Still waiting for an explanation of the line items invoiced….2 years later. Christian Webert and team issued an invoice against my property 12 hours before my scheduled closing forcing me to pay or delay the sale of my property. I’d probably rather try to buy a catalytic converter in an alley than deal with the ethics of these people.

Moeller Graf is top tier attorneys with the entire firm. I would highly suggest any association to subscribe to their services. David Parker & Christian Webert are always available when I need legal advice or explanation of condo declarations. Alexis Frick is amazing at collections process for delinquent accounts and very responsive. Brittany and Ashley go above and beyond with customer service. I would say the names above are a huge asset to this firm and I plan to never loose this ongoing business connection!

Terrible legal services. Literally charged me to PRINT paperwork, like that’s hard and time consuming. You can tell she doesn’t have children, and yet she’s practicing Family Law, with no clue what it takes to raise a child. If I could give a zero star rating, I would.

Do not use Catherine Tieman for legal needs. She represented me in a complex case. She does not understand the laws or the application of them, and does not take the time to understand her client's needs. I recently met with other past clients of hers, who have had the same experience. While she is quite pleasant, she will charge you for every second of her time, even though some of her communications are written in a manner that don't make sense (so require follow up calls or emails to clarify). Billing for poor communication is a very effective money making strategy on her part, but will leave you frustrated, especially when adding her lack of ability.

Ms. Goodbody's services as a Child Legal Representative can be bought. She is corrupt, unprofessional and doesn't give a rat's a.. about the children involved. She will conduct ex parte communications during a legal proceeding (which is illegal) and she will lie during court proceedings, if it suits the party that's paying her. Keep yourself and your children as far away from her as you possibly can.

If I could give a 0 rating I would this man should have retired 10 years ago all he does is talk to you like you're a friend and he gives you advice but never actually helps you with your court case. He sat in on a mediation with me and talked to my sister the entire time about her living in New York and then turned around and tried to charge me thousands of dollars for it. I ended up having to complete my entire case alone with the courts. He should be disbarred if you ask me and he should give his services away for free.

For Real Estate work, Stephen is very good. I gave him only a fair rating because he is not okay in front of a judge. No matter how much he knows, he's unable to stand his ground and defend his position. I would say that he should be working for a competent trial lawyer and you'd like him very much but do not let him go to trial on your behalf because even if the facts are 100% in your favor as ours were, he was unable to convince a judge or jury of this.

Foley & Lardner, who falsely pride themselves on diversity and inclusion, recently targeted one of their ONLY female, Arab-Muslim associates in the firm nationwide . F&L unlawfully terminated Georgetown Law graduate, Jinan Chehade, before her official first day of employment, this taking place after heavily interrogating her for her support of the humanitarian crisis in Palestine, framing her advocacy for Palestine as supporting terrorism. It is clear that this firm deliberately supports Islamophobia and discriminates against its Muslim associates and clients, while not taking any disciplinary action against its associates who openly express their hatred for Muslims.

Rob Waterman is a very poor lawyer and should be eliminated from the bar. He can't keep track of trust accounts, does not bill correctly, is grossly unprepared for hearings and continually gives excuses. I was seeking an attorney that was experienced in the dissolution of a business. Mr. Wilson presented himself as a non-confrontational. Turns out, he was non-conformational with everyone but me. Mr. Wilson provided poor almost non-exist legal advice. This ended up costing more than ½ of my business. He made agreements with the defenses attorney and did not consult with me. I lost buildings, equipment and money without as much as a courtesy call. He told me that I was legally entitled to ½ of the business and that we would without issue receive at least that. During negotiations with the defendant Mr. Wilson sent emails to the defense that I had written to him without as much changing a word. He would only communicate through email, I repeatedly requested a face to face strategy session, but he was never available. When I showed up for a case management meeting, he did not even recognize me. My lawsuit was unnecessarily drug out by Mr. Wilson’s lack of legal knowledge and advice, poor communication and lack of focus on my case. When I hired Mr. Wilson, I was told I would get ½ of a business that I rightfully owned, and as it turned out a good portion of that was lost to poor negotiations and give a ways without my knowledge and consent.

You seek an attorney for legal consul, experience and professional advice. In our experience Mr. Wilson provided poor representation and costly incorrect legal advice. In my opinion, he did not put enough time into our case which cost our company a great deal of money. He told us our tennent was in our facility illegally and said our key witness would give us an 80% chance of success. The problem was he did not speak with our key witness until 10 minutes prior to court as was not prepared. It was very evident that if he had spoken with the key witness earlier, he should have know our tenant was in fact in our facility legally and the opposing counsel brought this our very successfully. In addition Mr. Wilson underestimated his time and cost on 3 separate instances by as much a 100%. So every time he told us 3-4 hours of attorney fees, it was 6-8. He also did not inform us that if we lost the case we would be liable for our tenants attorney fees which we again very costly. All in all this was not a good experience and I feel Mr. Wilson did not provide experience, legal knowledge and dedicated time needed as evident by poor results and very costly fees. I quote Mr. Wilson when he told us, "You want them out, I'll get them out". The judge said no. And I paid a high price for poor legal representation.

I am very disappointed with Joel. We made the step to set up an Estate Plan(Trust, Medical POA, etc) with Joel back in 2006. He offerred an ongoing Plan that had a large initial payment for Trust Preparation, etc and then an annual payment for future updates. He prepared the trust to our satisfaction and we had one update in 2012 when we were told that Joel and his Law Partner(Peter Scott) were parting ways. We were given the choice of which partner we wanted to continue to use. We elected to stay with Joel since we felt comfortable with him. We felt that this would be very important after someone passes and he was young enough that our kids could relate to him and be comforable around him if my spouse and I passed together. Since the Law Partnership breakup Joel has not returned phone calls or emails. I have sent emails through AVVO as well. The annual payment notice has not been sent to me even with me leaving messages that I still wanted the plan and was willing to pay. I would hate to see how Joel would responded when my children would need him most. My father was a lawyer and one that worked for the good of his clients but I guess that is "old school."

I hired this man to take over my divorce case after my previous lawyer became very I'll. This man took every advantage he could of my situation knowing that my case was difficult and I didn't have the opportunity to hire any one else at the time. He was totally focused on the money, always asking for more retainer while at the same time not preparing at all for my hearings. I did most of the work for him. Mark Reider is totally unprofessional. He will not stay quiet long enough for you to have your own say in the matter. Going into final orders hearing he was not prepared at all. During my case, Cynthia had multiple personal issues arise. They became my problems and certainly affected the case due to the poor attorney client relationship. And it wasn't just me who was affected. I was in her office while she avoided calls from other clients who were in major ch. 11 bankruptcies, or she would answer and hang up on them because they were late filing something. Her abuse was also heaped onto my mother. She made fun of my mother in court for crying (over the possibility of losing some real estate) and in her office. She was spiteful that I took a vacation during proceeding (my wife paid for it and wasn't involved in the matter). Made an issue of it even 5 years later. Ultimately, I called her out on her attitude and that caused her to claim an ethics issue to be able to withdraw from my case (after she found out that she messed up the payment plan; couldn't do simple math). Interesting to note that she claims an ethics issue to the judge because I asked her to drop the attitude. I think that would be a violation of ethics to lie to the judge? On the upside, Cynthia is not a dumb person. She could be very good at her job with a personality adjustment. The problem is that bankruptcy is a trying time for any person, and you will have to be the cool one in dealing with her. I normally don't write reviews for anything. But I felt that her behavior was so terrible and that maybe someone else could steer clear of her if they were to read this.

What a Real Estate Lawyer Can Do for You

A real estate lawyer provides legal assistance in transactions and disputes involving property, including residential and commercial real estate. Whether you're buying, selling, leasing, or developing property, a real estate attorney can help ensure that your transactions are legally sound and your rights are protected. They review contracts, perform due diligence, resolve disputes, and provide legal representation in negotiations and litigation involving property matters.

Real estate lawyers are crucial in safeguarding your investment by ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal real estate laws, as well as protecting you from potential legal pitfalls related to property ownership and transactions.

When Should I Hire a Real Estate Lawyer?

Hiring a real estate lawyer is beneficial in various scenarios, including:

  • Buying or selling property: When navigating complex real estate contracts, it’s advisable to have a lawyer review and ensure that the terms are favorable and legal.
  • Commercial property transactions: For leasing, purchasing, or selling commercial properties, a lawyer can help manage the intricate legal aspects of such transactions.
  • Zoning or land use issues: If you're planning to develop property or change its use, a real estate lawyer can guide you through zoning laws and land use regulations.
  • Resolving property disputes: For boundary disputes, title issues, or disagreements over property rights, a lawyer can help mediate or litigate the matter.
  • Foreclosures or evictions: If you're dealing with foreclosure or managing a tenant eviction, legal representation ensures that the process adheres to local laws and protects your interests.
  • Title and deed issues: Lawyers can help clear title disputes, ensure the legitimacy of property deeds, and handle transfers of ownership.

What Does a Real Estate Lawyer Do?

A real estate lawyer provides a range of services to help with property transactions and disputes, including:

  • Contract drafting and review: Ensuring that purchase agreements, leases, and other contracts are legally binding, fair, and protect your interests.
  • Title search and clearance: Conducting a thorough title search to ensure that the property has no legal claims or liens that could affect ownership.
  • Facilitate closing: Managing the closing process in real estate transactions, including reviewing final documents and ensuring that everything is in order before the transfer of ownership.
  • Resolve disputes: Handling legal disputes related to property ownership, boundaries, zoning, or tenants.
  • Assist in financing: Reviewing loan agreements and mortgage documents to ensure the terms are fair and legally sound.
  • Zoning and land use advice: Guiding clients through the complexities of zoning laws and building regulations for property development or renovation projects.

How Are Real Estate Lawyers Paid?

Real estate lawyers typically charge for their services in the following ways:

  • Flat fee: Many real estate transactions, such as reviewing a sales contract or assisting with a closing, are charged on a flat-fee basis.
  • Hourly rates: If a lawyer is handling complex disputes or litigation, they may charge by the hour. Hourly rates can vary significantly based on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Contingency fees: In rare cases, such as property disputes or claims for damages, a lawyer may work on a contingency fee basis, meaning they only get paid if you win or settle the case.
  • Retainer: For ongoing legal support, some clients may pay a retainer, which is an upfront fee used as a deposit for future legal services.

It's important to clarify the fee structure with your attorney before hiring them to avoid any surprises.

How Much Does a Real Estate Lawyer Cost?

The cost of a real estate lawyer varies based on the complexity of the matter, the location of the property, and the lawyer’s experience. Key factors that affect pricing include:

  • Type of transaction or issue: Simple tasks, like contract reviews, typically cost less than handling a complex property dispute or litigation.
  • Experience and location: More experienced lawyers or those in high-demand areas, like urban centers, often charge higher rates.
  • Billing structure: Lawyers may charge a flat fee for basic services like document review or hourly for more time-intensive work such as disputes or litigation.

Flat fees for straightforward services like closing assistance may range from $500 to $1,500.

Hourly rates can range from $150 to $400 or more, depending on the attorney’s experience and location.

Always discuss fees upfront to understand the overall cost of the legal service you're receiving.

Top Questions to Ask a Real Estate Lawyer

Before hiring a real estate lawyer, ask the following questions to ensure they are the right fit for your legal needs:

  1. What experience do you have with real estate law?
Ensure the lawyer has experience in the type of real estate transaction or dispute you’re facing, whether residential, commercial, or development-related.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for services - whether it's a flat fee, hourly rate, or retainer - so there are no surprises later on.
  3. How long will the process take?
Especially important for real estate transactions or disputes with deadlines, ask for a general estimate of how long the process will last.
  4. Have you handled cases similar to mine?
Experience with similar transactions or disputes can give you confidence that the lawyer knows how to handle your case.
  5. Will you handle my case personally, or will it be passed to another attorney?
Confirm who will be handling the bulk of your case work, especially in larger firms where junior lawyers may take on some responsibilities.
  6. Can you provide references?
Speaking with past clients can give you insight into the lawyer's experience and how they handle cases.

How to Check the Credibility of a Real Estate Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a reputable real estate lawyer, take these steps:

  • Check with the state bar association: Verify that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with no disciplinary actions on their record.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on legal directories and platforms like Avvo or Martindale-Hubbell to see what past clients have said.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should have past clients willing to share their experiences.
  • Review their track record and expertise: Look at the lawyer’s website or LinkedIn profile for information about their experience in real estate law and any relevant cases they’ve handled.
  • Membership in professional organizations: Lawyers who are members of respected legal or real estate organizations, like the American Bar Association’s Real Property Division, often signal credibility and expertise.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make your first meeting with a real estate lawyer productive, you should prepare the following materials:

  • Relevant property documents: Bring purchase agreements, lease contracts, mortgage documents, zoning permits, or any other paperwork related to your case.
  • A summary of the issue or transaction: Be ready to explain the situation, whether it's a property dispute, contract negotiation, or development issue.
  • Questions about the legal process: Prepare a list of questions about how the lawyer will handle your case and what steps are involved.
  • Financial documents or loan agreements: If the case involves financing or a mortgage, bring any related documents for the lawyer to review.
  • Your goals and timeline: Be clear about what outcome you're hoping for, and if there are any deadlines that need to be considered, such as closing dates or legal filings.

By coming prepared, you can ensure that your consultation is efficient and informative, allowing you to assess whether the lawyer is the right fit for your real estate needs.
