David was quickly to respond, and honest in his assessment. I appreciated his respectful candor and while my case was not a good fit, I definitely hope to find a similar professional and pleasant experience. David took the time to review my story and give me a legal perspective. Awesome service, all for free!

our mid-sized agency has had the unfortunate experience of receiving early terminations after helping new manufacturers establish a significant base of distribution. Thru MANA we learned of Scott's firm and had the good fortune to work together on several cases, only one of which required actually filing a lawsuit, the others being settled much to our satisfaction and affordably. Highly recommend.

Scott Sanders of Sanders & Montalto contacted my law firm in approximately 2007 because he was suing a manufacturer that failed to pay substantial commissions to a sales rep from my state of Pennsylvania. Since the lawsuit was to be filed in Pennsylvania, we acted as local counsel and together with his firm obtained a settlement for our client. Since that time, I have also acted as co-counsel with Mr. Sanders on behalf of other sales reps on multiple occasions in both Pennsylvania and New Jersey. All such cases were successfully resolved. Scott's knowledge of, and insight into, this area of law is invaluable for any sales rep. Scott is tenacious and creative. It has been my honor to serve with him in the efforts to obtain justice for our clients.

I have been a one-man sales rep operation over a long career. I wish that I had known Scott Sanders and his team earlier in my career. Since 2020 they have assisted me in an assortment of matters including when I was not paid commissions owed, and when I was compensated to help a U.S. manufacturer which was going out of business sell its production equipment to a manufacturer in Mexico. Sanders was as well-versed in Buy-Sell agreements with foreign corporations as he was in general sales commission disputes, which he quickly resolved and settled. We have a 100% success rate together in these matters, and the firm has contingent fees available to keep legal costs down. Overall, a win-win situation.

I had a very bad experience with Nicole Stednitz. She misrepresented my legal situation in order to get my business. After receiving a favorable order prior to having met her, she told me to file for a trial that took away my favorable orders, costing over $16,000 when she promised it would be under $2500 and which I later found out should never have been filed. She also charged hundreds for driving to the courthouse. For example, for one 15-minute hearing she arrived both late and unprepared to, she charged 4.1 hours. In small claims court where she sued to recover all of her inflated billing, she argued the 4.1 hours included her travel time and didn’t dispute the hearing itself took 15 minutes. Unfortunately, the judge awarded her the full amount. I’ve had other family law attorneys and was not prepared for a large percentage of attorney fees to go to traveling as none of my other attorneys charged for their travel, let alone more than the hearing itself. Also, each email costs 20% of her billable hour, even if it is one word. One email I sent had an attachment for which she charged hundreds of dollars for reviewing even though she didn’t seem to be familiar with what I had emailed her. Between emails and transportation, my retainer drained quickly each month and needed replenishing, without seeing any real progress in my case. I disputed her overcharges, didn’t hear from her for over three years until she suddenly sued me in small claims court charging thousands in interest the judge threw out but unfortunately, she got away with a lot I dispute is owed to her. She didn’t seem to care about me or my child and situation, but only about billing unreasonably. I personally regret hiring her and the bad outcome her representation resulted in.

After consulting several attorneys for help with a sticky tenant situation, Eileen Kendall’s consultation allowed me to finally exhale. The procedure for booking a consultation was easy and professional, payment made in advance, cost very fair. She had reviewed my docs submitted in advance, listened well, asked great clarifying questions, did not make assumptions, answered questions thoughtfully and clearly, offered clear and concrete advice, and had a proven, well-vetted procedure in place to proceed. Eileen Kendall was recommended by someone I trust who said, “I’ve referred several clients to Eileen and all of them have been super happy.” I can see why!

Lisa intentionally tried to instill fear into me regarding the potential outcomes of a Restraining Order and then charged me nearly $10,000 but did nothing. Initially I wanted to give 1 star, but ultimately, I am grateful that attorney Jason Stones was very responsive to me during a time of desperation, extreme stress, and panic- whereas my previous attorney kept me completely in the dark about everything- even as my child custody hearing rapidly approached. He was also able to get my ex's attorney to agree to a PPA with only days to spare until my trial commenced. Now for the negatives: During the initial hearing, my ex's attorney was making what felt like direct and personal attacks against me to which I felt didn't get enough pushback from Jason. I didn't feel like he was for me as hard as he should have been. He also never made a reply declaration to my ex's reply. My ex made several terrible allegations against me, which resulted in me being investigated by Social Services. Jason didn't do the work to speak with the social worker to find out what the conclusion of that investigation was, or obtain a copy of the report from that investigation. Luckily, I did, and the reports conclusions completely refuted my ex's allegations. After I read the report, I told Jason that we should be submitting this to the court. His response was that we couldn't do that because this was "not an evidentiary hearing." For me, that was the last straw and I moved on to another law firm with attorney's that DID submit a reply declaration to my ex and DID submit the report from Social Services. I'm not sure how they were able to submit the report even though this was supposedly not an evidentiary hearing. Funnily enough, that very report was brought up repeatedly by the Judge as she admonished my ex for withholding my son from me and now, thanks to a different firm, I have had my visitation restored and joint custody established.

Lawrence Markey was my attorney for a potential divorce that I was the respondent to years ago. I believed my separation from my wife was a temporary problem and kept an open mind about my family’s future. Lawrence was a very honest, caring and professional lawyer through every step of the process. He never tried to attack my wife’s character in order to get more than was deserved or needed. In short, he is one of the most moral attorneys I have ever known. He not only cared for me as a client, he cared for my wife and kept me grounded when I didn’t know what to do or how to handle situations. My wife and I were able to reconcile and have been together for fifteen years now. I would recommend Lawrence Markey to anyone looking for an honest, intelligent, hard working lawyer and not a slime ball that will give you bad representation in court.

As a Healthcare Professional and a Marine, Lawrence came highly recommended . He was professional, knowledgeable, courteous, and transparent on my upcoming divorce. He stated and outlined what we were going to do and possible outcomes. He took down my needs and preferred outcomes and we went from there. He fully explained all the possible outcomes I would have in my case considering the complexity. He broke-down where all the money was spent and regularly updated me on my case. If I had a question he was readily available to answer them through call or text. If you like an experience attorney that has the integrity and the balls to fight for you then this is the individual.

Back in 2004, I retained her to represent me in a custody case. Time was of the essence due to my wanting to take my child overseas for a job relocation. I had a hearing on a specific date. I asked her if she could meet the tight deadline with her schedule. She said she could. A few days before the court date when I couldn’t reach her, I was informed by her office that she was on vacation!!! I was absolutely livid. The court date was rescheduled. When she finally did appear in court on behalf, I did not feel she represented me because my ex ended up getting the better end of the deal with major concessions when I already had sole physical custody. I really wanted to file a formal complaint. For future custody and child support issues, I fared way better representing myself pro se.

I would look elsewhere if you need someone to handle your probate case matters with compassion and understanding. A few years back, I contacted The Probate House to see if they could help with some a la carte Guardianship services after my wife had passed away unexpectedly, leaving me as a single parent of 2 young kids. After a few email exchanges, it was clear The Probate House wasn't interested in helping me unless they received full Guardianship case representation. That's fine, no hard feelings...we're just not a good fit for each other. It was then the principal of the firm inexplicably chose to mock me in an email for asking for a la carte services (rather than full representation). This email was likely meant to be private to her staff but in hitting reply all I was cc'd on it. The exchange was wholely unprofessional and showed a total lack of compassion and empathy during a vunerable time for me; the behavior was particularly surprising because the principal later claimed in a follow-up apology she had just recently lost her own spouse. Probate matters are particularly sensitive in nature, and clients deserve to be working with genuinely supportive and understanding staff in these proceedings but I didn't receive any semblance of that here.

I had the good fortune recently to closely participate in a divorce settlement case in which David Yamamoto represented a family member of mine, “J”. The situation was more complex than average and I observed David drilling down into the details personally with his client to get a solid understanding of the flow of separate and community property assets. J and I were blown away by David’s coherent presentation of the facts, especially after having had a previous attorney who was unable to keep things straight. At court, David was an effective negotiator and helped J reach a settlement that aligned with his desired outcome. David’s reassuring “bedside manner” provided his client the confidence and security he needed in knowing that his attorney was thoroughly prepared on his behalf. I highly recommend David as a fair attorney who is invested in his client’s best interests.

David took the time to understand my situation and give clear direction as he entered late in the case - 2.75 years. He worked well with my devoted sister in law (a CPA) and develop a successful strategy. First and foremost I'd like to thank the team , and Mr.Pittera for reuniting me back with my daughter! A case like mine isn't something that you go about willy nilly, and for good reason. Im so happy that I chose Joseph to represent me. Not only did he accept to represent me in my case, but he did in a time frame that was a bit on the short side. I knew I was in good hands right off the bat at our first meeting. I say this because of the attention to detail, confidence, and passion that Joseph, his Wife, and their secretary showed. Yep , that's right , family helping families! Although my case was Family Law, I now have a lawyer for all aspects in Law,as I know Joseph is versed in multiple areas and can strategize with the best of them. Let me tell you you something that I was in awe of. When Joseph and I were in the courtroom and he was speaking to the Judge, he commanded the room. Not even 20 minutes into the case and the Judge was nodding her head and agreeing with all of the points Joseph was putting out ! I knew I won right then and there, and we sure did! If you are looking for someone to represent you in your upcoming case , please help yourself and choose this amazing professional!

Finalizing my divorce took an extremely long time, and there were several instances when I thought I could not continue, but Colleen Patricia and Staff always assured me that she would fight to secure the best outcome for me. Initially I hired a different divorce attorney but when she found out who my ex had hired she immediately advised me to contact Colleen. She told me Colleen and Pat had much greater experience with more difficult cases. I am sure glad I was referred to them From my initial meeting with Colleen I knew she was compassionate but also was tough as nails. She always let me feel that she had everything under control and was not fazed at all by the opposing attorney. While the other attorney was pushing for reconciliation, Colleen knew what was best for me. Colleen always returned my texts and would give me detailed responses to my questions. In the end when I was going to settle by giving my ex more than we had initially agreed on Colleen put her foot down and told his attorney we were definitely not. And you know what? They didn’t push it. I’m thrilled with the outcome and couldn’t be happier for hiring Barberis and Barberis. I hired Colleen Barberis back in spring 2017. She is a very nice attorney, but the competance and due dilligence was severly lacking. There were many, many thing that were mishandled including: a large issue with the way a domestic violence situation was reported to her, yet it got turned around on me! Many, many email from opposing counsel carlessly forwarded to me with no comment or question. The billing situation is a mess and lastly, she never, not once discussed with me hiw the changing tax laws in 2019 would effect my case and how to strategize. There never was a strategy.

I was referred to Mr Gerber when I needed the services of a divorce attorney, and was never sorry to have chosen his office during the ensuing process. If you need a Team to fight for every contingency that inevitably comes up, and you want to be treated as a Real Person by a Real Person, don’t hesitate to contact his office. Wise council, honesty, reliability, and with a genuine flair for communication, I am so happy I chose Team Gerber to guide and mentor me through the process. I wholeheartedly give Attorney Gerber my highest recommendation.

Mr. Gerber represented me over the course of the last few years in my divorce and child support hearings. He is not your typical attorney that will nickel and dime you for every phone call, email, or letter involving your case. He was professional, courteous and reasonable in his efforts and demands, being extremely knowledgeable of the laws and how judges tend to lean in the various courts, as to not waste my money, time or efforts in a battle. He is fair and looks out for your best interest, as well as that of any children involved in ones divorce. His friendly staff is respectful of your circumstances and eager to support and help you in anyway they can. His paralegal is also very well-versed in family law having many years of experience and eager to help you along the way. Without a doubt, I would highly recommend Donald Gerber to represent you and your family law matters.

I am mainly writing this review in response to Anonymous' negative review dated June 4, 2018 (he was not the one who hired Mr. Gerber, as he is my lawyer), as I am his ex and would like to point out that, as everyone knows, there are two sides to every story, especially in a divorce case. Of course everyone can have their own opinion, but to review someone who is not your own lawyer is definitely suspect and open to judgment. If anything, Mr. Gerber has done everything possible to get our divorce finalized, in order to avoid trials and added costs. He is not the one deliberately delaying our divorce, far from it. He has been practicing law in our area for decades, makes it a point to familiarize himself with how judges tend to rule (as any good lawyer should), and has provided me with sound legal advice throughout this divorce. He is not one of those lawyers who will simply take your money and allow you to pursue a personal vendetta, so if you are looking for that kind of lawyer, keep looking. As other reviewers have already said, he is fair, reasonable, ethical, responsive, cares about his clients, and tough when warranted. I would also like to note that if you have to keep stating in your review that it's "honest", then maybe there's a reason for that. Also, just take a look at my ex's other reviews and you will get a sense of what kind of person he is.

If I could give negative stars of Bruce A. Mandel, I would! Issues include: - A crucial missed deadline, even though I supplied all necessary information 2 full days in advance. - 2 more almost-missed deadlines. My counsel literally asked me to sign documents at 11pm twice, with midnight deadlines, even though I had supplied all requested information far in advance. - Several unanswered emails, miscommunication and lack of communication for months. - Bad advice from Bruce that almost cost me 50/50 custody of my son. - Bruce was absent during the only scheduled court hearing we had, and it was not caused by an emergency, he simply booked 2 cases at the same time on the same date, even though he told me his calendar was clear on my scheduled court date. - Extremely low quality work product in general, largely due to the constant last-second scrambling. - Complete failure to follow-through on the things we discussed, and he even failed to execute a 50/50 Custody Order for more than 4 months after a judge ordered him to write up that order, and I reminded him multiple times! - A massive misunderstanding regarding a 3rd court continuance, even though I emailed Bruce 4 times and called him once to make sure he understood the issues, he ended up making a massive blunder that essentially gave up our advantages entirely. - Bruce finally illegally withdrew from the case while the case was still ongoing, resulting in extremely damaging client abandonment less than 24 hours before a scheduled call with opposing counsel. I have filed a complaint with the CA State Bar, and demanded Arbitration of fees already. I am also in talks with a malpractice attorney, as I believe Bruce's failures to perform basic attorney functions have cost me more than just his fees at this point. My advice is to run, not walk, to any family law attorney OTHER Than Bruce A Mandel.

I had the unique experience of working with Bruce Mandel, even though he was originally hired by my ex-husband. Throughout this challenging process, Bruce and his team displayed an exceptional level of professionalism, compassion, and efficiency that truly set them apart. From the moment I engaged with his practice, I was met with kindness and understanding. Bruce not only helped me navigate the legal complexities of divorce but also went above and beyond by providing me guidance with the paperwork. The staff at Bruce Mandel's office deserves special recognition as well. They were consistently informative, promptly returning my calls and ensuring that I had the information I needed to move forward in a timely manner. Never once did I feel like a burden, and their willingness to assist was both comforting and greatly appreciated. Bruce Mandel and his team stood out as beacons of professionalism and support. Their exceptional service, combined with their genuine care for their clients, made a difficult process as smooth as possible. I couldn't recommend their services more highly.

My case was extremely involved and it was very difficult to find an attorney brave enough to get involved beyond the initial consultation. John stepped up and agreed to help, and help he did. He provided great counsel and support and laid out a winning strategy which led to a great outcome. I am so pleased that John handled my case and highly recommend his services. He truly cares and will guide you safely every step of the way.

I highly recommend. My friend referred me to Mr. Credell, whom she had hired previously and gotten positive results. I was in an emergency situation and Mr. Credell immediately got back to me and kept in touch consistently and thoroughly via phone, email and text. He won my case, and showed genuine care during this difficult time in my life.

Don't waste your money or time dealing with this Attorney! My Ex and I went into this guys office to use him as a mediator. After reaching an agreement in October, we were told our divorce would be FINALIZED by March (The date of separation was to be back dated to September 1st). After not hearing anything from John for several months, I emailed him (in March) attempting to find out what the status of our divorce was (since it should have been finalized by then). After having to send a couple of emails (due to not receiving a response), I was told that the courts were "backed up" and that was why it was delayed. I waited an additional month and again contacted John, who then told me that he needed a license plate number from one of our vehicles. After promptly giving him the information he needed, I again checked back a month later. John again gave me an excuse that made no sense. Our divorce was Finalized A YEAR after it was supposed to be backdated as the date of separation! I again contacted John on two occasions and requested a partial refund due to his negligence in properly filing our divorce paperwork. I'd suggest if you're even considering using this guy that you may either consider one of two things: 1. Do it yourself (it would be quicker stumbling through the process than the time this guys takes) or 2. Go some where else where the guy has a clue what he is doing! DO NOT USE THIS GUY!!!!!!!!!!!

This man was recommended to me from a friend who said her mother used to work in the same building as him. I can understand this because there are like 5-7 lawyers running out of the same building. I was very hopeful in my child custody case seing as how I was already divorced and the stipulation was laid out in TX. I was coming home from the military. Maybe he saw that as his payday I dont know but the man did ABSOLUTELY nothing for me besides filing the already drawn up divorce decree in California which I could have done myself for 60 bucks. Everytime he came to court (twice) he seemed disheveled and had no idea about my case. He was litterally reading up on my case while the judge was talking to other cases in front of me. And I don't mean refreshing his memory I mean he would ask me things like she did what? or why is this this way? Like he had no idea what he was doing and just getting this information for the first time. I initially paid him 2500 dollars and agreed to pay him 500 per month more until the 6000 dollar total was met. Apparetnly I was gettting a military discount. After the initial meeting/payment I never recieved a phone call or anything from him or his office despite me phoning him about a half a dozen times in 2 months and even showing up in his office unannounced to have his secretary tell me that he wasnt in. Get this. I literally saw him run into his office when he saw me!! And of course I could hear things going on back there. He wasnt in. WTF. I should have bolted then but my court date was that week. He calls me at 7pm the night before 830 court and asks if I know we have court tomorrow? WOW. We went throught the first round in court and I stuck by him because everything was falling in place. I guess any lawyer could have done it I just needed someone one to set up visitation (which was already stipulated) and get the ball rolling having been out of the country for so long (4 years). That was the initial court date. The second court date was set 2 months after that. Leaving the court building he has the nerve to hit me up for parking money meters stating he didn't have any change which I just thought was low class move. Anyway new court date in 2 months. I call, weekly, and keep getting blown off and I sent a payment in. Finally I decided to not send a payment in because I wasnt gettting any feedback and maybe that might actually get him to do something about it. The night before court again I get a call from his office this time telling me that Mr Shook is dropping me as a client for failure to pay. The night before I was supposed to show up to court from one missed payment deliberately done because my questions fell on deaf ears. No explination, no calls about the payment, nothing until the day before my case he drops me. THE MAN TOOK 4000 dollars from a Veteran!!!! As for my money I sat down with Mr Shook after showing up again uninvited only this time he couldnt run and hide. He waved all this paperwork in my face as proof he did something. Of the 56 pages in the document he was waving (and screaming at me literally) 3 were his work. The other 53 was the divorce decree from Texas me and my ex wife already had from 2009. His 3 additions? The request to transfer documents from TX to CA that was 2 pages and one page notifiying my intentions to persue legal action or somehting like that I dont understand legal stuff sorry. Thats it. 4 Grand for 2 documents.

I only gave 1 star since it wont ley me choose 0. My family hired Mr. Shook a little over 2 years ago after we were in need of a Criminal Defense attorney for my brother. Mr. Shook informed my brother's wife and my parents that he had dealt with the type of criminal case we needed an attorney for and was experienced. That was a lie. Mr. Shook was my brothers attorney when he was being charged for murder. It took over 1 year before the case went to trial. From the first meeting that my family had with Mr. SHOOK he was informed that my brother (the client) had been drinking all night on New Years Eve to the point that he had blacked out. Mr. Shook ignored us and never reviewed his medical records. In fact throughout the whole time he only visited with my brother in jail no more than twice. He would only see my brother during his hearings. He did no discovery work of his own a d relied on the discovery work that the prosecution team had. He never interviewed any witnesses. Mr. Shook claimed he would hire a state crime scene investigator. He never did. Through out the whole time he continued to ignore us telling him that my brother was intoxicated and not a regular drinker. Instead of subpoening my brothers medical records from the hospital to obtain any evidence of his blood alcohol levels he had my sister in law his wife running around doing it her self. He also told her to go to downtown LA to obtain. A copy of the paramedic report. That is his job as his attorney. That's why he was being paid for. He did nothing. After my brother was convicted for 1st degree murder because Mr. SHOOK defense was mistaken identity even though they had an eye witness. He failed to hire an expert to review my brothers hospital medical records. If he had done so they would have discover that his blood alcohol level was 3x the legal limit and also under the influence of drugs to the point that my brother blacked out and had no recollection of that mornings events. Therefore making this an involuntary manslaughter case not a murder case. So instead of my brother serving 8 to 20 years he's serving 50 years to life for first degree murder. Due to this we don't believe he worked more that 6 hours on my brothers trial through the 2 years and was not prepared to go to trial. Mr. Shook was so upset that we had decided to fire him and obtain an experienced attorney the day of the sentencing that we said my brother was a liar. If henreally believed that why would he even take my parents money and pocket it and accept to represent my brother??..Now we are working with a true criminal defense attorney that is handling my brothers appeal. Mr shook is now working with the prosecutor to have my brother appeal denied and giving false Information stating that we never informed him that my brother was intoxicated...Mr. Shook did not care about representing my brother all he wanted was to get paid and as soon as he did his job was done and he did nothing after that. I hope this review helps anyone out their and decide to go to a true criminal defense attorney instead of Mr. SHOOK. If you decide to hire him...well good luck.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
