Appoximately one year ago my wife of almost 27 years asked to end our marriage. A few days later we agree to get a divorce. A close business associate gave me a referral to the law firm of Freed/Marcroft in Hartford on Main Street. Our first meeting was in early August 2014 and our divorce proceedings ended just before Christmas of 2014 with the guidance of Lawyers Meghan Freed and Kristen Marcroft.
During a lengthy initial meeting between all parties they suggested we take a collaborative approach to completing our divorce. In this approach the attorneys help/guide the two parties involved to come to agreement on a couple dozen issues that will ultimately make up the divorce agreement that would be acceptable to the courts. They took a great deal of time to understand our years of marriage, and how each person fit into the marriage and how each person viewed the end of the marriage. At every meeting and with every phone call or email they would stress that every decision made would have to be very fair for each party. They constantly sought to educate on each topic, and remind each party of the attorney's role in this type of divorce process.
Kristen and Meghan handled the stickiest problems and contentious points with great expertise and finesse. They showed the utmost compassion and a caring attitude to both parties, which is surely not the case in most proceedings. By having two lawyers helping through the process, you get two distinct skillset and two checkers. That was most useful in overcoming some of the sticky situations that arise in the divorce process.
Kristen and Meghan move us through the entire process on a schedule they set up based upon our wishes and parameters. True to their word and nature they took us through that horrible day in court with compassion and understanding. They were able to interject themselves into the proceedings where many other of their contemporaries might not bother, which made our day easier.
Freed/Marcroft handled all our paperwork and filings under the watchful eye of Robin, the practice manager. Phone calls were returned within a sort of reasonable time, with emails and texts returned much quicker. I'm over fifty and still like voice. Email does seem to be the preferred method of communication. Kristen and Meghan were very upfront about how they get paid, what options for payment were available to us and ultimately what they felt would be the most cost efficient way to proceed.
Let me stress that the collaborative approach to divorce is not for everyone!! Kristen and Meghan will tell you as much right up front. If you want a team to help end a an important part of your life in a dignified way that is fair to all you should highly consider using Kristen Marcroft and Meghan Freed.

Claire defended me when my ex decided to file a motion to reduce his alimony payments. It was not easy but Claire was able show that my ex was voluntarily lowering his income just to pay me less and won the hearing. My experiencing working with Seth was nothing less than exceptional. Together we navigated difficult legal issues complicated by an out-of-state divorce, a poorly constructed financial agreement, and a highly litigious and unreasonable plaintiff who not surprisingly is also the mother of my children. I learned the hard way that being the sole breadwinner established me as the 2nd rate parent (she was the 'primary caregiver' because I went to work M-F) and set us up for all kinds of irresponsible family and financial expectations. Crazy stuff, but this is what happens when we find ourselves needing courts to sort out family matters. I fought hard to stay an involved father and to keep the family in-state where my job was successfully maturing. Following a 2 day trial I failed, and the children moved out-of-state against my wishes. I was left with an unsustainable parenting plan that involved a ridiculous amount of driving and the fallout of a hastily assembled financial agreement settled before the trial. This poorly worded and poorly understood agreement remained a source of problems for the next 10+ years.
Eventually I chose to relocate to CT to the same town my children lived in, compromising and eventually losing my now out-of-state job. While unemployed, I was unable to achieve a successful hearing to adjust child support and filed contempt of court charges while self-represented. Again facing a round of legal conflict I secured legal representation with Freed Marcroft and Seth was assigned to my case. It was one of the best decisions of my life.
Seth is both an exceptional lawyer and a person with integrity. Seth did an amazing job. He was easy to talk with, personable, and laser focused on sorting out legal arguments. What impressed me most about Seth was his ability to quickly see unproductive tangents for what they were: time consuming distractions that drive up legal costs and muddy the waters. Seth focused on key issues important to potential settlements or a judge's pending decisions. He was a rock star in the courtroom. Courteous, professional, and again laser focused. As a client, I also contributed significantly. I was honest and fully disclosed everything relevant to the case. I kept excellent records and made all of them available to Seth as needed. I was also an outstanding witness, speaking a truth fully consistent with all the supporting documentation. For 10+ years I did what was expected of me, and tried my best to stay on the high road. Finally it paid off. Following yet another 2 day trial the outcome was fully in my favor and reasonable adjustments immediately followed. My original contempt charges were upheld. I have no doubt that the legal advice I received, and the legal representation provided to me were key driving factors in this favorable outcome.
I highly recommend Seth to anyone who wants to take the high road and achieve fairness in their divorce settlement.

I hired attorney Ellson to handle my divorce case. By the time Laurel and I met I was already working with second attorney and felt that I needed to replace her urgently. Laurel made the transition very easy despite the lack of cooperation from my previous attorney. Laurel’s professional style is a unique combination of toughness and kindness. Most divorces are very draining emotionally and having a compassionate attorney by your side is a huge benefit. While being very kind and supportive towards me Laurel, at the same time, was reasonably demanding towards the other party. At times it felt that the case could have progressed quicker but it may be a general feeling when going through a divorce. Matthew was extremely helpful through the divorce process. He was able to help my now ex spouse and i come to agreements very quickly. Multiple times throughout the process i more or less broke down, however Attorney McGoldrick was willing to help with the emotional aspect as well. When I was going through a divorce a friend recommended Attorney Burnham and after interviewing 3 different attorneys, I found her to be the one I felt most comfortable working with. As a woman, I felt totally supported by her. She was well informed and kept me informed along the way.
