I’ve been dealing with this law firm since October I had a work incident to where my finger got cut off I called the law firm and Ambria was assigned to me not knowing she is just a receptionist and not a lawyer, she not only doesn’t answer phone calls nor text messages but also played as if she was my lawyer, I couldn’t get my prescriptions nor was I receiving my correct pay from worker’s compensation, I kept calling and leaving voicemails because every time I call it goes to voicemail then one day I was told my lawyer would be Tammy then Shannon, however Shannon called me and was highly disrespectful to me even hung up in my face with all that they still wanted 25 percent of a settlement that I never received, I strongly urge people not to use this law firm for anything, you get the run around, you don’t get all your wages, plus you get disrespected just for calling because you have a receptionist that’s trying to play as a lawyer I should file a lawsuit against them for Emotional Distress

We chose the law offices of Lewis and Keller. Leah Keller handled our case and went above and beyond to ensure we were taken care of from start to finish. She and her assistant Samantha exceeded all of our expectations and helped us move forward after going though a traumatic accident. Highly recommend if your looking for someone to fight for you and your case. Forever grateful for their strength and support.

Tom Floeter is an excellent attorney. He helped me fight my divorce case very well. He helped me tremendously in communicating with my ex-husband to help me get through the case. He was knowledgeable and was prepared to handle challenging issues in my case. He allowed the process to unfold at its own pace which allowed both parties to take the time to make a clear decision to their best advantage. I have no words for it how nicely he handled my case. I am ever so grateful to him for that and would recommend him to anyone seeking for this type of help.

I ended up paying another lawyer to fix the mess he made of my Dad's estate. So now have paid for it twice. On top of that he would not return any of my retainer , or my files.

I was a child last time I saw her, but I will never forget what she did for my brother and myself (approx ages 12 and 14 at the time). I cannot begin to understand the difficulty of deciding a child custody case, but am eternally grateful that she presided over ours. Not only did she spend quality time getting to know my brother and I, but she dug deep enough into the case to really know what was transpiring so she could make the best educated decision with our best interest in mind. Our emotional healing began that day, as she guided us through the process without us having to bear witness on the stand (which one of our parents demanded). Afterwards, she kept in touch with us through monitoring our grades/attendance in school. I will eternally be thankful to God that He placed her in our lives, and hope that she continues to grow successfully in whatever she chooses to do. You will not be led astray by putting your trust in this earthbound angel.

Without a doubt, Ms. Biggs is the worst attorney to practice law in North Carolina. Her billing reflects an attorney with experience and knowledge but she delivers very little to justify her fees. The filings were late and or incomplete. She made my divorce exceedingly more difficult than was required. I hope that anyone reading this review will consider a more experience and less inflamatory attorney

If you want an attorney who doesn’t call back, communicate to you and you hand your kid over to a complete dysfunctional human all because they are doing what they think is best without ANY input from you the client then hire Ruth Bradshaw!!! I was given emergency custody of my child and went to what was supposed to be an extension hearing requesting a continuance because he had hired a new attorney wasn’t an extension at all , she listened to everything his attorney said and agreed to drop the emergency custody and gave him right back a child he hasn’t seen in months all behind closed doors without even talking to me!!! And his attorney lied telling Ruth that the 50b his ex had taken out was going to be dropped and without even talking to me Ruth listens and agrees, 2 weeks later the ex’s 50b was granted and never dropped at all..then after 4 continuances and not getting to be heard because of a physc eval that had proven the opposing party to be crazy (and I never received a single calendar request to any of the “set” hearings) she withdraws!!! Leaving me with a bill of over 8000, and already paying over 3500 I got NO WHerE by hiring Ruth Bradshaw! I honestly thought she would treat my child as she did her own but boy was I wrong, she didn’t fight at all for my rights my entire attorney bill could have all been avoided had she even spoke with me and my concerns the day of court. Instead the entire bill is all because of her going back and forth with the opposing council because nothing was determined behind closed doors the day of court other than him getting the child back like nothing happened; he had three criminal charges and she acted like he hadn’t beat a female black and blue, chased her around until 1 pm looking for her with my daughter in the back of the car, or ran from the cops and hid for 5 days. Completely insane!!! No one can believe he even has what he has now after everything that’s happened and Now I FINALLY have a court day for a month out and conveniently she has now withdrawn and all of a sudden I finally am going to be before a judge, WITHOUT an attorney. Thanks for nothing Ruth Bradshaw!! If you want an attorney to represent and fight for your child DO NOT hire Ruth Bradshaw, trust me. You won’t be sorry if you don’t.. I hope this review helps someone because I wish I had seen something like this to know how she really was before I hired her..

Ruth represented me as my main counsel in a very unpleasant, unexpected custody battle spanning two states. I could not have created a more steadfast, competent, capable attorney had I had to design one. Her ability to stay focused on the myriad legal issues --while helping me to remain balanced in a very unfamiliar environment --was invaluable to me throughout the proceedings. She communicated directly and openly, explaining each legal hurdle we faced and the long-term implications of every decision point for both me and --more importantly --my daughter. Her approach allowed me to remove the natural emotional haze that these situations create, clearly analyze my options for the long-term welfare of my daughter, and make the decisions required to ensure that welfare. I could not recommend Ruth any higher.

I regretted ever calling him. I hired him for a civil case and he totally flopped. It was very difficult contacting him. He wouldn't return my phone calls. He didn't counsel me at all. I ended up losing money and time. I discussed how awful my case was being handled to a friend who shared that info with a family member. That family told me whatever I do don't go to Cecil. But unfortunately I had already given him money. Run from this lawyer. Hire someone who knows what they are doing and won't hustle you out of money. Horrible lawyer÷

When I signed my contract 5 years ago i realized that after the agreement was discussed and i signed it, i realized there were tongs of stuff in there that i did not like and was not okay with. But the contract itself was so confusing i did not know what any of it meant. When i asked her about something we had discussed she said that wasn't in there. So i don't understand why it was discussed if it wasn't in there. Very disappointed with her lack of professionalism and now i cannot take my own child on a vacation unless its during the months of JUNE< JULY or august. Which are overpriced summer months. So basically if i took my son on vacation not in those months it's illegal unless agreed. But since i can't come to an agreement i think it's nonsence that my EX is yet again ruining my life and i can't do much to change it. VERY UNHAPPY> WILL NEVER RETURN. I hired her not understanding all the hidden things she put in my contract that didn't make sence to me. Now i'm really regretting this> Lawyers have a way of convincing you it's best when they don't even put the family first. This doesn't benefit my family. We love to travel and this is complete and utter nonsense to not be able to take my child on a vacation when he's not in school weather it's summer or not dumbest thing i've ever heard. Fired with pleasure! Got a new one now in Greensboro

We retained this lawyer October 2014 for custody and divorce. We met with him 2 times between October and March with October being the first time we met. He admitted to not even looking at our case and couldn't even remember how many children we had. It is now April and the case has been continued again! We are asking for another meeting to fire him. We didn't do our research because we wanted another lawyer that was in his practice but got him instead.

I do not recommend Mr. ANTHONY J. VRSECKY as a law firm for anybody who needs help with domestic violation case, he was not interested enough to solve my case by asking the judge for dismissal of my charges, but he instead he was negotiating with the prosecutor to solve the case by letting me taking a battery probation course, I refused that because I was completely innocent, and that will impact my background check history, in addition to that he refused and ignored my phone calls and emails, I had to fire him, and I hired another law firm who has a professional and he has more experience than Mr. Versecky, the new law firm was able to win the case immediately due to lack evidence so the judge has no choice but to dismiss it, so my recommendation to avoid hiring Mr. ANTHONY J. VRSECKY if you have a serious charge just think twice before going to him you will waste your time and your money.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
