Bill Jones and the Jones Law Firm represented me in my divorce case for two years. When I met Bill for my consultation, I was on the brink of losing my case and everything I had, I thought my destruction was inevitable. The moment Bill took the reins as my Legal Counsel everything changed. We won the case due to Bill and his firm’s tenacity, knowledge, and legal prowess in the face of impossible odds. Bill will always give you a straightforward assessment that you can trust. I never once doubted his loyalty or motives as my attorney; he has earned my trust and belief that he would fight till the end exhausting every opportunity to win his client’s case. Bill, Chris, and Heather will fight for you with everything they have because your success is their success. They worked tirelessly and diligently, delivering results better than the goals we set, the cost was more than fair and well-earned. When I hired the Jones Law Firm, I was looking for representation, instead, I found permanent legal representation & lifelong friends who are loyal and fight for you. If you need representation, you can find no better Attorney than Bill Jones and the Jones Law Firm, they are the best advocates you can have, and they will earn your trust every day for all your legal needs. It is rare today to find an attorney of his caliber, commitment, and integrity.

Bill Jones provided cool-headed guidance in a seemingly life-shattering situation. He took me from getting no time with my kids to winning majority custody. Plus, he enabled me to save money by teaching me how to do a lot of the tedious homework, like discovery responses, for myself. He wasn’t looking to bleed me dry. He treated me with genuine compassion; while also keeping me grounded, and making sure my goals in my custody battle were realistic. A great friend of mine, who recommended Bill to me, had a similar experience. I had worked with a couple of attorneys before him; and can thoroughly see the difference between an attorney like Bill, who legitimately cares, and a typical attorney who’s just looking to close a deal as soon as possible. If your life has been shattered by divorce, and/or a custody battle, there is no one better to have in your corner.

Joseph Weyant took on my case and talked a good talk at the beginning, but he did very little to resolve it. He would evade my questions about what he was doing like a career politician, or just completely ignore my emails and calls for months to the detriment of my case. I eventually realized it was because he wasn’t doing anything on it. In the rare event that he responded to my many attempts to reach him, he still managed to evade my questions about what he did, and where we were at, and instead talked about what he was going to do and then didn’t do. I would get off the phone feeling like I just spoke to a sleezy, career politician. I would have been better off acting as my own lawyer.

I live out of state and needed a local attorney for a real estate matter concerning my deceased brother's home. Other attorneys I contacted in the area either told me it would be a several month process costing me exorbitant fees or failed to return my inquiry calls. I had researched all the attorneys I contacted. Then I called Mr. Weyant. He was knowledgeable and professional. After a consultation, Mr. Weyant advised me of the process to transfer ownership. Later the same day, I received a detailed e-mail from him after he'd visited the office of the Registrar of Deeds. I was provided with a detailed outline for resolving the specifics of my situation to effectively transfer the property. The fee for his service was reasonable. I met with Mr. Weyant the following week when I came to town to conclude the matter. I was impressed with Mr. Weyant because of his courteous, direct, and efficient manner. I felt he was doing his best for me in resolving my problem. He was also very accessible by phone when I called with questions. I highly recommend Mr. Weyant for those with needs in his areas of expertise. I was most pleased I found him.

I was referred to Joe by a friend who had an excellent experience using him for her divorce. I was hesitant because of the other review on this site. I knew my friend would not steer me wrong, so I decided to hire Joe. I am very glad I did. He was upfront with me about what Tennessee law allows. He fought hard for everything I wanted even though some requests were out of the ordinary. Some things we succeeded on and some things we didn't but he gave it his all. He always returned my calls if I had to leave a message and was always very professional. I would recommend Joe to anyone who asks me if I know a good lawyer!!

Had an appointment with Christi Hale today at 2:30 pm. I made it 3 weeks after meeting with her in her office. When I arrived at her office today I was met by another attorney and was informed that Christi was busy and he would be taking care of me. I did not know him and he had no clue why I was there and I had to explain my situation all over again. He charged me $50 and did nothing. They should have called me to let me know that she could not see me today and given me the option of making another appointment. Very poor office practices. Will never recommend them to anyone and will never go back.

Hang onto your wallet when visiting this thief. Asks for a $5k deposit, then thoroughly eats through that deposit with charges for things you didn't ask for. Charges attorney rates for legal assistant work. Over charges on time to do simple tasks. Next thing you know, deposit is used up. Will not return any portion of unused deposit if there is one. Wish I would have checked reviews before I forked over the deposit. You've been warned.

I hired this firm for an upcoming tax audit , Paid him $5000 as a deposit at the onset before he would start anything , I questioned him on why such a high deposit and he took offense with my Statement .. I paid anyway since we needed representation , Keep in mind ,prior to leading up to the meeting in person , Klein returned the few phone calls himself and rather quickly. After he received the deposit , There were the sounds of Crickets , I’m not sure how you keep your Staff to cover for you , You either have high turnover or they are similar to you or maybe family? In any case , He literally performed 30 minutes of conversation with the DOR and that was it He actually hung me out to dry .. Luckily , I prevailed ... not with Klein’s assistance ..

Rodney and his office completed our estate planning. We found his fees to be very reasonable but most importantly his expertise and experience guided us through the process. It was very time efficient as well. Saw the other reviews complaining about computer generated documents. I would have no problem recommending him to friends and family. Fantastic job.

In the first meeting he said he would help me handle probating a will that was simple, but then he just disappeared and only did anything when he wanted to get paid or if I called to get an update on things. You can do better by finding a probate checklist and guidelines online, rather than pull your hair out with this guy. It cost the estate a lot of money for him to accomplish very little.

I went to Mr. Hall for estate planning and to set up a trust. After my appointment with him, it was literally months before I heard anything from his office and then only after prompting. I thought his rates were somewhat high for the quality of service I received, and have not pursued any further services. I finalized the trust with another attorney.

These statements are subjective, but how I feel. He is a nice guy, but did little to assist with my DUI. He sure did cash my checks easy, but could never look into my arrest video and make sure my field sobriety was on a level surface. I had to ask for lower penalties. He didn't offer any.

After accepting my case, we were clear on our approach and agreed how this lawyer would proceed. However as soon as we paid our money and walked out of his office nothing was done. After repeated calls to his office, Sceduled another meeting, asked are you sure you want to handle our case, was told definetly that yes he did and would get right on it, six weeks go by, nothing from this lawyer. Again made repeated calls and had to physically drop by office twice before secretary called his cell. As I thought again he had done nothing. This Lawyer has wasted three months of my time and money with minuscule effort on his part. I would recommend you look somewhere else if you need an Attorney. Time is of the essence, Time is money, Don't waste either with this Individual .

Paid this guy 1k of a 1500 retainer to file paperwork in order to be heard in a court room. Not only did he NOT tell me he doesn't work those kinds of cases he took it on like he knew what he was doing. He ended up having to call other lawyers, while in my presence, asked them how to go about filing the correct paper work, which paperwork was correct, and who he needed to talk to. After being told what to do by other attorneys he still managed to mess up the paper work, the order that the paper work was diled, All the while judging his client for the way he looks. He is a nice older man somewhat, but very incompetent and a waste of $1,000 that I can't get back and could have used for another attorney. I do not recommend this man for any legal problems what so ever. His actions cost me my case

I hired Mr. Wilkinson to represent me in a disputed probate case. He failed to take actions I directed him to take ,and instead spent an inordinate amount of time on insignificant issues, resulting in unnecessary hourly charges for him and the opposing attorney. He failed to present pertinent evidence about appeals court rulings on the ownership of a co-owned bank checking account, resulting in me losing over $14,000. His explanation for refusing to file one motion I directed him to file was that he had other cases before the same judge and was not going to file anything on my behalf that would make the judge angry. He then filed a motion to withdraw, leaving me without representation during a critical phase of the hearings.

What a Tax Lawyer Can Do for You

A tax lawyer specializes in the complex area of tax law, offering legal advice and representation on matters related to tax compliance, disputes with tax authorities, and tax planning. Tax lawyers help individuals, businesses, and organizations navigate the intricacies of federal, state, and local tax laws. They ensure that clients are compliant with tax regulations, minimize tax liabilities, and represent them in audits, appeals, or disputes with tax authorities such as the IRS.

Whether you need assistance with personal taxes, corporate tax strategy, or resolving an audit, a tax lawyer can protect your rights and help you manage your financial responsibilities.

When Should I Hire a Tax Lawyer?

Hiring a tax lawyer is advisable in several situations where tax issues are complicated, disputes arise, or legal strategies are necessary to manage tax liability. Common reasons to hire a tax lawyer include:

  • Tax audits or disputes with the IRS: If you are facing an audit or have received a notice of deficiency from the IRS, a tax lawyer can represent you and defend your rights during the process.
  • Tax debt relief: If you owe back taxes or face significant tax liabilities, a tax lawyer can help negotiate a payment plan, settlement, or Offer in Compromise with the IRS.
  • Tax planning for businesses or individuals: A tax lawyer can advise on strategies to minimize tax liabilities through legal deductions, credits, and other tax-saving mechanisms.
  • International tax issues: If you have foreign assets or income, a tax lawyer can help you comply with international tax laws, such as the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) or Foreign Bank Account Reporting (FBAR) requirements.
  • Tax fraud or evasion accusations: If you're being investigated or charged with tax fraud or evasion, a tax lawyer can provide a defense and negotiate with the authorities to minimize penalties.
  • Corporate tax law compliance: Businesses, especially large corporations, benefit from the expertise of a tax lawyer who can handle complex issues such as mergers and acquisitions, employee benefits, and international tax planning.
  • Estate and gift tax planning: A tax lawyer can help you minimize estate taxes and ensure your assets are passed on efficiently through trusts, wills, and other tax-efficient structures.

Hiring a tax lawyer early can prevent costly mistakes and ensure you are fully compliant with all applicable tax laws.

What Does a Tax Lawyer Do?

A tax lawyer provides a wide range of services to assist clients with tax compliance, tax planning, and legal disputes. Their key responsibilities include:

  • Tax planning and advisory: Helping individuals and businesses plan their tax strategies to reduce liability, avoid penalties, and maximize deductions and credits.
  • Representing clients in tax disputes: Defending clients in disputes with the IRS or state tax authorities, including audits, appeals, and collections actions.
  • Filing Offers in Compromise: Negotiating settlements with the IRS for clients who owe more than they can afford to pay.
  • Handling tax litigation: Representing clients in tax court or other legal proceedings if a tax dispute escalates beyond the administrative level.
  • Estate and gift tax planning: Advising clients on how to structure their estate to minimize estate and gift taxes, including creating trusts, family partnerships, or charitable giving plans.
  • Assisting with tax fraud investigations: Defending clients accused of tax fraud, evasion, or criminal tax offenses.
  • International tax compliance: Advising clients with offshore assets on U.S. tax compliance and reporting requirements, including FATCA and FBAR.

How Are Tax Lawyers Paid?

Tax lawyers typically charge for their services in various ways, depending on the complexity of the work involved and the nature of the legal assistance required. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many tax lawyers charge by the hour, especially for complex cases or ongoing legal work such as audit defense, tax litigation, or corporate tax planning. Hourly rates can range from $200 to $600 or more, depending on the lawyer's experience and location.
  • Flat fee: For specific tasks, such as preparing a legal document, filing an Offer in Compromise, or handling a routine audit, some lawyers charge a flat fee.
  • Retainer: For businesses or individuals with ongoing tax needs, a lawyer may require a retainer, which is an upfront payment used to secure the lawyer’s services and billed against as work is completed.
  • Contingency fee: In rare cases, particularly when negotiating settlements or resolving tax debts, a lawyer may charge a contingency fee based on the outcome of the case. This means they only get paid if they succeed in reducing your tax liability.

Always ask about the fee structure during the initial consultation to avoid surprises and ensure you understand how the lawyer will charge for their services.

How Much Does a Tax Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a tax lawyer depends on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the specific services required. Here are some general cost estimates:

  • Simple tax issues: For straightforward cases such as filing an Offer in Compromise or handling a routine audit, fees may range from $2,000 to $7,500.
  • Complex tax disputes: For more complicated cases, such as defending against tax fraud accusations, handling a significant IRS audit, or resolving international tax issues, costs can range from $10,000 to $50,000 or more, depending on the time and effort involved.
  • Hourly rates: Tax lawyers typically charge between $200 and $600 per hour, with higher rates for more experienced attorneys or cases involving high-stakes outcomes.
  • Flat fees: For specific services, such as tax planning for an estate or preparing a legal document, a flat fee may range from $1,000 to $10,000, depending on the complexity of the task.

Always get a detailed estimate of fees during your consultation so you can plan your budget accordingly.

Top Questions to Ask a Tax Lawyer

Before hiring a tax lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your situation. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with tax law?
Ensure the lawyer has specific experience handling cases or issues similar to yours, whether it’s IRS disputes, corporate tax planning, or estate taxes.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify the lawyer’s fee structure - whether it’s hourly, flat fee, or retainer - and ask for an estimate of the total cost of your case.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
Ask the lawyer to provide an honest assessment of your situation and the possible outcomes, such as tax reductions, settlements, or litigation results.
  4. Have you handled cases like mine before?
Find out if the lawyer has experience with issues similar to yours, such as international tax compliance, criminal tax defense, or complex estate planning.
  5. What is the timeline for my case?
Ask how long it will take to resolve your tax issue or dispute, as some tax matters can take months or years to fully settle.
  6. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work. Clarify who will be handling your case day-to-day.

How to Check the Credibility of a Tax Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable tax lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Check their bar status: Verify with your state bar association that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for specific tax law expertise: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in tax law and have handled cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s expertise and service.
  • Ask for references: A credible tax lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can vouch for their ability to handle complex tax matters.
  • Look for professional affiliations: Membership in organizations like the American Bar Association’s Section of Taxation or the National Association of Tax Professionals (NATP) can indicate that the lawyer stays current with tax law developments.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with a tax lawyer, it’s essential to come prepared with all relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Tax returns and records: Bring copies of recent tax returns, especially those related to the issue you're facing.
  • IRS correspondence: If you’ve received notices from the IRS or state tax authorities, bring all relevant documentation.
  • Financial records: Bring records of income, expenses, assets, and any other relevant financial documents that the lawyer may need to understand your tax situation.
  • List of questions: Prepare a list of questions to ask the lawyer about your case, the legal process, and the potential outcomes.
  • Timeline of events: Provide a clear timeline of any interactions with the IRS or tax authorities, including audits, notices, or payment demands.

By being well-prepared, you can ensure a productive consultation and help the lawyer assess your situation effectively, providing you with the best legal advice moving forward.
