Lauren has helped our small business with everything from trademark applications to creating, reviewing, and negotiating contracts with clients and vendors. She brings meticulous attention to detail and clearly advocates for our best interests. I have most appreciated her ability to translate formal, legal writing (a.k.a. “legalese”) into the basic arguments or issues at stake, so we can make well informed decisions.

From late 2009 - early 2011, our band, "Stabbingback", was in a legal battle regarding contracts with a record label. Legal counsel who could clearly communicate the legal preceding without alienating anyone in the process was required. Jim Jackson fit the bill to a T. From the first meeting at his office in downtown Seattle, Jim was kind, courteous, professional and very sympathetic to our situation. From the beginning, he made us priority by working with us on issues such as budget and by timing meetings set around our schedule. In fact, there was very little he was not willing to do for his clients to ensure we had the best chance for success. The one trait which really prevailed during this entire ordeal was Jim's honesty. We cannot emphasize enough how amazing it was to get the truth, good or bad, whenever we had a meeting or phone call. Questions were always answered , strategy was always clear, and details were never hidden. When a lawyer gives you bad news you expect to walk away irritated or angry, but not with Jim. He has the skill of presenting information to remind you it is not the end of the world. No dramatization. No additional stress. Needless to say, it was appreciated. The question comes up often, "Did you win?". The answer, no. But we did not lose either. We have not been able to make all responsible parties get the their just reward, but we were able to shut down the responsible record label for good. We feel like out of all the outcomes that could have come from this, ours was certainly an acceptable one. Thank you Jim for all your hard work on our case. We know without a doubt, without you, we would not have been able to do so much with so little. Thank you. Gage Sifuentes And Josie Straka

I was not a client of Mr. Rullman but witnessed him in action during a trial he had in early 2021. I can say through out the Trial he was very professional, organized, methodical, articulate and thorough. He presented with confidence, respect and knowledge. Upon the conclusion of the trial, he was very personable and took time with genuine interest in hearing feed back. He is definitely a lawyer I would want to hire, if I had a case that was going to trial.

Jeremy is at the top of his field with providing businesses with intellectual property legal advice. He has handled numerous matters for me all of which had a positive outcome. He truly cares about his clients and their best interest. Legal bills can add up quickly and Jeremy is quick to point out which paths don't have an ROI. Many attorneys understand administrative intellectual property legal processes, but Jeremy is the litigator you want on your side when pursuing these claims.

We worked with Margaret for over 2 years and the entire time, I do not know if it was us or her that was more passionate about winning! She kept our best interest in mind at all times, even if that meant prolonging the case. It was a very long process, but we were never worried and always incredibly satisfied with Margaret's professionalism. I've worked with a handful of attorney's and have yet to work with anyone who is as passionate about doing what is right!!!

Geoff's firm was recommended to me by a good friend, also a lawyer. My experience with legal issues in the past had lead me to believe that most lawyers were unapproachable and hard to understand. I had a tenant go sideways on me and legal guidance was absolutely imperative. Geoff helped me to understand what steps could be taken, and the implication of these steps. He got me through a very tough situation relatively unscathed and for that, I am grateful. Since then, I've contacted Geoff for guidance in other areas; he's always clear about the limitation of his expertise in some areas but can help me to understand the law in a way that informs my decision regarding the necessity going further. It's a huge boon to know that I have created a professional relationship with someone who is on my side; legal help is not often required, but when it is, you want to know you're working with someone you trust. I trust Geoff.

Brett has been very helpful with a wide variety of situations, but especially with contract negotiations and dispute resolutions. Regarding disputes, he is always very well prepared and has a knack for being firm without burning bridges with the other party. As a litigator, he has a good handle on what will or won't stand up in court, so we are always able to realistically assess our risks. Regarding negotiations, he is adept at adding protective language without killing the deal. He knows what's worth fighting for and what you can just let go. His fees are always reasonable without a bunch of fluff, and he's easy to work with.

Valerie handled an appeal of my family law case. An exceptionally professional approach; superbly timely actions and swift responses to my inquiries, laid out the whole process with options before we started, stuck to the plan and won the case. Suggested a new attorney for me to handle matters past appeal, and made sure we've connected. I am very pleased with her work ethics, knowledge, methods and obviously, the outcome. After being arrested and charged with two felonies that I did not commit, my wife researched Seattle area criminal defense attorneys and then contacted Mckay-Chadwell on the recommendation of a friend. I feel very fortunate that we hired Mckay-Chadwell and that my fate was placed in the competent, professional hands of attorney Donald (D. Jack) Guthrie. I needed someone to defend me and that's exactly what Donald Guthrie did, he defended me. From our very first meeting I was impressed with his professionalism, compassion, and attention to detail as I was in the midst of enduring the most difficult four months in my life. Donald Guthrie helped to guide me through this worst of times as smoothly as possible. He has a firm grasp on what the prosecutorial techniques and motivations entail and that's a crucial element in criminal defense. He was patient with the prosecutors when he needed to be and aggressive when the circumstances called for it. Additionally, Donald Guthrie didn't just tell me "how it was going to be", he honestly and respectfully listened to my thoughts and concerns. Thanks to Mckay-Chadwell and attorney Donald Guthrie's excellent legal defense my case ultimately resulted in a full dismissal of all charges against me. I would highly recommend Mckay-Chadwell and talented attorney Donald (D.Jack) Guthrie to anyone who is in need of a criminal defense attorney.

What a Litigation Lawyer Can Do for You

A litigation lawyer specializes in representing individuals, businesses, or organizations involved in legal disputes. Whether you're the one filing a lawsuit or you're being sued, a litigation attorney will advocate on your behalf throughout the entire legal process. Their goal is to resolve disputes, either through negotiation, settlement, or trial. Litigation lawyers can help with a wide range of disputes, including contract disagreements, real estate issues, employment disputes, personal injury claims, and more.

Litigation lawyers provide strategic legal advice and manage all aspects of your case, from filing motions to representing you in court, ensuring that your rights are protected and that you have the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome.

When Should I Hire a Litigation Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a litigation lawyer if you're involved in a legal dispute that you cannot resolve on your own. Common situations include:

  • Breach of contract disputes: If a party to a contract fails to fulfill their obligations, a litigation lawyer can help you seek damages or enforce the agreement.
  • Business disputes: Litigation lawyers can represent you in cases of partnership disagreements, intellectual property disputes, or business fraud.
  • Employment disputes: If you're facing issues like wrongful termination, workplace discrimination, or wage disputes, a litigation lawyer can help resolve these matters through negotiation or court action.
  • Personal injury claims: If you've been injured due to someone else's negligence and are seeking compensation, a litigation attorney can help you pursue your case.
  • Real estate or property disputes: When there are conflicts over property ownership, boundary issues, or lease agreements, a litigation lawyer can assist in resolving the dispute.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process is beneficial, especially if a lawsuit seems imminent or you have already been served with legal documents.

What Does a Litigation Lawyer Do?

A litigation lawyer handles all aspects of your case, from the initial investigation to the trial and even the appeals process, if necessary. Their role includes:

  • Case assessment and investigation: Analyzing the facts of your case and advising whether it’s worth pursuing or defending.
  • Pleadings and motions: Drafting and filing documents to initiate or respond to a lawsuit, including complaints, motions to dismiss, and answers.
  • Discovery: Gathering evidence, including depositions, interrogatories, and document requests, to build your case.
  • Negotiations and settlement discussions: Attempting to resolve disputes through mediation, arbitration, or settlement talks before going to trial.
  • Trial representation: Presenting your case in court, examining witnesses, introducing evidence, and making legal arguments before a judge or jury.
  • Appeals: If necessary, filing appeals to challenge or defend the outcome of the trial.

Litigation lawyers are also skilled negotiators and often work to resolve disputes outside of court to save time, money, and stress for their clients.

How Are Litigation Lawyers Paid?

Litigation lawyers typically use a variety of fee structures depending on the type of case, the complexity of the legal matter, and the financial circumstances of the client. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Many litigation attorneys charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and geographic location.
  • Flat fees: For specific, predictable legal tasks (such as filing a motion), lawyers may offer a flat fee.
  • Contingency fees: In personal injury or other cases where you seek damages, a lawyer may work on a contingency basis, taking a percentage of the settlement or award if you win.
  • Retainer: Some clients pay a retainer fee upfront to secure ongoing legal services. The lawyer then bills against this retainer as work is done.

The exact structure should be discussed in the initial consultation to ensure you understand how and when you'll be charged.

How Much Does a Litigation Lawyer Cost?

The cost of a litigation lawyer varies significantly depending on the nature of the dispute and the lawyer’s experience. Factors affecting the cost include:

  • The complexity of the case: More complex litigation involving extensive discovery, expert witnesses, or multi-party suits typically costs more.
  • Time spent: Litigation cases can be time-consuming, especially if they go to trial. The longer the case, the higher the legal fees.
  • Type of fee arrangement: Hourly rates can range from $200 to over $1,000 per hour, depending on the lawyer’s reputation and location. Contingency fees generally range from 25% to 40% of the settlement or award.
  • Stage of litigation: Cases that settle early in the process are often less expensive than those that proceed to trial or appeal.

It’s crucial to ask about cost estimates during your initial consultation to avoid surprises.

Top Questions to Ask a Litigation Lawyer

Before hiring a litigation lawyer, it's essential to ask key questions to ensure you're choosing the right representation:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Ensure that the lawyer has experience handling your specific type of dispute, whether it's a contract issue, personal injury, or business matter.
  2. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case's strengths, weaknesses, and the likelihood of success.
  3. What is your fee structure?
Clarify how you'll be charged, whether by the hour, a flat fee, or on a contingency basis.
  4. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it's hard to predict, an experienced lawyer can give you a rough estimate based on similar cases.
  5. How often do you settle cases versus going to trial?
Some lawyers are more inclined to settle, while others may be more experienced in the courtroom. It’s important to understand their strategy.
  6. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Some lawyers prefer aggressive litigation, while others focus on settlement or mediation. Choose one whose approach aligns with your goals.

How to Check the Credibility of a Litigation Lawyer

To verify a litigation lawyer’s credibility, consider the following steps:

  • Check bar association records: Ensure the lawyer is in good standing with the state bar and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Online reviews can provide insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and track record.
  • Look for litigation experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they have handled cases like yours and have a record of success.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer to provide references from past clients who can speak to their effectiveness and approach.
  • Research their trial experience: If your case is likely to go to trial, ensure the lawyer has a history of courtroom success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make your first consultation with a litigation lawyer productive, you should prepare the following:

  • A clear outline of the dispute: Provide a timeline and key details about the legal issue you're facing.
  • Any relevant documents: Bring contracts, emails, letters, or any other documentation that pertains to the case.
  • A list of key players: Provide the names of individuals or companies involved in the dispute.
  • Questions about fees and the litigation process: Make sure you understand how the lawyer plans to approach your case and how you will be charged.
  • Your goals and expectations: Be clear about what outcome you're hoping for, whether it's a settlement, compensation, or another resolution.

By coming prepared, you can ensure that your initial meeting with the lawyer is both efficient and insightful, giving you a better sense of how to proceed with your case.
