I was referred to Burns & Jain and specifically Neil Burns through a lawyer who practiced a different type of law. From the first phone call with Neil, I felt comfortable in my choice. He made what had been a difficult time in our lives easier. He is hard working professional who makes himself and his team fully available to clients throughout the process at any time. The Burns & Jain team are a dedicated group of individuals who offer thorough explanation at each step of the legal process and through their kindness help you to feel comfortable and able to see the process through. My daughter and I were in a horrible head-on car accident, Neil and his team were able to help both of us navigate the legal channels and get insurance coverage maximized for us both. I would highly recommend the Burns & Jain team when you are seeking legal counsel.

Neil Burns was professional, knowledgeable, communicative & timely in helping us resolve a malpractice suit. We are extremely satisfied with the outcome, as it relates to a slip & fall accident. In addition, we felt that the lawyers were personable & caring about the individuals in our family! I would highly recommend this firm. Thank you for everything!! L. McManus

After almost 20 years of not having any status, I had the luck of finding Rachel L. Rado. Previously, I had bad luck finding any good and competent lawyers to take my case. I searched everywhere in the Boston area but because my case was difficult, many lawyers just didn't want to bother. This was not the case with Rachel. Not only did she fight vigorously for my case, she finished my case in just ONE YEAR. She's such an incredible lawyer, not even the lawyers I've consulted with in the past could be able to do this. Of course, above-excellent service; a very cordial and professional lawyer who will make sure to fight for your case—no matter the difficulty. Special thanks to Fernanda for also assisting us in our endeavors. If you want the job done, I would highly recommend Rachel L. Rado!

Marc did an outstanding job with my case. From the moment I met Marc, I knew I made the right decision to have him represent me. Marc kept it real with me the entire time, he never sugar-coated anything, which I respected so much. Most of all, Marc kept his promise and his word and for that, I'm FOREVER grateful!! THANK YOU so much Marc!!!

This review is for Marc Breakstone. I waited 2 years to post this review out of fear of retaliation. However, the truth needs to be spoken. I would unfortunately not recommend Marc to anyone due to the treatment I experienced by him as my lawyer. This is due to the following: 1. Marc took advantage of my helplessness/naivety as a newly injured and desperate victim by charging me a 50% lawyer's fee. The normal fee is 33%. Only after over 3 years of working together and being warned by many people about this fee being overpriced (even for the most difficult of cases), and only after repeated badgering on my part for those 3 years, did he lower the fee to 40% (still high). Accepting this fee was my own fault. But taking advantage of me was a choice he made himself. 2. I was not in control of my lawyer, he was in control of me. When I first hired Marc, he said to me verbatim, “I’ll be your lawyer, but you have to do everything I say. If I say jump, you say how high. Don’t ask questions, don’t talk back, etc.” Being unfamiliar with lawyers, and desperate for help, I thought this was normal, and agreed. I did not realize that lawyers are supposed to work for their clients, not the other way around. Due to this, he had me doing work he should have been doing himself or asking his secretary to do, like lightening images, reaching out to office case managers, etc. All of this as a disabled young woman trying to recover from a traumatic brain injury. He would sometimes ignore my emails or requests for information, shutting me down and ignoring what I saw to be crucial details of the case despite my objections, and refusing to communicate about them. 3. During the 4 total years we worked together, Marc regularly threatened me, cursed at me over the phone (including the F word, REGULARLY), and interrupted me when I spoke. For the most part, I feared receiving his phone calls, and finally after 3 years, I insisted that there be a few weeks where he only emailed me, so that our communications would be documented. At times he refused to let me see parts of my case file, like the defense's IME report. I had to look up public court records online for litigation deadlines due to his refusal to share these things. After 3 years I confronted him about all these things and to his credit, he backed off somewhat. However, he threatened to quit 2 weeks before my arbitration, making me feel cornered into doing what he wanted. 4. He did not know the details of my case as well as he should have. I had to correct him several times when he mixed up crucial details of my case with others, such as another girl with a history of migraines. If I had mistakenly been ascribed with a history of migraines, it could have derailed my entire TBI case. For the most part, I did not feel I was represented to the extent I could and should have been. All that to say, this was my experience working with Marc Breakstone. I have wondered many times whether I should report him to the Bar for the things I experienced. However, at this time, I am choosing to post this review in order to make the truth known and help me in my healing process as I move forward. Despite the things that occurred, I do choose to forgive Marc, hoping that he will use this review to treat others more respectfully in the future. EDIT: As I always try to show gratitude, I want to express that I am grateful I was able to have a lawyer advocate for 3 years when many people have no one to represent them. I did express my gratitude to Marc for representing me when we parted ways, as I believe in giving credit where it is due. I could have had no advocate at all. However, I believe that God's protection of me in this case was *despite* the wrongdoing that was done to me by Marc. I am not angry anymore, however, I would not recommend him as an advocate to another client unless there was major change on his part in regard to the things listed above.

Ron Gluck is one of those people you didn’t wish you had to know, but if you do arrive in the unfortunate place of needing his services, you are so glad you have him on your side. I lost my husband in a tragic pedestrian accident in 2022. I needed a lawyer for all the complicated legal work of getting the insurance payout from the driver. Once we talked, Ron recognized another liable party, as well. Ron sued and won the full settlements from both the driver’s insurance and the other liable party’s insurance as well. Ron is incredibly professional and skilled as a lawyer and got results that gave me financial peace-of-mind in raising my children. As a grieving widow, living out the worst possible nightmare, what moved me most was Ron’s compassion. Every single time we talked, his genuine kindness was first and foremost. He had to ask me to do some hard things for the case, but was always sensitive to the fact that it might be triggering. Above all, I found him to be on the same page with me for every step. He knew I didn’t want to go after the driver’s family (neither of us wanted to cause this driver more pain and angst) or pursue anything that would bring the driver to court. He never pushed me into being more aggressive than I wanted to be. While I was aware that a win for me was a win for him (and a loss meant that he didn’t get paid), I ALWAYS felt like he put my best interests at heart even if it meant a smaller paycheck for him. I’ve thought often that I hope I am never in a position to have to refer someone to a personal injury lawyer, but if I am, I would not hesitate to refer Ron with the highest praises.

Every year Boston magazine publishes the results for top attorneys in Boston from different legal specialties, from business and criminal law to family and employment law. If there are top 100 attorneys; Edward Wayland would be voted as the top 10 WORST attorneys in Boston. I recently had the privilege of being represented by Mr. Paul Hannaford in my asylum case, and I cannot speak highly enough of his professionalism, accuracy, and commitment to my case. From the moment I met him, I knew I was in capable hands. Paul Hannaford went above and beyond to ensure that my asylum application was meticulously prepared and well-documented. His attention to detail was nothing short of remarkable. This dedication to accuracy paid off in ways I couldn't have imagined. During the court proceedings, the judge commented on the exceptional quality of the documentation in my case. In fact, the judge specifically referred to my file as "well-documented." This was a pivotal moment in my case, and I firmly believe it played a significant role in the judge's decision to grant me asylum. Paul Hannaford not only possesses an exceptional understanding of immigration law, but he also knows how to present a case in the most compelling and persuasive manner. He left no stone unturned, and his thoroughness and professionalism were evident at every stage of my case. Mr. Paul Hannaford worked tirelessly to ensure our asylum case had the best possible chance of success, he provided clear and realistic assessments. His history of helping families navigate the complex immigration system speaks volumes and his professionalism and deep knowledge were evident, and his dedication was unwavering. Mr. Paul Hannaford combination of qualities makes him a standout immigration attorney. In short, Paul Hannaford is more than an attorney; he's a true advocate. I owe him a debt of gratitude for helping my family win our asylum case. His hard work, honesty, expertise, professionalism, and dedication set him apart. Thank you, Paul, for being our guiding light to a better future. Thanks to Paul Hannaford's expert guidance and dedication to my case, I am now a recipient of asylum in the United States. I cannot express how grateful I am for his support and legal expertise. I highly recommend Paul Hannaford to anyone seeking an attorney who goes the extra mile to ensure the best possible outcome.

I would like to share with everyone the extremely positive experience we had with Attorney Edward Wayland. We were "in the weeds" and getting "bullied" by opposing counsel. Edward just calmly and rationally cut through "the sideshow" intended to distract and turned the situation around 180 degrees. Most importantly Edward held to his integrity and achieved a "just" outcome. I am happy to speak with anyone directly as this is a real experience. You can contact Edward for my details.

Called for representation. Told lawyer what I thought about investigator. Glickman is friends with her so didn’t want the case. Not sure about you, but I wouldn’t want an attorney that prioritizes their relationship with the opposing side over a client. This is especially true when the other side lied in writing. But go for it. Maybe him being friends with the person destroying your life is what you want. Not me. I want an attorney who will call it out.

I was disappointed with the response time from this service and generic answer that they could not take the case. After submitting a form to be contacted on a Friday, I received a reply almost six days later. In contrast, when I reached out to another attorney via a form, I was contacted within ten minutes for intake. Later that day, I had a conversation with an attorney about my situation. Timeliness matters, and unfortunately, this service fell short.

I have spoken with quite a few lawyers in my career. Brian immediately impressed me of his no-nonsense-right-to-the-point style (I'm already not surprised by how lawyers like to talk nonsense). He's also very respectful of his client. And he appears to be very professional. He had thoroughly reviewed my material prior to our meeting and he did not charge time for his review. Overall experience was very good. I paid $140 for half-hour consultation and walked away feeling well informed. Definitely beat those lawyers who would charge $300 just to look at your stuff.

My husband and I were recommended to Moreno Law and Janeth Moreno and it was the best decision for us. Together, we highly recommend their immigration law firm. We sought them out to help with an adjustment of status, and over the course of a process that can be lengthy, Moreno Law was always responsive and available to answer our questions. Their support was essential throughout a complicated and often heavy process, and they consistently communicated new immigration policy changes that had the possibility of affecting our case. But most importantly, Moreno provided us with a the legal knowledge to help us feel more secure and prepared. Moreno gave attention and care to our case, and having her at our interview was invaluable. We highly recommend Moreno Law. It is also worth noting all of the community legal work Janeth Moreno does, and we continue to get her newsletter and applaud the firms accomplishments!

Definitely wouldn’t recommend. I had a slip and fall about 5 years ago… and just now got compensated, didn’t even get that much. In the time it took my injury suit closed out and settled, we went through an entire pandemic, I lost my father and my husband, I had a child, had a stroke, recovered from a stroke fully, was diagnosed with a heart condition and was no longer a minor. I still can’t believe how long it took. When I first called to start speaking with an attorney they said 12-18 months for payment and closure of the case. 5 YEARS later. Here we are. Wow. If you want a shark for an attorney who actually cares about you and your case, I don’t recommend Simon and Simon. Especially cause they took almost 2/3rds of my settlement money after I’ve been suffering for 5 years. Today, I spoke to a gentleman from Simon and Simon after they had reviewed my review. We were able to have a conversation and spoke about the issues I had put above. He did tell me that he would speak to a few people about a communication issue and try to have that resolved in hopes this would help people in the future using Simon and Simon. As I appreciate the call and conversation about the issues I spoke of, I do not feel as if this review is wrong. I have chosen to keep this review up because even though I had a discussion with a representative, my issues still happened. And I do believe that other people should be made aware and have the opportunity to see how others were treated. I appreciate your time today, however I will not be removing this review. Thank you.

There has been many mistakes with my cases which led to delays and remakes. They messed up my wife’s greencard application 5 times that I had to figure out the issues and correct it and submit it again(this costed us 9 months). One of the most annoying experience was when they messed up the DS-260 of my mother’s application which led her to not get visa after interview and delayed her 3 more months. It is best to stay away from them if you want avoid remakes and long delays.

I have hired her for my wife's green card adjustment. First consultation confirmation call was supposed to be done over the phone call. She was rude over call and kept telling me that i have an extreme language barrier. Then asked me to come in the office again and pay the consultation fee again. While we were in the consultation, she kept receiving her personal calls for the hour that we had paid twice for. Then she left the office twice. There is no paper work given when we paid at the same time she made fun of our accents. Then no response to our emails for days and we made phone calls and then asked again to send emails. My friend who suggested me the firm was given a different price for green card application for the spouse and was given a lower price. Our cases were exactly the same.

She first helped me on my H1B application with the premium processing. I got offered for this job in the very last minute (last week of March) but her office helped process everything so quickly and submitted my application on time. Again, in 2017, she helped me with the Green card application. Trupti and her staffs were very knowledgeable and on top of everything. They always kept us posted and proceeded everything in a timely manner. After 6-7 months, we got our green cards. This would not happen without her helps and hard work during the process. We could not thank you enough!

We had multiple legal issues to solve at the same time with a very short deadline (not even a week). Edward was travelling but still managed to take care of us, worked restlessly to make it work and thanks to him we have been able to file on time. He also spent time to help us find the right attorney for our other legal issue that was not related to immigration. He called lawyers on our behalf to ensure they will successfully take our case. We don’t know how we would have done without him, his dedication was incredible. I would recommend Edward with 0 limitations.

My wife is French and when we were getting ready to get married, we went through hell trying to figure out the best path forward to be able to live together in the same country. First we hired two French immigration lawyers. The first was rude and unhelpful over and over, so we ended up terminating our work with her. The second seemed at first like he'd be better, but ended up increasing his fee (considerably) twice due to our case becoming more complicated, and threatened to refuse to even send us our paperwork back if we didn't pay right away. So again we walked. The first US attorney we tried working with was friendly and meant well, but after our first consultation with him we went home and good old Google confirmed that his information was incomplete and out of date. Frustrated but determined to find a way, we finally found Edward. Phew!!! From the very first consultation with Edward, we knew we were in the best of hands. Edward was deeply knowledgeable, friendly, patient, and incredibly competent from the get-go. He asked a lot of questions, worked with us in depth to understand every little detail of our case, and was always one step ahead of the process, sending preparation paperwork in advance, checking in regularly to ensure we were staying on top of our preparations, and even offering multiple practice interviews for my wife who was a bit nervous about that part of the process. Twice during our process with Edward, the sale of our apartment in Paris fell through, and we had to change our plans and dates. Each time, based on our experiences with our other lawyers and our recognition that we were asking him to do a lot more work, we offered to increase the fee. He refused categorically, and continued to work with us competently and patiently through our 13 month process, helping us reschedule our interview twice. I'm writing now from California, where my wife, baby, and I have settled and are loving our life. We feel we owe this happiness to Edward in a more profound way than I could possibly express in this little box. There is simply too much to this saga to try to fit it all in, and too much was at stake to express how much Edward's solid work meant to us. For example, the part where my non-renewable tourist visa to stay with my wife in France expired the day before our baby's due date, meaning that if we didn't get the process just right, the potential outcome could have been literally catastrophic. I couldn't recommend Edward more strongly, and we look forward to staying in touch with him over the years, as well as working with him for our green card renewal, and any other needs we ever have in this realm.

My experience with Me Weiner has been just fabulous and, for the very first time, after several bad experiences, it really reconciled my thoughts for this profession. Here are already 6 points on which I am super satisfied: Attorney Weiner's understanding of your case and goals after your first consultation Communication with our firm throughout your case Attorney Weiner's legal advice and counseling Service and effectiveness of our firm Final Resolution of your case Reasonableness of our firm's fees I have really no negative message to tell about him and I hope everyone can live the experience I had with Me Weiner. My story: I'm French and Canadian and in Oct 2013, I had the bad experience to be refused at one USCIS office. I was forbidden to cross the US border because of a naive mistake I did then. After this I tried to fix my situation in Canada, my country. Unfortunately, I just met bad lawyers pretending they were American law experts, giving me wrong info, wanting to extort me some insane fees. After 5 yrs of being a ping pong ball, I never found satisfaction in Canada. I was really lost with these contradictory info I gathered so far. My patience and will to fix properly my issue finally got rewarded. I turned toward an American Attorney Who knows best the American rights than an American attorney ?! That was the wisest thing I did. I chose Me Weiner because he was a specialist in US immigration and he spoke also French, ma native language. It is already very tricky to understand the legal and technical jargon in French so have an entire communication in English would have been an nightmare for me as I wanted to understand fully my situation. Me Weiner and his assistant speak and write perfectly French and it was truly appreciated. I could have chose another American lawyer who spoke French as well but I chose Me Weiner because of these reasons - and even after reading the bad comment about him on this website on March 2014 - - 1st phone call to introduce my case, my fears and situation: free - very affordable fees compared to Canada - Transparent fees, clear WITHOUT mysterious new extra fees during or when we closed the case. - unlimited phone calls and emails but for me, the most important was the simplicity of communication with him. Me Weiner's always been clear. he took the time needed to understand my issue without counting the hours and he noticed points that no one noticed before. Yet these were just essential. Often, experts, whatever the field, use specific jargon and for a non expert person it can be very confusing. Me Weiner was very aware of this and used words everyone could understand, to make sure I was really understanding my file, the consequences, the possibilities. For the 1st time since 2013, to carry this burden and anxiousness with my wife, we were glad to feel that we were not alone anymore. I'm really VERY HAPPY of my experience with Me Weiner. He has been super efficient, noticed all the important facts, always attentive, very concerned to the details. Me Weiner knows perfectly his field of expertise but he knows very well how to communicate and so his assistant. Always very kind and polite to my wife and I. Always honest and clear in his words because the first he wanted for me was to solve my issue that has been following me for 5 years. It is the first time I felt in confidence and supported in a situation that caused many concern and stress to my wife and I and that seemed impossible to fix. The D-day came, Me Weiner adviced me one USCIS to show my file. One of his colleague lawyer close to that office was aware I was there in case I needed extra fast help during the interview. The file was just perfectly built. He prepared me for that event by mail and phone and finally after 30min at the border, I got the authorization to cross again the US border. I found back my liberty thanks to Me Weiner I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Me Weiner.

Seyfarth Shaw, the Attorney for the Marriott, is the worst Attorney that I have seen on record. Overbilling, lying to their client, costing their client $$$$, while they misrepresent, just attrocious behavior and an incompetant law firm. Trying to influence a Federal Judge after they have misfiled pleadings.

DO NOT USED THIS LAWYER! THIS LAW OFFICE HAS A LOT OF CLIENTS AND NO TIME FOR THOSE CLIENTS. THE STAFF ARE RUDE AND GIVE CONFLICTING INFORMATION/ MISINFORMATION. I APPLIED TWICE (AND PAID TWICE) TO APPLY FOR MY GREENCARD TOO EARLY BEFORE MY DATE AND THEY LIED ABOUT MAKING A MISTAKE. I LOST THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS. AS SOON AS I GOT A NEW LAWYER MY PROCESS WAS FAR EASIER AND I GOT MY GREENCARD.

This law office offered free consultation, this attracted me to make an appointment. I had made an appointment with Johanna herself 2 weeks in advance, when I got there she was out of the state and after taking a day off and a train to Boston I decided to see another attorney. I still had to wait 1 hr. in waiting room full of people with no appointments. I started explaining my case but she took the folder I brought in from my hands and stopped me from speaking. she proceeded to tell me what my case was and that my case was so complicates to resolve that it would take years and a lot of money to resolve almost assuring me solving my case was going to be a miracle. After 2 min she sent me to the finance girl who gave me a sticky note with how much money I needed to pay to retain and start process about 2k. not even a breakdown saying these are the steps and this is how much you have to pay for each step & related fees. I still had questions and the finance office girl had to pull the attorney into her office so I can get clarification on what the process was. I felt I was at the DMW, come in- get out! That place was so disorganized and overwhelming it was insane, I even saw the receptionist ignoring calls. Luckily, I had done some online research before appointment and knew my case was not as trivial as she wanted me to believe. They do these scare tactics to make up pay fast, so you are hooked with them. I consulted with a 2nd attorney who said your case is a 123 step process. This attorney actually gave me the same answer I saw online plenty of times from successful cases. after the consultation with 2nd attorney she said she would email me with a detail of our meeting. she sent me a step by step guide of how i was going to obtain my GC , how much I was going to pay for each stage and the USCIS fees related to each step. I was expected to pay about 12k total with this law office not sure what that was going towards. new layer charged me 5k total and I know exactly when that has to get paid based on the movement of my case.

Used their services and my work visa was rejected. After the rejection I consulted 3 other lawyers who all told me the same thing, they would never have applied for a work visa in the same manner as Dyann, and they were all shocked. And they all said, had I applied for a work visa differently I would probably have been accepted. Also, they claim to have many years of experience, but when I iterated some of the things they claimed to other lawyers, these lawyers told me they never heard of such claims. It was the worst experience ever. And I highly advise to not use their services.

Me and my mother, we went for a rather complex story involving immigration law, criminal law and a restraining order against my wife and the three very minor boys. Linda took a $200 check in order to hear our story. I told her she was recommended to me by another attorney. Her reply was: "Oh little Craig. Hmm OK he cant really say that we know each other well enough to recommend customers but ok he is an acceptable law practitioner. Not a very bad guy." From the beginning I felt like I was talking to a prosecutor and not to a representative of the defense. When she heard that I have already been represented by other attorney and I looked to a better option she replied: "I just had a dinner with Susan yesterday. She is a good friend of mine. You should go back to her." Yet she still kept listening to our story. Then when I tried to explain her I got court hearing for the restraining order on 11/12 and on 12/11 for the criminal case she got literally furious. She started yelling, shouting, mocking and talking with extreme aggression against me and my non English speaking mother. She said: "Are you mocking me! When is your court at November 12th or at December 11th?" Then when I replied "Both days I have court hearing. November 12th for the restraining order and on December 12th for the 'criminal' case." She erupted like a volcano swearing to me and my mother, took the paycheck and tore it apart in pieces in front of us saying I do not need your money, take your $200 back and get lost out of here and then she called her secretary-trainee guy to literally kick us out of the office. It was God's mercy that my mother did not have a heart attack at this moment. We went out to have a fresh air around the aquarium and we were lucky that the weather was good and sunny although it was November so that my mother could recover and did not end up in the hospital!

What an Immigration Lawyer Can Do for You

An immigration lawyer specializes in helping individuals, families, and businesses navigate the complex immigration process. These lawyers provide legal guidance on various immigration matters, such as obtaining visas, gaining permanent residency (green cards), applying for citizenship, and defending clients in deportation or removal proceedings. Immigration lawyers also assist with employment-based immigration, asylum applications, and resolving issues related to visas or immigration status.

Whether you're trying to immigrate to the U.S., facing deportation, or sponsoring an employee or family member for a visa, an immigration lawyer can help you understand your legal options and navigate the often complicated legal system.

When Should I Hire an Immigration Lawyer?

Hiring an immigration lawyer is beneficial in many situations where you are dealing with U.S. immigration laws, whether for personal or business reasons. Common reasons to hire an immigration lawyer include:

  • Visa applications: If you need assistance applying for a visa, whether it's a work visa (H-1B), student visa (F-1), or tourist visa (B-1/B-2), a lawyer can help ensure the application is properly completed and submitted.
  • Green card applications: If you're seeking permanent residency, an immigration lawyer can guide you through the process, whether through family sponsorship, employment, or the Diversity Visa (lottery) program.
  • Deportation or removal defense: If you’re facing deportation or removal from the U.S., a lawyer can defend your case in immigration court and seek to prevent removal.
  • Asylum applications: If you’re seeking asylum due to persecution or fear of persecution in your home country, a lawyer can help you prepare a strong case and file for asylum.
  • Family reunification: If you're a U.S. citizen or permanent resident looking to bring family members to the U.S., a lawyer can assist with the family sponsorship process.
  • Citizenship and naturalization: If you're ready to apply for U.S. citizenship, a lawyer can help you navigate the naturalization process and ensure you meet all the requirements.
  • Business immigration: If you're an employer seeking to hire foreign workers, a lawyer can assist with employment-based visas, labor certification, and compliance with immigration regulations.
  • Special immigration categories: Immigration lawyers also handle complex cases, such as visas for victims of human trafficking (T visa), crime victims (U visa), or those seeking Temporary Protected Status (TPS).

Hiring an immigration lawyer early in the process can help you avoid delays, errors, and possible denials due to incomplete or incorrect applications.

What Does an Immigration Lawyer Do?

An immigration lawyer provides a wide range of services to help clients with their immigration needs, whether personal or business-related. Their tasks often include:

  • Assisting with visa applications: Helping clients fill out and submit visa applications, ensuring all documentation is complete and accurate.
  • Filing for green cards and permanent residency: Guiding clients through the process of applying for a green card, including family-based, employment-based, or other forms of residency.
  • Defending against deportation or removal: Representing clients in immigration court who are facing deportation and working to prevent removal from the U.S.
  • Preparing asylum cases: Assisting clients in applying for asylum based on fear of persecution in their home country due to race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group.
  • Handling citizenship applications: Helping lawful permanent residents apply for naturalization and ensuring they meet all the legal requirements for U.S. citizenship.
  • Employment-based immigration: Assisting employers with the process of sponsoring foreign workers for temporary or permanent visas, including H-1B, L-1, and EB-1 through EB-5 visas.
  • Representation in immigration interviews: Preparing clients for immigration interviews and attending interviews at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) offices.
  • Appealing denied applications: If a visa, green card, or citizenship application is denied, a lawyer can file appeals or motions to reopen or reconsider the case.

How Are Immigration Lawyers Paid?

Immigration lawyers generally charge for their services based on the type of immigration case and the complexity of the legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: Many immigration lawyers charge a flat fee for specific services, such as preparing a visa application, green card petition, or citizenship application. Flat fees help clients know upfront what the legal costs will be for a particular service.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex cases, such as deportation defense or appeals, some lawyers charge by the hour. Hourly rates vary depending on the lawyer's experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Retainer: For ongoing immigration matters, some clients may need to pay a retainer, which is an upfront payment billed against as the lawyer works on the case.
  • Pro bono or sliding scale: Some immigration lawyers or nonprofit organizations may offer free or low-cost services for clients with limited financial means, particularly in asylum or humanitarian cases.

It’s essential to discuss the fee structure with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand the costs and payment arrangements.

How Much Does an Immigration Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an immigration lawyer varies based on the type of legal service required, the lawyer's experience, and the complexity of the case. General cost estimates include:

  • Visa applications: For help with visa applications (e.g., H-1B, L-1, F-1), legal fees may range from $2,000 to $7,500, depending on the complexity and the type of visa.
  • Green card applications: Fees for family-based or employment-based green card applications typically range from $3,000 to $10,000, depending on the case.
  • Deportation defense: For defending clients in removal proceedings, costs can range from $5,000 to $15,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the case and how long the case takes.
  • Asylum cases: Asylum applications may range from $2,000 to $10,000, depending on whether the case is defensive (in removal proceedings) or affirmative (not in removal proceedings).
  • Citizenship applications: Legal fees for filing a naturalization application usually range from $1,500 to $5,000, depending on the complexity of the client’s immigration history.
  • Business immigration services: Fees for assisting businesses with employment-based visas (such as H-1B or EB-5 visas) often range from $3,000 to $10,000 or more.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of costs and fee arrangements before proceeding with legal services.

Top Questions to Ask an Immigration Lawyer

Before hiring an immigration lawyer, it's essential to ask questions to ensure they have the experience and expertise to handle your case effectively. Important questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with immigration cases like mine?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it’s family-based immigration, employment visas, or asylum.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a flat fee, hourly rate, or retainer, and ask for a detailed estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case and the potential outcomes, including any challenges you might face.
  4. How long will the process take?
Immigration cases can take time, so ask how long it may take to process your application or resolve your legal issue.
  5. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may handle parts of your case. Make sure you know who will be working on your case directly.
  6. What documents do I need to provide?
Ask the lawyer about the documentation required to support your case, such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, or employment contracts.

How to Check the Credibility of an Immigration Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable immigration lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Check their state bar status: Confirm with your state bar association that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for specific immigration law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in immigration law and have experience handling cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their ability to handle immigration cases.
  • Check for industry affiliations: Membership in organizations like the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) can indicate the lawyer’s expertise and commitment to immigration law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with an immigration lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Passport and immigration documents: Bring your passport, visa, and any documents related to your current immigration status.
  • Family documents: If you're applying for a family-based visa or green card, bring marriage certificates, birth certificates, and proof of family relationships.
  • Employment information: For employment-based visas, provide your employment contract, offer letter, or other documentation of your job.
  • Criminal records (if applicable): If you have any criminal history, bring copies of court records and other relevant documents.
  • Timeline of events: Provide a clear timeline of any prior immigration applications, visas, or issues with immigration authorities.
  • List of questions: Prepare any questions you have about your immigration case, the process, costs, and the likelihood of success.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer understand your case more effectively and get the best possible legal advice on how to proceed.
