told several lies in court. I hate to say that but much of what was said on our side was not true. I believe a person should tell the truth in court and our side did not on some things. I was tempted to stand up and tell the judge some of the stuff he said in court was untrue. What happened was it made a tough situation with my ex even worse because I knew we were lying. Never again.

I don't know if I ever met an attorney like Mr.Deslariers. He has one thing going for him, he does remember the particulars of a case very well. However, the problem is there is never any logic in his arguments. As I sat watching him argue my case, even I had trouble figuring out where he was going with certain things. Needless to say, we did poorly. A few years later, a friend of mine ended up in a case where he was the opposing attorney against her. The lies and dirty pool played by Mr.Deslauriers were shocking. I never have been more turned off then by what I witnessed that day concerning law.

I used Ms. Evans for my divorce, because one of my friends used her (for an uncontested divorce) and said it was quick and easy. My divorce was contested, and I was prepared to be in it for the long haul. However, i wasn't prepared for the astronomical fees charged by Ms. Evans, and how she ate up nearly $10k in a year and got ZERO results. By the time my divorce went to trial, I could no longer afford her services. After I dropped her, she somehow worked the books to reflect that I owed $2000 more dollars, and she didn't do anything. There was no mediation, and all the money was eaten up by her paralegals constantly calling me and filling out arbitrary paperwork for me, OVER AND OVER. None of it was necessary or mattered in the divorce. None of it was requested by the judge. Once I dropped her as my attorney, she went back and canceled all my court dates, and when I complained, she had them reset, and then CHARGED ME AGAIN. Do not go here unless you're prepared to pay. She is vicious, and will fight, but she will also fight you for your arm, leg, and first born child to pay her fees, and she'll make sure to double charge and pad the bill.

This attorney was recommended by a friend, she was the "ROARING LIONESS" in court. She went WAY above and beyond the call of duty to make my situation turn out in my favor. Her drive is unmatched, she was a STAND out in a room of more than 7 (court appointed) attorneys in the room. She was the ONLY one that wld stand up to DCS. They rest of them wanted to follow "normal" procedures for DCS. Contact me if you have ANY questions..

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
