A bit lacking on customer service and manners. Every time I call them my "hellos", "good mornings" and "have a nice day" are greeted with silence, a hang up click or some snarky response. Do they know they're talking to paying customers? I wonder.... Call me old fashion, but I do appreciate a respectful exchange and greeting. Especially if I am paying top dollar for boilerplate templates I could potentially fill out myself.

Bottom Line - Colleen Haddow is the BEST attorney I could have ever wished for --my only regret is that I didn't start with her from the beginning. Ms. Colleen Haddow came as a recommendation from my previous law firm following failed mediation in a highly complex, contentious, and financially draining divorce and custody case. The opposing counsel - whose professional reputation precedes her as a person devoid of ethics and civility, made finding a willing, capable, and affordable replacement daunting. Colleen personally and immediately took my call for an intake interview. When I opened by informing her of who opposing counsel was, she simply laughed with complete confidence, accepted my case, and immediately got my case moving on the right track. Unlike opposing counsel in this case, Colleen is a legal professional with impeccable integrity and ethics; but not to be confused with someone who submits to bully tactics or shies away from confrontation in or out of the courtroom. In contrast, Ms. Haddow is emotionally intelligent and well versed in the rules of the court to effectively persuade and, if need be, compel cooperation from even the most difficult of personalities. In doing so, she also remained a steadfast, approachable, and responsive attorney (often responding to me within minutes), who consistently addressed my concerns, provided objective perspective, and gave absolute sound guidance amidst the evolving challenges within the case. In short, she kept me sane and grounded in arguably the most stressful and emotionally draining period of my life. In addition to her superior soft skills, Colleen also demonstrated unmatched expertise and experience in distilling and framing the key issues of my case (fully explaining the legalities), to include those I hadn't initially seen, understood, or considered. She proved invaluable in interpreting and exposing financial information, indiscretions, and activities. She was also proactive, strategic, anticipatory, and prepared always and on all fronts. I am convinced that she and her abilities alone are the REASON that ultimately resulted in my case outcome far surpassing my initial expectations from failed mediation, and resulting in a final settlement that exceeded my best-case scenario in court (albeit that she was fully prepared and willing to execute). Colleen saved me thousands in legal expenses, but more importantly, she helped me overcome a series of short-term losses in exchange for an overwhelming long-term gain in my journey to a new and better life. In the strongest terms possible, I highly recommend Colleen Haddow for all family litigation.

Due to ethical rules that govern lawyer client relationships, we cannot accept your request. As a matter of policy, this firm does not accept unsolicited email requests for representation on pro bono matters. As a result, we are not able to accept your request for representation in this matter. Horrible customer service and just people that only want to hell you if you have tons of money.

Teresa Cole achieved for me a fulfilling life post divorce by ensuring my financial stability in negotiations with my ex husband and his attorney. She was conscientious of how we spent our time so that I wasn’t wasting my funds on unnecessary talk and issues. She was professional, effective, and completed my complicated federal employee divorce in just 18 months. She knew the best mediators who helped get the job done. She helped in advising me for my future life plans. I highly recommend Teresa.

His professionalism, attention to detail, kindness and support throughout the process was top-notch. Eric is everywhere (on TV, in print, etc), but what made our company so happy with him is his responsiveness and his willingness to try and find solutions to our problems. We used other attorneys before who took the easy route, but Eric is always striving to find creative resolutions and give our company options that we were able to use. We continue to use Eric on a regular basis.

I thought he had more government contracts experience than he has. He's been around a lot but its a couple of years of this and a few years of that. He charged a lot for what I later learned was a pretty easy answer for someone with experience, then when I complained about the bill he promised to discount it and never did.

I can't seem to slow down on those smooth roads in southwestern Virginia. I didn't think an attorney could save me from yet another speeding ticket and points on my record, but Mr. Jackson was able to get my ticket reduced to improper equipment. This was especially important for me because in North Carolina, your license can be suspended for driving 71 mph in a 55. The fees were very reasonable; I probably saved money by not having to pay the hefty speeding fine and increase in insurance.

No representation whatsoever. During FOUR years it took him to "work" on my case, I gave him detailed evidence, cited and copied cases for him, months went by when I heard nothing from him, did not return calls, then sent a letter informing me of court date. In court, he brought up NONE of the evidence given to him, asked no questions except to me when he asked why I had taken $2500.00 from a joint checking account. Duh! That's what he required as retainer. In fact, he advised me to take out half the money in that account, which I did not do. He did not defend ANY of the questions asked to me. The judge made a ruling. I had not been told that court appearance would be final. To get paid (almost $5000.00), he had monies from a 401k sent to him, deducting his fee and giving me the remainder. DO NOT HIRE HIM!

I want to commend Whiteford, Taylor & Preston for being a full-service firm that could handle all of my business needs. While I first worked with an attorney in their Falls Church, VA office, I found I needed additional legal services and also worked with attorneys in WTP's Baltimore & Richmond offices. The scope of work covered a large tenant bankruptcy, property management, related court filings, and also new tenant lease negotiations. In all cases, I found their attorneys to be responsible and attentive to my multiple and diverse business needs. Thank you.

My case was for an annulment based on fraud and Ms. Wright took it head on. She explained legal strategies in a way that could be understood by someone without law experience and set realistic expectations for the outcome. She readied me for testimony by providing a list of questions and prepared answers to make sure I would remember to include all of the pertinent facts on the stand. It's easy to be nervous and forget, but since I studied her guide, I was able to focus on facts without rambling on a tangent. Unexpectedly, the judge announced my hearing would be completed on that day when two half-days were scheduled. Ms. Wright and I were blindsided because we expected to have time to prepare for cross examinations. Despite this challenge, she remained focused and on her feet for an entire day and didn't skip a beat. I could hardly keep my eyes open but she improvised, asked all the right questions and kept in the game for 6-1/2 hours. It was a long hard day. Ms. Wright thinks fast on her feet. She's sharp, strategic, focused, has a great memory and has a winning mindset. As a bonus, she is very easy to work with and maintains friendly professionalism. The annulment was granted! Ms. Wright made it happen and I am forever grateful that she agreed to represent me. I would refer her to anyone.

Ms. Wright returned my phone call within a couple of hours of my email from AVVO. Because I could not answer my phone right away, she left her cell phone number for me to return her call. I really appreciated her concern for my case and I will definitely call upon her again.

This Attorney would generally not return phone calls and emails. I literally pleaded with her to keep me up to date and informed, because I was so desperate about my legal matters, but she simply ignored my requests, except for a few isolated times. Once I fired her, she gave me a final bill, which was more expensive than I expected. During our initial one hour consultation, which I was charged for, she did not even have the court order paperwork printed out, which I sent to her prior to the meeting. So she had to take 5-8 minutes and print it out as I sat there waiting; and then she had to read it over. I was disappointed that she was not prepared for the meeting. By far the worst part was that this Attorney acknowledged that I am due the remainder of the retainer, but the she stopped communicating with me. She provided me with the invoice, which even stated that she still owes me, but she simply ignored all my communication attempts, including, to answer my phone calls, emails, and even personal messages left with the receptionist in her office. By the way, the Wright Law Firm, operated by Marcia Wright, has only one Attorney actively working there, which is Ms Wright herself. I was so hurt that she would refuse to give me the several hundred dollars back, since it was mid November, and Christmas was approaching. I could have used the money. It is now January and still not a peep from her.

We had previously retained another lawyer in the firm who has since retired. Obtained Jeanette Ojeda's email address from her receptionist and received an automated reply that she would be out of the office for one more day. Waited one more week for a reply. Nothing. Called the office again to verify that she was practicing and was seeing clients. Receptionist sent her a note with my contact information. Sent a second email detailing my need for a contract review and even offered a retainer if that were a concern. No response. How difficult would it have been to say "I'm busy and can't help"?

What an Intellectual Property Lawyer Can Do for You

An intellectual property (IP) lawyer specializes in protecting the rights related to creations of the mind, including inventions, designs, logos, brands, artistic works, and trade secrets. IP lawyers help clients secure legal rights to their intellectual property, enforce those rights, and defend against infringement claims. They can also assist with licensing agreements, negotiating royalties, and managing intellectual property portfolios.

Whether you're a business seeking to protect a trademark, an inventor patenting a new product, or an artist protecting your work from unauthorized use, an intellectual property lawyer ensures that your creations are legally safeguarded and helps you navigate the complex landscape of IP law.

When Should I Hire an Intellectual Property Lawyer?

Hiring an intellectual property lawyer is beneficial in many situations where you need to secure, protect, or defend your intellectual property rights. Key scenarios include:

  • Filing a patent: If you've invented a new product or process, a lawyer can help you apply for a patent and ensure the protection of your invention.
  • Trademarking a logo or brand name: To protect your business's brand identity, a lawyer can assist in trademarking logos, names, slogans, or symbols.
  • Copyright protection: If you’ve created an original work (e.g., a book, music, or software), a lawyer can help you register your copyright and ensure your rights are protected.
  • Trade secrets protection: For businesses with proprietary information, a lawyer can draft agreements to protect trade secrets and ensure they remain confidential.
  • Defending against infringement: If someone is using your intellectual property without permission, a lawyer can help you take legal action to stop the infringement and seek damages.
  • Licensing agreements: If you want to allow others to use your intellectual property for a fee, an IP lawyer can draft or negotiate licensing agreements that protect your interests.
  • IP portfolio management: If you have multiple forms of intellectual property, a lawyer can help you manage your IP portfolio, ensuring all assets are protected and strategically utilized.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help you avoid legal pitfalls and ensure that your intellectual property is adequately protected from the start.

What Does an Intellectual Property Lawyer Do?

An intellectual property lawyer provides a wide range of services to protect and enforce your intellectual property rights. They can:

  • File patents and trademarks: Helping you prepare and submit patent or trademark applications to protect your inventions, brands, or logos.
  • Register copyrights: Assisting with the registration of original creative works to ensure your rights are protected under copyright law.
  • Litigate infringement cases: Representing you in court if your intellectual property has been used without authorization or if you're accused of infringement.
  • Draft licensing agreements: Creating contracts that allow others to use your intellectual property while ensuring you retain control and receive appropriate compensation.
  • Manage IP portfolios: Helping businesses and individuals manage multiple forms of intellectual property, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets.
  • Conduct due diligence in business deals: Ensuring that intellectual property assets are properly valued and protected during mergers, acquisitions, or licensing agreements.
  • Monitor and enforce IP rights: Monitoring for potential infringement and taking legal action when necessary to protect your IP from unauthorized use.

How Are Intellectual Property Lawyers Paid?

Intellectual property lawyers typically charge for their services in different ways, depending on the complexity of the work and the type of intellectual property being protected. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For specific services such as filing a trademark or copyright application, many lawyers charge a flat fee that covers all the work required for that service.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex tasks, such as drafting licensing agreements or litigating infringement cases, lawyers may charge by the hour. Hourly rates vary depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Contingency fee: In some cases, particularly for IP litigation, a lawyer may work on a contingency basis, meaning they only get paid if they win or settle the case. Their fee would typically be a percentage of the settlement or damages awarded.
  • Retainer: For ongoing IP needs, some clients may pay a retainer fee upfront to secure the lawyer’s services, which the lawyer then bills against as they work on the case.

It’s essential to discuss fees and payment arrangements with your lawyer upfront to ensure there are no surprises.

How Much Does an Intellectual Property Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an intellectual property lawyer depends on the complexity of the case and the type of intellectual property involved. General cost estimates include:

  • Trademark registration: The cost of registering a trademark can range from $500 to $2,000, depending on the complexity of the application and whether there are any issues during the registration process.
  • Patent filing: Filing a patent is often more expensive, with costs ranging from $5,000 to $15,000 or more, depending on the type of patent (utility, design, etc.) and the complexity of the invention.
  • Copyright registration: Registering a copyright is usually less costly, with fees typically ranging from $300 to $1,500 for most creative works.
  • Litigation: If you’re involved in an IP dispute or infringement case, litigation can be costly, with fees ranging from $10,000 to hundreds of thousands of dollars, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Licensing agreements: Drafting or negotiating a licensing agreement can range from $1,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the terms and complexity of the agreement.

Always get a clear estimate of costs during your initial consultation to ensure that the services are within your budget.

Top Questions to Ask an Intellectual Property Lawyer

Before hiring an intellectual property lawyer, it’s essential to ask questions that will help you determine if they are the right fit for your case. Here are some key questions to ask:

  1. What experience do you have with intellectual property law?
Ensure that the lawyer has substantial experience with your specific type of intellectual property, whether it’s patents, trademarks, copyrights, or trade secrets.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or contingency, and get a clear estimate of what your case will cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success with my application or case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of the chances of successfully obtaining a patent, trademark, or copyright or winning an infringement case.
  4. How long will the process take?
Ask about the expected timeline for filing your application or resolving your dispute, as IP matters can sometimes take months or years to finalize.
  5. What steps will you take to protect my intellectual property?
Ask the lawyer how they will help ensure your intellectual property is fully protected and what strategies they use to enforce IP rights.
  6. Have you handled cases similar to mine?
If your case involves specific industries or technologies, ask whether the lawyer has worked with similar clients and what the outcomes were.

How to Check the Credibility of an Intellectual Property Lawyer

To ensure that you’re hiring a reputable intellectual property lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for specific IP experience: Check their website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in intellectual property law and have successfully handled cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what past clients have said about their experience with the lawyer.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their professionalism and success in handling IP matters.
  • Check for certifications or memberships: Membership in organizations like the International Trademark Association (INTA) or the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) can indicate expertise in intellectual property law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with an intellectual property lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant information and documents. Here’s what you should bring:

  • A detailed description of your invention, brand, or creative work: Be prepared to explain what you are seeking to protect, including any unique aspects or characteristics of your intellectual property.
  • Any existing IP registrations or applications: If you’ve already filed for trademarks, patents, or copyrights, bring copies of the relevant documents.
  • Information on potential infringers: If you are dealing with an infringement issue, provide details of the alleged infringer, including evidence of the infringement, such as images, documents, or correspondence.
  • Questions about the process: Write down any questions you have about protecting or enforcing your intellectual property rights, including timelines, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be clear about what you want to achieve, whether it’s securing a patent, protecting a brand, or enforcing your IP rights against unauthorized use.

Being prepared for your first consultation will help the lawyer assess your situation more effectively and provide you with the best possible advice for protecting your intellectual property.
