I want to first and foremost can't express enough of my gratitude Towards the amazing team at Riddle and Brantley. I was in a really bad car accident. And after trying to work with the insurance company with the at fault party and they weren't willing to help me. I honestly felt like it was the end of the road, and no one was going to help me. Then I contacted this company and man old man. I can honestly say they came in the clutch. I'm blessed and grateful to my lawyer Daren Dawson and the exceptionally gifted an incredibly sweet patient Case Manager Kalena Tavares for their time and effort and assisting me when I needed someone the most, they didn't just treat me like a patient. They treated me like family. And I will forever recommend this amazing law firm for all of your law. Needs, thank you guys, you're the best.

Excellent experience with Riddle & Riddle consultation. Having the time to take out of their day to come to my home and visit me was truly a blessing. A time where I needed to be heard and listened to gave me a sense of peace. I truly appreciate them and the kind, warm spirit that Riddle & Riddle have. I highly recommend them to anyone who is in need. Thank you Kevin C.

Not only would I recommend Jim, I have recommended Jim to various business associates! First and foremost, Jim Secor is interested in finding a solution to the issue at-hand; NOT padding his bill. While compromise is generally his first inclination, he has absolutely no trepidation about vigorously pursuing litigation if that is what the situation demands. I have worked with a great number of attorneys over the past 30+ years in business and Jim's skills are unparalleled.

Mr. Secor provided us with our best interest as a priority. Very straight forward in keeping us apprised of information as it became pertinent to our situation. He always moved in a foward progress and stayed true to the objection of the goals. His professionalism and diligence is exemplary of why he is considered of the best in his field if not the best. Finally, he was a Navy JAG and service to our beloved country is important to us.

I met Jim about 10 years ago when someone recommended him to me. From the start I liked the fact that Jim did not have an office filled with expensive trophy items, that says alot if you know what I mean. Nothing I can't stand more than "Super This" or "AV" that. As for Jim, he was straight forward and honest. He was to the point and realistic. And we prevailed in my case! Over the years, I have used him again, recommended him to friends and family, and currently he is our lawyer in a civil case. Everyone that Ive referred him too has had nothing but good things to say about him. Ive come to learn Jim Secor is a well respected honest man, but mostly...Ive really come to like the person that he is. Thank you Jim for all you've done for me and those ive referred to you! I hope you practice law in Guilford County for years to come! As far as lawyers go, you are truly one in a million.

Vernon has been absolutely amazing. A year and half after I had been injured at work and after receiving medical treatment, it was time to start the settlement process. I was given an offer and wasn't sure if it was good. I found The Sumwalt Group on Google and saw the 5 star reviews. I reached out to them to see if I could get some advice. Vernon was the one to call me and gave me some wonderful free advice on countering and what would be a good amount. He also looked over the settlement agreement I received to make sure it wouldn't mess up any potential social security/disability in the future. Vernon made me feel like he cared and like he wanted the best for me on this settlement and helped me to avoid having to hire a lawyer and drag out the process. I hope I never get hurt on the job again, but if I ever do I will definitely reach out to them again.

As an attorney who practiced for 11 years at a large firm before taking another career path, I was incredibly impressed with Asheville Legal! Jake is bright, a fantastic listener, astute, and responsive. Jake's legal assistant is helpful, and offered lighting fast responses to all inquiries and requests. This is a very rare combination in the legal field. Jake's quick and on-point analysis brought a near immediate resolution to a potentially arduous situation. The icing on the cake-- the fees are very reasonable! I would highly recommend this law firm to anyone. Great experience.

Louis Wooten is an accomplished attorney but I'm not rating him 5 stars for services he rendered. I'm rating him 5 stars because he helped me resolve a NCDOR tax issue without taking a dollar from me. Instead of taking me on as a client he encouraged me to resolve this issue on my own, because it would likely be fairly straightforward to demonstrate to the NCDOR that I wasn't required to file a return during the year in question. He explained precisely how to convey this to the NCDOR auditor and I'm pleased to confirm that my purported tax liability was written down to $0 not long thereafter. Thank you Louis - you're the best!

A few months ago I received a very disturbing and aggressive letter from the IRS. They denied an earlier extensive deduction I had made. I briefly attempted to meet their demands for information but was very inadequate in navigating their requests. I called a prominent attorney I had worked with asking him for direction. Without Hesitation or Reservation he referred me to Mr. Wooten. I can truthfully state my concerns could not have been treated with any more professional and personal attention than was given by Mr. Wooten and his paralegal. His experience and expertise is unparalleled in the Southeast. I am pleased to report my case resolved with the most favorable outcome. So it is " Without the same Hesitation and Reservation" I would suggest Anyone to consult Mr. Wooten early for representation and Total Piece of Mind. Respectfully, James Howell June 2024

After having initial consultations with several attorneys in area, I was so relieved that I found Cody Burgin to handle a very painful divorce. His peaceful and caring disposition made the whole process so much easier. He was thoughtful and patient with me when I was very stressed and answered each question I had in a way that was easy to follow. Most off all I did not feel like I was just a number but a real human being and I sensed his genuine care. I am so glad that I trusted my gut and did not hire the first attorneys I visited as Cody Burgin was worth the wait and helped me to finally get this whole thing in the rear view mirror so I can heal. I highly recommend him. Very fair and personal.

Gary Sue was one of the most knowledgable, helpful and hands on attorney's I've ever dealt with. He took care of my car accident from start to finish without little or no hiccups. Without even dealing with the hassle of being in court litigating; Mr. Sue settled my claim out of court via mediation and we received a sum reward much higher than I expected. I'm not saying Gary Sue is unethical or cuts corners but he assured that I was taken care of. I commend him on the work he does within his profession and would recommend him to anyone within the legal system who is looking for results.

Gary is not only a great attorney but an even better person. He helped me with my case from start to finish and kept me updated with his progress along the way. He is great when conducting a deposition and even better in trial using his assertiveness with other members of the court, swaying jurors with his wit as well as charm and finally though he has lots of work and a large number of clients he treats every client just the same and is great at what he does. I would recommend him to anyone looking for an experienced and brilliant personal injury attorney who has a proven track record for winning. He got me a very large jury verdict award in my car accident law suit.

My wife and I recently closed on a new construction home purchase in Black Mountain, NC. We hired Mr. Christy, who had been recommended to us by a close friend who had used him in the past. Our home purchase ended up having several issues that came up after a survey was done that caused a lot of stress for me and my wife. Mr. Christy proved to be a calm, thorough and very experienced attorney and he delayed the release of our money to the builder/seller until every issue was satisfactorily taken care of. The communication we received from him and one of his employees (Donna Farr) was superb and made us feel comfortable and confident throughout the process. This law firm, Stone and Christy will now be our go to law firm for any future legal matters when we arrive in our soon to be new hometown.

David Russ provided excellent legal services to us. We had moved from another state and needed to have our trust and other estate planning documents updated so they would be in compliance with NC law. We were contemplating other changes on which his experience and knowledge about estate planning matters helped to inform our decisions. Mr. Russ was responsive to our needs. We needed the updates in a tight timeframe which he met. He demonstrated professionalism and patience in working with us. The latter was needed because my husband’s and my availability were limited because of pressing personal matters. We live in a county more than three hours from his office, so communicated with Mr. Russ exclusively by telephone and email. His good communications skills, verbal and written, made up for our not being able to meet in person. His prices were fair, considerably less than other quotes we had received.

I had hired another lawyer, but replaced him as soon as I spoke with Mr. Little. James didn’t over promise, but gave me confidence he knew the anxiety this matter was causing, and the hope that he would have it dismissed entirely. He talked to me like a person, not a case file. Let me start by saying…I know all lawyers lie. John Green and his legal team LIE directly TO THEIR CLIENTS about the very thing they said they were going to do and what they WERE PAID to do. We expected them to do their (simple) job and they failed miserably. We spoke to John Green 3 days after our incident occurred. We made it clear in the meeting that we wanted to subpoena video surveillance footage from the establishment at which the incident occurred. John said he could do that, wrote it down in his intake notes, and named his price. He was paid the next day, with us knowing surveillance footage has a time limit and we needed it ASAP. Big mistake. Over the next 3 months we dealt with POOR COMMUNICATION. And I mean POOR. We are from out of state and phone was obviously our whole means of communication. John was never available to talk. If you enjoy calling someone (that you hired) multiple times a day, multiple days in a row without getting a phone call back, then this firm is for you. TERRIBLE. We were LIED TO on several occasions. “The subpoena was sent and hopefully we’ll have the footage in a few days”. The subpoena was never sent and we continued to be LIED TO. Fast forward to January (original date was in the beginning of November). After multiple continuances in court (because we were expecting John to do the job he was paid to do and to actually obtain the footage we requested) the DA stated they also wanted to see the footage. Only then did John Green and his team make an effort to drive down the street to the establishment and serve them. By this point the establishment said the footage erases and they could not produce. Now, if John had done what he said he was going to do in the beginning, and in a timely fashion this would not be the case. A complete LACK OF EFFORT from John Green and quite honestly the entire thing felt like a set up as he kept saying “I don’t think it’s going to change anything in your case”. I don’t care what you think…do what you were paid to do. There is no excuse for the LACK OF EFFORT John Green and his legal team put into this case. 0 out of 10. ABSOLUTELY WOULD NOT RECOMMEND ANYONE to trust these RATS with your legal issues. Spend your money elsewhere on a lawyer who actually cares.

This entire team is amazing, and truly goes above and beyond in every attempt to get their client closed, even when that means cleaning up a mess to get paperwork corrected from "the bank." Cheryl, Melisa, and Patty are quite the team, and Mr. Jacobs is very kind and patient, going out of his way to ensure that you're comfortable and understanding of what you're signing. 10/10 would recommend!

We did a real estate closing with this firm. The closing went fine but the assistant made a mistake and mailed the closing check to an incorrect address. When it came time to reimburse me for my costs she said she would only pay part of the fees. If I ever have a need for a real estate office I will surely look elsewhere.

I would recommend this law firm to anyone needing a great lawyer for Workmen Comp cases!!! Bob and his team worked long hours and months for me and my husband!! My husband worked at a company for 36 years!! And made him resign after 2 injuries! This was very heartbreaking and wrong in all kinds of ways! But Bob was able to get us a settlement that would at least keep us a float for awhile. Until he found another job! Thank you Bob and your team for all you did for us. Anna Jones

I was referred to Lucien by another firm. I called him in a panic, and he was so kind enough to stop what he was doing to help me. Lucien was very thorough in making sure he understood what was happening in my case. He is very easy to talk to, and you can tell he comes from a place of compassion for others. Although I was not able to retain Lucien for my issues, I highly recommend him to handle yours! Thank you Lucien for being a kind human being on the right side of justice!

What an Insurance Lawyer Can Do for You

An insurance lawyer specializes in legal issues related to insurance policies and claims. These lawyers help individuals, businesses, and insurance companies navigate disputes involving insurance coverage, claim denials, bad faith claims, and policy interpretation. Insurance lawyers can represent policyholders who feel they've been unfairly denied coverage, or they can work on behalf of insurance companies to defend against fraudulent or inflated claims.

Whether you're filing a claim, disputing a denial, or dealing with complex coverage issues, an insurance lawyer can provide critical guidance and legal representation to protect your rights and ensure you receive the benefits you're entitled to under your policy.

When Should I Hire an Insurance Lawyer?

Hiring an insurance lawyer is advisable in several situations, particularly when disputes arise over insurance coverage, claim denials, or bad faith actions. Common reasons to hire an insurance lawyer include:

  • Denied insurance claims: If your insurance company denies your claim, a lawyer can help determine whether the denial was justified or if you should challenge the decision.
  • Bad faith insurance practices: If you believe your insurer has acted in bad faith, such as delaying payment or failing to properly investigate your claim, a lawyer can help you pursue legal action.
  • Underpaid claims: If the insurance company has offered less compensation than you believe your claim is worth, a lawyer can negotiate for a higher payout or file a lawsuit.
  • Coverage disputes: When there's ambiguity or disagreement about what your policy covers, a lawyer can provide clarity and advocate for your rights under the policy.
  • Business insurance claims: If you own a business and are dealing with commercial insurance claims (e.g., property damage, liability, or professional indemnity), a lawyer can help ensure your business receives proper coverage.
  • Third-party claims: If you're being sued for liability and your insurance company refuses to defend or indemnify you, an insurance lawyer can help enforce your coverage rights.
  • Appealing long-term disability claims: If your disability insurance claim has been denied, a lawyer can assist in gathering evidence and appealing the decision to get the benefits you deserve.

What Does an Insurance Lawyer Do?

An insurance lawyer provides a wide range of services to assist with insurance-related legal issues. These can include:

  • Reviewing insurance policies: A lawyer can review your insurance policy to ensure you understand your rights and obligations, as well as clarify what coverage is provided.
  • Filing insurance claims: Assisting with the preparation and filing of claims to ensure all necessary documentation is submitted correctly.
  • Challenging claim denials: If your claim has been denied, a lawyer can investigate the reasons for denial and file appeals or lawsuits to challenge the decision.
  • Litigating bad faith claims: Representing clients in bad faith insurance cases, where the insurer fails to act in good faith by unfairly delaying, denying, or underpaying a valid claim.
  • Negotiating settlements: Helping policyholders negotiate settlements with insurance companies to receive fair compensation for claims.
  • Defending against fraudulent claims: Representing insurance companies to defend against false or exaggerated claims filed by policyholders or third parties.
  • Handling disputes over policy language: Interpreting complex insurance policies and resolving disputes between the insured and the insurer regarding coverage limits, exclusions, and conditions.

How Are Insurance Lawyers Paid?

Insurance lawyers typically charge for their services in different ways, depending on the nature of the case and the type of insurance issue involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Contingency fee: For many policyholders disputing claim denials or underpayments, lawyers work on a contingency basis. This means the lawyer only gets paid if they win or settle the case, taking a percentage (usually between 25% and 40%) of the recovered amount.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing legal issues, such as bad faith lawsuits or business insurance disputes, insurance lawyers may charge an hourly rate. This rate varies depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Flat fee: For simpler matters, such as reviewing an insurance policy or helping file a claim, some lawyers charge a flat fee for their services.
  • Retainer: For businesses or clients with ongoing legal needs, an insurance lawyer may require a retainer fee, which is an upfront payment for future services.

It’s important to clarify the fee structure with your lawyer during the initial consultation to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does an Insurance Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an insurance lawyer depends on the complexity of the case, the lawyer's experience, and the payment structure. General cost estimates include:

  • Contingency fees: If your lawyer works on a contingency fee basis, you won’t pay any fees upfront, but the lawyer will take a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or judgment awarded.
  • Hourly rates: Hourly rates for insurance lawyers generally range from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location. Complex cases involving bad faith or high-value business claims may require significant hours, leading to higher legal costs.
  • Flat fees: For specific services, such as reviewing an insurance policy, lawyers may charge a flat fee ranging from $500 to $2,500, depending on the complexity of the task.
  • Retainers: Businesses or individuals seeking ongoing insurance legal services may pay a retainer, which can range from $5,000 to $20,000 or more, depending on the lawyer and scope of work.

Make sure to discuss costs and payment structures with your lawyer before proceeding to understand how much the services will cost.

Top Questions to Ask an Insurance Lawyer

Before hiring an insurance lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they are the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What experience do you have with insurance law?
Ensure the lawyer has specific experience handling cases involving your type of insurance, whether it’s auto, health, home, or business-related.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer works on contingency, hourly rates, or flat fees, and ask for an estimate of the total cost of your case.
  3. What is your success rate with insurance disputes?
Ask about the lawyer’s track record in winning or settling cases similar to yours.
  4. What are my chances of success?
A good lawyer will provide an honest assessment of your case’s strengths and weaknesses and outline the possible outcomes.
  5. How long will the process take?
Get an estimate of how long it will take to resolve your claim or dispute, as some cases can extend over months or even years.
  6. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may handle some aspects of your case. Make sure you know who will be managing your case.

How to Check the Credibility of an Insurance Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a reputable insurance lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Review their experience in insurance law: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in insurance law and have experience with cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Search for reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s expertise and professionalism.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have dealt with similar insurance issues.
  • Check for industry memberships: Membership in organizations like the American Bar Association’s Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section (TIPS) can indicate the lawyer’s focus on insurance law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with an insurance lawyer, come prepared with the following documents and information:

  • A copy of your insurance policy: Bring the policy related to your claim or dispute so the lawyer can review the coverage details.
  • Any correspondence with the insurance company: Provide copies of letters, emails, or other communications between you and your insurer regarding the claim or denial.
  • Proof of claim and supporting documents: Bring any documentation you have submitted with your claim, including receipts, invoices, photos, medical records, or repair estimates.
  • List of questions: Prepare a list of questions you want to ask about your case, the legal process, and the potential outcomes.
  • Timeline of events: Be ready to provide a clear timeline of the incident that led to the claim and any steps you’ve taken with your insurance company.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can ensure that the lawyer has all the information they need to assess your case and provide the best legal advice.
