It’s never a good thing when you need an attorney. However, I had the good fortune of meeting Judson Pierce. Jud is an amazing client advocate! He’s prompt, concise and was always reassuring. Not to mention top notch with communication! Jud made a difficult situation more palatable and settled my case quickly. I highly recommend! FIVE STARS!

Atty Nolan was in bed with the DA's office under Michael O'Keefe's rule. He set my daughter up and worked with the DA to lock my daughter up. After 5 1/2 years of waiting for trial, he left my daughter no choice but to take a deal, which he lied to her about the specifics. He said she'd be home in 3.8 years yet no one in MCI Framingham can tell us when she's getting out. Like most women who end up in the legal system, my daughter was a victim of domestic violence, at the hands of her accuser, before she became a defendant, and Attorney Nolan treated her like a common criminal instead. In the end, our family didn't have the courage or wherewithal to hire a new attorney as we had already paid attorney Nolan and his crew an exorbitant amount of fees. We also never saw any of the results of the work from the experts he hired and we paid for. We are convinced Atty Nolan was hiding exculpatory evidence uncovered by the experts, as he continually refused to present to the court exculpatory evidence presented to us by the state. At every turn, if we found contradictory information against the state's evidence, Atty Nolan would blatantly ignore the facts presented and do what HE wanted INSTEAD OF WHAT HIS CLIENT WANTED. He also ignored most emails and phone calls to his office from my daughter's camp over the 5 1/2 year period that we dealt with him. Two weeks after my daughter's incarceration, attorney Nolan posted on his Facebook page that he was endorsing for District Attorney, the prosecutor who initially pressed charges against my daughter (I accused this prosecutor of malicious prosecution and provided the evidence to attorney Nolan to support it, which he completely ignored, as he defended the prosecutor saying that the prosecutor, Dan Higgins, was a "good guy" and that the prosecutor's father was a former FBI agent and reasoned that Higgins wasn't capable of malicious prosecution because of that.) Also, the ADAs on the case are guilty of providing false information in their documents and briefs presented to the court, atty Nolan either willingly ignored the discrepancies or he simply isn't a savvy enough attorney to have caught them. I personally believe he ignored the blatant lies purposely, I base that on my total personal experience with him during my daughter's court case. My daughter is black, gay and dresses masculine, she's also a bigger girl, which is worse than being black or gay in many Cape Codders' eyes. I feel that she ended up in prison due to these factors and these factors alone. I believe that Attorney Nolan along with law enforcement on Cape Cod, took one look at my daughter and determined her guilt based on her looks, race, sexuality and size.

Even though he was he couldn't be retained, he continued to give excellent advice and guidance throughout the process. If I could have, I would certainly have retained him.

Highly suggest this law firm if you are looking for a reliable firm that will not take advantage of you. I personally worked with Robert Withrow when he was at his previous firm Rico, Murphy, Diamond & Bean LLP. I couldn't have been more pleased with my experience working with Rob. I had a custody case to work through and Rob was elite at dealing with a highly emotional case while keeping me in check. Rob also would run detailed cost analysis for me when determining how we should approach certain aspects of the case - Rob would always suggest I don't spend my money unless I will see a good return on investment, which is rare in the industry as many lawyers are looking to maximize their cash. Rob personally cares about his clients and will do the right thing. If you are in the area highly consider this law firm and working with Rob - he will take great care of you.

I have been working with Attorney Andrew Keutmann for a few months now on a complicated divorce case. After changing 2 attorneys I thought I would have never met a person more trusting and committed to his clients than Andrew. Not only Andrew is a top notch attorney, but he is a genuinely great human being who truly cares about what is best for myself and most importantly my children. Andrew is a thorough lawyer that does not overlook any detail and with a great presence in the court room. I would not ever look further for someone to represent me!!!

A most excellent family law attorney, and believe me, I know the difference. Having worked with lawyers for most of my employment history, Andrew stands out as one of the best. He showed a real interest, not only in my case, but in how it was affecting me and my children. My kids took a real liking to him and he always treated all of us with respect. His wealth of legal knowledge and skill meant there was never an unnecessary or overinflated charge, all filings and necessary actions taken care of in a timely manner. He always returned my calls promptly, and I never felt rushed, or as if what I had to say wasn't important. He has a strong courtroom presence, and I truly felt he had our best interests at heart throughout. Going through a divorce, you don't give trust easily, so for me to feel I could trust him speaks volumes not just to his skills, but his character. I would highly recommend him for anyone, male or female, who is looking for someone knowledgeable and caring to tend to their most personal family issues.

Throughout the entirety of the 3 plus year process he helped guide us through rough waters to eventually find smooth sailing. Communication was thorough and to the point throughout. I will make this short and to the point Mr Mesmar is a con man he has never practiced law for any law firm, so were does he get his experience from. Yes he says he went to law school graduated passed the bar (I wonder how much of that is true, going to research it).It seems to me that law is a job that requires experience by having worked in the chosen field. It’s not like hey you get hired some company and has a6 week job training and then you are judged if you are accepted and can do the job. Law professionals take people lives in their hands much like doctors. You really on their expertise and not their ability to lie and con you into believing that they are knowledgeable and experienced in their profession. If you question him and dig into his marlaki you will see his reactions show his transparency that he really has no clue. He has a great ability to make you believe that he is likeable trustworthy and honest with your best interest in his responses to you. Ask him about how to proceed in the case or how much money he is payed He will not give you a straight answer for his fees, and gets ticked off regarding law strategy. His answer I will handle the strategy not you I have the law degree I went to law school not you. I have spoken to other lawyers and non were so demeaning towards me as he was. They were all respectful listened and responded in a manner that was in line with a client lawyer relationship. He must have missed that class. Well never have I been made to feel like I was a victim and only my money mattered not my life.

You may want to consider other options before coming here! I’ve closed a lot or real estate transactions and never had an attorney charge me for requesting my funds to be disbursed via wire transfer, additionally your bank will charge a fee so you’re paying double fees to get your money. An attorney’s job is to disburse funds… you’re already getting fees on the HUD why charge again?

This lawyer is expensive, evasive and does things backwards. Instead of driving the conversation based on his clients’ priorities, he pushes his own agenda-literally, which he will give to you at the meeting. That sets the tone for the meeting-he’s not there to listen and serve the needs of his client. He avoided providing direct answers to direct questions. He was condescending. He was narcissistic. He is more concerned with taking a fee for service than providing value for service. Having worked with a lawyer prior to him on other matters, I had a good benchmark for how a lawyer should be when acting as an ally. This guy acted more like a robot, spitting out information he’s spit out before, and provided the equivalent experience of someone saying “look it up on the Internet.” Waste of time and money. I do not recommend.

After my first application for disability was denied by Social Security, I called Attorney Roberts, and he started working on my case. The treatment of my condition by a medical specialist had been interrupted, because I didn’t have health insurance. Attorney Roberts explained how I could get health insurance coverage, so I could go back and get treatment from that doctor again. Attorney Roberts then asked the doctor for detailed testimony to explain my condition. My specialist has many patients, and declined to provide detailed testimony to supplement the medical treatment notes and other information that was already in my medical records. Attorney Roberts gathered all of the medical records and went with me to the Social Security Disability hearing. But the Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) said she did not believe that the pain caused by my condition prevented me from working, because I had collected unemployment compensation after losing my last job. She said she believed that I could still work, because I had received unemployment insurance. Attorney Roberts appealed the case to federal court, but the federal Judge decided there was nothing he could do in my case, because the issue was “credibility” (the ALJ believed that I could still work). As soon as we received that Federal Court decision, Attorney Roberts helped me file a new application. Attorney Roberts re-contacted the specialist who treats my condition, and explained that without his testimony, Social Security would never understand how severe my condition is, and my claim would be denied again. By then, I had regular appointments with the specialist, since I had health insurance. The specialist decided this time to provide the written testimony, and Social Security immediately allowed my claim. I recovered retroactive benefits going back 1 year before the day we filed the second application. Attorney Roberts stayed with my case until I got the result that I needed.

It is a traumatic experience to have to go through and everyone involved eased my worries and walked me through the process with diligence, respect, and clear expectations and explanations. The lawyer assigned to my case was John M. Vlassakis. He was extremely attentive to every question and was able to explain the details of each step in a clear and complete manor, while not using law jargon I wouldn't understand. Being from out of state added another layer of stress; however, throughout my ordeal Jessica kept up regular communication and pushed through any logistical issues including opening up her schedule to accommodate changes. Jessica saw my case through to dismissal and I was ecstatic; regardless of this outcome I recommend her completely. This past spring I met with Jessica Foley to represent me on my first time criminal matter and in speaking with her was convinced that she was more than capable of handling my case. Boy was I ever wrong on hiring her. On my first court appearance she shows up 20 minutes late (mind you I am freaking out that she is not here well ahead of time and in knowing where the courthouse is). In going before the Judge, she looks to get the trial pushed out and asks me my availability for the next date. I told her anytime, she pushes it out a month further than what was initially offer by the court. When we leave the court, she speaks to me for about 10 minutes and just says “Oh well, this is the way the court system works” and leaves. I then get a call later in the day from her office looking for payment of the balance due on the flat fee agreement amount. Really concerned about her clients well-being and just looking to line her bank account. I could have stood before the court and accomplished the same result as she did without having to pay for it. A week later I send her an email asking her to explain herself and what happen and get no response back. As my next trial date approached, I ended up speaking to two other attorney’s and learned far more than anything Jessica initially told me. At that point I decided to terminate my representation as I knew I would be better served going with someone else. We are now in dispute over her legal fees and getting nowhere to resolving it. If you read this, be advised and do not make the same mistake I made as it will cost you spend your hard earned money and get nothing in return. Jessica is an unresponsive, unsympathetic and typical self-absorbed attorney.

I was never told the seller was also using their services. - A rushed closing with only a couple hours notice, forcing my wife and I to leave work early, only to find out their office just want to go on vacation a day early. - Rude secretary staff. - Hidden fees at closing and I had to request in writing for them to do the warranty paper work on a new house because they didn't feel like it, and declined the offer the first time through. Save yourself the headache and look elsewhere.

I called this office, and spoke to Mr. Louis J Oggiani. I had a simple question about a Will. To my dismay, he was short, and came across as very irritated with me. Instead of sounding slightly welcoming, he was anything "But". His behavior I felt was uncalled for, and very unbecoming of the person he portrays himself to be.

So frustrated. Took the time to tell Steven about my issues. He seemed genuinely interested in helping. Gave him personal, related case documentation and photos because he seemed motivated to help...only to have him ignore further attempts to move things forward. It's touch enough sharing all of the trouble I've been going through with my condo and the former Trustee who was also the seller, developer, and management (who was responsible for 1 1/2 years of raw sewage episodes in my condo, and threatened me when I asked for help)...but then to be led on and eventually ignored? Upsetting.

I engaged Steven Hemingway's services to take my father's estate through probate and the process went very smoothly...but that's why you hire an attorney, isn't it? What sets Steven apart from the rest is that he took the time to explain everything until I was comfortable understanding what I needed to. He was quick to respond to phone calls, walked me through the process, met all our deadlines and exceeded our expectations. He has a prompt and professional support team as well. Just a great experience working with Steven and this firm!

How glowing of a review do you give someone who saved your life? Bad, short duration (3 years), too quick marriage for all the wrong reasons. I had the house (free and clear), wife had the credit rating to get a HELOC so we could pursue a business venture. I quit claim'd the deed to a joint tenancy one (bad mistake) and she got a HELOC ON MY HOUSE!. Wife soon soured on the business venture and emptied what was left in the HELOC account. Relationship went to hell and I reached out to Ms. Ryan. Best call I ever made. Talk about nasty divorces. Wife wanted 1/2 the house and relief from the HELOC. Ms. Ryan successfully parried ever motion wife's attorney filed and I got my house back (wife got no part of it). I did take responsibility for the HELOC - fair since the bulk went into the house. Ms. Ryan has the knowledge, experience and judiciary relationships in SE Mass like no other divorce attorney on the South Shore. Contested divorce? Call Ms. Ryan, she may save your life too.

Suasan Castleton Ryan should retire. She thinks she is better than she is. She will speak to you like she understands the law. But in court, she hardly spoke up for me. As a result, I lost a lot of money on the sale of the marital home. Susan has limited knowledge on finaces and will lose yur money and smile and take your money for months. Case should have been a few months, instead it lasted over a year.

What a Probate Lawyer Can Do for You

A probate lawyer assists with the legal process of administering a deceased person’s estate. This often involves guiding executors (if a will exists) or beneficiaries (if no will exists) through the probate process to settle the estate according to the deceased’s wishes or applicable laws. Probate lawyers can help validate the will, distribute assets, resolve disputes among heirs, handle outstanding debts or taxes, and ensure the estate is legally and efficiently administered.

Whether you’re an executor of an estate or an heir facing probate proceedings, a probate lawyer can help you navigate the often-complex legal process to ensure the estate is settled correctly.

When Should I Hire a Probate Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a probate lawyer when you are responsible for managing the estate of a deceased individual, especially in the following situations:

  • The estate has substantial assets: If the estate includes significant assets like real estate, investments, or business interests, legal assistance is often necessary to handle the distribution properly.
  • The will is being contested: If there are disputes among heirs regarding the validity of the will or the division of assets, a probate lawyer can help resolve the conflict.
  • The estate includes complex or unclear provisions: If the will contains complicated instructions or there are no clear beneficiaries, a lawyer can ensure that the estate is administered according to legal requirements.
  • There is no will (intestate estate): When a person dies without a will, the estate is subject to intestacy laws, which determine how assets are distributed. A probate lawyer can help navigate this process.
  • Debt or tax issues exist: If the estate owes significant debts or is subject to estate taxes, a probate lawyer can help ensure debts are paid appropriately and taxes are minimized.
  • Probate disputes: If family members or other parties are disputing the distribution of assets or challenging the executor's actions, legal representation is crucial to defending your rights and ensuring the estate is handled properly.

Hiring a probate lawyer early in the process can help avoid costly mistakes and ensure the estate is settled efficiently.

What Does a Probate Lawyer Do?

A probate lawyer provides a wide range of legal services to help manage and settle an estate. Their tasks can include:

  • Validating the will: Filing the will with the probate court and ensuring its legal validity.
  • Guiding executors or administrators: Advising the person responsible for managing the estate on their duties, including inventorying assets, notifying creditors, and paying debts.
  • Filing necessary paperwork: Preparing and submitting the legal documents required to initiate and complete the probate process.
  • Resolving disputes: Mediating or litigating disputes among heirs or between beneficiaries and executors, including challenges to the will or disagreements over asset distribution.
  • Handling debt and tax matters: Ensuring that outstanding debts, taxes, and estate taxes are properly calculated and paid from the estate’s assets.
  • Distributing assets: Ensuring that assets are distributed to the beneficiaries according to the will or intestacy laws, and that all legal requirements are fulfilled.
  • Closing the estate: Completing the final steps of the probate process, including filing a final accounting with the court and formally closing the estate.

How Are Probate Lawyers Paid?

Probate lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the estate and the nature of the legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Most probate lawyers charge by the hour, with rates depending on the lawyer’s experience and the complexity of the estate. Hourly rates can range from $150 to $500 or more.
  • Flat fee: For simple estates or straightforward probate tasks, some lawyers may charge a flat fee that covers all of the necessary legal work.
  • Percentage of the estate: In some states, probate lawyers are allowed to charge a percentage of the estate's value as their fee. This percentage typically ranges from 2% to 5%, depending on the size of the estate and state regulations.
  • Retainer fee: Some lawyers may require an upfront retainer fee, which is billed against as the probate process progresses.

It’s important to clarify the fee structure during your initial consultation to understand how you will be charged and avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does a Probate Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a probate lawyer depends on several factors, including the complexity of the estate, the type of legal issues involved, and the lawyer’s fee structure. General cost estimates include:

  • Simple estates: For estates with straightforward assets and no disputes, probate legal fees can range from $2,500 to $10,000, depending on the lawyer's fees and the state's probate laws.
  • Complex estates: For larger or more complicated estates with multiple properties, business interests, or disputes, probate costs can exceed $10,000 and may reach $20,000 or more.
  • Hourly rates: If charged by the hour, expect rates between $150 and $500, depending on the lawyer’s expertise and geographic location.
  • Percentage fees: In some cases, a probate lawyer may charge 2% to 5% of the estate’s value, particularly for larger estates or those involving complex legal matters.

Always ask for a clear estimate of fees during your initial consultation to understand the total cost of probate representation.

Top Questions to Ask a Probate Lawyer

Before hiring a probate lawyer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure you’re hiring someone qualified to handle your estate needs. Key questions include:

  1. What experience do you have with probate cases like mine?
Ensure the lawyer has experience with estates of similar complexity, especially if disputes or high-value assets are involved.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Ask whether the lawyer charges an hourly rate, a flat fee, or a percentage of the estate, and request a cost estimate.
  3. What is the likely timeline for my probate case?
While it’s hard to predict exactly, an experienced lawyer can give you a general idea of how long the probate process may take based on the specifics of your estate.
  4. What steps will you take to manage and distribute the estate?
Ask about the lawyer’s approach to handling debts, taxes, and asset distribution.
  5. Will you be handling my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may handle some aspects of your case, so it’s important to know who will be working on your probate case.
  6. What are potential challenges we may face?
A good lawyer will be able to anticipate possible issues, such as will contests or creditor claims, and explain how they would handle them.

How to Check the Credibility of a Probate Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a reputable probate lawyer, follow these steps to check their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their state bar status: Check with your state’s bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary action.
  • Look for probate experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in probate law and have experience handling estates of similar complexity.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for online reviews on platforms like Avvo or Martindale-Hubbell to see what past clients have said about the lawyer’s probate experience.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who can vouch for their professionalism and expertise in handling probate matters.
  • Look for membership in professional organizations: Membership in organizations like the American Academy of Estate Planning Attorneys (AAEPA) or the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) can indicate a lawyer's commitment to estate and probate law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with a probate lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • A copy of the will or trust (if applicable): Bring any estate planning documents left by the deceased, including wills, trusts, or powers of attorney.
  • List of assets and debts: Prepare a detailed list of the deceased’s assets (e.g., real estate, bank accounts, investments) and outstanding debts (e.g., loans, mortgages, credit cards).
  • Death certificate: Bring a certified copy of the deceased person’s death certificate.
  • Contact information for heirs and beneficiaries: Have a list of all individuals or entities named in the will or who are entitled to inherit under intestacy laws.
  • Questions about the probate process: Write down any questions you have about the process, costs, and potential issues you might face.
  • Relevant financial records: If available, bring any relevant financial documents, such as bank statements, property deeds, and tax returns.

By coming prepared, you can ensure a productive consultation and allow the lawyer to provide the best advice for your situation.
