Andrew and Arlo were wonderful to work with! I represented the seller on a real estate transaction, and they were very professional, efficient, and easy to communicate with. They had the drive to get the job closed even though several hurdles came up during the transaction. I cannot recommend enough!

Arlo, Andrew, & Beth are great! They take the time to listen to you about what’s important to you in passing money to your heirs. They’re very knowledgeable on estate planning laws. They even know the minute differences in law between different counties in IL and what to avoid. They have a streamlined process in place which makes putting your essential estate documents in place easy. And they charge a fair and reasonable price.

I cannot express my gratitude enough for  FOX & FOX, S.C. and especially Mr. Randall Gold. I came to the firm at a time when I thought all was hopeless and I that I was going to have to leave my graduate position after spending five dedicated years in graduate school without my PhD - which was devastating.  I had reached out to other firms, but none were willing to take my case because, even though I was an employee at the university I attended, I was also a student - each firm denied me, stating they were not well versed enough to handle my case. Mr. Gold, did not see me as just a student but as a person who desperately needed assistance. He not only was willing to take my case, but was passionate and sympathetic. Mr. Gold always made time for my questions, was prompt with feedback, and was kind and patient. He was also honest with me, and made sure to convey realistic expectations to me - which was greatly appreciated. In my opinion, Mr. Gold went above and beyond what I had expected - his expertise with the law and guidance always made me feel at ease while I was going through a terrible situation.  I do not believe I would have been able to finish my PhD if Mr. Gold hadn't been willing to pursue my discrimination case. I still cannot believe that the ruling has been in my favor and the university is willing to help me graduate. Mr. Gold and the FOX & FOX, S.C. law firm is amazing and should be celebrated because they hold institutions accountable for the injustices they commit and ensure that people receive the fair treatment they deserve.

Attorney Gold first represented me with my discrimination case 2002 and most recent case 2016. I can only describe my experience with this law firm as positive. Not only is Attorney Randall Gold very professional in the way that he has dealt with me, but also through every proceeding that transpired. He knows the law and is superior at advising. I could not be happier. Excellent Service and a prompt call back!

I hired Randall to help me through a sudden job termination that involved retaliation after filing a complaint against my manager who exhibited a pattern of damaging childish behavior of disparaging Asians and Jews, among many other terrible things. This being my first ever experience of this nature, I did a lot of online research before choosing Randall of Fox and Fox. I wanted a lawyer that would represent me in a reasonable and fair way. As much as I was disappointed in the way my job ended and the company continues to harbor a known racist/anti Semite, I was not out to do damage. The severance I was initially offered was decent, but I knew the context of my termination was not. Because of that, I sought representation. After meeting with Randall in person, I was confident he was the lawyer to help me through this. He was straight forward and told me what to expect, what was reasonable, and what was fantasy. Randall was quick to respond to emails and kept me up to date every step of the way. He listened to and respected my opinions. On occasion, he would talk me off the ledge and remind me things will be resolved quickly and to my advantage. I never felt belittled or that he was ignoring my emails/phone calls. He treated me and worked with me with respect. Randall got me a great settlement in a short amount of time to avoid proceeding to court. I wanted this whole thing resolved quickly so I could move forward!

My experience with Hurley McKenna and Mertz was nothing short of exceptional. From the moment I first contacted them, it was clear that I was in good hands. The team, led by Michael T. Mertz, took the time to understand every aspect of my case, no matter how complex it was. They were patient, thorough, and made sure I fully understood the legal process at every stage. It was obvious that they genuinely cared about my situation and were committed to doing their best for me. One thing that stood out to me was the level of professionalism and integrity they displayed throughout my case. In an industry where it can sometimes be hard to trust who is truly on your side, I never once doubted their dedication to me as a client. They worked tirelessly to ensure that every detail was carefully examined and that no stone was left unturned. Even when challenges arose, they were there to guide me and reassure me that they were doing everything possible to address the situation. Michael T. Mertz, in particular, was outstanding. His legal expertise and knowledge were evident from the start, but what really impressed me was his compassion. He treated me like more than just a case number, and his personal attention made me feel confident and supported. He listened to my concerns, answered all my questions, and kept me informed of any updates. In moments where I felt overwhelmed, he took the time to explain everything clearly and help me see the bigger picture. His calm, caring demeanor made a huge difference during a stressful time. While I have seen a few reviews of this firm that mentioned the length of time their cases took, I have to disagree with those criticisms. Legal matters, especially complex cases, take time to handle properly. Rushing through important details could mean missing out on key factors that could affect the outcome. I appreciated that Hurley McKenna and Mertz took their time to ensure that my case was handled with care, and it was clear that they were committed to achieving the best possible result rather than rushing to wrap things up quickly. In the end, I felt not only that I had chosen the right legal team, but that I was treated with respect, compassion, and fairness. I would highly recommend Hurley McKenna and Mertz to anyone who is dealing with a complicated legal situation. If you want lawyers who are thorough, honest, and genuinely care about their clients, this is the firm you should turn to. They exceeded my expectations and went above and beyond to make sure I had the support I needed throughout the entire process. I couldn’t have asked for better representation, and I am incredibly grateful for their hard work and dedication.

If I could give attorney Zhao a below one, it would most definitely be a 0. She has poor manners and didn't think my spouse case was work, who responds to a client stating "I have been very busy with work" like my spouse case wasn't work. Then gets upset and removed herself from the case after filling into the case because you don't like corrective criticism, how unethical. When she calls her clients she is very disgruntled and pushy, can't be so sure if its a personality conflict or a color/race conflict, but whatever it is. I would not recommend her for any case learn how to treat your clients. You won't make it very far being rude, people are no longer standing for bad behaviors.

When you are terminated, regardless of the reason, you find yourself lost a sea. The self doubt, negative self talk and second guessing can cripple you. Catherine represented me in an employment law case and every encounter was compassionate. I was never just a call she made that day. She explained, double explained then over explained to make sure I knew what was happening in my case. She stood up for me against my former employer and helped me regain the self confidence I lost due to my termination. During deposition she was a force to reckoned with and allowed me to witness a strong female to emulate during my deposition. She stood up for me and is truly a hero for those who have been unjustly terminated.

Lisa Stauff was my attorney for many years so I know her well. She was consistently very difficult to communicate with, sometimes taking a few months to get back to me about my case. But the worst is that after paying her thousands of dollars over the years, she failed to reply to the court on a motion to dismiss my case. The Judge gave Lisa multiple chances to file a reply but she failed to do so. The Judge had no choice but to dismiss my case. On top of that, Lisa has not even communicated the dismissal of my case to me. I had to write the Judge to find out the status of my case and its been two years.

I have to admit, after nearly 5 years of working with them and still not having my debt paid off, it feels like this process wasn't worth it. I have one remaining debt of $12K, and nearly $9K in my account that needs to be paid off. Yet, every month, it feels like the balance never gets closer to being resolved. At this point, I don’t understand why they can't call the creditor and negotiate directly. It finally dawned on me that the reason might be the high fees they charge. Honestly, I wouldn’t recommend them again, and I am determined to stay out of debt just to avoid working with them in the future. On top of that, my account password never works, and I never receive the reset email. For a company taking in so much money, having a properly functioning website should be a basic expectation—it's almost laughable.

Mr Benedetto represented me in my divorce. My case had international elements, and I had previously consulted another lawyer who told me that even serving my foreign spouse would be very difficult. Mr. Benedetto got this important task done easily and quickly. Right away, he had some creative ideas that I would not have thought of, and that I believe most lawyers would not have thought of. These creative ideas led to a very good settlement for me, whereas less creative thinking would have probably left me with very little. He was knowledgeable throughout and struck a good balance between consulting me as to what I wished done, but advising me on what would be best. I never felt he forced my hand, but still, he had a way of easing me into what would be most in my interest for me to do. I would say he is a peacemaker at heart, which is not what one expects from a lawyer. But I feel it is the best approach in family law cases, and in my case led to settlement. The opposing lawyer was always trying to fight, and to escalate situations that were already anger provoking. Mr. Benedetto had a great way of calming the situation at various junctions where, without his input, I think a settlement might have become impossible due to the anger of everyone else involved, including the other lawyer! Another real plus is that he is very easy to get in touch with. I have heard nightmarish stories from friends who hired other lawyers, who were not responsive to their calls. Mr. Benedetto was very responsive and available. He really made me feel as if my case was special. I'm sure he makes every client feel this way, and I highly recommend him as a great lawyer, ethical person and just an all around good man.

This experience with Judd Azulay was horrible. He took tens of thousands of dollars (originally he wanted $250,000 as - according to him, there was a way to "invest" and get legal status that way), but he settled for another way, which resulted in creating and unnecessary huge complication to the case and a made a detrimental order and decision on the case by INS. He himself never was available to represent the client but either sent a less competent partner to the hearing or young just starting out inexperienced attorneys. None of whom ever even reviewed the file, and were completely confused when questioned by official at hearings! It all came to a screeching halt when their incompetence yielded an order for deportation for their client, and when that client chose to leave Azulays practice and seek another counsel, (and an extremely expensive and extensive appeal process- due to THEIR wrong doing)Azulay wouldn't release the files unless the client paid nearly $10,000 just to get their own file to transfer. Horrible attorneys along with much of the office staff. Wouldn't recommend them them to worst enemy.

Unfortunately I did not have a good experience with Attorney Scarry. She was really eager to look into my case, however when I called her and left messages that I was terminated from my job, she never returned my phone calls. I called the office and her cellphone, which she gave to me numerous times, I was in distress that my life was falling apart due to a loss of my job and career, and she never returned my calls. It was very unfortunate and sad experience for me, and I just don't understand why such a respectable and well known attorney can't just be up front and say that she was not interested in my case, instead of giving me false hopes, and not calling me back when I needed her the most! I hope that she will never experience in her lifetime what I experienced, the loss of the job and the career!

What a Wrongful Termination Lawyer Can Do for You

A wrongful termination lawyer specializes in representing employees who have been illegally fired or laid off from their jobs. Wrongful termination occurs when an employer violates federal or state laws, employment agreements, or public policy when dismissing an employee. These lawyers help clients understand their rights, evaluate the legality of their termination, and pursue legal action to recover damages such as lost wages, benefits, and emotional distress.

If you believe you have been wrongfully terminated, a lawyer can guide you through the complex legal process, negotiate with your former employer, and advocate on your behalf to achieve a fair resolution.

When Should I Hire a Wrongful Termination Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a wrongful termination lawyer if you have been fired under circumstances that may violate the law. Common reasons include:

  • Discrimination: If you were terminated based on your race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age (40 or older), disability, or genetic information, this may constitute illegal discrimination under federal laws like Title VII of the Civil Rights Act or the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Retaliation: If you were fired for reporting illegal activities, discrimination, harassment, or for participating in an investigation or lawsuit against your employer, this may be illegal retaliation.
  • Violation of Employment Contract: If you have an employment contract that outlines specific terms for termination and your employer breaches these terms, you may have a claim for wrongful termination.
  • Public Policy Violations: If you were terminated for reasons that violate public policy, such as refusing to engage in illegal activities, taking time off for jury duty, or exercising your legal rights (e.g., taking family medical leave), a lawyer can help.
  • Whistleblower Protection: If you were fired after reporting your employer's illegal activities to a government agency (whistleblowing), you may be protected under specific laws.

Hiring a lawyer promptly is crucial, as there are strict deadlines (statutes of limitations) for filing wrongful termination claims.

What Does a Wrongful Termination Lawyer Do?

A wrongful termination lawyer provides various services to help you pursue a claim against your former employer:

  • Case Evaluation: Assess the facts of your termination to determine if your employer violated any laws or breached your employment contract.
  • Legal Advice: Explain your rights under federal and state laws and advise on the best course of action.
  • Filing Claims: Assist in filing a complaint with appropriate government agencies, such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) or state labor departments, if required before suing.
  • Negotiation: Engage in settlement discussions with your former employer to seek compensation without going to court.
  • Litigation: Represent you in court if a lawsuit is necessary, presenting evidence, questioning witnesses, and making legal arguments to support your case.
  • Documentation and Evidence Gathering: Help collect and organize necessary documents, such as employment contracts, company policies, performance reviews, emails, and witness statements.
  • Protecting Against Retaliation: Advise you on how to handle any retaliation or further adverse actions from your former employer.

How Are Wrongful Termination Lawyers Paid?

Wrongful termination lawyers typically charge for their services in one of the following ways:

  • Contingency Fee: Many work on a contingency basis, meaning they only get paid if you win or settle your case. Their fee is a percentage of the compensation you receive, usually ranging from 25% to 40%.
  • Hourly Rate: Some lawyers charge an hourly rate, which can range from $200 to $600 or more, depending on experience and location.
  • Retainer Fee: A retainer is an upfront payment against which the lawyer bills their hourly rate. Once the retainer is exhausted, you may need to replenish it.
  • Flat Fee: For specific services, such as reviewing a severance agreement, a lawyer might charge a flat fee.

It's important to discuss payment arrangements during your initial consultation to understand how fees and expenses will be handled.

How Much Does a Wrongful Termination Lawyer Cost?

The cost varies based on the complexity of your case, the lawyer's experience, and the fee arrangement:

  • Contingency Fees: If you win or settle, the lawyer's fee will be a percentage of the award. For example, if you settle for $100,000 and the contingency fee is 30%, the lawyer receives $30,000.
  • Hourly Rates: Total costs depend on the number of hours worked. A straightforward case might require 20 hours ($4,000 to $12,000), while complex cases can exceed 100 hours.
  • Additional Expenses: Be aware of other costs such as court filing fees, costs for depositions, expert witness fees, and administrative expenses, which may be billed separately.

Always request a written fee agreement detailing all potential costs.

Top Questions to Ask a Wrongful Termination Lawyer

  1. What is your experience with wrongful termination cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience and a successful track record.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Understand the fee structure and any additional costs.
  3. What is the likely outcome of my case?
Get an honest assessment of your chances of success and potential compensation.
  4. What is the estimated timeline for resolving my case?
Know how long the process may take, from filing to settlement or trial.
  5. What steps will you take to build my case?
Understand the strategy and what will be required from you.
  6. Will my case go to trial, or can it be settled out of court?
Discuss the possibilities and implications of each option.
  7. How will you keep me informed about my case?
Ensure there will be regular updates and open communication.

How to Check the Credibility of a Wrongful Termination Lawyer

  • Verify Their License: Check your state's bar association website to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  • Review Their Experience: Look for lawyers who specialize in employment law and have specific experience with wrongful termination cases.
  • Read Client Reviews: Websites like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google Reviews can provide insights into the lawyer's reputation.
  • Ask for References: Reputable lawyers should be willing to provide references from past clients.
  • Professional Memberships: Membership in organizations like the National Employment Lawyers Association (NELA) indicates a focus on employment law.
  • Disciplinary Record: Ensure the lawyer has no history of disciplinary actions or complaints.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting:

  • Employment Documents: Bring your employment contract, employee handbook, offer letters, termination letter, and any severance agreements.
  • Performance Records: Include performance reviews, commendations, or any disciplinary actions.
  • Correspondence: Provide emails, texts, or memos related to your termination or any incidents leading up to it.
  • Witness Information: List names and contact information of colleagues who can support your claims.
  • Timeline of Events: Prepare a detailed account of events, including dates and descriptions of incidents.
  • Previous Complaints: If you filed complaints with HR or external agencies, bring copies.
  • Questions: Write down any questions you have about your case or the legal process.

Being well-prepared helps the lawyer assess your situation effectively and advise you on the best course of action.
