Julius was very informative, so helpful in getting me divorced. It was quick and easy. If you have limited childcare he does consultations over video chat, and his office is right in town for meetings, to discuss the simplest way to get your needs taken care of. Julius is friendly, knowledgeable, and I am so happy he took the time to represent me, and help me get my divorce taken care of! Give him a call, you will not be disappointed!!!

That won't happen to me, I said. I am not of that race, nationality, or ethnicity, and so I did not speak out. That won’t happen to me, I said, I don’t practice that religion, and so I did not speak out. That won’t happen to me, I said, I’m not of that sexual orientation, and so I did not speak out. That won’t happen to me, I said, I’m not part of that income bracket, and so I did not speak out. That won’t happen to me, I said, I don’t have that disability, and so I did not speak out. That won’t happen to me, I said, until it was physically in my face, had me backed into a corner, and was spewing utter vitriol at me. That won't happen to me, I said, he'd never lay a hand on me, until one day the physical aggression caused me physical pain and injury. That won’t happen to me, I said, until thirteen months ago, when I found myself on the phone with a domestic violence hotline. That won’t happen to me, I said, until thirteen months ago, when I found myself hurriedly packing a bag and fleeing my home, and boarding an aircraft out of state, because I feared for my life and safety. Fifty years ago, when my mother and her family escaped their war-torn country with nothing but the clothes on their backs and one bag per person due to religious persecution, I never imagined that one day, fifty years into the future, that I too would one day find myself following in her footsteps, quite literally. I never imagined that I would one day find myself fleeing my home with nothing but the clothes on my back and one small carry-on bag, and boarding a same-day aircraft bound for 1,000+ miles away, because I too feared for my life and safety. Thirteen months ago, when I found myself on the phone with a local domestic violence agency in my state, I never imagined that the proverbial door would get slammed in my face, on the basis that I earned too much money to qualify for any help or support. Since I was born and raised abroad, and with my own family still living halfway around the world, it was in that moment that I truly realized, and that it genuinely sunk in, that I was going to be completely and entirely alone in the process of escaping the cycle of violence. In 1848, divorce was practically unheard of. Most states had fault-based divorce laws outlining the requirements and criteria permitting divorce: lunacy, adultery, desertion, or cruelty. This meant that couples could only pursue divorce IF they could prove, in a court of law, that one or the other had committed one of these offenses. However, given the laws (or lack thereof) governing women's rights and freedoms at the time, divorce was far more complex for women, as they remained at risk of being unable to regain their last names, unable to retain property acquired prior to their marriage, or unable to obtain custody of their children. These fault-based grounds are in stark contrast to the no-fault system that exists across most states today. Today, after decades of tireless advocacy, and thanks to incredible attorneys like Laurie Wasserman and Virginia Yeoman, people are no longer required to remain shackled to their spouses, and have the freedom to escape the cycle of violence. Thanks to the fabulous support of Laurie and Virginia, I've not only been able to survive, but I am slowly on my way to thriving again. The words "happiness" and "divorce" are the last two words you'd expect to see in the same sentence, but that is exactly what Virginia and Laurie have facilitated for me. For anyone considering engaging the services of Laurie Wasserman and her team, from the bottom of my heart, I wholeheartedly recommend them and their entire office. They'll not only save your life, but they will also help re-unlock your door to freedom, health, independence, and joy again.

Kerri Cohen provided exceptional care and dedication to my case, ensuring the well-being of both myself and my child. She was consistently available to address any questions or concerns I had and went above and beyond to advocate for us. If you’re seeking a lawyer who is determined, passionate, and deeply committed to her clients, look no further. I was initially apprehensive about the consultation, as my case was particularly complex and uncommon. However, after speaking with Kerri, I immediately felt confident in her abilities. Her strength, determination, and understanding of the profound impact of domestic violence reassured me that I was in capable hands. She recognized the gravity of the situation and took swift, decisive action to protect our future. I am incredibly grateful for her unwavering support and the successful outcome of my case. Kerri Cohen is a true fighter, and I cannot recommend her highly enough.

Dempsey helped me resolve issues pertaining to my divorce and custody dispute of my two year old son, and by way of referring me to another attorney also helped me resolve debt / financial ailments. As a 25 y.o. (at the time) dealing with divorce, I initially was very embarrassed of my predicament however I never once felt judged or dismissed by Dempsey. Additionally I had a hearing that was supposed to last 1.5-2 hours which, I kid you not, ended up lasting 9. I really appreciate that she was able to be present and attentive during that unexpected turn of events. Ultimately I was awarded exactly what I was petitioning for. I'm happy my son and I can now move forwards with our lives.

My experience working with Dempsey Nash has been professional and therapeutic. Dempsey is extremely patient and kind as well as professional as she gathers pertinent information and works toward resolution. She works from an emotional and sensitive platform and really understands your pain and challenge in making difficult decisions. She understood that despite the incredible pain, fear, anxiety and abuse I was enduring, I was still very concerned and worried about my ex-partner and wanted to work with him despite the mental health issues he expressed. She was sensitive and worked to help me understand my options and bring me to reasonable and supportive conclusions. She takes time to listen to you and your story and create a plan that works for you. Working with Dempey provided and opportunity to explore my relationship from a perspective that included my empathetic emotional feelings but was also objective and fair. This is difficult to do when you have endured years of abuse and control by a mentally ill individual. Dempsey never condems and always listens. She is as much a psychological counselor as she is a legal guide. Working with Dempsey was as healing as working with my counselors and you will learn about yourself and what you have endured in addition to finding your strength through the process because of her compassionate and passionate style. I feel so very fortunate to have found Dempsey to work with during one of the most difficult times of my life. I highly recommend consulting with and working with Dempsey Nash. She is a unique blend of a compassionate, intelligent, caring and confident humility...a rare find in the legal world. Elizabeth

My attorney, Debra Cruz, saved me & my son's emotional and physical well being- literally. My life was completely torn apart at the beginning of my separation. There was absolutely no light at the end of my tunnel. Debra's education, expertise, & emotional support saved me from losing my son. She walked my family and I through each & every step- always guiding and supporting me. She never failed me- not even once. The court proceedings got extremely confusing & technical for me to handle. A lot of divorcees choose to attempt to "go at it" alone- under no circumstance do I recommend that. Words could never begin the gratitude that I have for Ms. Cruz. And although my case has since been closed- Debra still makes her self available to me for questions &/or concerns about the future. I have battled many many issues both personally & with my ex husband & without Debra, I don't necessarily know I could have made it through. I still have to go back to court at some point late next year- and I can only pray that she and her team are 100% behind my son and I again!

Jack has represented me for the last 13 years or so. Jack, in my book, is a rare find for a lawyer. My freedom has been in his hands many times, and he has done right by me every time. Before Jack, I had other lawyers for who I was, just another case, or they would judge me for whatever crime I had committed. Jack always treated me like a man who did something stupid and got caught. I remember Jack telling the judge, " Your honor, my client is a good man who has a good job and works hard but sometimes makes stupid decisions." That wasn't just his defense; that was how he truly felt. So, if you want a Great lawyer who knows the laws and treats you like the person you are, Turnbull Brockmeyer Law Group is who you want on your side.

Jeff was an absolute pleasure to work with on setting up our wills and advance directives. From our introductory call to the signing of the final documents, Jeff walked us through the process efficiently and thoroughly. He answered all of our questions throughout and gave us all the guidance we needed. We appreciate that Jeff traveled to our home to complete the signing and filed the documents on our behalves. It was a straightforward process from beginning to end and we are thankful to Jeff for his legal knowhow and client focus.

He listened to me in full and talked me through the situation and some options that I had, even referring me to someone with different expertise who could also be of help to me. At no point, did he cut me off or try to sell me on his services, which I appreciated. Rather, he told me his opinion honestly and with good intent. I appreciated Jeff's professionalism and willingness to promptly talk to me and for his time. Thanks Jeff!

That won't happen to me, I said. I am not of that race, nationality, or ethnicity, and so I did not speak out. The best experience with a Lawyer I have ever had. Mr. Rogyom was extremely knowledgeable, personable, compassionate and kind when I needed assistance after the passing of my mom. I cannot give a high enough raving review. Thank you so much for your council, and walking me through this process. It was a pleasure working with you. Sincerely, and with gratitude. Mrs. Kelly

I called Jeff for a question that I had after being referred to him by someone else. Jeff was able to get with me on the phone me quickly and gave me his time quite readily.

I am immensely grateful for the exceptional work Amar Weisman has done for me and my children during one of the most challenging times in our lives. Amar's expertise in family law was clear as he navigated the complexities of our case with skill and precision. He always took the time to explain every step of the process, ensuring we understood our options and felt empowered to make informed decisions. But beyond his legal acumen, it was Amar's unwavering support and empathy that made the biggest difference. He was always there to listen, offering not just legal advice but emotional reassurance as well. It felt as though we had a trusted ally who genuinely cared about our well-being. Amar’s commitment to our case was unwavering, and I truly felt that he was fighting for us every step of the way. To Amar Weisman, thank you for being there for us when we needed you the most. I can't thank Stuart enough for his help during what at first seemed to be an amicable divorce, that later turned out to be difficult and challenging. His knowledge and experience of the law eased my stress and anxiety throughout the process and instilled a great amount of trust. Throughout I was always well informed, my phone calls promptly returned and all my questions and concerns were addressed. I was extremely satisfied with my representation and the counsel I received. Stuart was worth every penny I paid him! That said, I highly recommend the Law Offices of Stuart C. Axilbund for his legal expertise, to anyone who wants a qualified attorney who will watch out for your interest, who can be though when necessary, but who is also understanding and compassionate. Great Attorney!

I have already recommended Stuart multiple times already since my 2018 divorce. I found Stuart to be extremely responsive to all my communications. He provided sound advice for my situation, and his years of experience and expertise were obvious. Of equal importance, he was also a good steward of my funds, not allowing our case to go down roads that would not have had beneficial results. I am truly appreciative of all he did to guide me through what was an extremely emotional and difficult process. I would recommend him without reservation.

Andrea Sugar is the best lawyer I saw ever, professional, responsible, reply quickly and very cooperative and compassionate. I had a divorce case with her. It was done so fast less than 6 months. She was very professional and experienced in the court. It was so easy and fast case. And my financial experience with her was perfect. I was so worried about this part. At the end of my case, I could not believe how my case was that fast, successful and it did not cost me that much money. It was a very perfect experience with her.

My experience with Jennifer was wonderful. I was divorced for three years and was no longer receiving adequate support for my child. Child support was not an issue at the time of my divorce and a few years after. However, things changed and I needed support for my child. I was extremely afraid and sad that I needed to embark on legal proceedings to garner support. I didn’t receive any recommendations and was cold calling family law attorneys that I found on the web. Jennifer was one of the lawyers I found during my search. I was initially impressed with her credentials and her level of experience. Jennifer returned my call the same day I left her a message inquiring about her services. During that initial phone call she pulled up my case information from my divorce while I was on the phone with her. She reviewed my file and gave me great advice during our first conversation. I knew from the first phone call that she would be amazing. I met with Jennifer a few days later, with fears and tears. During that meeting she let me know that I had a great case, along with what to expect, how long the process would take, and what I may have to endure. I was extremely unsure of my rights, but Jennifer provided excellent legal counsel. Jennifer provided me with a sense of ease that I desperately needed. My case lasted almost a year, during that time Jennifer was always available, always provided everything I needed to know and what I needed to do along the way. Jennifer is excellent, she’s tough, but also diplomatic. Not only did Jennifer get the support that I was so unsure about, she shored up my custody agreement. I would highly recommend Jennifer to anyone looking for an understanding, supportive, knowledgeable, lawyer that will fight for you.

Like many other 1099 Employees, circumstances and just plain Life had me trying to clean up 17 years worth of IRS issues. I received Mark's phone number from a friend and have never once regretted it. His expertise, paired with his ability to effectively explain the what and how of Offer In Compromise Settlements helped prepare me for the long, often slow process of Tax Burden Relief. Things to note: like the rest of the World, Covid has created challenges for every Sector of life pertaining to dealing with the IRS. Please pay close attention to the initial first (and second) Consultations. The IRS is short on Employees so correspondence will most likely be slower than One would like to think. Don't be afraid to take notes, and PLEASE remember that we are in the midst of a Global Pandemic and remember the hierarchy of Contact seeing as On Site Services and times are altered in lieu of Covid. If your quandary is important, call his cell! If it's a Secondary or Tertiary request- email. Mr. Kell does not waste time with polite call-backs devoid of the answer to your question...but HE WILL call you back and he WILL effectively explain the answer to your question/s. Do everything he tells you to do as promptly as possible, and rest assured that you have selected the Top Attorney to help you resolve your tax issues with success the closest thing to a guarantee as possible in any Offer/Acceptance situation. Lastly, YOU MUST convey any pertinent information up front regardless of whether or not you think it matters. Thanks again Mark, you're an AMAZING ATTORNEY and I can't thank you enough for your services and hopefully future services moving forward. Andy Sunell

Prior to my case Mr. Berg managed to arrange the change of custody from a mother to a father of two daughters. In my case the custody of a son was changed from a mother to a father. In order to accomplish this Mr. Berg needed to have an understanding of every nuance of custody law and the ability to present a case in the same way that a salesman sells a product. Mr. Berg is a consummate player at both levels. At my request my former wife was not to be trashed in front of our son; we made the concession that she was an adequate and competent parent but that circumstances dictated that a change of custody would be in the best interest of the child. The circumstances that we argued against included that the mother was intending to leave the country permanently, that the living circumstances in her new home would provide no male authority figures, that the school calender would provide only about three weeks per year that the child could visit with his father, and that the mother would begin the move being unemployed. The alternative that was argued for was a father that had remarried and a family that the child already spent nearly half his time with each week and a step mother who was a clear asset to a good and secure home, with an American school calender which would provide about 11 weeks of visitation each year.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
