I had the privilege of working with Mr. Bruce Raphael as my personal lawyer on a recent court case, and I must say that the experience was nothing short of amazing. Mr. Raphael's intelligence, resourcefulness, and professionalism were simply outstanding. From the very first meeting, it was evident that I was in the hands of an extremely smart and powerful legal expert. He exudes confidence and knowledge, much like Harvey Specter from the TV show "The Suite." Mr. Raphael's ability to navigate the complexities of my case was nothing short of impressive, just like Harvey Specter's prowess in the legal world. What sets Mr. Raphael apart is not just his legal acumen, but also his friendly and respectful demeanor. He was not only a brilliant attorney but also a personable and approachable professional who truly cared about my well-being. He went above and beyond to ensure that I felt comfortable and informed throughout the legal process. Furthermore, Mr. Raphael's reputation in the legal community is impeccable. He is highly respected and admired for his expertise, just like Harvey Specter is on the TV show. Mr. Raphael's dedication to his clients and his commitment to upholding the law make him a force to be reckoned with in the legal world. In summary, my experience with Mr. Bruce Raphael was not just satisfactory; it was exceptional. His intelligence, resourcefulness, friendliness, and professionalism make him the Harvey Specter of the legal world. I am extremely grateful for his guidance and support throughout my case, and I highly recommend his services to anyone seeking a powerful, intelligent, and passionate attorney. Thank you, Mr. Raphael, for your outstanding representation and unwavering dedication to justice. Widly J Timoleon III

Every year Boston magazine publishes the results for top attorneys in Boston from different legal specialties, from business and criminal law to family and employment law. If there are top 100 attorneys; Edward Wayland would be voted as the top 10 WORST attorneys in Boston. I'm very grateful I had made the right decision to terminate him for ineffectiveness of his counsel. About few years ago, To today's day, I never regretted (terminating) firing Edward Wayland. He almost ruined my life and my freedom. lack of communication, Failure to exercise diligence, ineffectiveness of his counsel, and Incompetence, Incompetence, and Incompetence. I'm in the process of filing a complaint against him to the Massachusetts Board of Bar Overseer; Attorney and Consumer Assistance Program (ACAP), I think he should get his license suspended or revoked. (everything I stated here is true except for the top 10 worst attorneys).

I would like to share with everyone the extremely positive experience we had with Attorney Edward Wayland. We were "in the weeds" and getting "bullied" by opposing counsel. Edward just calmly and rationally cut through "the sideshow" intended to distract and turned the situation around 180 degrees. Most importantly Edward held to his integrity and achieved a "just" outcome. I am happy to speak with anyone directly as this is a real experience. You can contact Edward for my details.

My husband and I were recommended to Moreno Law and Janeth Moreno and it was the best decision for us. Together, we highly recommend their immigration law firm. We sought them out to help with an adjustment of status, and over the course of a process that can be lengthy, Moreno Law was always responsive and available to answer our questions. Their support was essential throughout a complicated and often heavy process, and they consistently communicated new immigration policy changes that had the possibility of affecting our case. But most importantly, Moreno provided us with a the legal knowledge to help us feel more secure and prepared. Moreno gave attention and care to our case, and having her at our interview was invaluable. We highly recommend Moreno Law. It is also worth noting all of the community legal work Janeth Moreno does, and we continue to get her newsletter and applaud the firms accomplishments!

Definitely wouldn’t recommend. I had a slip and fall about 5 years ago… and just now got compensated, didn’t even get that much. In the time it took my injury suit closed out and settled, we went through an entire pandemic, I lost my father and my husband, I had a child, had a stroke, recovered from a stroke fully, was diagnosed with a heart condition and was no longer a minor. I still can’t believe how long it took. When I first called to start speaking with an attorney they said 12-18 months for payment and closure of the case. 5 YEARS later. Here we are. Wow. If you want a shark for an attorney who actually cares about you and your case, I don’t recommend Simon and Simon. Especially cause they took almost 2/3rds of my settlement money after I’ve been suffering for 5 years. Today, I spoke to a gentleman from Simon and Simon after they had reviewed my review. We were able to have a conversation and spoke about the issues I had put above. He did tell me that he would speak to a few people about a communication issue and try to have that resolved in hopes this would help people in the future using Simon and Simon. As I appreciate the call and conversation about the issues I spoke of, I do not feel as if this review is wrong. I have chosen to keep this review up because even though I had a discussion with a representative, my issues still happened. And I do believe that other people should be made aware and have the opportunity to see how others were treated. I appreciate your time today, however I will not be removing this review. Thank you.

I engaged Attorney Winkowski after a 3 month search for a reputable attorney. I have three close acquaintances who have had poor experiences regarding immigration matters so I wanted to take my time and get it right. I have a few friends in the legal profession and the person in common among their recommendations was Chester Winkowski. My situation was I, as a US Citizen, was bringing my alien fiancée to the US on a K-1 VISA with an I-129F fiancée partition, and then adjusting her status after marriage to an I-551 Green Card and then further removing the provisional restriction from the Green Card after 2 years of marriage. Attorney Winkowski and his team of professionals have a comprehensive methodology for gathering all the data/evidence to prove relationship etc… (this took us a while to gather on our part, but it paid dividends throughout the process in terms of speedy transactions with the INS). They then use this to create the various forms/filings. As a result, nothing was missed, nothing was delayed by INS requests for further information/evidence. Attorney Winkowski was able to accurately estimate when each stage would be completed. I don’t believe I ever had to make a call to check on the status of the applications as they all happened when Attorney Winkowski said they would. Attorney Winkowski attended the INS interviews with my now wife and me. It was clear that Attorney Winkowski is very well respected by the officers that work in the INS, in our case we were dealing with the INS Office in Manchester, New Hampshire. Informally, I was told by one of the security officers at the INS Office that he has the respect of the INS officers as one who does not bring cases to them unless they are thoroughly researched and legitimate. The INS interviews ended up being almost a formality. I truly believe it is the reputation of Attorney Winkowski with the INS that is invaluable at these interviews. In closing my experience of working with Attorney Winkowski and his team was straightforward and positive, leading to a successful process completed in a timely manner. I would recommend Chester Winkowski for this reason.

I hired her for my citizenship application as I was caught with small amount of marijuana few years ago. There were signs that working with her would be a disaster from the very beginning. One time, I asked her if the citizenship application has been filed, to which she replied "yes". But then I heard few days after that it has not been filed. Or there was one time when she asked me if I have made the payment to her few months after I already did. Or there was one time when she was on the zoom call with me and she proceeded to look for my legal documents in front of me, fumbling through documents for good two three minutes. I should have known then. One issue that we talked before submitting the application about was having a police report, that shows that the amount of marijuana I was caught with was less than 30 grams. The immigration law states that if marijuana was less than 30 grams, it should not pose a problem with the citizenship application. I found the police report and submitted that to her. After that, I did not hear anything about it until the interview. During the interview, the USCIS officer asked her if she has a police report that proves that the possession of marijuana was less than 30 grams. She argued that she did not because it was not a conviction. That was the first time that I heard of that argument from her. To which, the USCIS officer argued that it is. Then, to my utter dismay, Susan started arguing angrily with the officer. She asked, I quote, "Are you a licensed lawyer?" in an accusing tone. I tried to stay calm, but inside I was in a sheer panic. I thought I could be deported in a country that I have lived in for more than 10 years. Even though I passed the interview, we got a notice saying that they cannot make the decision. The USCIS officer said that she would talk about this case with her office's lawyers and then send us a request for evidence. When we were walking out of the interview, she said "we don't have a police report, right? why do we not have it again?". That was such a crazy question to me, because I have actually sent her the police report. A week after the interview, she said that she purposefully decided to not show the police report because she believed that it was not a conviction and that showing them the report just might lead to more suspicions and questions. I can understand her strategy, but if that was her strategy, why did she not mention it before the interview to get my take? If I was asked before, I would have probably said maybe we can try that, but bring the police report just in case so that the strategy fails. What I think happened here, is actually that she simply did not think about the whole police report issue until she got to the interview. As I mentioned before, when we walked out of the interview, she told me that we don't have a police report and then asked me why we do not have it. It does not make sense that her "strategy" was to not show it on purpose when she did not even know that we did not have it. This was a deliberate, dishonest attempt to hide a mistake that she has made. Seven months of agony started after that. I could not travel outside of the country because of this delay, and I could not see my girlfriend, for seven months. We did not get any response from USCIS. I would plead with her through emails, which she would seldom reply, to look for ways to speed up the process. One time I even got an email from her saying "DON'T WORRY, YOU WILL NOT BE DEPORTED", all caps. I talked to two different lawyers about this, and they both said it is utterly insane that she did not bring the police report and that it is definitely a conviction. The issue only got resolved when I found a way, by myself to reach out to USCIS. In short, I would really really not recommend working with her on serious immigration issues.

Where do I start I think if I’m not mistaken I met her through Father Teixeria after ordered to do community service after a shoplifting case. I was young and didn’t know anything about the law or deportation. Susan took my case after I was ordered deportable and she made sure everything in her power that I didn’t get deported. I hate to relive those dark days but if it was for her, wouldn’t have been here to raise my children. I trusted her and she did not fail it took time and she stayed on top of everything and thanks to her I became a citizen 2016. I would like to thank you for all your service in the immigration community you are a true hero. Not all heroes where cap some wear suits. I didn’t feel like a client. Catherine Gallagher charged me a flat fee that was supposed to cover up to 3 court visits. After the first court appearance she was already hinting for more money, after the second she asked for more money. Catherine often referred to how much the opposing council was getting paid when suggesting the need for an increase fee. Before the deposition on me was done I did pay another flat fee, in my opinion. I hadn’t exceeded the terms of the first agreement (3 court visits). My conversations were often defensive from Catherine when asking questions or presenting possible suggestions, a comment to note when asking about strategy and possible case leverage was “haven’t you ever watched Judge Judy”. When negotiations never really happened between council, it appeared it was going to trial. Based on the following reasons I had to act quickly and inform the judge I would no longer be moving forward with present council. 1. Catherine was poorly prepared every time we went to court, her attire and professionalism was less than desirable. 2. I felt Catherine did not provide proper review or council on my financials, there was little question or review of my wife’s financial which later was proven to be grossly overstated. 3. There was panicked phone interruptions during court in front of the judge and Catherine couldn’t turn her phone off. 4. The Judge asked for her pre-trial memorandum and her excuses was she left at her office, and informed me it doesn’t matter, that it has no effect on the case. (This document states your position and lays out your arguments so that the court may provide guidance). 5. My updated financials never got to apposing council or the court and my deposition was conducted on outdated financials. Catherine was an hour and a half late for my deposition and not prepared at all, she had no current financial in hand, and had no redirection for me at end of deposition. There were many excuses, stuck on a plane, not able to read or access submissions/documents from opposing council, she complained the type of media provided wasn’t sufficient or didn’t receive document or information pertaining to my case in time.

I recently used Attorney Gallagher for my immigration case. She was amazing. She always returned my phone calls (or text messages). She was straight forward and explained everything in a way I could understand. She was supportive throughout this very long case. If she didn't have the answer right away, she looked into it and got me an answer. She actually listened go me. Unlike my previous attorney, she didn't just say she cared, but actually did! If you want an attorney who listen, fight for you, and at a reasonable cost, I strongly recommend Catherine.

They messed up my wife’s greencard application 5 times that I had to figure out the issues and correct it and submit it again(this costed us 9 months). One of the most annoying experience was when they messed up the DS-260 of my mother’s application which led her to not get visa after interview and delayed her 3 more months. This lawyer was not aware of the basic laws or just choose to share the information with me. She made several unnecessary court dates that did not progress my case but did cost me significantly more in retainers. She never returned my calls until the day before court then screamed and I do mean screamed at me . Unfortunately for me she cost me a ton of money thousands of dollars then she couldn’t get prepared and quit the week of court. I obtained a new lawyer and got the case over with and made out very well thanks to my new well educated attorney. It is a shame she is able to get away with this behavior.

I have hired her for my wife's green card adjustment. First consultation confirmation call was supposed to be done over the phone call. She was rude over call and kept telling me that i have an extreme language barrier. Then asked me to come in the office again and pay the consultation fee again. While we were in the consultation, she kept receiving her personal calls for the hour that we had paid twice for. Then she left the office twice. There is no paper work given when we paid at the same time she made fun of our accents. Then no response to our emails for days and we made phone calls and then asked again to send emails. My friend who suggested me the firm was given a different price for green card application for the spouse and was given a lower price. Our cases were exactly the same.

My wife is French and when we were getting ready to get married, we went through hell trying to figure out the best path forward to be able to live together in the same country. First we hired two French immigration lawyers. The first was rude and unhelpful over and over, so we ended up terminating our work with her. The second seemed at first like he'd be better, but ended up increasing his fee (considerably) twice due to our case becoming more complicated, and threatened to refuse to even send us our paperwork back if we didn't pay right away. So again we walked. The first US attorney we tried working with was friendly and meant well, but after our first consultation with him we went home and good old Google confirmed that his information was incomplete and out of date. Frustrated but determined to find a way, we finally found Edward. Phew!!! From the very first consultation with Edward, we knew we were in the best of hands. Edward was deeply knowledgeable, friendly, patient, and incredibly competent from the get-go. He asked a lot of questions, worked with us in depth to understand every little detail of our case, and was always one step ahead of the process, sending preparation paperwork in advance, checking in regularly to ensure we were staying on top of our preparations, and even offering multiple practice interviews for my wife who was a bit nervous about that part of the process. Twice during our process with Edward, the sale of our apartment in Paris fell through, and we had to change our plans and dates. Each time, based on our experiences with our other lawyers and our recognition that we were asking him to do a lot more work, we offered to increase the fee. He refused categorically, and continued to work with us competently and patiently through our 13 month process, helping us reschedule our interview twice. I'm writing now from California, where my wife, baby, and I have settled and are loving our life. We feel we owe this happiness to Edward in a more profound way than I could possibly express in this little box. There is simply too much to this saga to try to fit it all in, and too much was at stake to express how much Edward's solid work meant to us. For example, the part where my non-renewable tourist visa to stay with my wife in France expired the day before our baby's due date, meaning that if we didn't get the process just right, the potential outcome could have been literally catastrophic. I couldn't recommend Edward more strongly, and we look forward to staying in touch with him over the years, as well as working with him for our green card renewal, and any other needs we ever have in this realm.

My experience with Me Weiner has been just fabulous and, for the very first time, after several bad experiences, it really reconciled my thoughts for this profession. Here are already 6 points on which I am super satisfied: Attorney Weiner's understanding of your case and goals after your first consultation Communication with our firm throughout your case Attorney Weiner's legal advice and counseling Service and effectiveness of our firm Final Resolution of your case Reasonableness of our firm's fees I have really no negative message to tell about him and I hope everyone can live the experience I had with Me Weiner. My story: I'm French and Canadian and in Oct 2013, I had the bad experience to be refused at one USCIS office. I was forbidden to cross the US border because of a naive mistake I did then. After this I tried to fix my situation in Canada, my country. Unfortunately, I just met bad lawyers pretending they were American law experts, giving me wrong info, wanting to extort me some insane fees. After 5 yrs of being a ping pong ball, I never found satisfaction in Canada. I was really lost with these contradictory info I gathered so far. My patience and will to fix properly my issue finally got rewarded. I turned toward an American Attorney Who knows best the American rights than an American attorney ?! That was the wisest thing I did. I chose Me Weiner because he was a specialist in US immigration and he spoke also French, ma native language. It is already very tricky to understand the legal and technical jargon in French so have an entire communication in English would have been an nightmare for me as I wanted to understand fully my situation. Me Weiner and his assistant speak and write perfectly French and it was truly appreciated. I could have chose another American lawyer who spoke French as well but I chose Me Weiner because of these reasons - and even after reading the bad comment about him on this website on March 2014 - - 1st phone call to introduce my case, my fears and situation: free - very affordable fees compared to Canada - Transparent fees, clear WITHOUT mysterious new extra fees during or when we closed the case. - unlimited phone calls and emails but for me, the most important was the simplicity of communication with him. Me Weiner's always been clear. he took the time needed to understand my issue without counting the hours and he noticed points that no one noticed before. Yet these were just essential. Often, experts, whatever the field, use specific jargon and for a non expert person it can be very confusing. Me Weiner was very aware of this and used words everyone could understand, to make sure I was really understanding my file, the consequences, the possibilities. For the 1st time since 2013, to carry this burden and anxiousness with my wife, we were glad to feel that we were not alone anymore. I'm really VERY HAPPY of my experience with Me Weiner. He has been super efficient, noticed all the important facts, always attentive, very concerned to the details. Me Weiner knows perfectly his field of expertise but he knows very well how to communicate and so his assistant. Always very kind and polite to my wife and I. Always honest and clear in his words because the first he wanted for me was to solve my issue that has been following me for 5 years. It is the first time I felt in confidence and supported in a situation that caused many concern and stress to my wife and I and that seemed impossible to fix. The D-day came, Me Weiner adviced me one USCIS to show my file. One of his colleague lawyer close to that office was aware I was there in case I needed extra fast help during the interview. The file was just perfectly built. He prepared me for that event by mail and phone and finally after 30min at the border, I got the authorization to cross again the US border. I found back my liberty thanks to Me Weiner I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Me Weiner.

I am a person who doesn't write review for products or services in general. I don't write any review at all for things that I buy online, let alone a negative review. When it comes to businesses, I am even more careful, because they work hard to gain business and it just doesn't feel right to chop their chances of getting business. But for Saher Macarius I have to leave a review to help prevent others from being screwed. I am writing this review 6 years after the case took place because the case matter was too close to my heart and I did not want to write a biased review mixed with emotions. My family members were in removal proceedings. Saher Macarius said that he could handle this case and win it with ease. He assigned a person from his office to work closely with us. Throughout the preparation of the case I wrote all the materials. How would an immigrant family work with Saher Macarius' office if they did not speak English or were not literate enough? During the court hearing, Saher Macarius was pretty clueless about the case. He did not know some of the key facts or knew them inaccurately. What happened after the hearing was the most shocking part. Judge ordered the family to be removed (deported), Saher Macarius decided that we are going to appeal the case. We said "no, we are not planning to appeal and live in uncertainty for years". It meant loss of income for him. Of course, he was going to charge another several thousand dollars to do the appeal. When he knew that we are not going to do it and instead the family is going to leave the country he refused to talk to us further. The next morning we went to his office to see what's going on, how many years bar we have etc. he asked us to pay a consultation fee to see him! Imagine this, the family just lost a case and is being deported. We all are in shock, and Saher Macarius wants to make another few hundred dollars to see us one last time to basically wrap up the facts. Saher Macarius is a very unethical and incompetent lawyer. I am giving him 1 star because 0 star option doesn't exist.

I was filing for a work visa status extension with Mr. Shane. On my first phone call to him to, I felt very comfortable and he seemed very knowledgeable to my case. I needed to file for a work visa extension. He asked me for a deposit to start working on my case and I gladly gave it to him. He requested a list of paperwork that he required to file for my Visa. After collecting all the paperwork that he requested I went to his office and he made me type out the online application. I thought that was strange, but it really did not bother me too much. He complained that his secretary quit on him. He asked for the remainder of the balance due and I paid him right away. I began to wait for a couple of months, and I didn’t hear back from him. Tried to contact him, no response. Six month passed, and I was getting concerned because my Visa was going to expire. I finally was able to get on the phone with him. And his excuse was that he had an important case to deal with, and he is going to finish my case soon. That did not happen. He had to file for an extension after my Visa had expired. Eventually I received my work visa. Just be aware that once you make your payments to him, he will most likely ignore you and make excuses, which I find extremely unprofessional.

Seyfarth Shaw, the Attorney for the Marriott, is the worst Attorney that I have seen on record. Overbilling, lying to their client, costing their client $$$$, while they misrepresent, just attrocious behavior and an incompetant law firm. My ex lawyer Mark Hooper whom I thought was a great lawyer seriously let me down in court recently! Based on what he advised I've now received the worst judgement that I or anybody I know has ever experienced!!! I would in no way recommend this attorney, for my life is now worse than it's ever been! My world has now been turned upside down for taking his ill advised theory to resolve my matter. As to my judgement in court which should have been dismissed has just gotten 10 times worse. I'm 100% disappointed with the outcome. I should have trusted my own instincts but I decided to trust his. I can't do anything about it now either! All he could say is that he was sorry. But I will now be living in misery for at least the next 18 months of my life!!!

What an Immigration Lawyer Can Do for You

An immigration lawyer specializes in helping individuals, families, and businesses navigate the complex immigration process. These lawyers provide legal guidance on various immigration matters, such as obtaining visas, gaining permanent residency (green cards), applying for citizenship, and defending clients in deportation or removal proceedings. Immigration lawyers also assist with employment-based immigration, asylum applications, and resolving issues related to visas or immigration status.

Whether you're trying to immigrate to the U.S., facing deportation, or sponsoring an employee or family member for a visa, an immigration lawyer can help you understand your legal options and navigate the often complicated legal system.

When Should I Hire an Immigration Lawyer?

Hiring an immigration lawyer is beneficial in many situations where you are dealing with U.S. immigration laws, whether for personal or business reasons. Common reasons to hire an immigration lawyer include:

  • Visa applications: If you need assistance applying for a visa, whether it's a work visa (H-1B), student visa (F-1), or tourist visa (B-1/B-2), a lawyer can help ensure the application is properly completed and submitted.
  • Green card applications: If you're seeking permanent residency, an immigration lawyer can guide you through the process, whether through family sponsorship, employment, or the Diversity Visa (lottery) program.
  • Deportation or removal defense: If you’re facing deportation or removal from the U.S., a lawyer can defend your case in immigration court and seek to prevent removal.
  • Asylum applications: If you’re seeking asylum due to persecution or fear of persecution in your home country, a lawyer can help you prepare a strong case and file for asylum.
  • Family reunification: If you're a U.S. citizen or permanent resident looking to bring family members to the U.S., a lawyer can assist with the family sponsorship process.
  • Citizenship and naturalization: If you're ready to apply for U.S. citizenship, a lawyer can help you navigate the naturalization process and ensure you meet all the requirements.
  • Business immigration: If you're an employer seeking to hire foreign workers, a lawyer can assist with employment-based visas, labor certification, and compliance with immigration regulations.
  • Special immigration categories: Immigration lawyers also handle complex cases, such as visas for victims of human trafficking (T visa), crime victims (U visa), or those seeking Temporary Protected Status (TPS).

Hiring an immigration lawyer early in the process can help you avoid delays, errors, and possible denials due to incomplete or incorrect applications.

What Does an Immigration Lawyer Do?

An immigration lawyer provides a wide range of services to help clients with their immigration needs, whether personal or business-related. Their tasks often include:

  • Assisting with visa applications: Helping clients fill out and submit visa applications, ensuring all documentation is complete and accurate.
  • Filing for green cards and permanent residency: Guiding clients through the process of applying for a green card, including family-based, employment-based, or other forms of residency.
  • Defending against deportation or removal: Representing clients in immigration court who are facing deportation and working to prevent removal from the U.S.
  • Preparing asylum cases: Assisting clients in applying for asylum based on fear of persecution in their home country due to race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group.
  • Handling citizenship applications: Helping lawful permanent residents apply for naturalization and ensuring they meet all the legal requirements for U.S. citizenship.
  • Employment-based immigration: Assisting employers with the process of sponsoring foreign workers for temporary or permanent visas, including H-1B, L-1, and EB-1 through EB-5 visas.
  • Representation in immigration interviews: Preparing clients for immigration interviews and attending interviews at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) offices.
  • Appealing denied applications: If a visa, green card, or citizenship application is denied, a lawyer can file appeals or motions to reopen or reconsider the case.

How Are Immigration Lawyers Paid?

Immigration lawyers generally charge for their services based on the type of immigration case and the complexity of the legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: Many immigration lawyers charge a flat fee for specific services, such as preparing a visa application, green card petition, or citizenship application. Flat fees help clients know upfront what the legal costs will be for a particular service.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex cases, such as deportation defense or appeals, some lawyers charge by the hour. Hourly rates vary depending on the lawyer's experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Retainer: For ongoing immigration matters, some clients may need to pay a retainer, which is an upfront payment billed against as the lawyer works on the case.
  • Pro bono or sliding scale: Some immigration lawyers or nonprofit organizations may offer free or low-cost services for clients with limited financial means, particularly in asylum or humanitarian cases.

It’s essential to discuss the fee structure with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand the costs and payment arrangements.

How Much Does an Immigration Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an immigration lawyer varies based on the type of legal service required, the lawyer's experience, and the complexity of the case. General cost estimates include:

  • Visa applications: For help with visa applications (e.g., H-1B, L-1, F-1), legal fees may range from $2,000 to $7,500, depending on the complexity and the type of visa.
  • Green card applications: Fees for family-based or employment-based green card applications typically range from $3,000 to $10,000, depending on the case.
  • Deportation defense: For defending clients in removal proceedings, costs can range from $5,000 to $15,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the case and how long the case takes.
  • Asylum cases: Asylum applications may range from $2,000 to $10,000, depending on whether the case is defensive (in removal proceedings) or affirmative (not in removal proceedings).
  • Citizenship applications: Legal fees for filing a naturalization application usually range from $1,500 to $5,000, depending on the complexity of the client’s immigration history.
  • Business immigration services: Fees for assisting businesses with employment-based visas (such as H-1B or EB-5 visas) often range from $3,000 to $10,000 or more.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of costs and fee arrangements before proceeding with legal services.

Top Questions to Ask an Immigration Lawyer

Before hiring an immigration lawyer, it's essential to ask questions to ensure they have the experience and expertise to handle your case effectively. Important questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with immigration cases like mine?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it’s family-based immigration, employment visas, or asylum.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a flat fee, hourly rate, or retainer, and ask for a detailed estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case and the potential outcomes, including any challenges you might face.
  4. How long will the process take?
Immigration cases can take time, so ask how long it may take to process your application or resolve your legal issue.
  5. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may handle parts of your case. Make sure you know who will be working on your case directly.
  6. What documents do I need to provide?
Ask the lawyer about the documentation required to support your case, such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, or employment contracts.

How to Check the Credibility of an Immigration Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable immigration lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Check their state bar status: Confirm with your state bar association that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for specific immigration law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in immigration law and have experience handling cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their ability to handle immigration cases.
  • Check for industry affiliations: Membership in organizations like the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) can indicate the lawyer’s expertise and commitment to immigration law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with an immigration lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Passport and immigration documents: Bring your passport, visa, and any documents related to your current immigration status.
  • Family documents: If you're applying for a family-based visa or green card, bring marriage certificates, birth certificates, and proof of family relationships.
  • Employment information: For employment-based visas, provide your employment contract, offer letter, or other documentation of your job.
  • Criminal records (if applicable): If you have any criminal history, bring copies of court records and other relevant documents.
  • Timeline of events: Provide a clear timeline of any prior immigration applications, visas, or issues with immigration authorities.
  • List of questions: Prepare any questions you have about your immigration case, the process, costs, and the likelihood of success.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer understand your case more effectively and get the best possible legal advice on how to proceed.
