I hired Nicole to help with family law matter. She showed up for important dates but was unresponsive to emails, calls and texts any other time. Sometimes I wouldn't hear from her for a month. She seems extremely busy with her personal life which is fine but she shouldn't be practicing if she doesn't have the availability to help her clients

I hired Nicole to represent me in a legal matter. I am very dissatisfied with her services because of her lack of knowledge & experience. On multiple occasions it took Nicole days & sometimes weeks just to respond to a text, email, or phone call. She works a full time job & tries to practice law on the side which interfered on the time she could work on my case. She caused unnecessary stress on me & my family because at times she really didn’t know what she was doing & got in way over her head. I would definitely recommend anybody to do your research & hire a knowledgeable attorney with years of experience. Overall i think Nicole was a nice person & tried, but I my only intentions was to hire a knowledgeable attorney that can get the job done with minimum stress which she did not do.

Having worked in the design and construction field for nearly 30 years, unfortunately conflicts occur and clients are late paying their bills. Rob McNevin has helped our firm numerous times to address issues and has always been upmost professional and aggressively fought to protect our rights. Highly recommend.

I hired the service of the lawyer McNevin to represent me, due to the pandemic the communication with the lawyer was by email and we only spoke by phone the day I contacted him to hire him and another time that he needed a little more information about my case, during the procedure of the case Mr. McNevin forwarded to me the emails that the lawyer of my opponents sent to him, after a few months Mr. McNevin told me that the only solution to my case was to reach an agreement that there was no way to win and that I had to cede the rights to my opponents, therefore Mr. McNevin and I met for the first time to sign the necessary documents in that meeting the lawyer of my opponents was also present, Mr. McNevin was late to the meeting and with a very bad appearance, he looked like he just woken up, during the meeting Mr. McNevin dared to tell the other lawyer that he did not know anything about the type of case he was dealing with, I was surprised that Mr. McNevin said that in my presence and all the people who were present, because he was supposed to help me and represent me, which meant that I only paid him $2,340 for nothing , because in the end I had to give in to my opponents what they asked for, it was a terrible experience.

Robert was hired to represent our firm in a subcontractor breach of contract dispute on 7/6/2016. He was a lifesaver for our business and we owe a debt of gratitude to him for his service since he helped us out in a pinch when we were rushed to find new representation to avoid adverse consequences. He is a solid excellent lawyer who practices nothing but high ethics. Also, he is a very thorough and competent professional who always had my company's best interests in mind. I was always informed of the truth when Robert was our attorney (whether I liked it or not) and I always felt like our company was in very good hands. He never missed a scheduled meeting and he always took my calls. Together as a team, we cleared the complex cloud on a property and we were able to get ALL undisputed subcontractors paid. Ultimately, we successfully settled with the disputed subcontractor at a reasonable amount and our firm now is free and clear from all lawsuits. Thanks Rob!

Terrible, terrible, terrible. Fred Scott took $7000 of my husband’s money to “help” him with tax issues and did absolutely nothing. On top of it, he referred us to a tax firm who not only charged an arm and a leg for nothing, then refused to return calls and e-mails. Would NOT recommend. At all.

She was totally rude and very unprofessional! She did not do her job for my son. Me him literally at plea deal, not seeing him again since his sentencing. Did not do her job, called nobody to the stand on my son's defense. I wish I would have read the reviews before we paid $7,000. Please never ever ever choose her!

Can not recommend. 3 phone calls with Mr. Sullivan or his office, and zero progress resolving an issue. Constantly giving me, and my business the runaround, costing me $8,000. Feels like he is operating in bad faith, or just trying to keep his billable hours up.

When you first meet Patrick he seems like a go-getter and he wants to fight in court but after you get him and he's on your case you can't hardly get a hold of him I have called him three times within the last 8 days without any return calls and his phone was not working for a week before that I don't know what happened to it and he seems like he is working with the lawyer on the other side for their cause instead of my cause so if you're looking for somebody that's going to be on your side and fight for you and talk to you. better go somewhere else he is making a large sum of money from us and we are very disappointed in his ability to speak with his clients and overall performance

Will not recommend this firm. They charge attorney time for sending approval letters, confirming your home address etc for petitions that they filed and charged for filing fee already. They have a lot of hidden costs which quickly keeps adding up.

I am new to the area and needed to consult an attorney regarding a tax issue that I am facing related to a divorce. Mr. Dible was rude and disrespectful. I tried to ask questions but was continuously interrupted. He voiced that he did not like this type of work and usually would not handle a case like this. Dr. Dible was condescending. I would never recommend him for any type of legal work.

We hired Jeffery to help us when my father died suddenly with no will . He said that in would take about a week to get approved for executor of his estate well it took weeks . Every time I called the office for help I either got answering machine or his assistant Jade . That is when they were in the office . Never returned my phone's calls would not help me remove my brother from the property. When I told his after weeks and weeks of calling that I was going to fire him he sends me a letter saying that I refused to give him a list of my father's belongings. That's a lie I have it and he never asked for it but he never even talked to me he is not a good attorney he never calls clients back never in his office his assistant knows nothing . I don't think he deserves any stars .He tells you he will help you but he does nothing. 0

Hired as fiduciary to direct and close an estate. She doesn't seem knowledgeable with what is needed to take care of a large estate. Lack of communication, make many mistakes with the accounting, wasted our money with lawyers and blamed us for many of her mistakes. She said it would take 1-2 months, we are now into the 15th month. DO NOT HIRE!

I first encountered this attorney when my father had her do his will years ago. I then had her do mine. She seemed fairly knowledgeable but somewhat unfriendly, business oriented, not very chatty. As the years progressed, I used other resources regarding my will and had no contact with her until recently. My father had her create a trust as well as his will. In the last couple of years we had seen a marked deterioration in his health mentally. He was not paying bills. He was very forgetful, confused, always losing things. He was exhibiting the early signs of dementia. I was working with the doctor trying to have him evaluated, trying to get him some help. I was not trying to put him in a nursing home. I just wanted to offer him some help so that he could stay in his house and live comfortably. His family doctor actually said he thought it was dementia and he needed further evaluation. But the neurologist refused to call it that thus tying my hands somewhat. Without a doctor stepping forward and saying so I could not legally pay his bills or anything else! I called Aline for help thinking she might have some suggestions, some resources for us to consider. She was rather sharp with me and said there was nothing we could do. She offered no help, no advice. She said she was very busy and told me that I could make an appointment if I needed to talk to her. This was sometime in early 2012. I actually went to see her in person later that year and she was basically the same with me then. She told me what she charged by the hour and said if I wanted to schedule an appointment she would talk to me then. Otherwise, she could not talk to me. Now, I understood that I just showed up. I understood that she was busy. But I live out of state and didn't exactly have the convenience of scheduling an appointment and coming back. I needed some help then. I thought maybe, under the circumstances, she might see me.

We hired this lawyer to represent our firm in a subcontractor breach of contract dispute on 1/18/2016. We then proceeded to an unsuccessful mediation with the subcontractor. I hired the lawyer since he was considered a mediation expert by his peers but after the unsuccessful mediation, I would disagree. Thereafter he withdrew as my attorney mainly because he wanted me to settle for a large amount of money without providing a viable reason to settle. When I hired him initially, I was very clear that we may proceed with the trial if we had an unsuccessful mediation. By him withdrawing without a good and specific reason made us look unfavorable to the judge. The judge thought something had to be wrong with us as the client when the lawyer withdrew from the case. It also left us very vulnerable where we had to rush to find new representation when we needed dire help to avoid adverse consequences. Also, this lawyer did not take the time to help solve our problem. We had to come up with our own solution which cleared the cloud on the property and we were able to get ALL undisputed subs paid. Ultimately, we did successfully settle with the disputed sub but at a much lower amount with a highly ethical and experienced lawyer. Can a lawyer withdraw from a case? Yes, but this can create ethical issues when I believe this lawyer withdrew for other reasons unknown and unclear. Disagreement of when to settle should not be used as an excuse to withdraw from a case. Unless the client is willfully refusing to pay or there are reasons which are more specific which both parties fundamentally disagree, I believe that the attorney has an obligation, ethical or moral, to finish out the representation.

What a Probate Lawyer Can Do for You

A probate lawyer assists with the legal process of administering a deceased person’s estate. This often involves guiding executors (if a will exists) or beneficiaries (if no will exists) through the probate process to settle the estate according to the deceased’s wishes or applicable laws. Probate lawyers can help validate the will, distribute assets, resolve disputes among heirs, handle outstanding debts or taxes, and ensure the estate is legally and efficiently administered.

Whether you’re an executor of an estate or an heir facing probate proceedings, a probate lawyer can help you navigate the often-complex legal process to ensure the estate is settled correctly.

When Should I Hire a Probate Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a probate lawyer when you are responsible for managing the estate of a deceased individual, especially in the following situations:

  • The estate has substantial assets: If the estate includes significant assets like real estate, investments, or business interests, legal assistance is often necessary to handle the distribution properly.
  • The will is being contested: If there are disputes among heirs regarding the validity of the will or the division of assets, a probate lawyer can help resolve the conflict.
  • The estate includes complex or unclear provisions: If the will contains complicated instructions or there are no clear beneficiaries, a lawyer can ensure that the estate is administered according to legal requirements.
  • There is no will (intestate estate): When a person dies without a will, the estate is subject to intestacy laws, which determine how assets are distributed. A probate lawyer can help navigate this process.
  • Debt or tax issues exist: If the estate owes significant debts or is subject to estate taxes, a probate lawyer can help ensure debts are paid appropriately and taxes are minimized.
  • Probate disputes: If family members or other parties are disputing the distribution of assets or challenging the executor's actions, legal representation is crucial to defending your rights and ensuring the estate is handled properly.

Hiring a probate lawyer early in the process can help avoid costly mistakes and ensure the estate is settled efficiently.

What Does a Probate Lawyer Do?

A probate lawyer provides a wide range of legal services to help manage and settle an estate. Their tasks can include:

  • Validating the will: Filing the will with the probate court and ensuring its legal validity.
  • Guiding executors or administrators: Advising the person responsible for managing the estate on their duties, including inventorying assets, notifying creditors, and paying debts.
  • Filing necessary paperwork: Preparing and submitting the legal documents required to initiate and complete the probate process.
  • Resolving disputes: Mediating or litigating disputes among heirs or between beneficiaries and executors, including challenges to the will or disagreements over asset distribution.
  • Handling debt and tax matters: Ensuring that outstanding debts, taxes, and estate taxes are properly calculated and paid from the estate’s assets.
  • Distributing assets: Ensuring that assets are distributed to the beneficiaries according to the will or intestacy laws, and that all legal requirements are fulfilled.
  • Closing the estate: Completing the final steps of the probate process, including filing a final accounting with the court and formally closing the estate.

How Are Probate Lawyers Paid?

Probate lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the estate and the nature of the legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Most probate lawyers charge by the hour, with rates depending on the lawyer’s experience and the complexity of the estate. Hourly rates can range from $150 to $500 or more.
  • Flat fee: For simple estates or straightforward probate tasks, some lawyers may charge a flat fee that covers all of the necessary legal work.
  • Percentage of the estate: In some states, probate lawyers are allowed to charge a percentage of the estate's value as their fee. This percentage typically ranges from 2% to 5%, depending on the size of the estate and state regulations.
  • Retainer fee: Some lawyers may require an upfront retainer fee, which is billed against as the probate process progresses.

It’s important to clarify the fee structure during your initial consultation to understand how you will be charged and avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does a Probate Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a probate lawyer depends on several factors, including the complexity of the estate, the type of legal issues involved, and the lawyer’s fee structure. General cost estimates include:

  • Simple estates: For estates with straightforward assets and no disputes, probate legal fees can range from $2,500 to $10,000, depending on the lawyer's fees and the state's probate laws.
  • Complex estates: For larger or more complicated estates with multiple properties, business interests, or disputes, probate costs can exceed $10,000 and may reach $20,000 or more.
  • Hourly rates: If charged by the hour, expect rates between $150 and $500, depending on the lawyer’s expertise and geographic location.
  • Percentage fees: In some cases, a probate lawyer may charge 2% to 5% of the estate’s value, particularly for larger estates or those involving complex legal matters.

Always ask for a clear estimate of fees during your initial consultation to understand the total cost of probate representation.

Top Questions to Ask a Probate Lawyer

Before hiring a probate lawyer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure you’re hiring someone qualified to handle your estate needs. Key questions include:

  1. What experience do you have with probate cases like mine?
Ensure the lawyer has experience with estates of similar complexity, especially if disputes or high-value assets are involved.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Ask whether the lawyer charges an hourly rate, a flat fee, or a percentage of the estate, and request a cost estimate.
  3. What is the likely timeline for my probate case?
While it’s hard to predict exactly, an experienced lawyer can give you a general idea of how long the probate process may take based on the specifics of your estate.
  4. What steps will you take to manage and distribute the estate?
Ask about the lawyer’s approach to handling debts, taxes, and asset distribution.
  5. Will you be handling my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may handle some aspects of your case, so it’s important to know who will be working on your probate case.
  6. What are potential challenges we may face?
A good lawyer will be able to anticipate possible issues, such as will contests or creditor claims, and explain how they would handle them.

How to Check the Credibility of a Probate Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a reputable probate lawyer, follow these steps to check their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their state bar status: Check with your state’s bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary action.
  • Look for probate experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in probate law and have experience handling estates of similar complexity.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for online reviews on platforms like Avvo or Martindale-Hubbell to see what past clients have said about the lawyer’s probate experience.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who can vouch for their professionalism and expertise in handling probate matters.
  • Look for membership in professional organizations: Membership in organizations like the American Academy of Estate Planning Attorneys (AAEPA) or the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) can indicate a lawyer's commitment to estate and probate law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with a probate lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • A copy of the will or trust (if applicable): Bring any estate planning documents left by the deceased, including wills, trusts, or powers of attorney.
  • List of assets and debts: Prepare a detailed list of the deceased’s assets (e.g., real estate, bank accounts, investments) and outstanding debts (e.g., loans, mortgages, credit cards).
  • Death certificate: Bring a certified copy of the deceased person’s death certificate.
  • Contact information for heirs and beneficiaries: Have a list of all individuals or entities named in the will or who are entitled to inherit under intestacy laws.
  • Questions about the probate process: Write down any questions you have about the process, costs, and potential issues you might face.
  • Relevant financial records: If available, bring any relevant financial documents, such as bank statements, property deeds, and tax returns.

By coming prepared, you can ensure a productive consultation and allow the lawyer to provide the best advice for your situation.
