Att. Cormier assisted in the settling and document filing for my husbands estate. I found him to be friendly but professional. He was able to answer most of my questions or was able to get an answer and advise me. I liked that he came to my home when reviewing or signing documents as it would have been a distant to travel. My prior lawyer was giving up his practice and refered Att. Cormier to me. The rates he charged seem to be in line with others and there was no pressure to pay ahead, etc. I enjoyed working with Att. Cormier and will call on him as needed. I have recommended him to another for estate planning.

Colleen Garry is no doubt a very talented, experienced, intelligent and hard working lawyer - one of the best. However, she is at capacity right now for legal cases. She is a solo practitioner without a paralegal and she does her law practice as a part timer, as her State Representative Duties is her full time job. It would not be fair to her current clients, or those who are looking for legal representation, for her to take on new cases. There are plenty of attorneys out there who will take any case you all may have, providing you have the funds to pay their fees. Good luck and God Speed as you all look elsewhere for legal help.

Colleen was hired to help my spouse and I navigate through a situation involving my daughters other parent terminating their rights and my spouse adopting them. She was very considerate of the delicate situation and walked us through everything. She even had a special ceremony with our daughters, including our son and it was really a nice touch. She even photographed the event! You don't see lawyers like Colleen anymore...very rare.. Thank you for everything Colleen, it meant a lot to me.

We engaged Paul to settle an Estate. He was very difficult to get in touch with, never provided updates on the status of the case, we had to go to Probate Court to get necessary papers. He was friendly and nice on the phone, but must be way overworked as it took almost two years to settle a simple estate with a valid will..... I would not recommend him.

David Taylor is the single worst, most incompetent professional I have ever had the unfortunate circumstance to ever work with. He failed to represent me adequately, didn't keep me informed of what was happening in my case (even key things like judgments and requests for more information), made decisions on my behalf without consulting and left me in a completely compromised position before I finally realized what was happening and fired him and got somebody else. We are currently considering filing a malpractice claim against him because he was so bad. Do NOT hire this guy - you will deeply, deeply regret it!

We needed to Probate my father's will. Little property, no dissension in the family. Of course or initial meeting went well. We met the attorney, she took our money. That is the last you hear from her. The motivator to do this was so that we could establish the value of the estate before it gained value and set the lien by the nursing home. We agreed. 5 years later,. I am still waiting.. "We mailed the documents", Weeks later I get some random invoice instead. "Ok, we will email them since the originals are lost", a week later and no email. Can I get a detailing of our payments and charges? "I'll email". Nothing. The basic premise of the contract, to establish a value of the nursing home lien? "That isn't possible". So, unless you wish to spend money, for years, with zero result, take your money elsewhere.

I thought Pamela Parker would be a good choice for a special needs trust. I should have had a clue when she emphasized her payment system. Unfortunately, after she was paid (although the final documents were not completed), she NEVER EVER responded to email or phone calls. I felt sorry for her answering service because they apologized every time I would call. And it took two months for her to finally mail my final paperwork...with NO explanation, no apologies. I would not recommend her at all.

I spoke with Pamela Parker over the phone, she was the most genuine lawyer I have ever spoke with, If she didn't know the answer to my question, she told me she would research it. She didn't pretend to know it all, though very knowledgable about legal planning for special needs adults. She took 30 minutes out of her time to discuss my case. Didn't hurry me on the phone and was very sympathetic, WOW, very few people would give you the time of day if they didn't have a personal gain. Pamela Parker has a great heart and I felt she connected with me. Thank you!!!

During a large event, the owner hired 15-year-olds on bikes to handle parking, with little regard for safety. Teens were riding dangerously close to cars and using an unregistered dirt bike. When I raised concerns, the owner dismissed them, saying, "Let them be kids; they'll learn by crashing into someone," showing no concern for safety or the business's image.

Katherine Garvey does not deserve the title of attorney. She should be disbarred in my estimation. She had my elderly father with advanced dementia sign legal documents which he did not understand nor had the ability to comprehend. She also drew up my mother's will containing a mistruth. To my dismay, the CT Counsel of Attorneys could care less to investigate her careless and dreadful work! Save your hard earned money and go elsewhere.

Absolutely the worst experience I've had with an lawyer and I have dealt with several. He was nosey, unprofessional and rude. We made a deal with my wife's parents to buy there home. We tried to buy it 2 years ago but had some credit issues to resolve. We had agreed on a price for the property but it was less than the market would fetch but they wanted to keep it in the family. We where using Paul because I had told my father in law that a lot of times when you use an attorney you have used before they give a discount for return business. Basically he told them we where ripping them off even though we told them to get the house appraised. He charged double for the closing costs. paid people twice we had already paid out of our pocket and then told us we had to get the money back ourselves. He told my wives parents that their closing costs where 7 thousand dollars less than they where so we got stuck paying an extra 7 grand at closing. We couldn't complain! We where already getting a deal on the house. So we had to eat it and smile. last of all we had an appointment for the closing for 2:30pm on a Friday. He had me sit on his brick porch for 45 minutes on a 90 degree day so he could squeeze in another closing before mine (last minute). If I could give him no stars I would.

The attorney decided to keep $10,000 of my money at closing because of the Columbia gas outage and explosions in the neighborhood which caused my property to be without gas at time of closing. After the closing was done he tried to bully me into keeping my $10,000 and giving it to the buyer against our agreement. He would not talk to me on the phone he would hang up on me and he would not reply to my emails and told me to hire an attorney of my own. Extremely unprofessional and arrogant. I don’t know how this guy is still licensed

Was selling my house and as the closing attorney, Russell claimed that he delegated the title search to another attorney who could not clear it. Like Susanne's experience, Russell was no help at all with this issue so I had no choice but involve a THIRD attorney who had NO TROUBLE clearing title. Russell just couldn't be bothered to even try. Or course he was more than happy to pass the cost of the failed attempt to clear as well as the successful title clearing cost on to me. At the closing, he also provided a generous dose of arrogance when he thratened to cancel the closing if I refused to pay ALL the fees. Even his office paralegal told me that I shouldn't have to pay the fees. Thanks for NOTHING.

After meeting with Mr. Gilbert in his law office for reviewing my case documents and having consultation. Mr Gilbert agreed to represent me in court. First thing he asked me to is to go to court to get him some documents. He didn't preform any work towards my case. I did send him some documents and pictures weeks before the court day he called me on Friday to give me directions to pick him up on Monday from his house and take him to court!! When I asked Mr. Gilbert what is his preparation about the pictures and the documents I sent him for Monday court; his answers was Mr. Gilbert didn't do any filing or provide any work towards my case except returning my phone calls. He did not assign himself in court as my attorney to represent me in the court. Do not waste your time and your case because of this lazy guy, be careful save your money and do not trust this guy....

I wish I checked Avvo before I employed Galen's services. To say I was disappointed would be an understatement. We lost an easy case, I wanted to protect my assets as afforded to me by law and Mr. Gilbert only really had to see through pre trial hearings but instead he compelled me to give up information that I didn't want to give and didn't have to give, but he assured me it would be ok. It wasn't. I had to settle for thousands and he quickly ditched me afterwards. I do not recommend this lawyer.

Hired to help settle an estate that had no challenges. Out of state, so we were told a lawyer would allow us to avoid posting bond. After initially hiring her, we found her difficult to reach and very unresponsive. In short, she had too big a workload and we got short shrift. Despite being a "firm", none of the other lawyers ever jumped in to help when Mary wasn't available. Overall quality of representation was so bad she waived her final bill.Would highly recommend that people look elsewhere.

I was extremely disappointed in this attorney's handling of my case. Once he received his retainer, his initial interest and indignation over my situation quickly subsided. In fact, the retainer issue itself was very deceptive. He first told me that his retainer was half of what most firms charge. A few weeks later I got a call from him asking for another ten thousand dollars. Then yet another call of "Hey, when you get a chance can you send us another five thousand". So I was enticed by a lower number (presumably to avoid "sticker shock") and then billed incrementally, ultimately paying the same amount he'd criticized other firms for charging. After a year I was in pretty much the same situation where I was when I'd started but out a tremendous amount of money. Sadly, there was a young attorney assisting on the case who was smart, energetic and extremely perceptive who I believe would have had a genuine chance at prevailing. I sent her a letter asking if she could handle my case independently, and she responded that she could not as she was still an "associate" and thus not able to take cases independently. Shortly afterward, I received a further bill from Atty. O'Regan charging me for the time it took her to write her response. I think this last incident pretty much sums up my experience with this individual.

What a Trusts Lawyer Can Do for You

A trusts lawyer specializes in creating and managing trusts, which are legal entities that allow individuals to transfer assets to beneficiaries while maintaining control over how and when those assets are distributed. Trusts are used for estate planning, asset protection, tax planning, and ensuring the financial security of loved ones. Trusts lawyers help clients choose the right type of trust for their needs, draft trust documents, and advise on the administration and management of trusts.

Whether you're planning to pass on your assets to your heirs, protect your wealth from creditors, or provide for a disabled family member, a trusts lawyer can help you establish a trust that meets your financial and personal goals.

When Should I Hire a Trusts Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a trusts lawyer in various situations, particularly when you're planning for the future distribution of your assets or protecting your wealth. Common reasons to hire a trusts lawyer include:

  • Estate planning: If you want to ensure that your assets are distributed according to your wishes, a lawyer can help you create a revocable or irrevocable trust to avoid probate and provide for your heirs.
  • Asset protection: If you want to protect your assets from creditors, lawsuits, or potential future liabilities, a lawyer can help you establish a trust to shield your wealth.
  • Special needs planning: If you have a disabled family member, a lawyer can create a special needs trust to provide for their care without affecting their eligibility for government benefits.
  • Tax planning: If you're looking to minimize estate taxes or manage tax liabilities, a lawyer can help you create tax-advantageous trusts, such as a credit shelter trust or charitable remainder trust.
  • Charitable giving: If you want to leave a legacy through charitable donations, a lawyer can help you set up a charitable trust to ensure your donations are managed according to your wishes.
  • Business succession planning: If you own a business and want to ensure a smooth transition of ownership, a lawyer can help you establish a trust to pass the business on to your heirs or chosen successors.

Hiring a trusts lawyer early in the estate planning process ensures that your assets are protected and your wishes are clearly documented, reducing the chances of disputes after your death.

What Does a Trusts Lawyer Do?

A trusts lawyer provides a variety of legal services to help individuals create, manage, and administer trusts. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Drafting trust documents: Preparing the legal documents needed to create the trust, ensuring it is tailored to your specific goals and complies with state and federal laws.
  • Choosing the right type of trust: Assisting clients in selecting the most appropriate type of trust for their needs, whether it's a revocable trust, irrevocable trust, living trust, or special needs trust.
  • Trust administration: Guiding trustees through their legal responsibilities, including managing assets, making distributions to beneficiaries, and filing tax returns.
  • Modifying or terminating trusts: Helping modify or terminate trusts if circumstances change, such as changes in tax laws, family situations, or personal preferences.
  • Protecting beneficiaries' interests: Structuring trusts to protect the interests of beneficiaries, especially if there are concerns about financial management, disability, or dependency issues.
  • Minimizing estate taxes: Assisting clients in structuring their trusts to minimize or avoid estate taxes, ensuring more of the estate passes to beneficiaries.
  • Handling disputes: Mediating or representing clients in court if disputes arise among beneficiaries or between trustees and beneficiaries.

How Are Trusts Lawyers Paid?

Trusts lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the trust and the type of legal work involved. Common payment methods include:

  • Flat fee: For drafting basic trusts, such as revocable living trusts or special needs trusts, many lawyers charge a flat fee. This can range from $1,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the trust.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex trust planning, ongoing trust administration, or resolving disputes, some lawyers charge by the hour. Hourly rates typically range from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Retainer: For long-term trust administration or complex estate planning cases, some lawyers may require a retainer, an upfront payment that covers ongoing services.
  • Contingency fee (rare): In rare cases, particularly in disputes involving the administration of a trust, lawyers may work on a contingency fee basis, getting paid only if they successfully recover funds or resolve a legal dispute in your favor.

Always discuss the fee structure with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand the total cost of services.

How Much Does a Trusts Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a trusts lawyer depends on the complexity of the trust, the lawyer’s experience, and the fee structure. General cost estimates include:

  • Basic trust creation: For simple trusts, such as revocable living trusts, fees may range from $1,000 to $3,000.
  • Complex trust creation: For sophisticated estate plans involving multiple trusts, tax planning strategies, or special needs considerations, legal fees may range from $5,000 to $10,000 or more.
  • Trust administration: If you are serving as a trustee and need ongoing legal advice, hourly rates for trust administration can range from $150 to $500 or more.
  • Dispute resolution: Costs for litigation or mediation in trust disputes may range from $5,000 to $50,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the case.

Be sure to get a detailed cost estimate from your lawyer during the consultation to ensure the services fit within your budget.

Top Questions to Ask a Trusts Lawyer

Before hiring a trusts lawyer, consider asking the following questions:

  1. What experience do you have with creating trusts?
Ensure the lawyer has experience drafting trusts and managing trust administration for clients with similar goals or asset structures.
  2. What types of trusts do you recommend for my situation?
Ask the lawyer to explain the different types of trusts available and which ones best suit your needs.
  3. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify the fee structure and request an estimate of the total cost.
  4. What are the tax implications of the trust?
Ensure the lawyer can explain how the trust will affect your taxes and strategies to minimize tax liability.
  5. How long will it take to set up the trust?
Ask for a timeline for creating and finalizing the trust documents.
  6. Will you handle the trust administration?
If ongoing management is required, inquire whether the lawyer will assist with trust administration or if you'll need a separate trustee.
  7. Can you help resolve disputes if they arise?
Ask about the lawyer's experience in resolving trust disputes.

How to Check the Credibility of a Trusts Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable trusts lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and has no disciplinary actions.
  • Look for trust law experience: Review their website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in estate planning and trusts.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for feedback on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google.
  • Ask for references: Request references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Check for certifications: Look for certifications such as Certified Estate Planning Law Specialist (EPLS) or memberships in organizations like the American Academy of Estate Planning Attorneys (AAEPA).

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a trusts lawyer, bring the following:

  • List of assets: Prepare a list of all your assets, including real estate, bank accounts, investments, retirement accounts, and personal property.
  • List of beneficiaries: Provide names and contact information of individuals or organizations you want to name as beneficiaries.
  • Existing estate planning documents: Bring copies of any existing wills, trusts, or other estate planning documents.
  • Financial information: Bring financial statements, tax returns, and other relevant financial documentation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare a list of questions about the trust creation process, fees, and how the trust will protect your assets and beneficiaries.
  • Goals for the trust: Clearly outline your objectives, such as asset protection, tax minimization, or provisions for beneficiaries, so the lawyer can tailor the trust to your needs.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your situation effectively and receive the best possible legal advice for creating and managing your trust.
