I’ve known Hector for years… my family has been living an ongoing nightmare for almost 3 years now, and we consulted him on the matter. Decided to retain him, and the case ended up being dropped. It didn’t go anywhere, never even set foot in court or even zoom court for that matter. We’d discussed the likelihood of getting any part of the $7500 retainer back at our initial consultation, and were assured we’d most likely see some return. Fast forward and now being told we get none of it back. He referenced the contract, and said the retainer is nonrefundable, however I do not find that information within the contract. We requested an itemized statement, which he was annoyed by, and days later when we received it, saw that a couple of listed items do not even make sense, and every item listed was charged at an in court rate. I genuinely feel like he played on the emotions, vulnerability and turmoil of myself and my family at the time we chose to retain him. It’s extremely disheartening to think that a friend would do this, considering that this case involved my daughter and grandson, two of the people closest to me that are my world.

Hector has been a friend of mine for over 10 years. I hired him for my personal injury case. It was a heartbreaking experience, poor communication, poor results on the case ,including his assistant Ray using salesman closing tactics on me . Overall waste of time.

He has insulted my intelligence! He has threatened me via emails and text messages. On a phone call with my husband, he told my husband that I will never see my children again and neither will he. This man has completely sabatoged my case! He has treated me very poorly and unfair because I am a woman and of the minority. He doesn't take the time to treat me with respect, he's extremely harsh especially when he gives information and makes it sound extremely horrible! He was upset with me when I reported him over 3 times to the San Antonio Bar Association and removed himself off my case/filed a Motion Of Continuance just because he personally felt upset. He's done nothing for me but make everything worse! Court appointed or not, Richard's services are the worst! I don't recommend him! He will lie to you and make you out to be the enemy! I pray that justice will be served for my family and I. I don't deserve this anymore and I'm speaking out! Richard doesn't like when you speak the truth against him, he will use it to his advantage and become vindictive!

I used Cynthia for my divorce and custody case, she was a little less expensive than the other consultation with another attorney... I got what I paid for. She didn't return my calls, emails or texts for months and when she finally did she claimed she never got my messages. I used a friends phone once and she answered right away but that didn't work after she had the number. She sat on paperwork, and then worded the decree incorrectly causing me to pay more money than I had to as well as having the attorney general put my child support payments on hold because of the verbiage being wrong on my decree so they couldn't send it to have the money taken from my ex husbands check. When I reached out to her I had to wait over a month to reach her and then she sat on the paperwork again and finally got to court several months later. She sent me a text saying the judged signed and she would send me the decree and my Q-Dro and I never received it nor was I able to reach her again. She was horrible!

My husband was appointed this C.A attorney. The way he spoke to him the first time they met was absolutely unprofessional and down right rude .He accused him of being high on cocaine ,I thought to myself why on earth is this guy so accusatory and so down right rude ,on the next c.d he lied and said he couldn't find my husband so he left .I'm greatful to the kind officer who witnessed the incident,my husband was sitting in front row waiting on his attorney like he was told.So my husband decided against using him and will be retaining new council on his new set date for court .In my opinion ,who wants someone against you and who lies on you to represent you for ANYTHING ESPECIALLY WHEN YOUR PRECIOUS LIFE IS AT RISK ,any amount of time is too much.

Very very disappointed in this firm. They handled my case for the Camp Fire Victims Trust. The last phone call I had with them, they were still misunderstanding my case, and I decided to make an appeal to make sure all the facts were considered by the Trust. I received no response from the paralegal Cindy Wilson, or my case manager Brandy, for the three months before that final determination. I have no idea what they submitted, or why my initial concerns with the Determination were never addressed. This was after they misinterpreted the compensation requirements so badly for my case, that I would have received 3k instead of the final amount, 30k, until I busted down their doors to get them to fix the errors. Horrible communication. I was guilted by my case manager every time I reached out to her, and blamed for all my own confusion and concerns. If they were kind to me and keeping me informed throughout the process, my review would be different even though i didnt recieve fair compensation in the end.

Due to major medical errors by my orthopedic surgeon, I am now living with the most painful chronic disease known to mankind. Our land/property attorney referred me to Samuel W. Royston to handle a medical malpractice case for me. We received NO communication from him for almost a year, other than through our property attorney. He never followed through with anything and deserves no less then a ZERO star rating. Because of his unprofessional attitude and lack communication, our case lapsed past the time when it was no longer a viable case. When he finally met with us, it was simply to apologize for not doing his job and to inform us that our time to file a suit had passed. Of course we were cognizant that there was a time limit, therefore our experience with Mr. Royston was an exercise in futility from beginning to end. Both my husband and myself would strongly suggest that you look elsewhere for an attorney.

I hired Norma Gonzalez in 2014 for a divorce. She required a $5000 deposit. She assisted with filing the initial papers. We never made an appointment to the court since I reconciled with my spouse. we had some exchanges via email mostly with her assistant. Once reconciled I advised her services were no longer needed and requested itemization of billing and refund if due. I received no response other than billing would look at it. This is after multiple inquires. It's been about a year now. Still waiting. Norma has contacted me since then to support her campaign and donate. I would not vote for her. I feel money is owed to me. My husband did receive a refund from his lawyer and he put down the same amount for down payment. I would not recommend.

I hired this lawyer 2 yrs ago and still don't know where this case stands. The other party's lawyer excused themselves from the case and I don't know what that means to me. Do I still have a case, is the case over? I tried to ask via email, letter, and phone call and still have not received a response. As soon as the opposition asked for documents, this lawyer was real fast to submit paperwork to them without consulting with me first. She told me after the fact that she had supplied the asked for documents to Opposition. I submitted all documents that I thought would help my cause, even created spreadsheets to help lessen the time she or her staff would have to spend creating a spreadsheet themselves. I don't think she ever looked at the documents I supplied. I sent a letter requesting a face to face meeting and 3 weeks later have still not gotten a response or appointment to speak to her. I don't know what else to do.

I was referred to Fidel Rodriguez by a former client after a car accident and he managed to keep most of the money and basically drag my life down the drain and never get any result for anyone but himself. When I fired him, he CONTINUED to do business that I explicitly told him not to do and completely violated me. After 7 months of being lied to and manipulated by MY OWN ATTORNEY, I fired him and hired someone else. It wasn't until I got out of his grasp and got ACTUAL medical attention that I figured out that my brain injury was REAL and the doctors Rodriguez has on staff are all in on this scam with him. DO NOT HIRE THIS ATTORNEY! He ultimately got me $14,000 and kept 30,000+. He's so petty that when I fired him, he actually returned money he had in his hand to the insurance company instead of turning it over to me.

Family Law. I am a father who had a favorable social study and custody from 5/04 to 3/06. This attorney never presented our case before a judge. My ex-spouse had her cousin go to CPS and accuse me and my son of abuse to our youngest. Ruled out in less than two months. Advice of Lawyer was to give her custody. I never received child support. This CPS false allegations are common in custody cases. I do not recommend this lawyer for any task. I will be happy to give more details.

After several phone calls to find out why Ms. Maloney would not return my calls, some assistant got on the phone and told me she was not interested in handling my case. She refused to speak with me to at least explain why she would not handle the case, and her assistant Eileen also refused to speak with me again to explain why Ms. Maloney would not handle the case. At this point, I would not hire Ms. Maloney to handle a traffic ticket, much less a medical malpractice case with good merits. I would not recommend her to anyone who needs any type of legal help.

Roy G. Franco charged my sister 1000.00 to represent me. He sent lawyer George B. Dombart to represent me AFTER I HAD POSTED MY OWN BOND AND ARRANGED MY OWN DEFENSE WHEN I WAS RELEASED. I had never met with either attorney before I had my first court appearance and was shocked when George B. Dombart appeared instead of the public defender that I had previously requested and qualified for. I fired attorney Dombart on the spot and arranged to hire a new attorney who successfully brought in witnesses who testified to my innocence and the charges against me were dismissed and the case was closed. The reason I adamantly declined anyone associated with Mr. Franco is that he has a history of alcohol abuse, and even admitted to the use of illegal drugs. He had harassed me earlier about my religious/faith practices during unsolicited late night phone calls in which his speech was slurred and his temperament was bizarre. He also spread misinformation about me to our family members. Mr. Franco now refuses to take my phone calls, as well as my sister’s. He also refuses to return voice messages left on his answering machine. He has not responded to letters of demand for reimbursement of the 1000.00 that were sent via certified mail. Mr. Dombart, his associate, has behaved the same and my sister and I have filed formal grievance with the State Bar of Texas.

Finally, he does more damage to poor uneducated immigrants cases than assist their sorry situation, using "Pro-Bono" to lure these unsuspecting already traumatized immigrants is unethical, selfish and inhuman which circumvents the basic principle of fundamental human rights.

What a Personal Injury Lawyer Can Do for You

A personal injury lawyer specializes in helping individuals who have been physically or emotionally injured due to the negligence or wrongful actions of another party. Whether you've been hurt in a car accident, suffered a slip and fall, or experienced medical malpractice, a personal injury attorney works to ensure you receive fair compensation for your injuries. They can help you recover damages for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other related expenses.

Personal injury lawyers act as your advocate, navigating the legal system on your behalf and dealing with insurance companies to ensure you get the compensation you deserve. They understand how to handle complex legal matters and help you avoid common pitfalls.

When Should I Hire a Personal Injury Lawyer?

Hiring a personal injury lawyer can be beneficial in many situations where you've been harmed due to another's negligence. Some key scenarios include:

  • Severe injuries: If you've suffered significant or permanent injuries that result in substantial medical bills, a lawyer can help ensure you are fairly compensated.
  • Long-term or permanent disability: Injuries that affect your ability to work or require ongoing medical treatment are complex, and a lawyer can help estimate long-term damages.
  • Disputed liability: If the responsible party or their insurance company denies liability for your injury, a lawyer can gather evidence and advocate on your behalf.
  • Insurance company lowball offers: Insurers often try to settle personal injury claims for as little as possible. A lawyer can negotiate to get you a fair settlement.
  • Medical malpractice claims: Injuries caused by a doctor, nurse, or healthcare provider due to negligence require a personal injury lawyer experienced in medical malpractice law.
  • Exposure to hazardous substances: If you've been injured due to exposure to toxins, chemicals, or dangerous substances, a lawyer can help pursue legal action.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process is crucial, especially if you're unsure of the full extent of your injuries or damages.

What Does a Personal Injury Lawyer Do?

A personal injury lawyer provides a wide range of services to guide you through the legal process and maximize your compensation. They can:

  • Evaluate your case: A lawyer will assess the strength of your claim and determine whether you have a viable case.
  • Investigate the incident: Gathering evidence such as police reports, witness statements, medical records, and expert opinions is key to building a strong case.
  • Negotiate with insurance companies: Lawyers handle communications with insurance companies to ensure you receive a fair settlement and aren't taken advantage of.
  • File a lawsuit if necessary: If a fair settlement can't be reached, the lawyer can file a personal injury lawsuit on your behalf and represent you in court.
  • Help calculate damages: This includes medical expenses, lost wages, future medical needs, pain and suffering, and emotional distress.
  • Prepare and file legal documents: Lawyers handle all the paperwork and deadlines associated with your case, including filing motions and discovery requests.
  • Represent you at trial: If your case goes to trial, the lawyer will argue your case before a judge and jury to obtain the compensation you deserve.

How Are Personal Injury Lawyers Paid?

Most personal injury lawyers work on a contingency fee basis. This means they only get paid if they win your case, either through settlement or a court judgment. Here’s how it works:

  • Contingency fee percentage: The lawyer will take a percentage of the settlement or award, typically between 25% and 40%, depending on the complexity of the case and the stage at which it's resolved.
  • Costs and expenses: In addition to the contingency fee, the lawyer may deduct other costs associated with the case, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, and court costs. These expenses are often advanced by the lawyer and repaid out of the settlement.
  • No upfront payment: Since the lawyer’s fee is contingent on winning, you usually don’t pay anything upfront.

Always discuss the lawyer’s fee structure during your consultation to avoid surprises.

How Much Does a Personal Injury Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a personal injury lawyer depends on the specifics of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure. However, since most personal injury lawyers work on a contingency fee basis, the amount you pay will depend on the outcome of your case. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Contingency fees: Typically range from 25% to 40% of the settlement or award. The percentage may increase if the case goes to trial or requires an appeal.
  • Other costs: In addition to the lawyer's fee, you may be responsible for case-related expenses such as expert witness fees, medical record retrieval fees, and court costs. These are often deducted from your settlement, so you won't have to pay out of pocket.

While the cost may seem high, hiring an experienced lawyer can significantly increase the amount you recover, making it a worthwhile investment.

Top Questions to Ask a Personal Injury Lawyer

Before hiring a personal injury lawyer, it's essential to ask questions to ensure you’re choosing the right representation. Here are some important questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with personal injury cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has handled cases involving similar injuries or accidents.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a contingency fee and what percentage they will take from any settlement or award.
  3. How long will my case take?
While it's hard to predict, a lawyer can give you an estimate based on similar cases they’ve handled.
  4. How often do you take cases to trial?
Some lawyers prefer to settle quickly, while others are more comfortable going to court if necessary.
  5. Will you personally handle my case?
In larger firms, junior lawyers or paralegals may handle some aspects of your case, so it's important to know who will be managing your claim.
  6. Do you have references from past clients?
Speaking with past clients can provide valuable insight into the lawyer’s effectiveness and professionalism.

How to Check the Credibility of a Personal Injury Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a credible personal injury lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any history of disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Online platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, and Google reviews can provide insight into the lawyer's reputation and client satisfaction.
  • Look at their track record: Review their experience with personal injury cases, particularly how many cases they’ve successfully resolved or taken to trial.
  • Ask for references: Credible lawyers should be willing to provide references from past clients who can vouch for their work.
  • Check professional memberships: Lawyers who are members of respected organizations, like the American Association for Justice (AAJ), often have a solid reputation in the field.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with a personal injury lawyer, prepare the following:

  • Detailed account of the accident: Write down everything you remember about the incident, including dates, times, and locations. Include any witnesses or police reports if available.
  • Medical records and bills: Bring any documentation of your injuries, treatments, and associated medical costs.
  • Insurance information: Provide your insurance details and any communication you’ve had with the other party’s insurance company.
  • Employment and income records: If your injury has impacted your ability to work, bring proof of lost wages or reduced earning capacity.
  • Photos or videos: If you have photos of the accident scene, your injuries, or property damage, bring them to your consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare a list of questions to ask, including how the lawyer will handle your case and what you can expect in terms of timeline and outcome.

By preparing thoroughly for your first consultation, you’ll help the lawyer understand your case more quickly and get a better sense of your legal options.
