I have been a realtor for 22 years and have never had an experience with a law office like the one my client and I went through with this firm. They do not answer their phone their voicemails or their emails. Needless to say we did not close on time. This was unprofessional and unacceptable. I do not recommend this law firm for any real estate transaction you may have as a realtor or buyer or seller.

Kathryn (Katie) Bissonette of Brown Paindiris & Scott, LLP mediated my divorce with my wife (now ex-wife). She was professional and genuinely worked for an amicable and fair separation between my wife and I. Comparing notes with other couples who divorced, the process was 100 time easier than if we did not have a mediator. It was affordable too.

Several main problems that I can go through in detail by memory. My first impression was of her berating a young intern or employee to the point of tears in public. Then I learned it wasn't just employees, it was clients. Eldercare clients. Then I learned it included me, an eldercare client paying $600.00 hour for a snapping turtle. Every time she snapped, I took it, though t about it and said to myself I have no idea what caused that. At the third meeting she did it again to someone else and I said "Wait a minute, you are not a criminal lawyer, we are not criiminals. We are also also not rich and no more of this at your $600 an hour What kind of eldercare attorney talks to their eldercare clients? She replied dismissively that technically my 90 year old mother was her client. Now just think about that for a minute and see if you can think of a worse possible reply in a courtroom. She's basically saying my 90 year old mother is safe from her barbs but that the children attempting to pay for it are fare game. Not at $600 an hour were not! Recently asked for a simple line item accounting of meetings held and was informed by an employee after consulting with her that the "file had been shred", Why don't you give me a call because you've been too afraid to talk to me. On the other hand she gives pleasant little radio talks. No problems whatsoever with the staff. And the infamous weakness of a snapping turtle is a weak underbelly.......

My experience with Attorney Drew was extremely positive. I found Mr. Drew to be very responsive, professional, and reasonable in terms of expenses. My mother's estate turned out to be much more complicated than we expected, and the CT Department of Social Services was unusually thorough and sometimes difficult to deal with, but with Mr. Drew's assistance, we reached a very positive outcome. His assistance was invaluable and he did a great job in advocating the interests of my mom.

I’m an unsatisfied client of Tom Drew who I hired for Estate Planning. He didn’t invest the time or have patience to properly educate us about his estate plans and was intolerant to accommodate and address our concerns. His estate plan could have been better formatted with articles headings, an index, more definitions and key words notations to easily reference subjects and to facilitate comprehension. We couldn't go forward with the estate plans he submitted. The relationship was terminated and not in a pleasant manner. We lost our $2,215 advance.

This attorney is immoral. He takes no personal responsibility or accountability for his practice. He represented a seller in a closing on an investment purchase of mine. Failed to withhold a 1700$ water bill out of sale proceeds on the HUD (his offices job). We verified dollar amount and requested payment and now over a year later I personally had to pay for his mistake and file a title insurance policy claim which will not cover entire amount. What a hack job law office. Immoral. And unaccountable his office should have paid and made a claim to their insurance for their own negligence to their client to properly produce the closing statement. Period. Its a cut and dry issue. Need an attorney? Look elsewhere.

I love Attorney Owen Eagen, I had a great experience. Unfortunately not so much with the staff. I had mistakenly lost a check that the office had given me during a closing. The check was part of the closing. On May 25th I went directly to the office and the front desk lady came to the screen and made me feel line a second class citizen. Than told me to walk to the side of the door while she open the door to talk with me. I understand covid and I work in a public place but again felt like a second class citizen. I understand everyone is careful. All I wanted was prompt service. If I had a closing I might have been treated better, I sent several emails and only one was returned. Not very nice. I work in banking and as a Branch Manager my customer whether right or wrong we always do our best to treat them with world class service. I am very disappointed, As much as I felt Attorney Eagen is professional and did a nice job on my closing. I feel his staff could have treated me a bit nicer.

Only those with unreasonable expectations believe that simply getting a "paid" lawyer is the end all be all of judicial magic and that everything will come up roses. I was hesitant with other lawyers and once I spoke to Brian. I felt instantly ready to move forward. Everything he told me happened and anything that he was unsure on Brian found out same hour. He truly helped me in moment I wasn’t confident taking on. He saved me money throughout the process and overall I came out on top. I cannot thank Brian and his team enough. I can say in the beginning he was very knowledgeable seemed like he wanted to help protect me and my special needs child. Towards the end just seems like he did not care anymore he knew exactly what was happening, the fact that my supposed victim I threatened me and my child, was a known drug dealer, known to be married and frauding the government, proven to lie directly to a judge.the fact that she was I was told this is not substantial to my case. But then was told by several different attorneys it should have been included. The fact that he said I shouldn't have been arrested but did nothing about it as he was not at my arraignment. Seems when I got another attorney to ask him questions everything kind of went sideways as I was being told by Mr young one thing and being proven by different attorneys that was not the case. I spent my life savings trying to protect my special needs child that Mr Young knew was in very realistic possible danger period yeah he did nothing to prove my innocence just question me as if I was the bad guy never directly answering questions

I trusted Atty. Hadaway with my mother's money. My opinion is that her work was sloppy, and her communication quite poor. My opinion is that her wrong advise wound up costing me (besides the $9000 retainer) an additional $6500, and this would have been more if I didn't consult another lawyer who took 5 minutes to correct Attorney Hadaway's reckless advice. It is also my opinion that when I confronted her about these issues, she danced around them. I would have appreciated a little humility however instead I received arrogant replies questioning my memory. She even has the audacity to infer that my mother was of ne help to her...so cruel and insulting since she knew my mother was in a long tern care nursing facility-which was why I met with office in the first place. It's a wonderful thing when you do business with someone and your experience is so positive, refreshing and so rewarding that you can't want to share your experiences with family and friends. I can't tell everyone how poor my experience was, and most of all really disgusted by the consistent feeling of arrogance over integrity I felt I received by Attorney Hadaway.

Attorney Hadaway was a true blessing for our family. Not only was she a pleasure to work with but she gave us the confidence to negotiate a very difficult process with as little stress as possible. She was very comforting, assuring us that she'd "let us know when it was time to worry" - we never needed to. She handled everything and was amazing. Her guidance was invaluable to us. My parents were living at home and required care for daily activities. The need to manage assets, screen long-term care facilities and understand elder law and how it applies to them was paramount. We reached out to Attorney Tully for support in understanding elder care law and hired him at our first meeting. The depth of expertise in elder care law and his ability to simplify it to make sense to us was obvious and continued throughout. Attorney Tully and his staff prepared applications (Veteran's Administration and Title 19) and answered our many questions as we worked through the process. This included managing my parents assets to comply with applicable elder care law. There were numerous face-to-face meetings and conference calls. I should mention that our contract with Attorney included a lump sum payment which, while expensive, was worthwhile. My parents are in a long term care facility. Though terms of the contract have been met Attorney Tully and staff are still available to answer questions. Attorney Tully was often delayed in returning calls and responding to requests for for information. The best way to reach him was by requesting a meeting. His support staff was exceptional in responding to questions and requests for information.

I could not disagree more with the gentleman that posted prior to this. In most cases the client plays a huge role in the attorney/client relationship. Enough said! I hired Atty Erickson to represent me in a complex estate case. She is extremely knowlegable, compassionate, warm, friendly, organized, on her game and above all ETHICAL. There are times when I have dragged my feet for health/work related issues and she has been more than kind and patient. In fact, I will probably hire her again for my personal estate planning. She is 10 steps above the so called hi-powered atty I hired in Hartfort to represent me in another estate case. I have had both bad and great representation. If I could give Atty Erickson 10 stars I would. This gentleman's comment is far and wide not representative of what I have experienced. I don't typically write reviews, but I caught this review when I was looking up my atty's phone number. It irked me so much I decided to take the time out of my busy schedule to post a reflection of my experience. I am all about fair and that comment is most unfair and atypical, I'm sure. The public needs to hear from someone who sees things very differently.

I paid Atty Levin 6 months ago for a mutually agreed price for services. Since that time communication has been sparse, services were not rendered and requests for refund have been ignored.

I contacted Atty. Levin in April of 2023 regarding a matter. I chose her having friends, and relatives that know her as well as growing up with her family members. I received a text back a month later after speaking to her saying lets do this. I received texts on June 5, June 19, and July 14 saying she would contact me to meet. She was a no call no show on every scheduled meet. I was told after the last scheduled meet and blow she didn't deserve my response which was if I was blown off again it would be the last time and I would seek representation elsewhere. Atty Levin told me via text that day she would return my paperwork so I could seek representation elsewhere. It has been 22 days so far and I am still waiting for the paperwork. Text, calls, etc go unanswered. Hopefully others will have a better experience.

Jill was a very nice person and a pleasure to meet with when you were able to. She was very poor about getting back to you or returning calls, it could be weeks even months before hearing from her . I was Chad for things she said I wasn't going to be. She was a forgetful attorney and I did most of my own case work. In court she is a non aggressive attorney not helpful to your case she settles easy don't fight for you. Just not a tough art for these cases. I felt defeated way before the end. And I am still waiting for a follow up on a second part of 1 case called twice & emailed still no reply. I believe I've always treated her friendly, accommodating, polite. She is nice but I wouldn't go back sorry.

What a Probate Lawyer Can Do for You

A probate lawyer assists with the legal process of administering a deceased person’s estate. This often involves guiding executors (if a will exists) or beneficiaries (if no will exists) through the probate process to settle the estate according to the deceased’s wishes or applicable laws. Probate lawyers can help validate the will, distribute assets, resolve disputes among heirs, handle outstanding debts or taxes, and ensure the estate is legally and efficiently administered.

Whether you’re an executor of an estate or an heir facing probate proceedings, a probate lawyer can help you navigate the often-complex legal process to ensure the estate is settled correctly.

When Should I Hire a Probate Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a probate lawyer when you are responsible for managing the estate of a deceased individual, especially in the following situations:

  • The estate has substantial assets: If the estate includes significant assets like real estate, investments, or business interests, legal assistance is often necessary to handle the distribution properly.
  • The will is being contested: If there are disputes among heirs regarding the validity of the will or the division of assets, a probate lawyer can help resolve the conflict.
  • The estate includes complex or unclear provisions: If the will contains complicated instructions or there are no clear beneficiaries, a lawyer can ensure that the estate is administered according to legal requirements.
  • There is no will (intestate estate): When a person dies without a will, the estate is subject to intestacy laws, which determine how assets are distributed. A probate lawyer can help navigate this process.
  • Debt or tax issues exist: If the estate owes significant debts or is subject to estate taxes, a probate lawyer can help ensure debts are paid appropriately and taxes are minimized.
  • Probate disputes: If family members or other parties are disputing the distribution of assets or challenging the executor's actions, legal representation is crucial to defending your rights and ensuring the estate is handled properly.

Hiring a probate lawyer early in the process can help avoid costly mistakes and ensure the estate is settled efficiently.

What Does a Probate Lawyer Do?

A probate lawyer provides a wide range of legal services to help manage and settle an estate. Their tasks can include:

  • Validating the will: Filing the will with the probate court and ensuring its legal validity.
  • Guiding executors or administrators: Advising the person responsible for managing the estate on their duties, including inventorying assets, notifying creditors, and paying debts.
  • Filing necessary paperwork: Preparing and submitting the legal documents required to initiate and complete the probate process.
  • Resolving disputes: Mediating or litigating disputes among heirs or between beneficiaries and executors, including challenges to the will or disagreements over asset distribution.
  • Handling debt and tax matters: Ensuring that outstanding debts, taxes, and estate taxes are properly calculated and paid from the estate’s assets.
  • Distributing assets: Ensuring that assets are distributed to the beneficiaries according to the will or intestacy laws, and that all legal requirements are fulfilled.
  • Closing the estate: Completing the final steps of the probate process, including filing a final accounting with the court and formally closing the estate.

How Are Probate Lawyers Paid?

Probate lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the estate and the nature of the legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Most probate lawyers charge by the hour, with rates depending on the lawyer’s experience and the complexity of the estate. Hourly rates can range from $150 to $500 or more.
  • Flat fee: For simple estates or straightforward probate tasks, some lawyers may charge a flat fee that covers all of the necessary legal work.
  • Percentage of the estate: In some states, probate lawyers are allowed to charge a percentage of the estate's value as their fee. This percentage typically ranges from 2% to 5%, depending on the size of the estate and state regulations.
  • Retainer fee: Some lawyers may require an upfront retainer fee, which is billed against as the probate process progresses.

It’s important to clarify the fee structure during your initial consultation to understand how you will be charged and avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does a Probate Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a probate lawyer depends on several factors, including the complexity of the estate, the type of legal issues involved, and the lawyer’s fee structure. General cost estimates include:

  • Simple estates: For estates with straightforward assets and no disputes, probate legal fees can range from $2,500 to $10,000, depending on the lawyer's fees and the state's probate laws.
  • Complex estates: For larger or more complicated estates with multiple properties, business interests, or disputes, probate costs can exceed $10,000 and may reach $20,000 or more.
  • Hourly rates: If charged by the hour, expect rates between $150 and $500, depending on the lawyer’s expertise and geographic location.
  • Percentage fees: In some cases, a probate lawyer may charge 2% to 5% of the estate’s value, particularly for larger estates or those involving complex legal matters.

Always ask for a clear estimate of fees during your initial consultation to understand the total cost of probate representation.

Top Questions to Ask a Probate Lawyer

Before hiring a probate lawyer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure you’re hiring someone qualified to handle your estate needs. Key questions include:

  1. What experience do you have with probate cases like mine?
Ensure the lawyer has experience with estates of similar complexity, especially if disputes or high-value assets are involved.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Ask whether the lawyer charges an hourly rate, a flat fee, or a percentage of the estate, and request a cost estimate.
  3. What is the likely timeline for my probate case?
While it’s hard to predict exactly, an experienced lawyer can give you a general idea of how long the probate process may take based on the specifics of your estate.
  4. What steps will you take to manage and distribute the estate?
Ask about the lawyer’s approach to handling debts, taxes, and asset distribution.
  5. Will you be handling my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may handle some aspects of your case, so it’s important to know who will be working on your probate case.
  6. What are potential challenges we may face?
A good lawyer will be able to anticipate possible issues, such as will contests or creditor claims, and explain how they would handle them.

How to Check the Credibility of a Probate Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a reputable probate lawyer, follow these steps to check their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their state bar status: Check with your state’s bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary action.
  • Look for probate experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in probate law and have experience handling estates of similar complexity.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for online reviews on platforms like Avvo or Martindale-Hubbell to see what past clients have said about the lawyer’s probate experience.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who can vouch for their professionalism and expertise in handling probate matters.
  • Look for membership in professional organizations: Membership in organizations like the American Academy of Estate Planning Attorneys (AAEPA) or the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) can indicate a lawyer's commitment to estate and probate law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with a probate lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • A copy of the will or trust (if applicable): Bring any estate planning documents left by the deceased, including wills, trusts, or powers of attorney.
  • List of assets and debts: Prepare a detailed list of the deceased’s assets (e.g., real estate, bank accounts, investments) and outstanding debts (e.g., loans, mortgages, credit cards).
  • Death certificate: Bring a certified copy of the deceased person’s death certificate.
  • Contact information for heirs and beneficiaries: Have a list of all individuals or entities named in the will or who are entitled to inherit under intestacy laws.
  • Questions about the probate process: Write down any questions you have about the process, costs, and potential issues you might face.
  • Relevant financial records: If available, bring any relevant financial documents, such as bank statements, property deeds, and tax returns.

By coming prepared, you can ensure a productive consultation and allow the lawyer to provide the best advice for your situation.
