Everyone has a horror story about an attorney they've had and for me, this Attorney proved there is no justice in Arkansas. If you have a felony criminal charge and don't have enough money for John Wesley Hall, it's fair to say your screwed!!! Even told us once we didn't have to show up in court when we actually were supposed appear. This resulted in John Anderson advising us to "lay low" for the weekend because we were issued felony warrants that couldn't be recalled until the following Monday!! My husband was incarcerated for 33 months and he was told that he would get out in 18 months. Yes, I avoided jail time for so far but am basically chained to the door with 8 yrs probation time. I was also told they would file a lawsuit after trial but when it came time for that they ignored my calls as long as they could then when I requested my file I was told to sign a paper agreeing that they recused before they would give me my files back.

I agree with Kurt! These guys did the same thing to me!! All positive for a year leading up to trial. Paid $12,000.00 and then on the day we were supposed to argue for suppression he got scared I guess so he said it was in our best interest to take a plea bargain because the judge never granted anyone else a suppression and we probably wouldn't be the first. They gave us approx. 10 mins to decide and since he was no longer confident what was I supposed to do? Horrible about returning calls or answering questions they are not seeking justice for victims of crooked police and abuse of power! They won't stand up for you once it goes to trial!! If you have a criminal case- save your money and hire John Wesley Hall instead. 🤬

Legal Aid of Arkansas has an application for Domestic Violence, yet they do not help with anything criminal (at least that is my understanding) and that should have been my first red flag. I applied for assistance as I have no income, and had recently discovered that victims of CSA can make cases against their abusers in Arkansas until the age of 50. I honestly applied because while I have a BSW degree, and want to pursue a law degree in the future, I can readily say I know next to nothing when it comes to, well, legal aid! So, this being said, I thought I could at least receive a pointer from Legal Aid of Arkansas as to where I should go, and to be fair I received one - i.e. "get a private attorney, we can't help". I had called to check up on my application and the woman who answered was literally laughing on the other end. Laughing! And I could not tell if it was because of filling out the incorrect application, or the content of my application, or if someone was goofing off in the office next to her. She laughed for a good solid three minutes, chuckling through her conversation with me. She even told me she was, and I quote "losing my mind over here" - to which I replied trying to be kind "boy to I understand that!". She asked if I needed an Order of Protection (this must be the only DV oriented thing they can provide but- is that not a criminal instance? the line of civil and criminal is nuanced as heck). She then put me on hold for a while then came back and gave me the news I mentioned above. Then, pitifully, as if saying "poor you" told me to "try and enjoy the rest of your day". I have been working up the courage to go after my childhood abusers and reached out to Legal Aid of Arkansas and they gave me very unprofessional service and absolutely no direction to go in. I do not actually know what they are there for if again, they have a domestic violence application that you can literally fill out fully, but can't, don't or won't(?) help with criminal things. Boy, when I get that JD degree in the future (gotta have goals right?) I fully plan to pursue the betterment of services of this kind for all incomes, all situations and all demographics. Justice is frilly, lacey, and moot if justice cannot, or doesn't bother to serve everyone. Or at the very least, throw you a tangible option to pursue your needs. I am back to square one and with courage evermore- I hope for anyone in a similar situation to mine that you hang onto your courage and to press into your goals. You are not alone no matter how it may feel sometimes.

Paul Ford was a beast in court! He was extremely aggressive I’m my defense and I didn’t have to say a word before all my charges were dismissed. Stand up guy that doesn’t cheerlead. He tells you what to expect from step one. I’ve recommended him to everybody I know.

Attorney Paul N. Ford has not failed me yet! He (Attorney Paul N. Ford) and others has just recently started on my case, and I appreciate so far his/their endeavor to do what is require, and do it effectively and well. Attorney Paul N. Ford was recommended to me by another Attorney whose Law Firm was over an hundred miles away. He (the Attorney miles away) stated to me that Paul N. Ford or Ford and Cook Law Firm was one of the Best Law Firm nearest to my county. And I thank God for that great recommendation, that prompt me to place a call to Attorney Paul N. I used Paul Ford several years ago in a medical malpractice case and right before the time was up he decided he couldnt do it and instructed me to find someone else. Dealing with a death from malpractice then having to deal with an atty who pushed the limits was too much. I had to just drop the case and was terribly upset over the whole situation.

I hired her for a custody battle I was having with my ex & for our first meeting she came to my house bringing her kid & just "assumed" that I could have my sons keep him busy playing. She NOT ONCE did anything we had discussed going into the court room & saying/doing!!In court when she was supposed to be defending me but she NEVER did AT ALL! Just stood at the podium & basically AGREED to EVERYTHING(w/o even asking me) my P.O.S ex was doing & just like FROZE when it came time to speak up about everything that we had planned & decided! After court my grandfather was FURIOUS with how she treated him when he was trying to ask her why she wasn't doing anything.Very rudely she just stuck her hand up to his face & continued to tell us the same thing the judge had already said to us & raising her voice to speak over him!We paid her $1500 to do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for us in court!!

I saw the previous review and couldn't believe it. Rebecca was great for me in my custody case. She turned chaos into order. She made my child's father look like an idiot on the stand. I would definitely recommend her.

She sat on my custody case allowing my child's mother enough time to leave the state and ruin any chance of quality time with my son. I had to bombard her with emails just for her to start the paternity test, by then my childs mother left the state. Never seemed to care or have interest. I have an email trail to prove this negligence as well. ended up firing her after almost a year if case delays just to hire another worthless attorney. At least he got it to court even though he did very little to defend me. Northeast Arkansas in general has some serious ethics issues with local attorneys. even someone fresh from law school would be superior to most offerings in the area. In short, Ms. Worsham is directly responsible for an easily avoidable negative outcome in my case. Her neglegence took me from every other week with my son to every other moth at best.

I had a utility locate to mark for the city that went across their property. I was parked on their property for no more than 3 minutes. Some lady walked up to me, (snobby lawyer type) asked me what I was doing there, and that I wasn't supposed to be going past the private parking signs. She walked off before I could inform her that her office bordered a utility easement, and the law allows me to access said easement, regardless if she likes it or not. If she doesn't know a simple law like that, and wants to be a see you next Tuesday about it, how do you think she'll do in court?

Terry has been representing me for years and I’ve seen nothing but exceptional work from him. If you want a lawyer that will listen to you and hear you but at the same time be truthful with you and also get you the least possible time…. Then this is the guy. I speak from many years of experience using Terry in various counties and also several different types of cases. He is amongst the best. I’m not sure who the idiots were that gave negative reviews but don’t listen to them!

I used Terry in a felony criminal case. Besides one offer Terry suggested I take them all. Luckily I did not take his advice to accept a felony plea and ended up with a misdemeanor. I can only speak for myself but I would use a public defender before using Terry again.

Susan never returned my phone calls. I couldn't even get her assistant to find out information and get back with me. I had to call repeatedly to try and get information on where we stood with my divorce. I was charged for every little thing that she did including copies. I requested my file and she charged me $86 just to copy an interrogatory. And then when I got it and looked through it, what I had written and given to her to dispute some answers was not included. When my current attorney called to get those answers, she refused to give them. She was very unprofessional and totally unresponsive.

After waiting 3 months to hear back from Susan about my divorce I went to the courthouse in my county to find out if anything had been filed yet. Apparently 3 months earlier when I had hired her and paid for her services she went to the courthouse to file but did not have the correct paperwork and just never went back. No wonder I had could never get her on the phone or get a call back. For 3 months I was under the impression my divorce was being handled when in fact it had never even been filed. If you want an attorney that is apparently never in the office, never returns phone calls, and doesnt do what you hire her for then she is your attorney.

I read both reviews of this attorney and from my experience, I agree with the fact that this attorney can't argue her way out of a paper sack. She is disorganized, weak in her approach, far too reactionary, and does more to tear families apart than bring them together. Be careful with this one and if you hire her, please know you've been made aware ahead of time. Don't take a risk on this one. There are far better attorneys.

What a Litigation Lawyer Can Do for You

A litigation lawyer specializes in representing individuals, businesses, or organizations involved in legal disputes. Whether you're the one filing a lawsuit or you're being sued, a litigation attorney will advocate on your behalf throughout the entire legal process. Their goal is to resolve disputes, either through negotiation, settlement, or trial. Litigation lawyers can help with a wide range of disputes, including contract disagreements, real estate issues, employment disputes, personal injury claims, and more.

Litigation lawyers provide strategic legal advice and manage all aspects of your case, from filing motions to representing you in court, ensuring that your rights are protected and that you have the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome.

When Should I Hire a Litigation Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a litigation lawyer if you're involved in a legal dispute that you cannot resolve on your own. Common situations include:

  • Breach of contract disputes: If a party to a contract fails to fulfill their obligations, a litigation lawyer can help you seek damages or enforce the agreement.
  • Business disputes: Litigation lawyers can represent you in cases of partnership disagreements, intellectual property disputes, or business fraud.
  • Employment disputes: If you're facing issues like wrongful termination, workplace discrimination, or wage disputes, a litigation lawyer can help resolve these matters through negotiation or court action.
  • Personal injury claims: If you've been injured due to someone else's negligence and are seeking compensation, a litigation attorney can help you pursue your case.
  • Real estate or property disputes: When there are conflicts over property ownership, boundary issues, or lease agreements, a litigation lawyer can assist in resolving the dispute.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process is beneficial, especially if a lawsuit seems imminent or you have already been served with legal documents.

What Does a Litigation Lawyer Do?

A litigation lawyer handles all aspects of your case, from the initial investigation to the trial and even the appeals process, if necessary. Their role includes:

  • Case assessment and investigation: Analyzing the facts of your case and advising whether it’s worth pursuing or defending.
  • Pleadings and motions: Drafting and filing documents to initiate or respond to a lawsuit, including complaints, motions to dismiss, and answers.
  • Discovery: Gathering evidence, including depositions, interrogatories, and document requests, to build your case.
  • Negotiations and settlement discussions: Attempting to resolve disputes through mediation, arbitration, or settlement talks before going to trial.
  • Trial representation: Presenting your case in court, examining witnesses, introducing evidence, and making legal arguments before a judge or jury.
  • Appeals: If necessary, filing appeals to challenge or defend the outcome of the trial.

Litigation lawyers are also skilled negotiators and often work to resolve disputes outside of court to save time, money, and stress for their clients.

How Are Litigation Lawyers Paid?

Litigation lawyers typically use a variety of fee structures depending on the type of case, the complexity of the legal matter, and the financial circumstances of the client. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Many litigation attorneys charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and geographic location.
  • Flat fees: For specific, predictable legal tasks (such as filing a motion), lawyers may offer a flat fee.
  • Contingency fees: In personal injury or other cases where you seek damages, a lawyer may work on a contingency basis, taking a percentage of the settlement or award if you win.
  • Retainer: Some clients pay a retainer fee upfront to secure ongoing legal services. The lawyer then bills against this retainer as work is done.

The exact structure should be discussed in the initial consultation to ensure you understand how and when you'll be charged.

How Much Does a Litigation Lawyer Cost?

The cost of a litigation lawyer varies significantly depending on the nature of the dispute and the lawyer’s experience. Factors affecting the cost include:

  • The complexity of the case: More complex litigation involving extensive discovery, expert witnesses, or multi-party suits typically costs more.
  • Time spent: Litigation cases can be time-consuming, especially if they go to trial. The longer the case, the higher the legal fees.
  • Type of fee arrangement: Hourly rates can range from $200 to over $1,000 per hour, depending on the lawyer’s reputation and location. Contingency fees generally range from 25% to 40% of the settlement or award.
  • Stage of litigation: Cases that settle early in the process are often less expensive than those that proceed to trial or appeal.

It’s crucial to ask about cost estimates during your initial consultation to avoid surprises.

Top Questions to Ask a Litigation Lawyer

Before hiring a litigation lawyer, it's essential to ask key questions to ensure you're choosing the right representation:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Ensure that the lawyer has experience handling your specific type of dispute, whether it's a contract issue, personal injury, or business matter.
  2. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case's strengths, weaknesses, and the likelihood of success.
  3. What is your fee structure?
Clarify how you'll be charged, whether by the hour, a flat fee, or on a contingency basis.
  4. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it's hard to predict, an experienced lawyer can give you a rough estimate based on similar cases.
  5. How often do you settle cases versus going to trial?
Some lawyers are more inclined to settle, while others may be more experienced in the courtroom. It’s important to understand their strategy.
  6. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Some lawyers prefer aggressive litigation, while others focus on settlement or mediation. Choose one whose approach aligns with your goals.

How to Check the Credibility of a Litigation Lawyer

To verify a litigation lawyer’s credibility, consider the following steps:

  • Check bar association records: Ensure the lawyer is in good standing with the state bar and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Online reviews can provide insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and track record.
  • Look for litigation experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they have handled cases like yours and have a record of success.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer to provide references from past clients who can speak to their effectiveness and approach.
  • Research their trial experience: If your case is likely to go to trial, ensure the lawyer has a history of courtroom success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make your first consultation with a litigation lawyer productive, you should prepare the following:

  • A clear outline of the dispute: Provide a timeline and key details about the legal issue you're facing.
  • Any relevant documents: Bring contracts, emails, letters, or any other documentation that pertains to the case.
  • A list of key players: Provide the names of individuals or companies involved in the dispute.
  • Questions about fees and the litigation process: Make sure you understand how the lawyer plans to approach your case and how you will be charged.
  • Your goals and expectations: Be clear about what outcome you're hoping for, whether it's a settlement, compensation, or another resolution.

By coming prepared, you can ensure that your initial meeting with the lawyer is both efficient and insightful, giving you a better sense of how to proceed with your case.
