If I could have given Nicole zero stars, I would have. I have never seen a more one sided attorney in my life. During the most important court case I’ve ever had to deal with (custody), She gave the most inaccurate, opinionated prospectives I’ve ever witnessed. She never viewed ANY of my supporting documents and literally spoke to me for 5 minutes during a custody hearing. That is hardly enough time to make a determination on the rightful guardianship of a child. I would not hire her to represent my goldfish let alone leave my lively hood in her hands. Good luck to whoever is forced to have her as court appointed anything.

I have NEVER seen someone so sloppy and unprofessional in the court room. She would blatantly flirt with my ex husband in front of the entire court room. She was supposed to represent my child but was in his back pocket the entire time. She spoke to me for exactly 44 minutes through our entire (months long) process meanwhile she was running to my ex after the court hearings. Offered him a home visit I didn’t get, and blatantly LIED to the courtroom and in her evaluation. She gave all of her reports late and they had absolutely nothing factual, just what she took as truth from my ex husband. This woman is a disgrace and I do not know how she sleeps at night being the vile disgusting excuse of a human that she is. If she is assigned to you, especially if you’ve been abused by the other party, GET HER OFF YOUR CASE NOW. She should not be allowed in another courtroom or to be the voice for another child ever again.

During the course of my husband and I filing bankruptcy, Nicole kept us informed every step of the way. She was more than willing to help us find a way to get important documents to her that the trustee would accept. She never became overwhelmed. I would recommend her to any one going through bankruptcy in Virginia.

Ms. Rice handled my divorce case which also involved custody and visitation of my children. I am a former military wife. Ms. Rice exhibited extreme knowledge concerning military retirement and other military benefits. She was aware of and prepared the special orders that were required to divide military retirement accounts. Ms. Rice and her staff were always responsive to my calls. Ms. Rice answered my numerous questions and gave me legal advice that was always accurate. I would recommend Ms. Rice as an excellent family lawyer. If I have any need for a family lawyer in the future, Ms. Rice will be my first call.

I hired this attorney to represent me during a contested divorce. I not only lost everything to the woman that I divorced, I ended up losing my entire savings to this over paid, incompetent buffoon and the law firm that she represents. I had my concerns about her preparation of my case, so I scheduled an appointment to talk with one of the law firm's partners about my concerns. Needless to say that approach did not work in my favor, as the partner is as big or maybe bigger culpret. This attorney is not making the grade. I was told at the law firm that she has credentials to handle a military divorce; however, in my experience, she has absolutely no loyalty to her client. I completed all of the paperwork as requested, and low and behold, if the ex-spouce didn't get the property, the attorney did. She was a complete disappointment. I was charged for things on their itemized sheets that I could not believe. Let me provide one example, everytime she picked up my case she had to re-read the entire case folder and charged for for re-reading the entire case folder even though nothing had transpired in the case. I paid for total incompetence! She is a Gem.

After having a difficult time (and that’s being nice) being able to see his kids, my boyfriend and I decided to seek legal help. He was told about Mary Napier, and we decided to go for a consultation because it couldn’t hurt to see if she could help. After having a horrible experience with another law firm he was not expecting much. From day 1, Mary has been able to answer any and all questions we’ve had (and I have a lot as I’ve never gone through anything like this before). My boyfriends ex was something else at the beginning of all this, and all he wanted to do was be a father. Mary actually spoke up for him in court, which he didn’t have before with his former lawyer. She listened to what we had to say and didn’t sugar coat things..which I appreciate! I’ve been extremely happy with Mary’s willingness to explain things to me. Let’s be honest, child support and custody is a difficult process. She made it as painless and easy as possible. The only issue I had was sometimes my emails would go unanswered, and I completely understand she is a very busy person! Maybe having an assistant help out with emails could help her out some. We are very, very thankful and happy with our outcome. He gets to be the best father to his 2 girls..co-parenting is actually happening with his ex (hallelujah!) and I get to be a “step” mom to the most precious and sweetest girls. Our little family thanks Mary Napier for everything she’s done for us!

Just typing her name gives me awful anxiety. Mary Napier doesn't understand the impact her poor decisions have on her clients. After working with her for nearly an entire year, she went to our first court date completely unprepared, not even understanding the basic facts of our case. She consistently ignores her emails, and when asked about the lack of communication she told me I have to schedule a phone conference if I want speedy communication. That isn't much to ask, so i started setting up phone appointments. We live out of state so we couldn't meet in person. She missed 4 appointments in a row on the phone after telling us that it was the best way to contact her. Additionally, any time we asked a question she would snicker or chuckle like we were asking a silly question. She never reassured us of anything when we had concerns. The answers all sounded the same. "Well I can't say either way," "well it COULD work for you, but I can't say for certain," "I mean I honestly can't really say." These are just a few examples of her terrible responses to our questions. After our first hearing, she sent us an email saying it went great. As we read the email, it turns out every single thing our "opponent" asked for was granted. How exactly did you come to the conclusion that court went well, when you failed to explain to the judge even the most basic and essential points of our side? It's like we spent $1500 on a lawyer for the other party. Mary is condescending and useless in the courtroom. In fact, I'm confident that I could have represented myself with better results than we had with this lawyer. Mary doesn't keep track of important points, she doesn't take the time to understand the full story, she is terrible at communicating, and she lacks the passion necessary to defend people in cases that change their entire lives. She doesn't understand that as a lawyer, it is her duty to zealously represent her clients. She also doesn't understand that if she isn't performing her job well, she is impacting the client for the rest of their life. To her, it's like the paycheck is all that matters. We decided we were fed up when Mary thought it would be appropriate to HANG UP on us after we told her we feel she lacks empathy and compassion for our case. The saddest part of this for Mary Napier is that our son is only 3 years old now, and we will likely be needing a lawyer until he is 18 due to the difficult relationship with his birth mother. We were looking for a lawyer we could maintain a working relationship with and return to for cases in the future. Unfortunately, Mary wasted almost a year of our lives that we will never get back, and at a critical time in the development of our son. It is blatantly obvious that this attorney doesn't know what she's doing. Save yourself the time and money and heartache and find somebody else!!

Mary Napier went above and beyond for me with my child custody case. I was asking for 50/50 joint custody, however she managing to get me primary physical and legal custody. She was very professional and always knew the answer to any legal questions I asked. I felt like the odds were against me going into court but during court her professionalism and experience made me optimistic before the judge decided. I would recommend her to anyone in a child custody battle especially a father.

She helped me to get a name change for my child who is a minor.i shopped around for a lawyer for about 3 months and all other lawyers were wanting to charge me $1,300-$1,800 and made it sound like my case was very difficult and would most likely not turn out the way I wanted. I spoke with Ms. Jackson over the phone and met with her in her office and she asked about the circumstances. She let me know we had a great chance at winning this case and went as far as to explain why. She charged me a reasonable flat fee and we had a court date set for the next month. She arrived on time and was very organized and knowledgable. I got my child's name changed as I wanted and am extremely happy with her services.

I used Mr. Hendrickson to represent me for a judgment I won while we were stationed away from our home. Not only did I waste my money on his services, he filled out the paperwork with the court incorrectly. I took him to court and won my judgment and he refuses to pay me. I wrote to the Bar Association and he was reprimanded and had to pay a fine. I garnished his bank account and he filed an emergency Homestead Deed to stop me from collecting my judgment. The Judge sided with him and I have to find another way to collect my judgment. He is a liar and told another Judge he never was paid his fees, which I have a canceled check signed by him. His case against me was dismissed. He put a lien on my home and refused to remove it. I had to get the Judge to sign off on documents proving that I didn't owe him anything. He is a lawyer that should be in jail for contempt. Its pretty bad when the Bar Association finds you for your wrongdoings. They should have made him pay me my judgment.

I could not have asked for a more supportive, thorough, and professional experience during a very difficult custody trial. This was one of the longest custody trials that our judge has ever seen. Throughout my experience, from the initial phone call to the final day of court, I felt well taken care of and I was confident the best interest of my child was always at the forefront of the case. Mr. Jeffries was straightforward throughout the entire process, steadfast, and provided me with the confidence I needed to make it through this trial. Michelle, his assistant, always greeted me in a warm and friendly manner and was a pleasure to work with as well. Mr. Jeffries is not your average attorney. He is constantly committing his time to researching the most up-to-date legal practices, laws, and relevant information available to provide you with a reliable and competitive advantage in the courtroom. He pays incredible attention to detail and was always prompt to respond when I needed to speak with him. I didn’t think I would find an attorney who would care about my case as much as me, but I feel Mr. Jeffries was just as committed and passionate about my case. It is incredibly rare to find an attorney with the experience, knowledge, professionalism, commitment, passion, and care he offers. If you’re looking for an attorney, Mr. Jeffries is a wise investment. I highly recommend him!

Ms. Neville is one of the most hardworking attorneys I have seen. She will do whatever necessary to ensure the best possible outcome. She is also honest and transparent which although difficult, is important to manage client expectations. She is blunt, will not just tell people what they want to hear to appease them. I was pawned off on Ms. Neville because the more experienced attorney in the firm that I had consulted with wasn’t available for my hearing date. After the firm received my retainer she immediately cast doubt upon her own abilities to be successful in my case and told me that it didn’t look good. As my case is still ongoing with a new attorney I can’t divulge too many details but I will say a few things. This attorney did not fight for my case at all. The judge gave my ex temporary full legal and physical custody (a man who abused me for 8 years and only had visitation and 50% legal of our child ) and she didn’t even request visitation on my behalf. I’m not a criminal and have never hurt, neglected or not provided for my child. The judge made her decision based on what SHE felt was a factor and the attorney didn’t object, dispute it or argue on my behalf. When the attorney addressed the judge and went to say my name - she FORGOT MY NAME. Maybe if someone is paying you thousands of dollars you try to remember who you’re standing next to and representing. She also emailed me a document that contained another minor child’s name and when I pointed it out she stated that she had used a prior case document as a template. The amount of time she charged me for was outrageous considering she used other documentation as a template - and I have to wonder if she’s using my information as a template and then sending it to someone else. She also repeatedly got details wrong that I corrected over and over. I gave her a wealth of information and evidence and she stammered in front of the judge. She also forwarded emails between herself and the other attorney in which they engaged in chitchat about their own kids’ play dates while discussing my case! I do not recommend this attorney - find someone who will fight for you and remember your name in court. She also has my case file and a binder full of evidence that she has not given to me despite my requests for her to do so. If you want a copy and paste attorney - she’s your gal - if you want someone who will fight for you and remember your name - keep looking!

I was arrested in mid- March 2018 of stalking. This attorney was court appointed due to the plaintiff getting me fired by arranging to have me arrested at my place of work. My attorney came to jail to speak with me for approximately for 20 minutes prior to my bond hearing. He told me the judge would deny me bond, which is what happened. My trial was to take place July 23, 2018. I needed to work to maintain my mortgage and other bills and tried to obtain a work release. I sent a letter to the York county circuit clerk to obtain permission from the judge to work. After not receiving a reply from the court, I had a friend contact the court and she was told the work release request had to go through my lawyer and that the clerk had forwarded my letter to the lawyer. Again, not having received a reply, I had my friend call (leaving a message with an assistant) and send a fax to the attorney – still no reply. I attempted to call my attorney from jail but the phone would cut off if the number called went to voice mail, which was the case. Finally, I sent a letter to the attorney to the address that was on a business card that the jail provided. The letter came back as “address unknown”. The address was the same as listed on the attorney’s website. This process took over a month. In early May, my cell door opened at 5 am. I was told by the block officer that I had court that day. I had not been previously contacted that I would be taken to court on that day. I was taken to the courthouse and placed in a holding cell. After several hours I was led to a small room where this attorney was present. He said something to the effect of let’s get you out of here. There was a plea deal and knowing I needed to return to my job, I accepted it – with the court providing paper work that stated I accepted the plea deal after having had an opportunity to go to trial. I would rather have gotten the work release and stayed in jail until the initial July 23 trial date. I wanted to present evidence at the trial that proved that my accuser had lied. Had I not accepted the plea deal that day, this attorney would not have been prepared to effectively represent me. The 20 minute meeting prior to my bond hearing was our only contact and he never asked for evidence. Steven Barnette did not inform me of my new court date and I believe he did this knowing full well that I needed to work to pay my mortgage. I further believe he allowed me to be “surprised” so that I would be willing to accept a plea deal and he would not have to put forth much effort in this case. Mr. Barnett showed a lack of professionalism and a lack of integrity.

I hired Mr. Wigodsky to handle an accident case. It has been a few weeks since it was settled, and I am still processing the fact that this enormous weight has been lifted. When I made the decision to hire an attorney, he was #1 on my list. After speaking with him and the team, I knew that this was who I wanted to represent me, and threw the list out. Dealing with insurance companies and other issues surrounding an accident can be extremely overwhelming. With Mr. Wigodsky and his team on my side, I was informed of all developments along the way, and any additional steps I should take. I was able to focus on my recovery without added stress. When my case finally settled, I was thrilled. It took me a while to put my thoughts into writing, because there are no words that describe just how impressed I was with my attorney, and the firm's services. You will not find any other attorney who is more competent, dedicated or experienced in this area of law. The support staff also went above and beyond. I wanted the best on my side, and I knew I had it in Mr. Wigodsky. I hope that I never get into another accident, but know without a doubt that I would hire him again.

Do yourself a great favor and I promise you that you will be thankful for it, look for another lawyer that is worth it because this is the worst you can have. because apart from the fact that he excites you by saying that you can win, he only wants to be in court to charge you more. I ended up fired him because I never trusted it and after I fired him he sent me another bill for 5,000 dlrs for doing nothing and gave me a few days to pay him or he would sue me. A true group of lying criminals. Presented false evidence to the fairfax court was a direct cause of me being beaten half to death. Is why I am homeless and disabled. Also due to this firm I stand a very high risk of losing my leg and possibly my life from being forced to live outside for a year.

He was the most rude and disrespectful lawyers I have ever talked to. He diminishes you as a person in the way he talks and did not really help me. I wondered if he was really there for the other party. So unprofessional, will never use!

I sat in court and wondered if Richard Davis was there to defend or Offend me. His actions in the court room were jaw dropping, he did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to defend me. He was paid in full but he did not review my case or meet with me until the day before court. He spent 5 minutes with me and it showed in the courtroom. Don't waste your money on this guy, you will get more satisfaction flushing your money down the toilet either way your money will be wasted.

Melvin Hill is currently representing me in a case, I am very disappointed. He is not aggressive and every prediction he has had about our case has been false. He seems to non nonchalant about the outcome of your case. His prices our fair but it is worth it to spend the extra money for an aggressive attorney who cares.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
