I wish to tell, as briefly as possible, my story about the way Mr. Donald Garner helped me acquire my United States citizenship. Many ears ago I came to the US on a J-1 visa (cultural exchange) and met my future and present husband. We married while I was on J-1 and soon after graduation I went back to my country to discharge the two-year home country duty. Upon my return, I initiated an application for the US residency based on a marriage to a US citizen. And this is when my troubles began. My papers had been lost twice in the US Immigration and Naturalization Service, INS (as it was called then). Any time that happened I had to go back in line and wait as if applying for the first time. It took about 5 years to become permanent resident. Then, I applied for the US citizenship and that process took a number of years. I hoped, that my daughter from my previous marriage who lived with us in the US will become a US citizen based on my citizenship. It had to happen, though, before her 18th birthday. When I began applying for my legal status she was 11. By the time my citizenship application slowly moved though the INS offices she was getting close to 18! Do the math yourselves… Then I approached Don Garner, a young lawyer out of University of Illinois College of Law. He immediately took the matters in his hands, got in touch with INS officers and expedited the interview at the INS in Chicago. Soon after, my citizenship was granted. But then, the issue of taking an oath in front of a US judge had to be addressed, too. The next naturalization oath ceremony was going to be called in three or four months. By then my daughter was going to turn 18 and be disqualified from gaining a citizenship as an underage child of a citizen. Again, Mr. Garner stepped in and intervened directly reaching to the federal judge's office, advocating on my behalf and arranging a private ceremony for me. After the naturalization ceremony he continued working on getting my daughter's legal papers in order, which was part of the process and could also go on for months. So, she celebrated her 18th birthday as a new US citizen only thanks to Don Garner's swift and decisive actions in discharging his legal duties. He showed himself to be a well-qualified, responsible and caring immigration attorney. Thank you, Don Garner!

Don was our Immigration lawyer for more than 15 years. He helped my husband and I to process our Green cards and then -when we have waited the required time to get our Citizenship, we started the process with his help. For people who have no idea as to how long it takes to become a US Citizen -fifteen years may seem not much, but it is! We were very pleased with Don's services as he always followed up with everything whether if it was a phone call or an email. Don was always very attentive. We're glad we hired him as he was very understanding of our process needs and requirements. We are now two proud US citizens. Thank you Don! Maribel

Wasted two years with him. Don Garner and his assistant Karen Davalle are who I hired to assist in getting my wife into the USA. Told me to provide a truck load of documents. Eighteen months later he said he never received it. I proved to him he did and then told me that the application has completely changed. Then told me he got sick and would pass my case on to other lawyers. Then he couldn't find any lawyers and he would do it himself. I had been receiving an email for three months saying he had only five more hours to work on the application. I pressed him to finish the application and I received an email with him resigning three weeks later. He mailed back the submitted paperwork and refunded the deposit. No partial application or any indication that any work that was done was returned to me. It's as if he pretended to be a lawyer.

Ira was extremely helpful with my divorce and quick to get everything needed done. I was moving out of state as I hired him and he made it extremely easy for me to get all the documents signed and filed correctly. Ira and I had constant communication. Give him a try as he made a difficult time way less stressful.

All because, of an earlier failed attempt, thanks to an Arizona based Immigration Lawyer and his foreign (Indian Cahoot) half-baked lawyer who had completely botched up my petition when I arrived in the US in Summer of 2008 on Visitors Visa , I was a dejected and a failed man. Armed with a solid reference I walk into Ira's office with my earlier rejected/refused foreign immigrant-workers petition in absolutely hopeless situation only to walk out of his office a couple of hours later feeling completely charged up and with more than just glimmer of hope. It has been three years since and thanks to Ira and his team of professionals , I am on the threshold of getting the proverbial Green Card. His team of professional legals and para-legals made this entire task a breeze. They are completely committed to delivering positive results and fully motivated in helping you every turn of the way. Unlike, most Attorneys who slip some charges unnoticed into your invoice the Azulay Seiden Law Group is very transparent in their dealings and you can pre negotiate an agreed upon bulk amount for your entire case. I will use them again and again and again whenever required and I highly, recommend them to anyone who has been bitten stung by their earlier negative experiences by some other operatives.

I am incredibly grateful for the professionalism and guidance provided by Mr. Mark Davidson during my asylum case. From the very beginning, he was always responsive, addressing all my inquiries promptly and thoroughly. His attention to detail and accuracy in providing information were invaluable throughout my journey. Mr. Davidson's dedication to my case was evident in the way he meticulously prepared and presented professional and precise evidence. He consistently encouraged me and ensured that I felt supported every step of the way. I highly recommend Mr. Davidson for anyone in need of legal assistance. I wish Google would let you leave zero or negative stars. Please please please for the love of God read and pay attention to these reviews!!! I didn’t, and it backfired terribly. This place is a total scam. I was charged nearly 10k for them to do absolutely NOTHING in my case. Ultimately they dropped me as a client (which was fine), I knew very early on I wanted to fire my attorney as it was evident she didn’t know what she was doing. she had no sympathy for my situation. She just kept running up the bill. There are other well known firms to consider. It may seem like they charge more but these people will take EVERYTHING from you and do nothing in return. I’m fighting a child support/ custody case and she wanted me to settle for next to nothing. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY HERE!!!!

Mary Sump recently represented me in a Family Law case. I engaged her as my attorney because I received great feedback from a friend that she had represented. Working with Mary, I found her to be very professional, ethical and extremely knowledgeable of the law as it applied to my situation. She took time to understand the facts of my case; thoroughly explained my options; proposed strategies and then executed those strategies flawlessly in court. Also, Mary responded to all of my emails and phone call on a timely basis and I always felt like I was her only client. Finally, I had Mary establish my Trust, Living Will and Power of Attorney documents. She did an excellent job. She really got to know me my financial goals and was able to structure these documents to protect my Estate. Finally, and most importantly, Mary did her best to minimize the amount of fees that I had to pay. I know that I received the best value for the services that she provided. I personally think that Mary is one of the BEST attorneys in McHenry County and Bruning and Associates are fortunate to have her on their team!

Afshan J. Khan seemed well-spoken and kind in the beginning but after the check was deposited, I never really heard from her again. She barely did the initial immigration filing and had me go on the site myself to do most of it. And afterwards, none of the follow-up's did she let me know what to do or even respond to me. She never returned to calls and emails or if she did respond, she would just push things out saying she was traveling to NYC or something else due to the pandemic. And of course, she would never follow up. I truly regret it.

I would like to share my experience at Afshan Khan’s office. Afshan is one of the best attorneys I know; she is knowledgeable, passionate about the work she does, and sincere, I trusted her the moment I met her. She is very hard working, during the process I could see her in ridiculously short notices, sometimes even on the weekends, days or evenings, she was always there for me. Her highest level of professionalism and diligence helped me get my family to the States on F2A visa. Afshan always stayed on top of the case, constantly inquiring with NVC so the processing would be done in shortest amount of time and stayed in touch with me throughout the process of the application. Our family is extremely grateful for the work Afshan did and we wish her best!!

Greenwich is a top notch firm to do business with-end of. Jessica, Alison and their team were extremely professional, knowledgeable and courteous when recently guiding us through the minefield that is estate planning. They made it very simple and easy to understand things. Moreover, they have adapted their process to accommodate for Covid so we did the signing remotely meaning less time out of our day. I cannot recommend them highly enough-if it's estate planning you're looking for, Greenwich should be your first choice.

Another unhappy "client" here. I was in an accident at the end of January and spoke with Martinkus. He seemed to care about my case and assured me that he would help me. Fast forward to SEPTEMBER and I still have no information. I have never had any kind of legal dealings, so I was unsure what to expect with time frames. I have had to email or call multiple times for anyone to even get back to me. Should have been a quick case...I was hit by a drunk driver with insurance. This has just been an absolute nightmare. I wish I would have spoken to another law firm, but I feel it is too late at this point. 😞

Victims of domestic violence/people who are against domestic violence DO NOT hire this person. She WILL side with your abuser. I was assaulted in front of my baby and finally got the courage to protect me and my kids. My daughter has nightmares about what he did and wakes up in the night crying. Instead of allowing us to be protected Anne stripped us of almost all protection and sided with my abuser. She on top of that is having my kids go to school down the street from where he assaulted me. My 2 year old has already reported that he hits her on her tummy when he’s angry, of course because of Anne martinkus I no longer can protect them from him. Genuinely destroyed our lives in one day and should be fired imo. Also she did a lazy Investigation and just a bad job in general. If you care about your kids and families safety stay far away from Anne. Every other person who I was working with was shocked and disgusted including my lawyer.

I had the opportunity to hire Matthew Katz and his team a few years back. I went to meet with him at his office with a legal matter that I was not sure how to handle. Turned out that Matthew not only provided me with peace of mind in the short term but also found an answer to my legal situation. After reviewing the terms and conditions to hire his firm, I felt comfortable working with him and his team so I hired them. I ended up with a great outcome as Katz Law provided me with great counsel that allowed me to resolve my legal matter in a very efficient way. I will start off by saying that I chose this lawyer because I thought he was trustworthy since he helped someone I know get their green card. The initial consultation went well and he said I was good to go with the process. This was in July of 2019 that I signed the contract with him. They took months to send the first application which a friend of mine who is a paralegal said those applications do not take that long to prepare. Immigration approved the application about 4 months after they sent it last year in 2020. After that the next part of the process was next, the I601A application which they kept telling me was almost ready for like 7 months even took the NVC fee and it turns out the paralegal that was preparing my application didn’t work there anymore so my application wasn’t even finished after like 7-8 months. In February of 2021 he said he finally sent it and had me zelle him the $715 fee for the application. I have yet to receive the receipt & I called the USCIS to check what’s going on & they said they could not find anything in the system but that my lawyer should have a tracking number for the application so my wife called his office and they said they did not have a tracking number for it which is super sketchy. Though immigration is taking longer to send out receipts it’s been almost 90 days since he supposedly sent it and I’ve heard that’s way too long. At this point I’ve lost all credibility on him and highly doubt he sent my application. Took my $8,000 and now I’m left in limbo almost 2 years after starting the whole process .

I'll start the review off by saying that with all of the hassles that he put my wife and I through, the final immigration decision ended on a positive note (Green Card received) and that's the only reason I'm giving him 2 stars. With that being said, his general unprofessional behavior is what prompted me to write this review. I've outlined a few instances below: 1. Late 30 minutes during the initial consultation 2. Never informed us of paralegal's departure in the middle of our case (our main point of contact) 3. Verbally abused via email (He accidentally included me on an email to the Law firm that contracted his services and "bad-mouthed" me) 4. Green card application incomplete - His firm omitted crucial evidence that supported my marriage (pictures and a lease). 5. Unprepared during final green card interview - When getting probed by the Visa official, he indicated that I was a student (which I was not). This led to further confusion that I had to address with the Visa official. I have more examples of his poor handling of my case, but based on the money that was spent to retain his services I would not recommend Jesus. I am happy to provide more context to anyone who needs it along with proof, so please don't hesitate to reach out. Thanks

I turned to Jackson because he was the most inexpensive lawyer. I should’ve done my research. Basically you get what you pay for. I’m sure some of you have really good experiences with this man, but I did not. He is not professional, he doesn’t listen, and he doesn’t know how to communicate. I also informed him my SSN was stolen for employment purposes. He told me it shouldn’t be a problem. I asked him if he was sure because it’s showing a lot more money that I’m making then I’m not. I’m not a bankruptcy lawyer but I’m pretty sure that this is a very important situation. Finally after so many miscommunications he tells me he can’t handle my case. Surprise surprise. When he told me he can’t have me as a client anymore, I was short with him, but I had very good reasons. He called me back to yell at me. Who does that? I can’t wait to see what he’s going to post after this review.Oh and I don’t wanna hear about your wife’s heart attack. I’m sorry that happened to you but I also fractured my fibula. I’m not here to compare tragedies or listen to excuses.

Arrived on a Monday for the office hours of 10 to 4, no one at the office. Called left a message when would they be in. I believe I called three times between the hours of 10:30 and 1:30. Wanted to get our filing started. Called back to see if anyone would be in the office the following day because I wasn’t going to make another trip out to that side of town. Was informed that he did not want to take our case. Has no interest in representation other than to take your money, seems like a low life.

One of the worst human beings I have ever met. Please avoid his services at all costs! He will charge you an arm and leg but will do absolutely nothing on your case. We paid him close to $3,000 to type up information we gave him and send it MONTHS after it was supposed to be turned in. He would never answer any emails to keep us posted on the progress of our case and only decided to schedule a meeting once I told him I was going to report him to the bar. He changed his tune really quickly after that. After our meeting, and after warning us that we would not get any of our money back if we went with someone else's services (this was my mistake for paying him the total amount up front), we decided the only thing to do was to give him another try. Fast forward to another few of months of inactivity, my new lawyer had to warn him (AGAIN) about reporting him to the bar association before he sent material I had been asking him for months.AVOID AVOID AVOID!!!

Spoke to Pam. She took no steps in even wanting to understand the situation before telling me within 45 seconds of the phone conversation that she needs $500 to have a 10 minute phone conversation about our situation. I just needed to know if it’s a case their firm would take or not, but apparently you have to pay these guys $500 to get a no for an answer.

My employer hired Cyrus for processing my H1 visa and green card applications. He has been very professional in handling my case and is always available to guide me through the process. He understands the process well and made sure he answered all my concerns in a timely manner and kept me in the loop throughout the process.

I had little experience in the process for our employees to obtain H1B Status as well as Green Card Status. Cyrus did a very good job with all of this and timeliness of filing as well. Never once did we receive something back from USCIS with a clarification and so far the employees we sent his way to assist us has been great! For our needs, Cyrus did a great job.

I made an agreement with him for a flat rate fee to review documents and aid in 'everything related to the process' for a spouse related visa. At an arbitrary point he said that my directly-related questions were not in the purview of our contract and that I would now need to pay his hourly rate. My questions were, and always were, directly related to the process. In addition, he ill-advised us on which forms to submit and also said we didn't need to do a medical exam, thus delaying the immigration process. Even the immigration officer laughed at these rookie errors. I would strongly recommend you do not use him for immigration-related issues. If you for some reason decide to do so, definitely get him to spell out exactly what his flat rate covers.

From the first day that we met, Mr. Azulay, inspired trust, confidence, and peace of mind about my situation. He always responded promptly to my questions and was truly clear about all aspects of the application process. I was blown away by how smoothly and swiftly the application was processed, thanks to Mr.Azulay’s clarity and guidance. I could not imagine a better experience and am so grateful to Mr. Azulay and his entire team, for taking what I imagined to be a near-impossible situation and making it manageable, successful, and completely affordable. Thank you !

He was my families immigration lawyer for years. He kept taking money and more money. After years and years of trying we only got a work permit for a year. After that he couldn't get me approved for anything else then I had the deportation notice on my hands. I now find myself as a refugee from the war stricken country i was deported to.

She did help me renew my work permit. I got into a criminal arrest that I was scared to renew because of it. She helped me realize it was nothing to worry about because I was not convicted. She's a decent lawyer just not too friendly at times.

I hired Helen Lesczynski to help me receive my child support payments that had already been court ordered. Helen told me that I had court on June 14, 2013 for this matter, and I in fact did not. She never filed anything and didn't show up to the courthouse!!!!! I took the day off of work for nothing! I'm so glad I didn't hire her for a traffic or criminal matter!

My husband and I went to a lawyer Helen Lesczynski in January 2013 to get his immigration papers, and we did everything asked of us immediately. We even paid in full! Just to find out today June 12, 2013 that not a single application has been filed. We are $4000.00 into this and he should have a work permit. Helen Lesczynski has told me that our first application was approved and that she has the receipt. Her compulsive lying and other things made me suspect that perhaps she was lying about that too, so I called her boss and sure she has not done a thing for us!!!! My $420 money order that she supposedly sent to INS is still sitting in our folder!!! Please DO NOT go to this lying woman!

When we called for a meeting regarding my case, we were told to wait and that we would get a call back from him. However, he never returned our calls or emails even when it was an emergency. On the day of my court day, he didn't show up. If you are looking for a good lawyer he isn't the one.

What an Immigration Lawyer Can Do for You

An immigration lawyer specializes in helping individuals, families, and businesses navigate the complex immigration process. These lawyers provide legal guidance on various immigration matters, such as obtaining visas, gaining permanent residency (green cards), applying for citizenship, and defending clients in deportation or removal proceedings. Immigration lawyers also assist with employment-based immigration, asylum applications, and resolving issues related to visas or immigration status.

Whether you're trying to immigrate to the U.S., facing deportation, or sponsoring an employee or family member for a visa, an immigration lawyer can help you understand your legal options and navigate the often complicated legal system.

When Should I Hire an Immigration Lawyer?

Hiring an immigration lawyer is beneficial in many situations where you are dealing with U.S. immigration laws, whether for personal or business reasons. Common reasons to hire an immigration lawyer include:

  • Visa applications: If you need assistance applying for a visa, whether it's a work visa (H-1B), student visa (F-1), or tourist visa (B-1/B-2), a lawyer can help ensure the application is properly completed and submitted.
  • Green card applications: If you're seeking permanent residency, an immigration lawyer can guide you through the process, whether through family sponsorship, employment, or the Diversity Visa (lottery) program.
  • Deportation or removal defense: If you’re facing deportation or removal from the U.S., a lawyer can defend your case in immigration court and seek to prevent removal.
  • Asylum applications: If you’re seeking asylum due to persecution or fear of persecution in your home country, a lawyer can help you prepare a strong case and file for asylum.
  • Family reunification: If you're a U.S. citizen or permanent resident looking to bring family members to the U.S., a lawyer can assist with the family sponsorship process.
  • Citizenship and naturalization: If you're ready to apply for U.S. citizenship, a lawyer can help you navigate the naturalization process and ensure you meet all the requirements.
  • Business immigration: If you're an employer seeking to hire foreign workers, a lawyer can assist with employment-based visas, labor certification, and compliance with immigration regulations.
  • Special immigration categories: Immigration lawyers also handle complex cases, such as visas for victims of human trafficking (T visa), crime victims (U visa), or those seeking Temporary Protected Status (TPS).

Hiring an immigration lawyer early in the process can help you avoid delays, errors, and possible denials due to incomplete or incorrect applications.

What Does an Immigration Lawyer Do?

An immigration lawyer provides a wide range of services to help clients with their immigration needs, whether personal or business-related. Their tasks often include:

  • Assisting with visa applications: Helping clients fill out and submit visa applications, ensuring all documentation is complete and accurate.
  • Filing for green cards and permanent residency: Guiding clients through the process of applying for a green card, including family-based, employment-based, or other forms of residency.
  • Defending against deportation or removal: Representing clients in immigration court who are facing deportation and working to prevent removal from the U.S.
  • Preparing asylum cases: Assisting clients in applying for asylum based on fear of persecution in their home country due to race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group.
  • Handling citizenship applications: Helping lawful permanent residents apply for naturalization and ensuring they meet all the legal requirements for U.S. citizenship.
  • Employment-based immigration: Assisting employers with the process of sponsoring foreign workers for temporary or permanent visas, including H-1B, L-1, and EB-1 through EB-5 visas.
  • Representation in immigration interviews: Preparing clients for immigration interviews and attending interviews at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) offices.
  • Appealing denied applications: If a visa, green card, or citizenship application is denied, a lawyer can file appeals or motions to reopen or reconsider the case.

How Are Immigration Lawyers Paid?

Immigration lawyers generally charge for their services based on the type of immigration case and the complexity of the legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: Many immigration lawyers charge a flat fee for specific services, such as preparing a visa application, green card petition, or citizenship application. Flat fees help clients know upfront what the legal costs will be for a particular service.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex cases, such as deportation defense or appeals, some lawyers charge by the hour. Hourly rates vary depending on the lawyer's experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Retainer: For ongoing immigration matters, some clients may need to pay a retainer, which is an upfront payment billed against as the lawyer works on the case.
  • Pro bono or sliding scale: Some immigration lawyers or nonprofit organizations may offer free or low-cost services for clients with limited financial means, particularly in asylum or humanitarian cases.

It’s essential to discuss the fee structure with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand the costs and payment arrangements.

How Much Does an Immigration Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an immigration lawyer varies based on the type of legal service required, the lawyer's experience, and the complexity of the case. General cost estimates include:

  • Visa applications: For help with visa applications (e.g., H-1B, L-1, F-1), legal fees may range from $2,000 to $7,500, depending on the complexity and the type of visa.
  • Green card applications: Fees for family-based or employment-based green card applications typically range from $3,000 to $10,000, depending on the case.
  • Deportation defense: For defending clients in removal proceedings, costs can range from $5,000 to $15,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the case and how long the case takes.
  • Asylum cases: Asylum applications may range from $2,000 to $10,000, depending on whether the case is defensive (in removal proceedings) or affirmative (not in removal proceedings).
  • Citizenship applications: Legal fees for filing a naturalization application usually range from $1,500 to $5,000, depending on the complexity of the client’s immigration history.
  • Business immigration services: Fees for assisting businesses with employment-based visas (such as H-1B or EB-5 visas) often range from $3,000 to $10,000 or more.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of costs and fee arrangements before proceeding with legal services.

Top Questions to Ask an Immigration Lawyer

Before hiring an immigration lawyer, it's essential to ask questions to ensure they have the experience and expertise to handle your case effectively. Important questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with immigration cases like mine?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it’s family-based immigration, employment visas, or asylum.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a flat fee, hourly rate, or retainer, and ask for a detailed estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case and the potential outcomes, including any challenges you might face.
  4. How long will the process take?
Immigration cases can take time, so ask how long it may take to process your application or resolve your legal issue.
  5. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may handle parts of your case. Make sure you know who will be working on your case directly.
  6. What documents do I need to provide?
Ask the lawyer about the documentation required to support your case, such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, or employment contracts.

How to Check the Credibility of an Immigration Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable immigration lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Check their state bar status: Confirm with your state bar association that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for specific immigration law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in immigration law and have experience handling cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their ability to handle immigration cases.
  • Check for industry affiliations: Membership in organizations like the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) can indicate the lawyer’s expertise and commitment to immigration law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with an immigration lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Passport and immigration documents: Bring your passport, visa, and any documents related to your current immigration status.
  • Family documents: If you're applying for a family-based visa or green card, bring marriage certificates, birth certificates, and proof of family relationships.
  • Employment information: For employment-based visas, provide your employment contract, offer letter, or other documentation of your job.
  • Criminal records (if applicable): If you have any criminal history, bring copies of court records and other relevant documents.
  • Timeline of events: Provide a clear timeline of any prior immigration applications, visas, or issues with immigration authorities.
  • List of questions: Prepare any questions you have about your immigration case, the process, costs, and the likelihood of success.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer understand your case more effectively and get the best possible legal advice on how to proceed.
