I hired Shawn and he did an amazing job helping me through this difficult process. He was always readily available to answer my calls, questions and even provided encouragement through my dark days. There were many of times, I wanted to throw in the towel and took my frustration out on him. Shawn remained calm and professional and made me see the bigger picture of my situation. In the end my case was settled through mediation. I walked away with far less than I would have liked of monetary value, but he helped me to realize the additional benefits I gained because of my boldness of seeing my case through to the end. Fast forward I am now running a successful business and grateful to know I still have Shawn as a lawyer on speed dial if needed! If you are looking for someone that is knowledgeable, down to earth and overall doesn't treat you like a number. I highly recommend you hire him!

Refused to allow another more competent attorney assist—-he said, “I want all the money.” 6. He was not prepared none for trial. 7. He did not prepare me for trial. 8. The LawFirm has too many failures, it’s sad. 9 Stay away from him and his associates, partners.

We tried Mr. Foster to do something very simple on in an estate law issue last year. I called him myself, I am being sworn in as an attorney in another state next month, so I know extensively about estate law. I spoke with him at length to fill him out for a trust that my elderly mother is being supported by until she passes. Mr. Foster on the phone told me many many positive things that he could do for us, so I gave my elderly mother the go ahead to go see him. He abused her and lack of experience and age against her in a way I’ve never seen another attorney do in my entire life. He lied to her so much that we should have reported his dishonest behavior to the Arkansas bar. My dad just passed away and I was in Colorado taking the bar myself. He talked her into signing a billing agreement, which I specifically told him not to do if he could not do the small thing for us. Of course he lied, talked her into signing a billing agreement, and did nothing for us. I am not exaggerating he did not do a single thing we asked him to do. In my opinion he is the most dishonest, underhanded, unethical attorney I have ever come in contact with in my entire life. In my opinion he is a liar, and should never speak to another client, and be disbarred immediately. We asked him to do something that was less than $100 worth of work, and he took over $4000 from my elderly mother. Mr. Foster when you read this I hope you still feel horrible because we both know what you did. You have bad karma which is coming for you my friend. In my opinion you have no integrity and you should be in prison. I’m going to get licensed in Arkansas very soon and I’m going to sue you and your entire firm for what you did to my elderly mother. Just know my friend I’m coming for you, I recorded our conversation on the phone, and I can prove that your billing statements were falsified so that you would be paid an extraordinary amount for five minute calls that you lied about on your billing statements and said they were hours long. I will not stop until you are pumping gas which is the only thing you are able to do in my opinion. That is if karma doesn’t catch up with you before. If anyone reads this, in my opinion go anywhere but this firm. They seem to be the most dishonest firm, and only want to steal from you.

Paige Topping (AKA Morgan Paige Topping) Title: Broken Promises, Financial Strain, and Abandonment by Paige Topping and Lion Legal Services I trusted Paige Topping and Lion Legal Services with my custody case because I wanted to be an active and loving father to my children. From the very start, they gave me promises of progress and hope but ultimately left me abandoned at the most critical time. My experience has been one of broken promises, financial strain, and outright dismissal of my concerns In May 2024, I hired Lion Legal Services to represent me in my custody case. I paid $2,250 upfront, with an agreement to pay $750 later, and was assured they would secure temporary visitation rights so I could have my children during the summer. This was a deeply personal issue for me, as my children are my world, and I wanted nothing more than to see them. Despite their assurances, no progress was made. I was promised that they would meet with opposing counsel to arrange visitation, but that meeting never happened. For months, my case stagnated. Then, just days before my November 19 court hearing, I received an email from Lion Legal Services stating that my attorney, Paige Topping, had withdrawn from my case. This abrupt withdrawal left me scrambling to find representation. Even worse, they made no real effort to contact me before filing their motion to withdraw. They had multiple ways to reach me, including alternative phone numbers, emails, and my mailing address, but chose not to use them. Instead, they filed their withdrawal and left me completely unrepresented during one of the most critical moments of my custody battle. What’s even more heartbreaking is how dismissive they’ve been since then. When I reached out for help or clarification, I was told, “Sorry, case closed,” and when I tried to call, I was even laughed at. Out of desperation and not wanting to lose my children in a case that I initiated, I have made several attempts in the last two weeks to pay their ransom money of $2,000 more than originally agreed upon, just to keep my court date and not lose my kids. My pleas have been ignored, dismissed, or met with mockery. This treatment is appalling and unprofessional, especially for a law firm that claims to care about its clients. The financial strain has been equally devastating. When I offered to pay the remaining $750 as agreed, I was suddenly told I needed to pay $2,750 instead. These escalating demands felt like bullying tactics rather than fair negotiations. I was forced to take an early settlement in an unrelated legal case just to try and meet their financial demands. Yet even after all this, they abandoned my case, keeping the $2,250 I had already paid without delivering on their promises. After my experience, I began researching Lion Legal Services and discovered numerous complaints about their behavior. Many clients report similar issues: poor communication, broken promises, abrupt withdrawals, and financial exploitation. Even a former employee stated publicly on Indeed that the firm is “throwing clients to the wolves.” This fits with their apparent business model, which seems focused on signing as many clients as possible into a monthly payment system. Instead of prioritizing their clients’ best interests, they appear to take on more cases than they can handle, compromising the quality of their representation. It’s also concerning that Lion Legal Services has a history of changing their firm’s name after receiving significant negative feedback under the previous name. While some positive reviews exist, I can’t help but question their authenticity given the volume of negative experiences shared by clients and employees alike. It almost feels as if these positive reviews were written by friends, family, or staff to counteract the negative complaints. I am writing this review not out of anger, but out of heartbreak

Paid for 2 trademark registrations in Oct. 2013. Due to his failure to respond to office actions, the USPTO abandoned them in early 2016. 3 years wasted and back to square one. He refused to refund our $3k, but offered to pay the refiling fees, so I agreed if he committed to completing them in the normal 12-14 months. Almost a year later, one still not filed, one in limbo, and zero response to numerous e-mails. Have fired him and hired another attorney to complete. Given other reviews I've seen now, I'm not the only one he's screwed over. Find someone else to handle your legal affairs!

I would recommend doing your research before retaining. I've spoken to 2 different individuals who used this individual for a custody battle and both have been very displeased. He just doesn't appear to care and put in the effort. I definitely recommend interviewing other attorneys before you commit to this one.

Have been paying rent for 9 mos on apt in Hillcrest owned by Foster. Two words describe this "man": Dirtbag and Slumlord. The place is a "dump". Broken Windows, water seeping up from foundation, black mold, ceiling about to fall in. Mr Foster cares only about collecting rent. He owns 26 dwellings and each is worse than the last one. I don't know how the "man" can sleep at night .. Probably on a mattress stuffed with $$$. Whatever you do don't rent from this man. Repairs won't be made and he refuse to cooperate.

What a Probate Lawyer Can Do for You

A probate lawyer assists with the legal process of administering a deceased person’s estate. This often involves guiding executors (if a will exists) or beneficiaries (if no will exists) through the probate process to settle the estate according to the deceased’s wishes or applicable laws. Probate lawyers can help validate the will, distribute assets, resolve disputes among heirs, handle outstanding debts or taxes, and ensure the estate is legally and efficiently administered.

Whether you’re an executor of an estate or an heir facing probate proceedings, a probate lawyer can help you navigate the often-complex legal process to ensure the estate is settled correctly.

When Should I Hire a Probate Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a probate lawyer when you are responsible for managing the estate of a deceased individual, especially in the following situations:

  • The estate has substantial assets: If the estate includes significant assets like real estate, investments, or business interests, legal assistance is often necessary to handle the distribution properly.
  • The will is being contested: If there are disputes among heirs regarding the validity of the will or the division of assets, a probate lawyer can help resolve the conflict.
  • The estate includes complex or unclear provisions: If the will contains complicated instructions or there are no clear beneficiaries, a lawyer can ensure that the estate is administered according to legal requirements.
  • There is no will (intestate estate): When a person dies without a will, the estate is subject to intestacy laws, which determine how assets are distributed. A probate lawyer can help navigate this process.
  • Debt or tax issues exist: If the estate owes significant debts or is subject to estate taxes, a probate lawyer can help ensure debts are paid appropriately and taxes are minimized.
  • Probate disputes: If family members or other parties are disputing the distribution of assets or challenging the executor's actions, legal representation is crucial to defending your rights and ensuring the estate is handled properly.

Hiring a probate lawyer early in the process can help avoid costly mistakes and ensure the estate is settled efficiently.

What Does a Probate Lawyer Do?

A probate lawyer provides a wide range of legal services to help manage and settle an estate. Their tasks can include:

  • Validating the will: Filing the will with the probate court and ensuring its legal validity.
  • Guiding executors or administrators: Advising the person responsible for managing the estate on their duties, including inventorying assets, notifying creditors, and paying debts.
  • Filing necessary paperwork: Preparing and submitting the legal documents required to initiate and complete the probate process.
  • Resolving disputes: Mediating or litigating disputes among heirs or between beneficiaries and executors, including challenges to the will or disagreements over asset distribution.
  • Handling debt and tax matters: Ensuring that outstanding debts, taxes, and estate taxes are properly calculated and paid from the estate’s assets.
  • Distributing assets: Ensuring that assets are distributed to the beneficiaries according to the will or intestacy laws, and that all legal requirements are fulfilled.
  • Closing the estate: Completing the final steps of the probate process, including filing a final accounting with the court and formally closing the estate.

How Are Probate Lawyers Paid?

Probate lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the estate and the nature of the legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Most probate lawyers charge by the hour, with rates depending on the lawyer’s experience and the complexity of the estate. Hourly rates can range from $150 to $500 or more.
  • Flat fee: For simple estates or straightforward probate tasks, some lawyers may charge a flat fee that covers all of the necessary legal work.
  • Percentage of the estate: In some states, probate lawyers are allowed to charge a percentage of the estate's value as their fee. This percentage typically ranges from 2% to 5%, depending on the size of the estate and state regulations.
  • Retainer fee: Some lawyers may require an upfront retainer fee, which is billed against as the probate process progresses.

It’s important to clarify the fee structure during your initial consultation to understand how you will be charged and avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does a Probate Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a probate lawyer depends on several factors, including the complexity of the estate, the type of legal issues involved, and the lawyer’s fee structure. General cost estimates include:

  • Simple estates: For estates with straightforward assets and no disputes, probate legal fees can range from $2,500 to $10,000, depending on the lawyer's fees and the state's probate laws.
  • Complex estates: For larger or more complicated estates with multiple properties, business interests, or disputes, probate costs can exceed $10,000 and may reach $20,000 or more.
  • Hourly rates: If charged by the hour, expect rates between $150 and $500, depending on the lawyer’s expertise and geographic location.
  • Percentage fees: In some cases, a probate lawyer may charge 2% to 5% of the estate’s value, particularly for larger estates or those involving complex legal matters.

Always ask for a clear estimate of fees during your initial consultation to understand the total cost of probate representation.

Top Questions to Ask a Probate Lawyer

Before hiring a probate lawyer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure you’re hiring someone qualified to handle your estate needs. Key questions include:

  1. What experience do you have with probate cases like mine?
Ensure the lawyer has experience with estates of similar complexity, especially if disputes or high-value assets are involved.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Ask whether the lawyer charges an hourly rate, a flat fee, or a percentage of the estate, and request a cost estimate.
  3. What is the likely timeline for my probate case?
While it’s hard to predict exactly, an experienced lawyer can give you a general idea of how long the probate process may take based on the specifics of your estate.
  4. What steps will you take to manage and distribute the estate?
Ask about the lawyer’s approach to handling debts, taxes, and asset distribution.
  5. Will you be handling my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may handle some aspects of your case, so it’s important to know who will be working on your probate case.
  6. What are potential challenges we may face?
A good lawyer will be able to anticipate possible issues, such as will contests or creditor claims, and explain how they would handle them.

How to Check the Credibility of a Probate Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a reputable probate lawyer, follow these steps to check their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their state bar status: Check with your state’s bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary action.
  • Look for probate experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in probate law and have experience handling estates of similar complexity.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for online reviews on platforms like Avvo or Martindale-Hubbell to see what past clients have said about the lawyer’s probate experience.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who can vouch for their professionalism and expertise in handling probate matters.
  • Look for membership in professional organizations: Membership in organizations like the American Academy of Estate Planning Attorneys (AAEPA) or the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) can indicate a lawyer's commitment to estate and probate law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with a probate lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • A copy of the will or trust (if applicable): Bring any estate planning documents left by the deceased, including wills, trusts, or powers of attorney.
  • List of assets and debts: Prepare a detailed list of the deceased’s assets (e.g., real estate, bank accounts, investments) and outstanding debts (e.g., loans, mortgages, credit cards).
  • Death certificate: Bring a certified copy of the deceased person’s death certificate.
  • Contact information for heirs and beneficiaries: Have a list of all individuals or entities named in the will or who are entitled to inherit under intestacy laws.
  • Questions about the probate process: Write down any questions you have about the process, costs, and potential issues you might face.
  • Relevant financial records: If available, bring any relevant financial documents, such as bank statements, property deeds, and tax returns.

By coming prepared, you can ensure a productive consultation and allow the lawyer to provide the best advice for your situation.
