So it began a year ago when I hired Mrs White to take her on a case as to where a lighter caused my car to catch on fire... 8 months into her taking my case I could not get any information nothing was being done there was never an update I finally complained and the very next day I got a letter of declination... So after I received my email of declination I called Miss White and she tried to say that it was because there was not enough evidence and the story had changed which the story had never changed you cannot waiver from the truth. Miss White proceeded to say that she would continue to go after the manufacturer of the lighter company for the amount that he offered being $2,500 when there was clearly $7,100 worth of damage done to my car. So at this point it being too late for me to hire another attorney a year after the fact I was going to agree on yes please get the 2500 will ever since then I have been trying to get ahold of Mrs White via emailas well as phone I cannot get ahold of her and she does not call me back so where do I go from here if you ask me that's pretty lousy to do someone that was expecting you to fight for them but because you complain they resign from your case

She is my Guardian Angel. Seriously. She is so calm and helped me in a very hard time and just like she promised, she won my case like a Pro. Please don’t let the billboards fool you, Mrs. Tanya is one of the best lawyers you can ever find and this is coming from someone that has been dealing with more than 10-20 lawyers in past 5 years. She is so calm, professional, on point, doesn’t get distracted by nonsense, her calmness made me feel so comfortable because I had a very bad situation and she is not like other attorneys who are intimidating. I love her so much and I will make sure to always use her for Wills, trusts, whatever I need. By the way she is very fair with pricing and no words can describe her wisdom. Please don’t make the mistake of going with someone else. She is the real deal. No drama, she won the case like a Pro. Focused, determined to help people, very sweet and a gift to humanity. Words cannot describe her knowledge and wisdom!! Hire her. You wont regret it!!

I had a very disappointing experience with Scott Millard. From the start, communication was a major issue. Despite multiple emails and phone calls, they often took weeks to respond, leaving me uncertain about the status of my case. During critical moments, such as court appearances and filing deadlines, they were either late or completely unprepared. On one occasion, they even missed a court date without notifying me in advance, which caused significant delays and frustration. I also found their advice to be inconsistent and at times unclear, which made me question their expertise and commitment to my case. While I understand that legal cases can be complex, the lack of professionalism and attention to detail made the process much more stressful than it needed to be. I would not recommend this attorney to others based on my experience. PLEASE FIND ELSEWHERE

I hired Scott to help me with my MIP. He knew how to work the system effectively, and how to get it off my record. It took some time, but he was able to get it off my record without it even going to court. He took care of everything, as soon as I hired him it was like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. He was the perfect man for the job.

Currently handling a case for my 19 year old who was trapped into taking a breathalyzer on campus. This attorney spent a lot of time with her on the phone and in consultation, explained how the case would be handled. We live out of state and she had to handle most of the attorney search herself- . Treated her like a younger sister, not just a case. Some of his cases are handled in Holland too, I believe-. I read a lot of articles on judge Post in Ottawa County, Your children should avoid Ottawa county and the semi-demented judge Post if at all possible. Fees are in the middle range of all the quotes my daughter received. Worth every penny and more!!!!!(contacted over 10 attorneys) some didn't even return calls to her.

Erwin Dunlop has been my attorney for about 2 years. I live in a different state than where he practices and I am so glad I found him. I am not able to be present for my case but that is never an issue since I can depend on Mr. Dunlop to represent me as only he knows how to. He responds to my inquiries very fast, he keeps me up to date with everything, he is very knowledgeable and he is the type of attorney you want on your corner and not against you. When he represents you he has your best interest at heart. I will have him as my attorney as long as I have to, I trust him wholeheartedly and I highly recommend him.

He claims to be available and eager to help, but trust me, he’s only interested in your money! You are not his priority; his other clients are, except when it comes to billing. Charging $500 per hour is a rip-off. I had to change lawyers, though he wanted to fire me first because I told him I was unhappy with his service. What kind of lawyer fires a client instead of helping them in their most vulnerable time? For example, he wasn’t aware that if the case went to court and my ex lost, they would have to pay all fees. How can a good lawyer miss that? My new lawyer noticed this immediately. This is just one of many examples of his poor performance. However, his paralegal, Sophia, is competent. He will likely claim this review is not from a real client, but if that were true, how would I know that he goes to church on Sundays, his paralegal is named Sophia, he started at Omar’s in 2020, he has a corner office, and the company has a goldfish tank?

Bert Barclay is not only one heck of an Attorney, but one class act human being. I had the privilege of hiring Mr. Barclay as my attorney last year. Not one moment through the horrendous 6 month divorce period did Bert let his guard down, lose composure or integrity, nor let me lose my own! He was by my side through the thick of the thick and helped me get through the toughest time to date in my life. Not to mention a great outcome to end all as well. I still talk to Bert from time to time, that should tell you the kind of attorney Bert is! Very appreciative for his Professionalism, help, guidance, mentorship and friendship!

Bert is a thorough, conscientious, and caring lawyer. Along with his paralegal Darlene, they will take you through the process. Let's face it, divorce is messy and it's often a bumpy ride, for me an emotional one spanning many decades of marriage. The deep understanding they both possess goes above and beyond what I anticipated. However, in my opinion, this is what you need! They have the experience and expertise to navigate your legal and emotional needs to help you gain your life back and move forward positively. A solid Yes, choose Bert Barclay for your attorney.

Tichiena Tucker was my attorney 2020-2021. At first she was nice, but afterwards she was very unpleasant to work with. I was already dealing with a lot at the time, she would always down talk me, always gave me an attitude or smart remark to something I said. She literally made me cry 2 times after speaking with her because of how misunderstood I felt. I’m a young mother & I would ask her advise, she guided me in the wrong direction. I would listen to her & she set me up for failure. Please find lawyers that actually care & understand that you are human. Ms.tucker was very unpleasant to work with.

He is a good fighter, thorough when he is 'ON' but the rest of the time he lacks any ability to reach acceptable practices of an attorney. In any other field he would be fired. He doesn't call back, you have to use different phones to contact him because he has caller ID, so his firm doesn't answer calls, emails, etc. like any other legal racket he isn't a good call for domestic divorce/child custody. He comepletly drops the ball & leaves you financially/emotionally bankrupt. He had a slam dunk case my ex would have paid (if I were a female -the male would have paid - in this case he misrepresented me) Do your homework - interview everyone with good rating and really read their reviews. Only use him if you have LOTs of spare money. Nearly 80k in the whole & i don't see my kids ! My mistake ! Buyer beware!

Paid 3 x as much as next lawyer wanted. My case dragged on and he delegated the work to his junior associate that was not even a member of his law firm, someone he said "let her use a desk" in his office. He did NOT want to fight for me cause he was doing a pro bono case for casey a. guess i funded that at my expense.

His prefomance in court was horrible. He showed up to court completely unprepared. Then stuttered constantly while shuffling through his papers over and over again, didn't present any of the evidence well, didn't ask for anything that was previously discussed with the client, repeatedly asked the client the same pointless questions on stand, didn't fight for his client, and the list goes on. The GM kept scolding him, telling him he should know better. Just all around very disappointed seeing him in action. 0/10 would not recommend.

$10,500 later and all I got was the talking parents app. He talked me into an emergency motion. Which cost me an additional $5500. Didn’t fight for me. Left me on the stand for 3 hrs. And got me no where with the reason I hired him. $10,500. He will take money and not preform. Wasted my time and my money. What a shame of an attorney he is. What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
