I don't think there's enough words to express how grateful my wife and I are for Daniel Wayne, Piper Wheeler, and the staff at Wolford Wayne. They made the lawsuit process a lot less painful with their extensive knowledge of SF real estate law and tenant's rights while bringing kindness and humor to the table. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

I cannot speak highly enough of the Leigh Law Group. We have had a few advocates and two law firms throughout our trials and tribulations with our school district. The first law firm refused to move forward with our case and essentially bullied us into taking a retro-settlement with the district. We quickly switched law firms and started working with Damien Troutman from the Leigh Law Group. I liked Damien because he was to the point, responsive, and communicative. It also helps that there was a positive outcome to our litigation, something that Damien never doubted. He was willing to go through an entire trial and even go federal if that is what it took. You cannot go wrong with the Leigh Law Group. Ms. Leigh was very helpful throughout as well. A+.

We are forever grateful for the support and representation from Leigh Law Group. After moving from one school district to another, our child was left without a school and approved services for months, disrupting their learning and causing significant regression in behavioral & educational development. We tried on numerous occasions to work with the new district towards a solution, including attending school with our child for several months due to the districts inability to find and hire appropriate staff, so we went through multiple parenting groups on Facebook to find someone to represent our child and family in litigation. Leigh Law Group were recommended by parents all over California, so we made contact and that was the best decisions we could have made for our family. Mandy and Damien are incredibly well-versed in law and experienced in representing families in situations like ours. They listened to us and fought for us and every dollar was a dollar well-spent. I can’t get into details on the outcome, but it was favorable and our child is in a much better situation than we could have imagined. We can’t recommend Leigh Law Group enough - please contact them if your family is in need of help and support with representation, counsel, or advice navigating California school systems.

Ottinger Employment Lawyers provided incredibly helpful counsel in dealing with a past employer. Robert Ottinger is responsive, professional, knowledgeable and above all effective in his advice and representation. His office and support staff are also quick to respond to all client communications and will go the extra mile to be helpful. I would recommend this firm without reservation to anyone who is in need of representation for employment issues.

Robert is one of the most conscientious, hard-working and knowledgeable professionals, I’ve ever met. I had some work related issues that he helped me with. Without even me having to ask, he reached out to numerous colleagues to help me rectify and come to a conclusion about a particular problem I was having with an injury. This helped save me a ton of money and time, He’s a tremendous attorney. Robert is an extremely kind individual who I can tell, really cares about his clients. He’s also smart as a whip and Super sharp as far as his knowledge of the law and how it applies to employment law. One of the best professionals I’ve ever worked with. If I could give him 10 stars, I would!

I received exceptional service and advice from Robert. He was responsive and took the time to ensure he fully understood the issues by asking lots of questions. He was both clear and supportive in laying out my options for action and their respective risks and opportunities. I highly recommend Ottinger Employment Lawyers, and wouldn't hesitate to seek their counsel in the future.

If you have any Immigration issues, feel like your case isn't moving or going anywhere, or if you think it's too complicated, I highly recommend Atty Rosy Cho. I've acquired a service from a well-known Filipino Immigration Law Firm. I had great consultations with the Partner/Face/Front of the company, and my questions and queries were answered by what I wanted to hear. I decided to acquire their services. I paid the retention fee as agreed. Later found out that my case was assigned to an associate when I called for a follow-up question. I find that interesting since I paid a partner's retention fee. I shrugged it off since I was assured the partner is overseeing my case. That's not why I left their service. After a few months have passed since I acquired the services and filled up the forms, but I have not received any receipts or notifications from USCIS. I decided to pick up the phone request for an update. That's when the paralegal told me I was missing documents that's why it was not filed. That was the last straw. I went searching for another firm through Yelp/Google. That was when I saw Atty Cho's reviews. I was impressed I decided to contact her. Right off the bat, I connected with her and her paralegal. She reviewed my documents and situations and made me sign documents to withdraw my paperwork from the other firm. Not even months I started receiving notifications. Atty Cho works tirelessly and continues to follow up if any updates or my attention is needed. I've got the results I wanted not what I want to hear. Thank you, Atty Cho! I wish I can do more than just a review to show how much I appreciate what you have done for me and my family!

I would like to say thank you to my paralegal, Samantha, who helped me throughout the green card process. She is patient and knowledgeable about the case details. She met with me multiple times before the application and even after the application when I had some questions. She is a really nice person, always thinking from a customer-centric perspective, and is responsible with ownership.

I started the trademark process by myself and ran into a sticking point because, well, I'm not a lawyer. Trevor was on it within 24 hours and fixed the problem I had. Super responsive. GREAT value. I live in Cleveland, Ohio and he made this easy, including helping with all e-signatures required to get our trademark. This was during the pandemic and I'm thrilled that our trademark was recently issued.

BUYER BEWARE!. Lawyers have a very noble and esteemed profession. However, Trevor Caudle actions handling my case was unbecoming of an attorney with ethical standards. I did not like how he was very pleasant and understanding from the beginning but as soon as I gave him the money he became very distant and unresponsive. I tried several times to have him sit with me but I always get he is going camping, yes camping!. On several occasions, he is out of town, that is understandable but I can't know for sure. He never ever met me in person. All my court hearings, he did over the phone; I never knew that lawyers can just call in and never have to appear in court, when that happens, you could tell, your attorney never took your case seriously. Trevor Caudle had me logged onto San Mateo court web site and we went over every nuance of my case with him, that was before he even took the case. Then after the payment, he came back with a story that he did more "research" now I do not have a case at all. I pressed him to pursue my cross complaint against my legal adversaries, that when he decided to engage in some legal maneuvers that are way over my head because I am not verse in law. Of course, he dropped me as a client and was left worst off than before I hired him.

I've used Trevor for both personal and business matters. He is smart, quick, and efficient. He takes the time to explain things, and if he doesn't know the answer right away, he'll either find it for you or find someone who does. Some lawyers are difficult to get on the phone, but not Trevor. He's prompt and available, and does what he says he'll do. I'll recommend him to anyone who asks for a referral.

Matt’s integrity and professionalism is unmatched. Because of Mr. Sullivan, I was able to come out on top of a very serious 7 felony 5 misdemeanor charge. Kind of speaks for itself…. Matt never lost sight of my case during the long three years of fighting and he would always surprise me with how much he was always working behind the scenes and in between court dates. His Intuitive and confident nature, combined with a brilliant legal team, provides comfort in dealing with such a stressful/uncertain time in one’s life. Not a day goes by that I’m not thankful for Matt’s hard work and determination to let my voice be heard. I know that my favorable outcome was only possible with the help Matt Sullivan and his team. Thank you Matt for a second chance at life Sincerely, MC

Krista represented our children at school. At the heart of her work, she fights hard for human rights and for the best interests of our children. I am so impressed by her professionalism, ethics and wisdom. She listens and fully understands our struggles. She is highly skilled dealing with school administrations and the court system. She truly is the very best.

Very disappointed! I speeded 15mph over the speed limit and Ticket Crushers managed to get me traffic school plus $230 fine. And they charged $300 for it. I’d better off defending for myself. I don’t know where the good reviews come from.

What an Intellectual Property Lawyer Can Do for You

An intellectual property (IP) lawyer specializes in protecting the rights related to creations of the mind, including inventions, designs, logos, brands, artistic works, and trade secrets. IP lawyers help clients secure legal rights to their intellectual property, enforce those rights, and defend against infringement claims. They can also assist with licensing agreements, negotiating royalties, and managing intellectual property portfolios.

Whether you're a business seeking to protect a trademark, an inventor patenting a new product, or an artist protecting your work from unauthorized use, an intellectual property lawyer ensures that your creations are legally safeguarded and helps you navigate the complex landscape of IP law.

When Should I Hire an Intellectual Property Lawyer?

Hiring an intellectual property lawyer is beneficial in many situations where you need to secure, protect, or defend your intellectual property rights. Key scenarios include:

  • Filing a patent: If you've invented a new product or process, a lawyer can help you apply for a patent and ensure the protection of your invention.
  • Trademarking a logo or brand name: To protect your business's brand identity, a lawyer can assist in trademarking logos, names, slogans, or symbols.
  • Copyright protection: If you’ve created an original work (e.g., a book, music, or software), a lawyer can help you register your copyright and ensure your rights are protected.
  • Trade secrets protection: For businesses with proprietary information, a lawyer can draft agreements to protect trade secrets and ensure they remain confidential.
  • Defending against infringement: If someone is using your intellectual property without permission, a lawyer can help you take legal action to stop the infringement and seek damages.
  • Licensing agreements: If you want to allow others to use your intellectual property for a fee, an IP lawyer can draft or negotiate licensing agreements that protect your interests.
  • IP portfolio management: If you have multiple forms of intellectual property, a lawyer can help you manage your IP portfolio, ensuring all assets are protected and strategically utilized.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help you avoid legal pitfalls and ensure that your intellectual property is adequately protected from the start.

What Does an Intellectual Property Lawyer Do?

An intellectual property lawyer provides a wide range of services to protect and enforce your intellectual property rights. They can:

  • File patents and trademarks: Helping you prepare and submit patent or trademark applications to protect your inventions, brands, or logos.
  • Register copyrights: Assisting with the registration of original creative works to ensure your rights are protected under copyright law.
  • Litigate infringement cases: Representing you in court if your intellectual property has been used without authorization or if you're accused of infringement.
  • Draft licensing agreements: Creating contracts that allow others to use your intellectual property while ensuring you retain control and receive appropriate compensation.
  • Manage IP portfolios: Helping businesses and individuals manage multiple forms of intellectual property, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets.
  • Conduct due diligence in business deals: Ensuring that intellectual property assets are properly valued and protected during mergers, acquisitions, or licensing agreements.
  • Monitor and enforce IP rights: Monitoring for potential infringement and taking legal action when necessary to protect your IP from unauthorized use.

How Are Intellectual Property Lawyers Paid?

Intellectual property lawyers typically charge for their services in different ways, depending on the complexity of the work and the type of intellectual property being protected. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For specific services such as filing a trademark or copyright application, many lawyers charge a flat fee that covers all the work required for that service.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex tasks, such as drafting licensing agreements or litigating infringement cases, lawyers may charge by the hour. Hourly rates vary depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Contingency fee: In some cases, particularly for IP litigation, a lawyer may work on a contingency basis, meaning they only get paid if they win or settle the case. Their fee would typically be a percentage of the settlement or damages awarded.
  • Retainer: For ongoing IP needs, some clients may pay a retainer fee upfront to secure the lawyer’s services, which the lawyer then bills against as they work on the case.

It’s essential to discuss fees and payment arrangements with your lawyer upfront to ensure there are no surprises.

How Much Does an Intellectual Property Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an intellectual property lawyer depends on the complexity of the case and the type of intellectual property involved. General cost estimates include:

  • Trademark registration: The cost of registering a trademark can range from $500 to $2,000, depending on the complexity of the application and whether there are any issues during the registration process.
  • Patent filing: Filing a patent is often more expensive, with costs ranging from $5,000 to $15,000 or more, depending on the type of patent (utility, design, etc.) and the complexity of the invention.
  • Copyright registration: Registering a copyright is usually less costly, with fees typically ranging from $300 to $1,500 for most creative works.
  • Litigation: If you’re involved in an IP dispute or infringement case, litigation can be costly, with fees ranging from $10,000 to hundreds of thousands of dollars, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Licensing agreements: Drafting or negotiating a licensing agreement can range from $1,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the terms and complexity of the agreement.

Always get a clear estimate of costs during your initial consultation to ensure that the services are within your budget.

Top Questions to Ask an Intellectual Property Lawyer

Before hiring an intellectual property lawyer, it’s essential to ask questions that will help you determine if they are the right fit for your case. Here are some key questions to ask:

  1. What experience do you have with intellectual property law?
Ensure that the lawyer has substantial experience with your specific type of intellectual property, whether it’s patents, trademarks, copyrights, or trade secrets.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or contingency, and get a clear estimate of what your case will cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success with my application or case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of the chances of successfully obtaining a patent, trademark, or copyright or winning an infringement case.
  4. How long will the process take?
Ask about the expected timeline for filing your application or resolving your dispute, as IP matters can sometimes take months or years to finalize.
  5. What steps will you take to protect my intellectual property?
Ask the lawyer how they will help ensure your intellectual property is fully protected and what strategies they use to enforce IP rights.
  6. Have you handled cases similar to mine?
If your case involves specific industries or technologies, ask whether the lawyer has worked with similar clients and what the outcomes were.

How to Check the Credibility of an Intellectual Property Lawyer

To ensure that you’re hiring a reputable intellectual property lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for specific IP experience: Check their website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in intellectual property law and have successfully handled cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what past clients have said about their experience with the lawyer.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their professionalism and success in handling IP matters.
  • Check for certifications or memberships: Membership in organizations like the International Trademark Association (INTA) or the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) can indicate expertise in intellectual property law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with an intellectual property lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant information and documents. Here’s what you should bring:

  • A detailed description of your invention, brand, or creative work: Be prepared to explain what you are seeking to protect, including any unique aspects or characteristics of your intellectual property.
  • Any existing IP registrations or applications: If you’ve already filed for trademarks, patents, or copyrights, bring copies of the relevant documents.
  • Information on potential infringers: If you are dealing with an infringement issue, provide details of the alleged infringer, including evidence of the infringement, such as images, documents, or correspondence.
  • Questions about the process: Write down any questions you have about protecting or enforcing your intellectual property rights, including timelines, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be clear about what you want to achieve, whether it’s securing a patent, protecting a brand, or enforcing your IP rights against unauthorized use.

Being prepared for your first consultation will help the lawyer assess your situation more effectively and provide you with the best possible advice for protecting your intellectual property.
