I am impressed! I cannot express my gratitude for the Law Office of Mr. Kirk Freeman. Kirk along with his kind, comforting knowledgeable staff, absolutely will not allow the County, LPD or anyone along the way to be bullies or make their own rules as they go without severe consequences. From the moment I first spoke to Kirk he has been diligently addressing my situations and my concerns. Kirk dove into my case from the highest diving board in the shallowest of waters unscathed, only to continue to dive deeper. As we all know Tippecanoe County and most (not all) other attorneys are being social with high priced black label the rocks & whacking balls together so either way the client is screwed. Meanwhile the prosecutor and the hired attorney high five each other and say “we let this one go, the next one we max him out!” How disgusting, this isn’t fair justice. However, This is Tippecanoe county. They do as they wish, and do not bat an eye at whomever they drag through the mud along the way. KIRK FREEMAN WILL STAND UP FOR YOU!! He isn’t golfing and drinking with his colleagues. He isn’t impressed with money, the notoriety, nor the status quo that comes along with being an attorney. He is extremely knowledgeable and can find loopholes, errors and mistakes(sometimes that’s all u need to get a case dismissed) Most importantly Kirk is not intimidated by the corrupt system. KIRK IS ONE OF THE GREATEST, he became and attorney for all the right reasons, and that in itself is massively different from most. He fights for justice, for your rights, for fair treatment, and isn’t worried about who he pisses off in the process. I can tell you from my own experience and perspective, after consulting with dozens and that’s not a stretch, dozens of attorneys in about a 10 month span, Kirk is the only one who listened to, heard me and instantly started the battle. When all others simply decided they didn’t want to get involved. As they were hesitant and possibly just intimidated to go against their “friends” at the county court house and/or LPD in fear of losing those relationships. If you’re sick of being tossed around and looked at like another nothing criminal, while sitting at some high priced swanky attorneys office, take my advice and run with it. Hire Kirk Freeman, regardless of situation or price. After all, what is the price tag on your name, freedom, dignity and security. Tell Mr. Kirk Freeman, Rachel Devine sent you! You'll be glad you did.

Wish I could give 0 stars. It's a debt collections place so, clearly, they won't get many positive reviews. My personal experience for this though, is I have been paying for the past couple years every month on time, even early (even went in person a couple times and paid a month in advance and talked with them about advancing it). I got a letter threatening my work pay, and them monitoring my job status. I have proof in receipts they give from the office and online payments of it all, and so should they (hopefully). I found the lawyers name and emailed him stating I was worried if there was an issue and was confused as to why I received this, because I have kept up with everything needed, even months early. I also stated there was proof in the receipts I was given and is in their records, and also on the website. He then only responded that I haven't been doing the agreed upon terms and they will continue to monitor my job; he clearly didn't care to look into it. I know I have nothing to worry about since I've been paying what was agreed and will continue to, and have proof of it all. It was just so uncomfortable, not professional at all, and made me gather every proof I had just in case and I shouldn't have to do that. Reading other reviews, it seems intimidation is a key method for them.

My wife and I was charged in Pulaski County. We hired Dale Starks. We gave him $4000 in cash. I fired him after a couple of weeks of him being my attorney due to lack of movement on his end. I never received any of my money back. My wife just got a final bill of $3435. He is not a great attorney two weeks before trial. He was in Argentina. It is not our fault that he cannot communicate with the prosecution. He waited till the last week of trial to hurry up and try to get a last-minute plea agreement. Two out of the five co-defendants had public defenders and got a better deal. If you guys get in trouble in pulaski county, please do not hire Dale Stark. You will regret it. he is a very money hungry attorney.

Ms. Keefe represents everything you DO NOT WANT IN YOUR ATTORNEY. She is slow, disorganized, negligent and above all she is INCOMPETENT. If she had the goal of intentionally sabotaging my case, she would not have been able to do a better job. She made so many mistakes and overlooked so many important case-altering details. Seeing her performance in the courtroom, where she came completely unprepared, I was forced to settle on unfavorable terms due to the complete absence of Ms. Keefe’s help and support despite having paid her legal fees in full. A few months later I went to see her with a list of her mistakes and overlooked details. I believed she owed me an explanation of why she failed me. I had to make up a reason for my visit (think billable hours!) as I could tell she did not want to see me. At that meeting, instead of owning up to her mistakes and negligence to which I had proof in my hand, Ms. Keefe came up with laughable ridiculous explanations, some of which were contradicting each other! Upon returning home, I received an email from her containing the following paragraph: "The reason I asked ahead of time what you wanted to discuss today was so that I could review my file before you got here, so that I could prepare and respond. Obviously, when you told me you wanted to ask about a modification of support, I did not review my file on the issues you raised today. It may take a while because of my schedule, but I will go back and refresh my recollection. Since you wanted to meet with me in person, I’m hoping you will do me the same service if I ask to meet you in person. But I won’t mislead you on my purpose. I will be in touch in the next few months." This email was sent to me ONE YEAR AGO, on October 6, 2019. Since then I have made numerous attempts to get in touch with Ms. Keefe but she ignores my attempts and does not communicate with me. I am still open to hear her out. If she meets with me as promised, I will revise my review. If she provides me with a reasonable explanation of why she failed my case, I will publish an apology to her. However, if this review is still up, then one should think why an attorney would lie and make a promise she does not intend to keep; why an attorney would hide from her long term client and risk having this review up if her conscience is clear?! Think about that before hiring her - do you really want to have an attorney who lacks not only competence but also integrity, honesty and decency? Ms. Keefe, if my claims are wrong, if you did not fail me, if you did not make mistakes, if you did not overlook important details, you have the power to get this review down and have me apologize to you by just proving me wrong. Why don't you take that chance?! Have some integrity, keep your promise and answer my questions. That’s the least you could do after failing my case. You failed as an attorney. Don't fail as a human being.

Hiring Ms. Keefe, from the Law Office of Maureen T. Keefe, was the biggest mistake of my life. She let me down in every possible way. Her work ethic was slow, inefficient, sloppy, disorganized, unethical and dishonest. Due to the long drawn out nature of my case, Ms. Keefe had ample time to look over every aspect of documentation that was made available to her but she failed to study any of these documents. She made so many mistakes. For example, she sent an agreement that was missing the most crucial part to the opposing party to be SIGNED. When I confronted her about this missing paragraph, she simply replied "it was a draft". A draft does not go on for signature. The missing vital component to the opposing party was a gross oversight that could have resulted in an even greater financial loss for my case. I cannot believe that an attorney that has been practicing law for 32 years could be so careless and irresponsible. She continued to overcharge me based on our initial contract and agreed upon rate. When I voiced my concerns to her on these overcharges, her response was that “if the judge orders the other party to pay the most of [your] legal expenses then it [the overcharge] won't hurt you”. Who pays Ms. Keefe’s fee should not dictate how much in overcharges Ms. Keefe invoices for, nor should this be her legal advice when confronted on addressing a discrepancy in a contracted rate. After my case was settled, I went to speak with her on my concerns on her lack of professionalism and how it hindered the outcome of my case. Her only explanation was that the final hearing went badly because "it was all political - the judge is democrat and I am republican" and "the judge is a friend of the opposing counsel". I did not inquire about why the final hearing ended in a negative outcome. My inquiry was why Ms. Keefe made so many mistakes. I have documentation that proves Ms. Keefe’s poor judgement and ill work ethic, all of which cannot be explained by someone’s political affiliation. At the end of our meeting to discuss her lack in judgement, she asked to be given time to review her notes and that she would get back to me with answers. To date, I have tried multiple attempts to reach Ms. Keefe, after providing a months’ worth of time to review my case. She is no longer answering my attempts to meet again to discuss my case. I feel that Ms. Keefe is intentionally ignoring me and does not plan to discuss my case any further. I find this to be completely unprofessional and feel that Ms. Keefe was simply using my case as a means of making a profit for herself only.

Maureen Keefe is an awesome Attorney. Maureen meets all the qualities that you would want from an Attorney representing you. She was my crimminal court Attorney. She knows all the ends and outs of the justice system. She also takes the time out to go with you to presentencing. She has loyalty and respect for you as a client and person. She has great experience representing people with a mental illness. Alot of Attorneys don't have experience in that area of the courts. She really works hard to make sure her client " DOESN'T GET SCREWED" by anyone. She makes sure you get the help that you need while you are trying to help yourself get well. You also gain a friend for life. Her faith is very strong! She doesn't tell you things that you want to hear. Very straight forward Attorney. She has common sense, very smart, and she's a very strong woman. Don't get in her way!

I hired this attorney under the assumption he was another reputable attorney with a similar name. His office staff mislead me, and once I paid my retainer and realized it was not the attorney I thought I hired, they refused to refund. He was late to my hearings, and disheveled and unprofessional. I was dragged out too long with no answered calls, etc. Be cautious. I then hired the appropriate attorney and my case was handled professionally and in a timely manner.

When I first hired her, Meghan was great! Confident and seemd to have a plan for my case. Then she just stopped...everything. Suddently she stopped talking to me or calling me back at all or taking my calls, even phone calls we scheduled ahead of time, and would not return emails or calls ever. I asked her to take herself off of my case but she never responded to that either and never filed the papers so she still shows up as my lawyer. Ver disappointed.

Megan never had time to meet or talk with me, and when we met with opposing counsel for a settlement agreement, she did not advise me or let me know what were my options were—because of this I lost everything. She admitted the next day that things fell through the cracks from her end, and that she needed to hurry things up because she needed to prepare for court. Is that working in the best interest of your client? Then, one year later I get a bill for $8,000. Office is very unorganized. Megan should stop practicing law as to not ruin people’s lives.

I hired Kelli Young because I was trying to protect my child from his abusive father. If you are having to hire a lawyer to begin with, then it's probably a terrible time in your life. It was like pulling teeth to get her to communicate with me, and when she did she was sending documents that I had to constantly correct her - like NAMES and dates of birth or inconsistent details. She is one of the most incompetent lawyers I have ever had the misfortune to work with. All she cared about was payment, and even though we paid our bills on time, she decided in the midst of our case that she didn't want to work on it any longer. DO NOT HIRE!!!!

Kelli was my attorney as I was going through my divorce in 2014-15 and the hectic time shortly after 2016-17. Her expertise in family law truly shows and I would recommend her to anyone facing a similar situation.

Kelli was my attorney for over a year in a personal injury case. During this time, I repeatedly attempted to touch base with her to stay abreast on the details. For some reason, after never hearing from her, i had an inkling that she was not putting any time into my case. I then began calling her secretary who assured me that she was relaying my messages to Kelli young, and asked that my calls be returned. However, Kelli never bothered to return any of my calls. After over a year and a half without any reasonable, or just cause, in the 11th hour, she decided that she did not wish to continue her representation. She then had her secretary to contact me to pick-up my file. She too, offered no explanation. I first assumed that they had received an offer, but that was not the case. I suddenly was left to search for another attorney at the last minute; before the statute of limitations ran out. Thank goodness I found a reputable attorney just in time to take over the case. Within 6 months, the new attorney got me a nice size settlement. He worked diligently, and did more work in that short time than Kelli did in almost two years. The truth of the matter is that she was simply too lazy to work. She's a joke & not qualified to represent a caged hamster. To this day, she never extended any common courtesy as to provide an explaination. I feel that i deserved that much at the very least. Don't waste your time with this attorney. You will only regret it. No need to post my name. She knows exactly who I am. Too bad they dont offer a zero score; as that is exactly what I rate her.

I asked repeatedly about the lawsuit because he said there was a statue of limitations on it but he never filed so I kept contacting his paralegal about what was going on with my lawsuit or the return of some of my money and he just kept putting me off and never returning my calls then today I receive a paper from the courts saying he removed himself from my case. He is stealing from the poor people to make himself rich it's not fair he is not a professional he is all talk and no show I would not recommend him to anyone and anyone that reads this we should all come together and get rid of his law firm all together. Me and my fiancé hired Rolin for my son. He doesn’t think we lost but after court, it was pretty devastating. He didn’t ask the questions he was supposed to so the judge would know what was going on. He was late then when I called his secretary looking for him, she said he just pulled up and he just let her know the judge was going to be late. I said I feel like he should be in here letting us know but instead he was in his truck playing games on his phone, when he finally came in, he only briefed us for five minutes. He didn’t ask the right questions. My son did not know what to say so the judge didn’t feel like it was imperative they not live in the Homeless Shelter. With his jobless mother. We finally get done. I’ll let him know how to Sleeze that we are with the results. He said we are going to get a final bill, but he would zero that out because it was not our fault that the judge was late today. I get a call from him, letting me know That he’s not happy on how I spoke to the paralegal on how to please I am with everything that he did we paid him $2500 and we never met with him in person. Talk to him twice on the phone and we were lucky if the paralegal answered an email , so he said since he’s not gonna go by his word, he’s gonna go by the contract and charge us the additional $633 do not use him

Ambulance chaser, only looking for quick settlement. Exactly what it says. He will drag your case on for years and literally do nothing but file extensions and very little work. He will settle for nothing just to move on from your case to the next. He's a turn and burn lawyer. When you go to consult with him he's going to promise you anything to get your case. I soon got very frustrated after years and had to fire Walter Alvarez and hire an actual attorney who was actually educated enough to take my case. Do not go to trail with them. They are never prepared for anything and will ask you the same questions over and over because they can't ever remember anything. Please for the sake of yourself please stay away and don't go through the hardship I did. Everything listed here is my opinion.

So at first it seemed like everything was gonna be great. I have since been turned over turned over to another "attorney", still in school who seems to not have much experience as well as lied to me several times. I also did the majority of the foot work, as they stood by telling and assuring me that getting me a plea agreement was the best option. I did my own research and told the other attorney how we were gonna proceed with the case. Needless to say I got my own charges dropped. This office is a fricking joke.

I had hired Mr. Alvarez for a case that was very difficult for me personally and he had initially made me several promises. In the initial meeting he put on a very convincing act that had me believing he was going to work hard for me. After I signed the agreement, no work was done on my case for YEARS. I never got any of my phone calls returned and after four years of waiting, I ended up with a lower settlement than I was offered before I even hired Mr. Alvarez. DO NOT USE THIS ATTORNEY.

Please read before you hire! Post Divorce- I hired this firm to represent me in my divorce case in 2020 and I couldn't be more dissatisfied with their service. I was assured my case was cut and dried and in the end, it was drug out for over 3 years and I lost everything that was important to me. John failed to get 50/50 custody of my child with 2 GAL reports recommending equal shared custody. The attorney fees I incurred here well over $50,000! I never felt like they had my back, nor felt protected or that they even cared about my situation. When I would try to seek guidance or direction, I never seemed to get a direct or clear answer, which will drive your frustration, then you ask more questions, which will cost you more money. The mistakes that were made on most every filing, I would catch, then be double or triple charged for them to correct. It takes John 2-3 longer than what I would consider normal to comprehend details. While meeting with John to discuss my case or in court, Ive watched him fall asleep right in front of me (not exagerating). I witnessed first hand him yell and talk down to his employees and myself included. He will run your case how he sees fit, if you question him, he will ignore you and not take your calls or threated to withdrawl from your case. I was not informed of my options, then felt misled, then stated I was and I chose not to do this or that. All in all, in my experience, this firm is here to drain as much time and money out of you as possible. Do not make the same mistake I did. Attorneys like this will wreck your life, as if your divorce isn't already hard enough. Post Appeal-While John prides himself on his knowledge of the law. I couldnt disagree more. He cost me several hundred thousand in martial asset, because he didn't include them as the law states. This firm cost me my custody battle, hundreds of thousand in assets, my farm, my business, my personal possessions, and years of my life, while I have now spent over $100,000 in attorney fees. I do not recommend this Firm.

He did nothing for me except cause me health issues. Also he gave me another client's information and when I told him I was not confident that he spent $17,000 worth of time on my divorce he actually wanted me to give the evidence of the other client to him. He is worthless as an attorney. I almost died due to his negligence and ended up in the hospital. Also when I brought it to his attention the ex knew the judge and conflict of interest he threatened to fire himself as my attorney. He did nothing to keep me or my children safe. They almost lost their mother due to his negliegence. My best advice is if you hire him, hire him for the opposing party. That is the only way you will get a just and fair representation.

This is the biggest waste of money in my life. After my explanation to him he claimed to be on my side and wanted to take my case. So after the first month I was okay with him and had no issue. Then I got the bill. It started to pile up each month and he was doing less and less. I would pay him a thousand here then there. Then it came time to get dirty and fight and he backed out and told me just to stick with her attorneys proposal. I said no it is not right I want to fight for what is right. It came closer and he kept fighting me on everything. He didn't submit the evidence I had worked for 6 months getting. he didn't submit the proper paper work to the court he didn't even try. It was as if he had never been in a court room or he was really never on my side but there to support them. It was amazingly horrible. He had assured me that he would use the evidence that would have shown the court and judge that they were lying and had no grounds. Just the stuff I did that he assured me was worth it cost over $4000.00. After $8000.00 there was nothing I could do. He actually even threatened to walk out on me the day of the hearing because I was asking him why he didn't do anything he charged me for. Needless to say this guy is a waste of time and money. I could have been in a much better situation if I did it on my own. The judge even told me after the hearing that that the attorney did not go about it the right way and could have prevented a lot of the extra charges if he just would have submitted the documents to the court.

Upon hiring Ms. Henderzahs I was met with little response to my communication, failure to file necessary paperwork with the court, inadequate & unresolved negotiations with opposing counsel and failure to accomplish agenda set forth. I was in receipt of a coorespondence she sent to opposing counsel that was unprofessional and clearly showed to me her lack of passion and commitment to my case. I terminated her services but not before irreparable damage to my case. While interviewing 4 new attorneys, 3 shook their heads and had previous clients with similar experiences with Ms. Henderzahs. I strongly urge anyone in a vulnerable state to not put your trust in this attorney. Trust your instincts when interviewing attorneys and when you get a red flag...run.

Mr. Meyer is extremely inappropriate in the workplace and grossly perverted in his personal interactions with his employees. Although he is a married man, he repeatedly attempted to indulge himself to his young, innocent interns, who merely wanted to get a step ahead in their careers. I have no words to say about this man other than the fact that I have never been more disgusted in my life to have the displeasure of ever knowing he existed.

Mr. Meyers is a lousy attorney. As my public defender, he worked hand in hand with the prosecutor and judge to try and bully me into a plea deal. When I wrote him I received a letter from him. In this letter he told me that he was diligently working on my case, however the list of charges he believed I was charged with were wrong. When I asked for my motion of discovery, he just ignored my requests. As of today, July 14, I have been waiting for over 4 months for this motion to be entered. Hire him at your own risk. While he may have been a good prosecutor, he is a lousy defense attorney!

Grimmer was recommended to me by another attorney. I hired him to help with a residential dispute. I do not know what happened. The case went no where. Then he asked to be removed from the case and sued me for a motion I did not authorized and took me to court when I refused to pay. The one hundred or so balance ended up costing me 1500.00 and he or his business put a judgment on my credit report. I highly recommend not using Edward Grimmer.

I hired this attorney who talked a good game. Said he could help me but ended up charging me almost double what he told me. There was no communication, or evidence of him doing any work. No recommendation here. I suggest you keep looking.

Adrienne does not communicate when asked for details regarding issues and was working on my case without my involvement. The office in general is horrible to work with. Most of my correspondence was directed, per their request, via email and phone and rarely answered. My legal issue was handled horribly and cost me dearly.

Had a real estate issue. I heard he was reputable. I was overcharged and when we we to the hearing I did all of the speaking. I still wonder what he did. Would never use again.

Extremely poor legal representation in every aspect. He failed to keep me informed on any level whatsoever, misled me with worse case scenarios, and blatantly lied to me about the outcome and consequence of the legal decision he practically forced me into with strong arm tactics. I can't emphasize and stress enough how hiring this attorney is a complete waste of money and time.

She does not feel that getting requested and required paperwork out is important. As of 5/21/10, 3 court subpoenas for 3 different people were requested at least 2 weeks prior to today's date - none have been sent or even written.

I contacted this man 10/24/2022 in regards to a property on 1619 S Carlisle St. South Bend, IN. I was met with EXTREME aggression for simply asking questions about the status of the property that is owned by my grandfather James Jenkins. He refused to give me answers and told me i need to speak with my aunt instead of him (an attorney). Im worried this property will never be sold because of this mans extremely bad attitude and aggressiveness. if you happen to ever run into this man or anyone associated with him RUN!

Little effort and bad legal advice. Printed up a terrible plea agreement that did not fit the crime. Also had misinformed me of what was owed to him trying to get more money than what was previously agreed upon.

First off he visited me once when I was in Madison county jail and that was to tell me that my mother hired me. I was in jail for 4 months and finally when I went to court he had no strategy to defend me, he looked like he just woke up coming into the court room. He wanted me to sign a plea agreement for 6 months work release. That’s what the prosecution wanted. Even though I had been sitting in jail longer than I should have because the Judge who was originally in charge of my case was Angela sims but she was my attorney for the original case against me so it was conflict of interest. The judge disagreed with the prosecution because I had sat so long in jail already for violating probation which I was on for a D felony and Violated with a class a misdemeanor driving without a license. The judge released me. Once I got out of jail Mr. Baylor insisted I come see him about my case in Hamilton County. When My girlfriend and I walked into his office he was just spinning around in his chair like a child. He was just saying things that were very unprofessional and didn’t make any sense towards my case and he smelled of booze. This guy simply shouldn’t be aloud to be an attorney period.

After hiring Mr. Payne to represent me in my divorce case, I immediately had the feeling that he didn't care much about the case other than to just "get it done and over with". I have worked with many attorney's in the past due to my career, but none as eager to just roll over and play dead as Mr. Payne was. He seemed less than knowledgeable when I asked questions and was somewhat pushy to get me to agree to things I would have rather not agreed to. I also found out later (after it was too late) that he mis-advised me on several issues which have since caused me great financial struggle. After the finalization of my divorce, I hired a different attorney for a custody case. After doing so, my new attorney requested my complete file from Mr. Payne. In doing so, we found that he had never followed through with his duties to collect specific forms before the divorce from my now, ex-husband. These were itemized charges on his bill that I paid, that were obviously never done. I would not recommend his services to anyone, unless you have a super easy case and want the affordable option to just "get it done with".

What a Litigation Lawyer Can Do for You

A litigation lawyer specializes in representing individuals, businesses, or organizations involved in legal disputes. Whether you're the one filing a lawsuit or you're being sued, a litigation attorney will advocate on your behalf throughout the entire legal process. Their goal is to resolve disputes, either through negotiation, settlement, or trial. Litigation lawyers can help with a wide range of disputes, including contract disagreements, real estate issues, employment disputes, personal injury claims, and more.

Litigation lawyers provide strategic legal advice and manage all aspects of your case, from filing motions to representing you in court, ensuring that your rights are protected and that you have the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome.

When Should I Hire a Litigation Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a litigation lawyer if you're involved in a legal dispute that you cannot resolve on your own. Common situations include:

  • Breach of contract disputes: If a party to a contract fails to fulfill their obligations, a litigation lawyer can help you seek damages or enforce the agreement.
  • Business disputes: Litigation lawyers can represent you in cases of partnership disagreements, intellectual property disputes, or business fraud.
  • Employment disputes: If you're facing issues like wrongful termination, workplace discrimination, or wage disputes, a litigation lawyer can help resolve these matters through negotiation or court action.
  • Personal injury claims: If you've been injured due to someone else's negligence and are seeking compensation, a litigation attorney can help you pursue your case.
  • Real estate or property disputes: When there are conflicts over property ownership, boundary issues, or lease agreements, a litigation lawyer can assist in resolving the dispute.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process is beneficial, especially if a lawsuit seems imminent or you have already been served with legal documents.

What Does a Litigation Lawyer Do?

A litigation lawyer handles all aspects of your case, from the initial investigation to the trial and even the appeals process, if necessary. Their role includes:

  • Case assessment and investigation: Analyzing the facts of your case and advising whether it’s worth pursuing or defending.
  • Pleadings and motions: Drafting and filing documents to initiate or respond to a lawsuit, including complaints, motions to dismiss, and answers.
  • Discovery: Gathering evidence, including depositions, interrogatories, and document requests, to build your case.
  • Negotiations and settlement discussions: Attempting to resolve disputes through mediation, arbitration, or settlement talks before going to trial.
  • Trial representation: Presenting your case in court, examining witnesses, introducing evidence, and making legal arguments before a judge or jury.
  • Appeals: If necessary, filing appeals to challenge or defend the outcome of the trial.

Litigation lawyers are also skilled negotiators and often work to resolve disputes outside of court to save time, money, and stress for their clients.

How Are Litigation Lawyers Paid?

Litigation lawyers typically use a variety of fee structures depending on the type of case, the complexity of the legal matter, and the financial circumstances of the client. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Many litigation attorneys charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and geographic location.
  • Flat fees: For specific, predictable legal tasks (such as filing a motion), lawyers may offer a flat fee.
  • Contingency fees: In personal injury or other cases where you seek damages, a lawyer may work on a contingency basis, taking a percentage of the settlement or award if you win.
  • Retainer: Some clients pay a retainer fee upfront to secure ongoing legal services. The lawyer then bills against this retainer as work is done.

The exact structure should be discussed in the initial consultation to ensure you understand how and when you'll be charged.

How Much Does a Litigation Lawyer Cost?

The cost of a litigation lawyer varies significantly depending on the nature of the dispute and the lawyer’s experience. Factors affecting the cost include:

  • The complexity of the case: More complex litigation involving extensive discovery, expert witnesses, or multi-party suits typically costs more.
  • Time spent: Litigation cases can be time-consuming, especially if they go to trial. The longer the case, the higher the legal fees.
  • Type of fee arrangement: Hourly rates can range from $200 to over $1,000 per hour, depending on the lawyer’s reputation and location. Contingency fees generally range from 25% to 40% of the settlement or award.
  • Stage of litigation: Cases that settle early in the process are often less expensive than those that proceed to trial or appeal.

It’s crucial to ask about cost estimates during your initial consultation to avoid surprises.

Top Questions to Ask a Litigation Lawyer

Before hiring a litigation lawyer, it's essential to ask key questions to ensure you're choosing the right representation:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Ensure that the lawyer has experience handling your specific type of dispute, whether it's a contract issue, personal injury, or business matter.
  2. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case's strengths, weaknesses, and the likelihood of success.
  3. What is your fee structure?
Clarify how you'll be charged, whether by the hour, a flat fee, or on a contingency basis.
  4. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it's hard to predict, an experienced lawyer can give you a rough estimate based on similar cases.
  5. How often do you settle cases versus going to trial?
Some lawyers are more inclined to settle, while others may be more experienced in the courtroom. It’s important to understand their strategy.
  6. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Some lawyers prefer aggressive litigation, while others focus on settlement or mediation. Choose one whose approach aligns with your goals.

How to Check the Credibility of a Litigation Lawyer

To verify a litigation lawyer’s credibility, consider the following steps:

  • Check bar association records: Ensure the lawyer is in good standing with the state bar and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Online reviews can provide insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and track record.
  • Look for litigation experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they have handled cases like yours and have a record of success.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer to provide references from past clients who can speak to their effectiveness and approach.
  • Research their trial experience: If your case is likely to go to trial, ensure the lawyer has a history of courtroom success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make your first consultation with a litigation lawyer productive, you should prepare the following:

  • A clear outline of the dispute: Provide a timeline and key details about the legal issue you're facing.
  • Any relevant documents: Bring contracts, emails, letters, or any other documentation that pertains to the case.
  • A list of key players: Provide the names of individuals or companies involved in the dispute.
  • Questions about fees and the litigation process: Make sure you understand how the lawyer plans to approach your case and how you will be charged.
  • Your goals and expectations: Be clear about what outcome you're hoping for, whether it's a settlement, compensation, or another resolution.

By coming prepared, you can ensure that your initial meeting with the lawyer is both efficient and insightful, giving you a better sense of how to proceed with your case.
