I cannot express enough gratitude for Jessica and Meredith and their incredible team for their outstanding support and expertise throughout my court case. From the very beginning, they were not only professional and knowledgeable but also deeply compassionate and understanding of my situation. Jessica and Meredith fought tirelessly on my behalf and ensured that every detail was handled with care and precision. Their dedication to my case was evident in every interaction, and they always made me feel supported and heard. The entire team was equally remarkable, always responsive, organized, and willing to go above and beyond to help. Thanks to their efforts, we achieved a settlement that exceeded my expectations. The outcome will make a significant difference in my life and my children’s lives, and I owe it all to Jessica’s hard work and determination. If you are looking for a lawyer who is not only highly skilled but also genuinely cares about her clients, I wholeheartedly recommend Jessica and Meredith. They are truly exceptional, and I feel so fortunate to have had them in my corner during this challenging time.

My experience with Jessica Ressler and her firm has been amazing! It is very difficult to find the delicate balance of not only an attorney that listens and hears you, but represents your best interest. I am been involved in an extremely complex and litigious battle. Without her caring yet determined approach, I am not quite sure if I would have been able to make it through.... Every step of the way, Jessica has been communicative, forthright, and available. I have always been made to feel heard, which is invaluable when going thru the complexities of such emotional and financial stress. Jessica is beyond brilliant, the hardest worker I know, and is so determined to fight for her clients best interests, my best interests. I am thrilled to have found her and her firm! Every single person in that office deserves more than 5 stars!!

I had a very frustrating, and potentially negatively life altering, experience with Ms. Ressler earlier this year. The error on her part cost my family time, frustration, and stress to myself and my children. I was advised to file a temporary order of protection which involved making claims against family members. Unbeknownst to me, Jessica Ressler has a general modus operandi of being an extremely aggressive attorney, regardless of the situation. Her tactics involve getting her clients temporary orders of protection, involving the police, and using false statements. For those who are not aware, these tactics often negatively impact children. She treats every case the same, and her reputation in the industry is well known as being overly aggressive to the point of being detrimental to her clients and their cases. Further, her strategy unnecessarily involves child protective services who are legally obligated to investigate each case, and each parent, regardless of the accusations made. Without going into significant personal detail, the filings I made under Ms. Ressler's guidance landed me in the cross hairs of CPS for no apparent reason. The result could have led to a permanent record, termination from my job, and an inability to be involved in some children's activities. When I pointed this out to Ms. Ressler, I was met with vague explanations and no real accountability, nor help to assist me from a legal standpoint. While initially she was attentive to my questions, once this occurred, her communication stopped instead of following up on ways to assist me, as though she signed off from my case. Ultimately, the CPS case was resolved without issue based on evidence provided by my family. It should be noted that Ms. Ressler was recently formally admonished in court for her tactics and procedures. As previously stated, her reputation amongst attorneys in the NYC metro area is well known, and not well regarded. I would not trust this lawyer with anything important and would highly caution others to do their due diligence before hiring her. I strongly suggest looking elsewhere for legal counsel.

If you're disabled or part of the LGBT community and you turn to these people for help you WILL be turned away after being lied to and promised help, and when it will be far too late to do anything about it to save yourself. NEVER TRUST THESE PEOPLE WITH ANYTHING OF IMPORTANCE. Last year I was living in Putnam County and barely escaped being trafficked, and HVLS turned me away after weeks of promising help me in court, only to finally abandon me at the last possible second. Now, I am living in Dutchess County in a black mold and asbestos infested slum house with a landlord who is stalking and harassing me, and the first thing AMANDA made sure to tell me was, because of THEIR negligence on my last case and my efforts to escalate it which were refused anyway, that I would probably not be helped this time. This is pure retaliation and it's illegal, but who is going to stand up to a bunch of lawyers for using their power to harm the people who trust them? ME. I have made it my goal to sue the State of New York and HVLS will absolutely be part of any future litigation due to the immense harm and suffering they have caused me mentally and physically. I TRUSTED THEM to do the right thing for once after how badly they treated me when I was nearly trafficked (and yes there is proof, Google Hunks and Hunnies Animal Sanctuary to see) and they responded by gaslighting me and threatening to retaliate against me. AGAIN. I will not let these people get away with doing this to me twice or to ANY other disabled/LGBT people when their entire purpose is supposed to be to help people like us. If I could find an attorney I would sue HVLS personally for ableism, discrimination, violating my rights, retaliation, negligence, and so much more. If anything, do not disclose that you're disabled or LGBT as they obviously use that information to prey upon vulnerable individuals and cause far more harm than they would if they simply didn't try to "help".

If you are headed for a difficult divorce and seeking compassionate, intelligent and competent representation, I highly recommend The Pappalardo Law Group. John Pappalardo and his associate, Judith Murphy worked diligently for me for over 5 years through an extremely contentious divorce. Despite the fact that my ex controlled all the marital assets and was willing to spend everything to destroy me, John and Judith stuck by me. My case was also very difficult as we had 4 different judges presiding due to the length of time it took to resolve. Two of the four judges were completely inexperienced and were blatantly incompetent. These circumstances made for a very challenging battle. During all of this, I felt that I had the best possible attorneys representing me. In an extremely emotional and soul crushing time, both John and Judith always made me feel like I was a person worth fighting for. Yet, John would tell me exactly what he thought, even if it wasn’t always what I wanted to hear. He is completely honest and told me what I needed to hear, giving the best possible advice. I thank them both for their hard work!

I am incredibly dissatisfied with the legal services provided by John Pappalardo and his team during my child custody case. They consistently ran up the bill with ineffective strategies and failed to properly guide me on the best course of action, resulting in significant financial strain and distress. Moreover, communication was severely lacking throughout the process, with my emails and calls often going unanswered for days. I felt like I was constantly kept in the dark about important developments in my case, and when I did receive updates, they were vague and unhelpful. Additionally, the level of professionalism exhibited by John Pappalardo and his team left much to be desired. I often felt dismissed and belittled whenever I raised concerns or asked for clarification on legal matters. Overall, I would not recommend John Pappalardo's legal services to anyone in need of competent and reliable representation. My experience with his firm was nothing short of a nightmare, and I am left feeling extremely disappointed and let down. In conclusion, I strongly advise against utilizing John Pappalardo's services for child custody cases. Their poor communication, inadequate preparation, and lack of effectiveness in the courtroom only served to heighten stress and financial burden. They do not prioritize or protect the well-being of the children and struggle to handle cases involving domestic abuse or high-conflict custody disputes.

The Poppalardo Law group You never think one day you’ll need to go through the process of fighting for custody of your children. Unfortunately that day came me. I found myself in a love-less relationship with an unfaithful partner who I shared 2 beautiful children with. I felt helpless because you always think the law favors the mother in most cases. Being an extremely involved father who coached and was very active in my children’s life, I knew I didn’t want to be the typical every-other-weekend warrior father, I had to fight for my children. I was referred to The Pappalardo Law group from a friend of a friend who was also an attorney in Connecticut. She was very confident that this was the best Law Firm for my situation. I reluctantly made the call and set up the appointment. Turned out to be one of the best most important decisions I’ve ever made. John Pappalardo assigned his associate Sam to my my case and from day one they both worked tirelessly to understand our circumstances and put together an amazing case to present to the court. It was a long stressful road but being able to be in my children’s life on a day to day basis made the tough journey worth it. Sam was an amazing partner through all of this even going on maternity leave, having a baby and still returning to my case to close it out. She was extremely attentive and the communication always made me feel like I was a priority. Nobody ever wants to go through this process in life but if you find yourself in a situation where you’re fighting to keep your children in your life, I would Highly recommend reaching out and putting your trust in The Poppalardo Law Group.

What an Intellectual Property Lawyer Can Do for You

An intellectual property (IP) lawyer specializes in protecting the rights related to creations of the mind, including inventions, designs, logos, brands, artistic works, and trade secrets. IP lawyers help clients secure legal rights to their intellectual property, enforce those rights, and defend against infringement claims. They can also assist with licensing agreements, negotiating royalties, and managing intellectual property portfolios.

Whether you're a business seeking to protect a trademark, an inventor patenting a new product, or an artist protecting your work from unauthorized use, an intellectual property lawyer ensures that your creations are legally safeguarded and helps you navigate the complex landscape of IP law.

When Should I Hire an Intellectual Property Lawyer?

Hiring an intellectual property lawyer is beneficial in many situations where you need to secure, protect, or defend your intellectual property rights. Key scenarios include:

  • Filing a patent: If you've invented a new product or process, a lawyer can help you apply for a patent and ensure the protection of your invention.
  • Trademarking a logo or brand name: To protect your business's brand identity, a lawyer can assist in trademarking logos, names, slogans, or symbols.
  • Copyright protection: If you’ve created an original work (e.g., a book, music, or software), a lawyer can help you register your copyright and ensure your rights are protected.
  • Trade secrets protection: For businesses with proprietary information, a lawyer can draft agreements to protect trade secrets and ensure they remain confidential.
  • Defending against infringement: If someone is using your intellectual property without permission, a lawyer can help you take legal action to stop the infringement and seek damages.
  • Licensing agreements: If you want to allow others to use your intellectual property for a fee, an IP lawyer can draft or negotiate licensing agreements that protect your interests.
  • IP portfolio management: If you have multiple forms of intellectual property, a lawyer can help you manage your IP portfolio, ensuring all assets are protected and strategically utilized.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help you avoid legal pitfalls and ensure that your intellectual property is adequately protected from the start.

What Does an Intellectual Property Lawyer Do?

An intellectual property lawyer provides a wide range of services to protect and enforce your intellectual property rights. They can:

  • File patents and trademarks: Helping you prepare and submit patent or trademark applications to protect your inventions, brands, or logos.
  • Register copyrights: Assisting with the registration of original creative works to ensure your rights are protected under copyright law.
  • Litigate infringement cases: Representing you in court if your intellectual property has been used without authorization or if you're accused of infringement.
  • Draft licensing agreements: Creating contracts that allow others to use your intellectual property while ensuring you retain control and receive appropriate compensation.
  • Manage IP portfolios: Helping businesses and individuals manage multiple forms of intellectual property, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets.
  • Conduct due diligence in business deals: Ensuring that intellectual property assets are properly valued and protected during mergers, acquisitions, or licensing agreements.
  • Monitor and enforce IP rights: Monitoring for potential infringement and taking legal action when necessary to protect your IP from unauthorized use.

How Are Intellectual Property Lawyers Paid?

Intellectual property lawyers typically charge for their services in different ways, depending on the complexity of the work and the type of intellectual property being protected. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For specific services such as filing a trademark or copyright application, many lawyers charge a flat fee that covers all the work required for that service.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex tasks, such as drafting licensing agreements or litigating infringement cases, lawyers may charge by the hour. Hourly rates vary depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Contingency fee: In some cases, particularly for IP litigation, a lawyer may work on a contingency basis, meaning they only get paid if they win or settle the case. Their fee would typically be a percentage of the settlement or damages awarded.
  • Retainer: For ongoing IP needs, some clients may pay a retainer fee upfront to secure the lawyer’s services, which the lawyer then bills against as they work on the case.

It’s essential to discuss fees and payment arrangements with your lawyer upfront to ensure there are no surprises.

How Much Does an Intellectual Property Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an intellectual property lawyer depends on the complexity of the case and the type of intellectual property involved. General cost estimates include:

  • Trademark registration: The cost of registering a trademark can range from $500 to $2,000, depending on the complexity of the application and whether there are any issues during the registration process.
  • Patent filing: Filing a patent is often more expensive, with costs ranging from $5,000 to $15,000 or more, depending on the type of patent (utility, design, etc.) and the complexity of the invention.
  • Copyright registration: Registering a copyright is usually less costly, with fees typically ranging from $300 to $1,500 for most creative works.
  • Litigation: If you’re involved in an IP dispute or infringement case, litigation can be costly, with fees ranging from $10,000 to hundreds of thousands of dollars, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Licensing agreements: Drafting or negotiating a licensing agreement can range from $1,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the terms and complexity of the agreement.

Always get a clear estimate of costs during your initial consultation to ensure that the services are within your budget.

Top Questions to Ask an Intellectual Property Lawyer

Before hiring an intellectual property lawyer, it’s essential to ask questions that will help you determine if they are the right fit for your case. Here are some key questions to ask:

  1. What experience do you have with intellectual property law?
Ensure that the lawyer has substantial experience with your specific type of intellectual property, whether it’s patents, trademarks, copyrights, or trade secrets.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or contingency, and get a clear estimate of what your case will cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success with my application or case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of the chances of successfully obtaining a patent, trademark, or copyright or winning an infringement case.
  4. How long will the process take?
Ask about the expected timeline for filing your application or resolving your dispute, as IP matters can sometimes take months or years to finalize.
  5. What steps will you take to protect my intellectual property?
Ask the lawyer how they will help ensure your intellectual property is fully protected and what strategies they use to enforce IP rights.
  6. Have you handled cases similar to mine?
If your case involves specific industries or technologies, ask whether the lawyer has worked with similar clients and what the outcomes were.

How to Check the Credibility of an Intellectual Property Lawyer

To ensure that you’re hiring a reputable intellectual property lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for specific IP experience: Check their website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in intellectual property law and have successfully handled cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what past clients have said about their experience with the lawyer.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their professionalism and success in handling IP matters.
  • Check for certifications or memberships: Membership in organizations like the International Trademark Association (INTA) or the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) can indicate expertise in intellectual property law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with an intellectual property lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant information and documents. Here’s what you should bring:

  • A detailed description of your invention, brand, or creative work: Be prepared to explain what you are seeking to protect, including any unique aspects or characteristics of your intellectual property.
  • Any existing IP registrations or applications: If you’ve already filed for trademarks, patents, or copyrights, bring copies of the relevant documents.
  • Information on potential infringers: If you are dealing with an infringement issue, provide details of the alleged infringer, including evidence of the infringement, such as images, documents, or correspondence.
  • Questions about the process: Write down any questions you have about protecting or enforcing your intellectual property rights, including timelines, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be clear about what you want to achieve, whether it’s securing a patent, protecting a brand, or enforcing your IP rights against unauthorized use.

Being prepared for your first consultation will help the lawyer assess your situation more effectively and provide you with the best possible advice for protecting your intellectual property.
