Michael Klar is representing me after my soon to be ex son in law took out a Order of Protection against me. The allegations are completely made up and Michael has helped me through the process. Jim , is a good lawyer very knowledgeable however we found it troublesome that we had to send requested paperwork on numerous occasions and having to call and check to ask why haven't you called to go over the paperwork in the case.We were told he didn't remember receiving it and please send again which happen on more then 1 occasion. As well it seemed he had no desire to fight for anything else but what was offered but excepted the easy way out ,Although he was very sympathetic and seemed caring we felt he had loss his fight that we were told he had over the many years he was know for at.his law practice. The case worked out ,however it wasn't an easy road having to constantly call and check in to discuss what he said was important details needed to be worked on for our case. Then to be told its not needed Each call seemed to be like the first starting from scratch each time . Very nice man , again extremely knowledgeable , caring. Perhaps some cases over so many years arent worth fighting for anymore .

I retained Jim Druker in February of 2018 to help resolve a tax problem I had stemming to events from 2010. I had been referred to him through another contact on LinkedIn. When I first got in touch with him I was frantic; and honestly remained frantic for the next 3 years but he never wavered in trying to keep me calm. Jim patiently and empathetically responded to my inquiries (though he was likely cursing me when he hung up the phone or responded to my longwinded emails). Jim was not warm and fuzzy but always optimistic that the issues would somehow get resolved. He truly never wavered on his resolve to help me get the issues I had settled in the best possible way. He didn't hold me hostage to invoices or finances but rather stayed true to his word when he was first engaged. Lesser men would have ignored my calls and my frantic emails, Jim did not. I will never in a lifetime be able to fully repay Jim for everything he did for me and for my family. I can only hope that this review provides some level of adequate thanks for his years of filing and re-filing. In the end, he kept his promise. And again, a lesser man might have given up (or gotten fed up with me). I would recommend Jim in a heartbeat. I trusted him with my life. And while I hope never, ever to speak to him about my personal finances again, if I were nearby, I would not hesitate to ask him for dinner. You simply cannot ask for a better person or attorney for legal representation of any kind, no less taxes or fraud.

Hiring Stanley Hirsch to handle my divorce, and then a support issue, was the best decision I made. He and Stephanie and Liz make a great team. They were all involved in my case, always available to talk, and sincerely listened to my concerns. Stanley had the well-being of my children and myself always at the forefront and worked the best deal for us, including me in the process so I understood and approved of everything that was happening. His integrity, honesty, and concern were evident from the consultation to the settlements. I highly recommend Stanley Hirsch.

He has a lot of integrity, humanity and honesty, and based on my experience, he is very knowledgeable about all aspects of family court law. He was recommended to me by a friend and I can also recommend him very highly and without hesitation.

It is my privilege to recommend Jennifer Coden as an excellent and trustworthy divorce attorney. I believe her work would not only meet your expectations but exceed them. Jennifer Coden and her team were caring, honest , reliable, professional and got the job done. She not only represented me in court with skill and professionalism but was there for me emotionally. She can guide you through the process. I was very impressed with Jennifer's ability to state my case. I was represented better than I could have imagined. My needs were put first and I was treated with compassion. My opinions were valued and my doubts were reassured while being informed of the law. She calmed my nerves and the process was always explained. Her team, Lorie,Nicole, and Matt, always had her back when she was in court and were available for me. They kept me informed and I thank them for that. I couldn't have asked for a better attorney. I will recommend her as she was recommended to me. Thanks so much Jennifer for all you continue to do! You will not be disappointed if you hire her.

Most, to the best of my knowledge plan on getting divorced. I did not after many years of marriage. When that ugly day arrives one searches for the best attorney they can have. I interviewed several and knew I made the right choice when I chose Jennifer Coden. She held my hand all to often and understood what my needs were. There were many hurdles as my EX went through four attorneys, each one more incompetent than the next. Jen and her associate, Nicole Silver and their staff kept them all in check. Their professionalism, expertise in the law and often the need to educate the opposing attorneys, led to closure of my marriage and allowed me to move on. I thank them always.

I hired Jennifer a year ago after interviewing numerous attorneys to go through a very emotional divorce. As soon as I met her I knew that she was the attorney for me. She is warm, caring, friendly, patient, thoughtful and extremely knowledgeable. She made me feel better immediately. Many times I have had emotional days and I knew I could call her up and she would talk me through whatever it is that was bothering me. When we had to appear in Court I had full confidence in her as she was always prepared and got us in and out with no time wasted. I felt that she was very reasonable as she did not waste any time when dealing with the other side. I have recommended Jennifer to many people and they all felt the same and have thanked me for recommending her through the difficult time in their life.

Hiring Breiter is a mistake I will have to live with forever. She ruined my life and my children's lives. She is incompetent. She does not do her due diligence. She tries to be a social butterfly. I had to go to court for my divorce!!! She shows her hand to the other attorney. Instead of serving my husband with the divorce papers she sends him a letter advising him that I have retained her...WHAT? I had a bad feeling from the get-go but lack of funds and emotional state forced me to stay with Breiter. DON'T DO IT, FIND ANOTHER LAWYER!!! Don't give her and her staff ruin your life too.

I hired Jeanne Breiter to represent me as my collaborative divorce attorney last summer. Divorce is obviously never easy, and mine became an extremely stressful event at times as my wife and I had trouble reaching an equitable settlement. Jeanne and the entire law firm were understanding and compassionate and offered great advice along with sound legal council. They assisted me greatly and helped guide me thru a very difficult time. Thankfully, I was able to obtain my divorce without having to go to court. Without a doubt, this was a very confusing time and probably the most difficult period of my life. Going through a divorce is stressful but Jeanne and the entire staff really showed their care and concern for me during this time. I would absolutely recommend Jeanne Breiter if you are looking for a divorce attorney.

I don't usually write comments on these sites but I am sitting here reading negative comments about Jeanne Breiter, who is my divorce attorney. I absolutely disagree! Jeanne was enormously successful in recently representing me. My husband and I had very difficult financial issues, and we were both out of work. Jeanne focused on my needs and helped me achieve a fair and amicable resolution as a collaborative divorce, keeping me from having to go to Court. As people will agree, going through a divorce is stressful but Jeanne and her friendly, helpful support staff made the process smooth. I strongly recommend Jeanne Breiter if you are going through a divorce.

My divorce was not complicated. He said I'd likely even be getting money back from my retainer. We weren't fighting about anything. Instead, this got dragged out more than two years because Harlan couldn't be bothered to move on anything quickly. I got billed for phone calls and emails going over things we had ALREADY discussed that he forgot. This divorce cost me over $10k for his disinterest. I'm appalled- and broke. Obviously this is just an opinion. But I’d avoid this horrible woman at all costs. This woman is not only truly nasty but she doesn’t bother to know her clients at all. I’m not sure she even cares about clients in any way. I can’t for the life of me figure out why anyone would want to continue using her. She’s rude. She’s mean. She’s unfriendly and I don’t think she’s even competent. I think there is truly something wrong with her:

With my perfectionism, I was switching 3 lawyers, and interviewing about 15 of them prior to hiring Eleanor. Ilene was my lawyer. I now need to go back to court several years later due to all the errors she made. Allowed my ex husband to have a cap and follow all standards of the nys child support laws. She told me she made sure was my son was well taken care of and she made stipulations to the divorce agreement as she had me sign every page. $50k later I find my ex has truly been gifted by my lawyer to just follow Nys child support act. What was I paying all this money for to negotiate when she basically followed all Nys standards for college, no sports, and allowing him to maximally pay $2100 per month towards child support when his salary is now over $300k. That’s not even 10 percent when I was the one left paying all of the bills. Now need to return to court to fix all of the courtesies she left for my ex to take. I assure you, she never would have signed the agreement she handed me with a smile.

Ilene represented me in my divorce 4+ years ago. Her name was given to me as a referral by a professional-whom I respected. They knew someone who used Ilene and recommended her. She was kind, honest and alway kept me informed. Not something you ususally hear about a lawyer. My ex was HORRIBLE and went after everything-trying to leave me penniless and childless. Ilene fought for me and got everything that mattered to me. She always told me the truth. To this day, I continue to call her with questions. She is ALWAYS available for me. Just as kind and honest as when she represented me. I continue to give her name out as a referral. Not one person who has used her because of me has regretted it. Everyone has nothing but good to say about her. She is very respected in her field. I would recommend Ilene to anyone. She may not be the cheapest- but for a decision that will last the rest of your child's future, SO WORTH THE MONEY.

Sylvia Goldschmidt is the worst! She bullied me into settling for worthless LLC’s. The divorce cost over $200,000 and she did no follow up after I settled. I had to hire another attorney who told me what a bad deal I made and that she did not do any forensic accounting. However she did have me hire a forensic accountant who did nothing for an additional $50,000. She would not make any appointments with the other attorney at her office, so she could charge by the hour for the drive to and from NYC. I can go on with so many stories as she dragged the divorce on for 3 years…

This lawyer fights for the woman only! It cost my friend @ $40,000 to get stuck paying his non-working ex-wife more than $2000/month. Now he's living paycheck to paycheck and the witch has no care in the world. Make sure you go in front of a judge who asks you if you're ok with your lawyer. This one avoids that 4 obvious reasons. My initial impression upon consultation was positive, so I hired Mrs Sokolich. Unfortunately, covid happened and things were moving slow. Too slow. It seemed as though Mrs Sokolich put me on a back burner. Further, for court dates, she failed to tell the judge some critical health information about me that would potentially save me thousands of dollars. The straw that broke the camels back is when she didn't put up an argument or resistance to outrageous demands from the opposition. Instead she told me nonchalantly that this is what they want and will probably get. There was no fight in her. I felt like she was not on my side. I immediately consulted 5 separate attorneys (3 recommendations from friends and 2 from Avvo) and they all told me that I was correct about the demands being outrageous and even assured me that the demands would not stand up if my case went to trial. Further, they agreed that if Mrs Sokilich had first told the judge about my health issues that the pendulum would have surely swung in my favor. I ultimately hired an ace of an attorney off of Avvo and dismissed Mrs Sokolich. I am not bashing Mrs Sokolich. She is a very nice person and I am sure she has and will serve many people well, but she is not the right attorney for me.

This is not a lawyer you want to employ if you don't have a fortune to spend on fees - she charged me almost $30,000 during the worst year and a half of my life - I ended up with $78 a month in alimony and am actually having to pay "credits" to a scumbag who makes almost twice what I do...they lost my "discovery" documents, made innumerable mistakes in financial calculations and correspondence (they are a "cut and paste" operation - one statement had some other person's name in my records) - just overall awful results - I am now bound to an agreement that in no way favors me...she is washed up and all talk, no results. Don't make the mistake I did!

Joan was always late to court. Did not show up twice, made me sit there for 2 hours and never called. I was on the phone with her office, who told me she was in the court house. I even texted her phone with no response. She billed me for things she did not do, or try to do. She also hired another attorney. I was her first divorce case, and was losing due to her giving in. I did fire the firm and went somewhere else whiched help me out. It seemed the only time the firm called was for payment. The bill got to almost $10,000 with no sight of getting divorced. Example of one case is I asked Joan for my Exs financial, she said it was not filed as of 11/10. My new attorney asked for it for my Exs financials from her lawyer and received it 10/10.

I hired this Linda for my divorce case, I had to fire her and went to a different lawyer. Looking back, I noticed how unprofessional she was. She took advantage of my situation: I was in shock and desparate. She not only did not help me, but also gave ill advices to me and cause me dearly on my divorce case. She did not really do anything. The paper she filed for me had typos and I had to go back to her to have the errors corrected. (of course, I still had to pay the time she "correct" her own msitakes that I spotted). After I fired her, my new lawyer immediately made "sound" decision and took and "quick" actions and made the situation much better. The advise she gave me was proven totally "wrong". Still, she charged me the time she was not doing anything. She represents the worst of lawyers. Do not go to her. I will file a complaint at Bar Association. This type of lawyer is the shame of the law community! Do not use her!

If you are looking for a lawyer who is impersonal, extremely difficult to reach, condescending and keeps you in the dark in your most vulnerable state of divorce, passive, defensive and certainly not proactive, greedy, and ultimately inflexibly overpriced - this is your man. Although very cordial at first, you will find that when he told you he would be present in all court appearances for you, that meant an associate of his would actually be representing you in court and he would theoretically only be present during a trial if that ever happens. Otherwise, don't expect even a nod from him when you happen to see him in court with his other clients. Everything I heard about him and his reputation was unfortunately far from reality during the time his firm was representing me, stay away.

This woman was an absolute horror show during my divorce. I don't think she means harm but she has no sensitivity to the stress of going through a divorce, she actively yelled at me at least twice for giving answers she didn't like. Even though she knew I was a victim of, among other things, verbal abuse from my spouse. She made me cry at least three times for things no client should be made to cry over . I was traumatized by my experience with her, she is completely insensitive to what it is like being someone going through a divorce. It got to the point where it was more stressful being with her than the husband I was trying to divorce so in an act of desperation I settled with him just so I would not have to see her anymore.

What a Tax Lawyer Can Do for You

A tax lawyer specializes in the complex area of tax law, offering legal advice and representation on matters related to tax compliance, disputes with tax authorities, and tax planning. Tax lawyers help individuals, businesses, and organizations navigate the intricacies of federal, state, and local tax laws. They ensure that clients are compliant with tax regulations, minimize tax liabilities, and represent them in audits, appeals, or disputes with tax authorities such as the IRS.

Whether you need assistance with personal taxes, corporate tax strategy, or resolving an audit, a tax lawyer can protect your rights and help you manage your financial responsibilities.

When Should I Hire a Tax Lawyer?

Hiring a tax lawyer is advisable in several situations where tax issues are complicated, disputes arise, or legal strategies are necessary to manage tax liability. Common reasons to hire a tax lawyer include:

  • Tax audits or disputes with the IRS: If you are facing an audit or have received a notice of deficiency from the IRS, a tax lawyer can represent you and defend your rights during the process.
  • Tax debt relief: If you owe back taxes or face significant tax liabilities, a tax lawyer can help negotiate a payment plan, settlement, or Offer in Compromise with the IRS.
  • Tax planning for businesses or individuals: A tax lawyer can advise on strategies to minimize tax liabilities through legal deductions, credits, and other tax-saving mechanisms.
  • International tax issues: If you have foreign assets or income, a tax lawyer can help you comply with international tax laws, such as the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) or Foreign Bank Account Reporting (FBAR) requirements.
  • Tax fraud or evasion accusations: If you're being investigated or charged with tax fraud or evasion, a tax lawyer can provide a defense and negotiate with the authorities to minimize penalties.
  • Corporate tax law compliance: Businesses, especially large corporations, benefit from the expertise of a tax lawyer who can handle complex issues such as mergers and acquisitions, employee benefits, and international tax planning.
  • Estate and gift tax planning: A tax lawyer can help you minimize estate taxes and ensure your assets are passed on efficiently through trusts, wills, and other tax-efficient structures.

Hiring a tax lawyer early can prevent costly mistakes and ensure you are fully compliant with all applicable tax laws.

What Does a Tax Lawyer Do?

A tax lawyer provides a wide range of services to assist clients with tax compliance, tax planning, and legal disputes. Their key responsibilities include:

  • Tax planning and advisory: Helping individuals and businesses plan their tax strategies to reduce liability, avoid penalties, and maximize deductions and credits.
  • Representing clients in tax disputes: Defending clients in disputes with the IRS or state tax authorities, including audits, appeals, and collections actions.
  • Filing Offers in Compromise: Negotiating settlements with the IRS for clients who owe more than they can afford to pay.
  • Handling tax litigation: Representing clients in tax court or other legal proceedings if a tax dispute escalates beyond the administrative level.
  • Estate and gift tax planning: Advising clients on how to structure their estate to minimize estate and gift taxes, including creating trusts, family partnerships, or charitable giving plans.
  • Assisting with tax fraud investigations: Defending clients accused of tax fraud, evasion, or criminal tax offenses.
  • International tax compliance: Advising clients with offshore assets on U.S. tax compliance and reporting requirements, including FATCA and FBAR.

How Are Tax Lawyers Paid?

Tax lawyers typically charge for their services in various ways, depending on the complexity of the work involved and the nature of the legal assistance required. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many tax lawyers charge by the hour, especially for complex cases or ongoing legal work such as audit defense, tax litigation, or corporate tax planning. Hourly rates can range from $200 to $600 or more, depending on the lawyer's experience and location.
  • Flat fee: For specific tasks, such as preparing a legal document, filing an Offer in Compromise, or handling a routine audit, some lawyers charge a flat fee.
  • Retainer: For businesses or individuals with ongoing tax needs, a lawyer may require a retainer, which is an upfront payment used to secure the lawyer’s services and billed against as work is completed.
  • Contingency fee: In rare cases, particularly when negotiating settlements or resolving tax debts, a lawyer may charge a contingency fee based on the outcome of the case. This means they only get paid if they succeed in reducing your tax liability.

Always ask about the fee structure during the initial consultation to avoid surprises and ensure you understand how the lawyer will charge for their services.

How Much Does a Tax Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a tax lawyer depends on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the specific services required. Here are some general cost estimates:

  • Simple tax issues: For straightforward cases such as filing an Offer in Compromise or handling a routine audit, fees may range from $2,000 to $7,500.
  • Complex tax disputes: For more complicated cases, such as defending against tax fraud accusations, handling a significant IRS audit, or resolving international tax issues, costs can range from $10,000 to $50,000 or more, depending on the time and effort involved.
  • Hourly rates: Tax lawyers typically charge between $200 and $600 per hour, with higher rates for more experienced attorneys or cases involving high-stakes outcomes.
  • Flat fees: For specific services, such as tax planning for an estate or preparing a legal document, a flat fee may range from $1,000 to $10,000, depending on the complexity of the task.

Always get a detailed estimate of fees during your consultation so you can plan your budget accordingly.

Top Questions to Ask a Tax Lawyer

Before hiring a tax lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your situation. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with tax law?
Ensure the lawyer has specific experience handling cases or issues similar to yours, whether it’s IRS disputes, corporate tax planning, or estate taxes.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify the lawyer’s fee structure - whether it’s hourly, flat fee, or retainer - and ask for an estimate of the total cost of your case.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
Ask the lawyer to provide an honest assessment of your situation and the possible outcomes, such as tax reductions, settlements, or litigation results.
  4. Have you handled cases like mine before?
Find out if the lawyer has experience with issues similar to yours, such as international tax compliance, criminal tax defense, or complex estate planning.
  5. What is the timeline for my case?
Ask how long it will take to resolve your tax issue or dispute, as some tax matters can take months or years to fully settle.
  6. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work. Clarify who will be handling your case day-to-day.

How to Check the Credibility of a Tax Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable tax lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Check their bar status: Verify with your state bar association that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for specific tax law expertise: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in tax law and have handled cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s expertise and service.
  • Ask for references: A credible tax lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can vouch for their ability to handle complex tax matters.
  • Look for professional affiliations: Membership in organizations like the American Bar Association’s Section of Taxation or the National Association of Tax Professionals (NATP) can indicate that the lawyer stays current with tax law developments.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with a tax lawyer, it’s essential to come prepared with all relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Tax returns and records: Bring copies of recent tax returns, especially those related to the issue you're facing.
  • IRS correspondence: If you’ve received notices from the IRS or state tax authorities, bring all relevant documentation.
  • Financial records: Bring records of income, expenses, assets, and any other relevant financial documents that the lawyer may need to understand your tax situation.
  • List of questions: Prepare a list of questions to ask the lawyer about your case, the legal process, and the potential outcomes.
  • Timeline of events: Provide a clear timeline of any interactions with the IRS or tax authorities, including audits, notices, or payment demands.

By being well-prepared, you can ensure a productive consultation and help the lawyer assess your situation effectively, providing you with the best legal advice moving forward.
