Atty.Shelemey was awesome. Not only is she intelligent but also caring and considerate. We had an uphill battle on this one. Yet atty.shelemey gave us great advice and was very diligent throughout this whole process. And might I say we won our case and we couldn't be happier. She also revised my will in no time all through this case...we could not have asked for better representation. Thank you Lea...

We have a blended family. We consulted with Attorney Lea Shelemey about parenting time issues. Her response was thoughtful, and considerate of our family’s needs. We had been through the traditional litigation model and despite our best efforts, the other party continued to be non-compliant in nearly every respect, and (more distressing) randomly withdrawing court-ordered parenting visits/time. Our experience with other attorneys was good, but going back to court did not seem go get us where we had hoped to be. Thanks to Lea’s guidance, we tried mediation, and that really helped. We have now made progress with the other party and have discovered a more satisfactory method for resolving our disputes. We continue to use mediation when we need to work through issues. Although Lea is a trained litigator, we appreciate her skill as a peacemaker (especially since I am a psychologist). I will definitely be going back to Ms. Shelemey when we need further guidance. Sincerely, Dr. J.

Crystal represented me in a very contentious divorce. Many lawyers tell you what you want to hear and then charge you to file things with the court which are worthless and will not really help your case. Crystal never does that. She gives you honest advice about what will work and what will not. She also really caresults about the people she represents.

I couldn’t agree more with all the glowing reviews. Over the past two years, I’ve witnessed Mark’s unwavering dedication and relentless drive. He remains as loyal, knowledgeable, understanding, and kind as ever. It’s like he’s the miracle worker of the legal world! Mark Chargualaf is an exceptional attorney who consistently delivers swift and outstanding results. From the very first day, he was able to tell me exactly what he can do for me and at this time, it was the BEST outcome any other atty told me. His dedication was evident as he began working tirelessly on my case immediately!! Despite the high-level charges I was facing, my case was remarkably settled within just two weeks, even before the first scheduled court date! Mark’s commitment didn’t stop there; he went above and beyond by expunging my case as soon as the serving was completed. This proactive approach saved me a tremendous amount of time and alleviated a great deal of stress. Mark’s efficiency and expertise are truly impressive. His ability to navigate the legal system with such proficiency and speed is commendable. After my first experience with Mark, I have went back to him for any legal issues/advice and he continues to be just as available, just as quick and motivated. He is the ONLY atty i recommend regardless of the offense!!

Rebecca Billick is a very competent and organized family law attorney. She maintains a very fair fee structure (seriously). She appropriately tailors her communication skills to the situation, from being diplomatic in a calm divorce settlement, to fighting like a mama bear in a contentious court hearing. She provides timely responses, cares about my situation (not a given these days), and works hard for a favorable outcome. Attorney Billick provides excellent advice, is very intelligent, and quick on her feet. Like a master chess player, she anticipates possible outcomes, and provides sounds recommendations on how to respond. I’ve recommended Rebecca to others, and will continue to do so.

Divorce is usually not an easy process to go through. My particular case was and is a difficult one. Rebecca helped me every step of the way and she continues to help me. During a particularly stressful situation involving my children, I called upon Rebecca to handle a crisis for me and she came through. She also isn't afraid to tell you when you're in the wrong. She works for you and will do what you ask, but sometimes a wake up call is necessary and she will let you know. She is also very knowledgeable and technologically savvy.

He does not think to interview schools, coaches, family members or friends, also! He believed the other party's lies and lost my case because of him! Do not hire for family law. Attorney Phillips has been representing me on a family law case for the past year. Attorney Phillips is highly respected by his peers and the Courts in Northwest Indiana. He came recommended to me by multiple other counsel when I was looking for another family law attorney to take over the case, and I am very pleased that I engaged Attorney Phillips. He has honestly accomplished more in one year as the attorney in my family law case than what three different local attorneys had collectively accomplished over a 4-year time frame. The issues that have arisen from my family law case have been abundant, and it by no means has been your average divorce and/or custody dispute. However, that hasn’t stopped Mr. Phillips from relentlessly litigating the matter on its merits and representing my interests in Court. Throughout my family law case Attorney Phillips has successfully argued evidentiary matters, contempt matters, jurisdictional matters, an injunction matter, and custody matters. He has briefed issues of fact and law through various motions and memorandums of law, he has successfully argued multiple motions in oral arguments made to the Court, and he is a skilled at cross examination. Attorney Phillips has always been responsive to my inquiries. He has on numerous occasions set aside time for me to come into his office for us to go over matters and issues pending in my case so that I know what’s going on, and if there are ever any issues that come up he has always reached out to me to discuss them. Attorney Phillips is extremely compassionate and understanding, and he genuinely cares about his clients. My only wish is that I would have hired Attorney Phillips earlier in my case. If I had, I am certain that it never would have become the mess it had become. But, as the old saying goes…it’s better late than never. If you are looking for a family law or personal injury attorney, you should sit down and have a conversation with Attorney Phillips. You’ll be glad you did!

I hired Mike Langer when I went through my divorce in 2011. I was a stay at home mom and had no income whatsoever and when it came time for support checks to start, he did not set anything up. I had to not only borrow money from my mom, I had to call him instead of him getting it started for me then charged me for the phone call. By this time my ex was over 3 months behind.. I was looking frantically for a job to support myself and my two children and he kept telling me to hurry and get a job since my soon to be ex was tired of supporting me… I had at least 3 interviews a week and no one was hiring a 45 year old mom that hasn’t worked in 20 years. I had to walk away from the home because I did not make enough money to retain it and had to use my 401(k) money from a previous job to put down on the new home and Langer was supposed to Quadro the money and did not so I was taxed on the money that I took out and all the IRS over $8000. When I called him on this he immediately had the money transferred and charged me an overnight fee for it! Never once did he suggest having my soon to be ex pay attorney fees nor did he offer to correct the errors he and his office had made. If I would’ve known I would’ve gotten them on errors and omissions! Do not hire this lawyer!

Mr. Langer was my second attorney in my recently settled divorce. He is what I refer to as "The Closer". He was able to take the necessary steps to move my divorce toward its conclusion. Mr Langer, as well as his entire office staff, impressed me with the professionalism and kindness with which they handled my case; as it was one of the most difficult times in my life. I always felt informed, and I felt as though my money was well spent on this highly regarded attorney in our community. You can't go wrong with Langer and Langer!

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
