Joel was very professional, helpful and comforting. Even when it seemed like our case might be one that could not be settled he kept at it and found a good resolution for us. He was recommended to us by another friend who is a lawyer in our area. I would certainly tell any of my friends to call Joel if they needed help, he was great to work with.

In cases like ours things usually don't go well for the individuals; the large companies with the larger claims take all the available money drag the case out for decades while the individuals are left with nothing. Joel helped us out by walking us through the documents we needed and by attempting an inter pleader, which worked great. Everyone got something and the case was able to come to a close so everyone could get on with their lives.

Kienan was my attorney when I came forward about the sexual abuse that I experienced in graduate school. The perpetrator was a faculty member at a nationally acclaimed university who was also teaching at an elite boarding school. Kienan began working with me at the beginning of the #metoo movement, when the process of exposing abusers felt like largely uncharted territory. I had been in contact with other attorneys who prioritized financial gain over my healing process and even threatened to expose my identity when I wasn’t yet ready. In contrast, Kienan approached my case with the highest levels of professionalism and respect. His strong legal acumen, passion for justice, and regard for my healing process as a survivor made me feel safe and confident in an otherwise intimidating situation. Kienan and I worked together over the course of a year and a half, at the pace I needed to go in order to avoid retraumatization. He was always available to answer my questions and offer support. Further, I was greatly aided by his compassionate understanding of the trauma I had experienced as well as his fierce advocacy for bringing healing to survivors and preventing others from being harmed. I highly recommend Kienan Christianson—he helped me reach a place of healing that I hadn’t imagined possible.

Kienan represented me during a really intense custody disagreement between me and my son's father. A friend of mine who previously worked with Kienan recommended him to me, and I couldn't be more grateful. Kienan was professional, knowledgeable and skillful. Not only is he masterful with his knowledge of the law, his people skills will win over any judge's favor due to his courteousness, graciousness, and humility. My son's father was attempting to win full custody, but thanks to Kienan hard work, attention to detail and experience, I was the one who was granted full custody of my son. On top of Kienan's impressive work ethic, he's simply a pleasure to work with. He was always realnwith me yet respectful. He displayed great deals of empathy for me while I was dealing with this really difficult situation. He was also very respectful of my budget, aware that I was receiving help from family to afford his services, he was transparent with the cost of everything ahead of time and was always willing to discuss the pros and cons with me and my family. I can't express enough appreciation for Kienan, and I would definitely hire Kienan again should I need representation again!

Kienan is passionate, driven and detail oriented. He fights tirelessly for others and works incredibly hard for his clients. In my case, Kienan was an excellent communicator and explained the process as well as the rational behind his advice making a very painful process feel much less exhausting. I have referred friends to Kienan as well who had similar praise to offer. I would highly recommend Attorney Christianson.

I was in need of a lawyer for legal representation during a divorce and family court. What I got was someone that treated me as a friend that seemed to have know me forever, Austin truly has his clients best interests at heart, and he will fight for you as if you were part of his family. I am truely grateful that Austin represented me because without Austin I would have been completely screwed. This guy knows his stuff I would highly recommend him to anybody! And to top it off he is a great guy! He takes his time to explain everything and you will never be left in the dark! If you need a lawyer for family/divorce hire this guy!

I have hired Mr. gray on a few occasions that ranged from a simple Quick Claim Deed so I could legally add my new wife onto a property I had previously owned before marriage, to navigating through an eviction process in order to have a tenant removed from my rental property. Each time I contacted and worked with Mr. Gray I found him to be very curious and helpful in navigating the legal system. I also found Mr. Gray to be quite clear with explaining the options as well as focused on what the desired outcome was while reassuring me that he would handle the tough stuff. If I find I am ever in need of legal assistance I will not hesitate in calling Mr. Gray. He truly was a great help when I needed the assistance.

I called upon Matthew D. Anderson in the winter of 2013 to handle a charge against me from a couple years back. Matt was very responsive and immediately gave me a summary of what I should expect in the proceedings. Matt kept communication open and displayed a positive attitude from the get-go. This particular case I was wrongly accused and felt I needed excellent representation. I have received such representation and Matt has gone above and beyond my expectations. He has provided several scenarios and possible outcomes and every decision has been well calculated. He has let me decide which route to take in all decisions but has done so by providing me with outstanding information. He is well respected by fellow attorneys and is always on his 'A-game'. I am confident in Matthew as an attorney for any legal matters that may arise.

I hired James for an unusual case and he was superb. He listened...REALLY listened, then he asked questions, presented multiple options and allowed me to make the decision on the course of action. Once I did, he methodically prepared prior to court. He compiled evidence, established timelines and culled the information according to how pertinent and impactful it would be. In court he was articulate and firm without being overly aggressive. During cross examination he showed how, when and where the plaintiff had lied. I received an outcome beyond what I hoped for. While the circumstances of hiring James were tough, his work was beyond reproach. I highly recommend him.

I was accused of making a false phone call to 911. Williston Police tried to charge me with making the phone call, and causing a "public safety hazard". They were seeking a written apology (most likely to be published in the paper) and a $1000 fine to cover "Fire Department" coasts. My father is an NYC firefighter - and that wasn't happening. Ian did not hesitate when I told him to tell the Fire and Police Departments to pound sand, and I would NOT be writing a check for $0.01. I was ready to take it to court, but because of Ian, the Fire Department and Williston PD folded, and the charges were dropped. As Ian will admit, he is not the "least expensive" attorney in Burlington - however, I'd rather be the one with the gun at the knife fight. Right? So, thank you to Ian, for handling my situation quickly, quietly and getting my desired outcome. I will recommend Ian given the chance; and although I hope to never need his assistance again, I wouldn't hesitate to hire him or his firm.

Take a 70-year-old, sleep-deprived, bleary-eyed, city-dwelling, out-of-state grandmother caring for a newborn, making an early-morning grocery run for her children and their family, driving an unfamiliar vehicle on foreign country roads. Combine all that with a local sheriff aiming a radar gun. The result is a speeding ticket which, despite a stellar driving record, would have wrecked havoc with this grandmother's already hefty insurance premium. I couldn't return to Vermont to fight the ticket myself, so I hired Evan to represent me in the case, hoping to have the ticket reduced to a non-moving violation. What did I get? Excellent representation that resulted in dismissal of all charges! Thank you, Evan. You are a godsend.

Dear Brooks and the Gravel & Shea Team, I am writing to express my deepest gratitude for the exceptional legal representation provided by Brooks during our recent lawsuit. From the very first moment, Brooks displayed a remarkable ability to connect with my teenage daughter, earning her attention and trust immediately. This was no small feat, and it made a world of difference to our family during a very challenging time. Brooks's expertise, dedication, and compassionate approach were evident in every aspect of his work. He took the time to thoroughly explain the legal process, answered all our questions with patience and clarity, and always kept us informed about the progress of the case. His professionalism and commitment to our case were truly outstanding. What impressed us the most was Brooks's ability to make my daughter feel comfortable and confident throughout the entire process. His empathetic and understanding nature provided her with a sense of security and reassurance that was invaluable to us as a family. We are extremely happy with the outcome of the case and cannot thank Brooks enough for his hard work and dedication. His efforts have had a profound impact on our lives, and we are forever grateful. I worked with Kate Dingle (Kronk) at Murphy, Sullivan and Kronk to sell my Internet marketing business to venture capitalists on the East Coast. She did an exceptional job. She managed the process, negotiated the terms working against a team of very experienced VC lawyers, and was relentless in pursuing my interests. As a result of her work I received top dollar and also avoided signing several alternative deals that she advised me were not up to snuff. She was right about the latter. Most impressively she not only knows the law but fights for and pushes back for her clients refusing to accept smoke screens and poorly pitched and conceived terms of acquisition and ownership. I hired MSK after a year long dismal and incredibly expensive experience with a larger firm, Downes Rachlin and Martin (DRM). MSK is much smaller, but they proved much better lawyers, more deeply engaged in the outcome, knowledgeable of business law, and more reasonable in their fees. Grateful for their advice and assistance which paid off in spades in finally closing a deal that DRM had dragged through their billing machine for over a year.

My wife and I worked with Brian and Olivia for her immigration and they were both great! A big reason I went with MSK is because of my first phone conversation with Olivia. Both Brian and Olivia were super attentive, talked over things with me numerous times, and were always quick to respond to my emails and calls. They were the only place who were honest and upfront about the price which gave me piece of mind knowing the cost wouldn’t spiral out of control like many of the other lawyers/firms I contacted initially. I contacted numerous individual immigration lawyers in Vermont who wouldn’t even give me a shred of information until I payed their fee, maybe that’s how it is with lawyers but it felt downright rude to me. Also completely unwillingly to talk about price, even in the vaguest of terms. So when I finally contacted MSK and spoke to Olivia you could imagine my surprise when someone treated me with respect and actually told me a price. Save yourself the stress, for immigration go with MSK. Highly recommended.

These folks were fantastic until they weren't. They overlooked at close a Homestead Property Tax refund that resulted in thousands of dollars lost. Vermont statutes state these refunds go to the sellers. A simple escrow fund would have taken care of this. It took months to get answers and several flippant remarks along the way. There advice given was simply to sue the new buyers or complete a withdrawal which would have doubled the $ lost. They didn't even provide a link on how to sue if I had chosen that path. (not) They took absolutely zero responsibility for their oversight and didn't so much as offer and apology for their obvious mistake. Sadly , I would give them negative 5 stars based on my experience.

Cynthia Broadfoot - A True Professional in Divorce Law I recently had the privilege of working with Cindy during my divorce, and I cannot emphasize enough how grateful I am for her exceptional legal representation and support throughout the entire process. From the very first consultation, Cindy demonstrated an in-depth understanding of divorce law and a compassionate approach to my unique situation. She took the time to listen to my concerns, assess the complexities of my case, and provided honest and realistic expectations about the possible outcomes. Throughout the process, communication with Cindy was outstanding. I always felt well-informed about the progress of my case, and she promptly responded to any questions or concerns I had along the way. This level of responsiveness and attention to detail gave me the confidence that my case was in the hands of a competent and dedicated professional. Cindy proved to be a highly skilled negotiator during settlement discussions, advocating for my best interests while keeping the focus on finding an amicable resolution whenever possible. Thanks to her expertise and strategic approach, we were able to reach a favorable settlement without the need for a lengthy and emotionally draining court battle. Furthermore, I was impressed by the level of empathy and understanding shown by Cindy. Going through a divorce is an emotionally challenging experience, but she was there every step of the way, providing not just legal guidance, but also emotional support. The legal fees were reasonable and transparent, and I never felt that I was being charged unnecessarily or unfairly. Cindy was upfront about the costs from the beginning and provided detailed invoices that made it easy to track the expenses. Overall, I cannot recommend Cynthia Broadfoot highly enough for anyone in need of a divorce attorney. If you are looking for a professional who combines legal expertise, outstanding communication, and genuine care for her clients, Cindy is the one you can trust. Mr. Bond represented me in a consumer fraud case with a contractor. In the complaint he wrote to initiate the case, he misplaced the emphasis in a number of ways and also left out one crucial fact. When the contractor's lawyer responded with a motion to dismiss the case, this gaping hole played a major role in the judge's decision to dismiss. Mr. Bond then convinced me to appeal the dismissal -- at significant cost to me, of course. The other side then suggested mediation. It was in the mediation process that Mr. Bond demonstrated his most extraordinary incompetence. He started by insisting that we open by asking for an outrageous sum. This undermined our credibility from the outset and put the contractor on the defensive. All through the grueling negotiations, Mr. Bond stayed on the sidelines, basically an empty suit. After many hours, when I was very tired, I made the first move toward compromise, and the other side finally began to budge. At this point, Mr. Bond broke in, took me aside, and tried to convince me to accept their very first, ridiculously low offer! That was when I realized I was on my own. I managed to get thousands of dollars more only because I ignored his advice. The final sum, however, was much less than I needed to make myself whole. From the very beginning, Mr. Bond pulled rank on me as a lawyer and ignored suggestions I made that would have made our case stronger. (He thinks very highly of himself.) He was always in a hurry and never showed an interest in understanding the details of the case, nor was he ever committed to the main and indeed only goal, which was simply to recover enough money to repair the damage that had resulted from the incompetence, deceitfulness, and intransigence of the contractor. (The mediator actually told me that I had been "badly treated.") In retrospect, I believe my main goal never was Mr. Bond's goal. My reading is that it was a slow time for him (during covid), he needed the work, and it didn't matter to him how it worked out in the end: he'd be paid anyway. The standard caricature of a lawyer. How is it that I, who had never participated in mediation, was better at it on my first try than he was after countless similar experiences? I am fully convinced that had he not been in the room and I had handled the negotiations alone, I would have been able to recover enough money to come out even. He hurt that effort. He is a hapless negotiator. And since most such cases go to mediation, this is a crucial shortcoming. You're better not hiring this guy.

David is one of the few first-rate litigators in a small state. He was quick to grasp the key issues in our case, and unfailingly accurate in his understanding of how the law should apply - indeed considerably more so than our state court judges. His ability to recall facts is equal to the quality of his legal reasoning. I have rarely made fewer comments or edits on a brief than with David's, in more than three decades of managing preeminent attorneys in complex international litigation. Having seen perhaps a dozen of the state’s litigators in action, I have found David far superior in efficiency, effectiveness and value.

I can't recommend Ed Fitzpatrick enough. He is a fantastic lawyer and good person. He took care of my grandfather's legal needs and his estate and couldn't have done a better job. He is honest, experienced, and trustworthy. Highly recommend anyone/everyone to use him for their estate/will (or anything else).

Felt very well-represented and supported through a collaborative divorce process. My attorney was organized, highly responsive, respectful and mindful of my situation, budget and time constraints. Despite all the concerns and unknowns that can be faced in a legal case, I never felt alone or abandoned. Top notched quality, value, effort and follow through. Highly recommend!

I contacted Peter for a consultation. He told me his policy was to charge $300 for the consultation. I found out later through several of my friends that he did it for free. I contacted him and attempted to allow him too right this wrong with absolutely no reply. I should’ve known to never trust a self proclaimed charitable person.

What a Litigation Lawyer Can Do for You

A litigation lawyer specializes in representing individuals, businesses, or organizations involved in legal disputes. Whether you're the one filing a lawsuit or you're being sued, a litigation attorney will advocate on your behalf throughout the entire legal process. Their goal is to resolve disputes, either through negotiation, settlement, or trial. Litigation lawyers can help with a wide range of disputes, including contract disagreements, real estate issues, employment disputes, personal injury claims, and more.

Litigation lawyers provide strategic legal advice and manage all aspects of your case, from filing motions to representing you in court, ensuring that your rights are protected and that you have the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome.

When Should I Hire a Litigation Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a litigation lawyer if you're involved in a legal dispute that you cannot resolve on your own. Common situations include:

  • Breach of contract disputes: If a party to a contract fails to fulfill their obligations, a litigation lawyer can help you seek damages or enforce the agreement.
  • Business disputes: Litigation lawyers can represent you in cases of partnership disagreements, intellectual property disputes, or business fraud.
  • Employment disputes: If you're facing issues like wrongful termination, workplace discrimination, or wage disputes, a litigation lawyer can help resolve these matters through negotiation or court action.
  • Personal injury claims: If you've been injured due to someone else's negligence and are seeking compensation, a litigation attorney can help you pursue your case.
  • Real estate or property disputes: When there are conflicts over property ownership, boundary issues, or lease agreements, a litigation lawyer can assist in resolving the dispute.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process is beneficial, especially if a lawsuit seems imminent or you have already been served with legal documents.

What Does a Litigation Lawyer Do?

A litigation lawyer handles all aspects of your case, from the initial investigation to the trial and even the appeals process, if necessary. Their role includes:

  • Case assessment and investigation: Analyzing the facts of your case and advising whether it’s worth pursuing or defending.
  • Pleadings and motions: Drafting and filing documents to initiate or respond to a lawsuit, including complaints, motions to dismiss, and answers.
  • Discovery: Gathering evidence, including depositions, interrogatories, and document requests, to build your case.
  • Negotiations and settlement discussions: Attempting to resolve disputes through mediation, arbitration, or settlement talks before going to trial.
  • Trial representation: Presenting your case in court, examining witnesses, introducing evidence, and making legal arguments before a judge or jury.
  • Appeals: If necessary, filing appeals to challenge or defend the outcome of the trial.

Litigation lawyers are also skilled negotiators and often work to resolve disputes outside of court to save time, money, and stress for their clients.

How Are Litigation Lawyers Paid?

Litigation lawyers typically use a variety of fee structures depending on the type of case, the complexity of the legal matter, and the financial circumstances of the client. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Many litigation attorneys charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and geographic location.
  • Flat fees: For specific, predictable legal tasks (such as filing a motion), lawyers may offer a flat fee.
  • Contingency fees: In personal injury or other cases where you seek damages, a lawyer may work on a contingency basis, taking a percentage of the settlement or award if you win.
  • Retainer: Some clients pay a retainer fee upfront to secure ongoing legal services. The lawyer then bills against this retainer as work is done.

The exact structure should be discussed in the initial consultation to ensure you understand how and when you'll be charged.

How Much Does a Litigation Lawyer Cost?

The cost of a litigation lawyer varies significantly depending on the nature of the dispute and the lawyer’s experience. Factors affecting the cost include:

  • The complexity of the case: More complex litigation involving extensive discovery, expert witnesses, or multi-party suits typically costs more.
  • Time spent: Litigation cases can be time-consuming, especially if they go to trial. The longer the case, the higher the legal fees.
  • Type of fee arrangement: Hourly rates can range from $200 to over $1,000 per hour, depending on the lawyer’s reputation and location. Contingency fees generally range from 25% to 40% of the settlement or award.
  • Stage of litigation: Cases that settle early in the process are often less expensive than those that proceed to trial or appeal.

It’s crucial to ask about cost estimates during your initial consultation to avoid surprises.

Top Questions to Ask a Litigation Lawyer

Before hiring a litigation lawyer, it's essential to ask key questions to ensure you're choosing the right representation:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Ensure that the lawyer has experience handling your specific type of dispute, whether it's a contract issue, personal injury, or business matter.
  2. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case's strengths, weaknesses, and the likelihood of success.
  3. What is your fee structure?
Clarify how you'll be charged, whether by the hour, a flat fee, or on a contingency basis.
  4. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it's hard to predict, an experienced lawyer can give you a rough estimate based on similar cases.
  5. How often do you settle cases versus going to trial?
Some lawyers are more inclined to settle, while others may be more experienced in the courtroom. It’s important to understand their strategy.
  6. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Some lawyers prefer aggressive litigation, while others focus on settlement or mediation. Choose one whose approach aligns with your goals.

How to Check the Credibility of a Litigation Lawyer

To verify a litigation lawyer’s credibility, consider the following steps:

  • Check bar association records: Ensure the lawyer is in good standing with the state bar and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Online reviews can provide insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and track record.
  • Look for litigation experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they have handled cases like yours and have a record of success.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer to provide references from past clients who can speak to their effectiveness and approach.
  • Research their trial experience: If your case is likely to go to trial, ensure the lawyer has a history of courtroom success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make your first consultation with a litigation lawyer productive, you should prepare the following:

  • A clear outline of the dispute: Provide a timeline and key details about the legal issue you're facing.
  • Any relevant documents: Bring contracts, emails, letters, or any other documentation that pertains to the case.
  • A list of key players: Provide the names of individuals or companies involved in the dispute.
  • Questions about fees and the litigation process: Make sure you understand how the lawyer plans to approach your case and how you will be charged.
  • Your goals and expectations: Be clear about what outcome you're hoping for, whether it's a settlement, compensation, or another resolution.

By coming prepared, you can ensure that your initial meeting with the lawyer is both efficient and insightful, giving you a better sense of how to proceed with your case.
