It’s not uncommon for attorneys to consult with other attorneys. An area of law surfaced that was outside my scope of Practice. Jon was happy to take the time to give me thoughtful and sound advice. I’d highly recommend Jon Martin.

I had to undergo a bankruptcy due to circumstances that were out of my control with a business that I previously owned. Mr. Martin has been very detailed and has left no stone unturned. There are many aspects to this that have made this a difficult case and Mr. Martin has been there all the way. Ms. Shirley has also been wonderful to work with. I would recommend Mr. Martin for anyone going through a difficult case.

Just received my chapter 7 discharge. Throughout the entire process, Mr. Martin was available to answer my endless questions, often injecting a wry sense of humor which helped to put me at ease. He thoroughly described to me what to expect at my meeting with the trustee, and although I was advised to answer all questions truthfully, having a pretty good idea of the questions that would be asked also made that experience less stressful. I would highly recommend Mr. Martin to anyone in the area seeking bankruptcy information/representation.

I cannot say enough about this man. So patient, good instincts, good decisions, so personable. Did I mention patient? He put up with my million questions without batting an eye. A little more expensive but WORTH EVERY PENNY! He saved me from 3 to 5 years wallowing in a chapter 13. I'm so happy I quit my original attorney. It's all over like he promised and I'm already starting to rebuild my life less than 2 months after discharge. I had a sticky case but he was willing to fight if needed, but he was also correct in what he thought would happen. I'm just SO HAPPY with this office! Thank you Susan! Thank you Shirley! And thank you Mr. Martin!

With humble and reverent speech, Mr. Sosa calms parties on both sides of the table and has an uncanny ability to dissect intricate matters. I have and will continue to always refer friends, family and acquaintances to Mr. Sosa.

From day one with the initial consultation, you can already feel the difference between a normal attorney and Luis. He exceeded all expectations and I highly recommend him to anyone looking for an attorney. He always kept me in the loop with the status of my case and always told it me it to me straight. He made me feel comfortable the entire time and never made me feel like just a "client". He worked hard on my case, put in countless hours and always ensured all paperwork was being done accurately and timely. He never stopped until justice was served in my case and I am forever grateful to him. His professionalism and passion truly shows and he has a very bright career ahead of him. Any time I ever need an attorney, I would never think twice.

I had so many questions about the legal process and Luis spent as much time as I needed explaining the process. He made me feel very at ease in our meeting and was very genuine. He was extremely knowledgeable and the staff was pleasant and helpful. Luis handled our legal case with great integrity, caring for our interests with patience and a lot of hard work on his part. His professionalism was second to none and his aggressiveness to make sure justice was served in my case was always above and beyond. Anyone looking for a lawyer will be in the absolute best hands with Luis. I highly recommend this excellent attorney. I cannot say enough positive words.

I would just like to say that we are so thankful we found Mr. Charles Ray when we had no hope left. It is nearly impossible to win a will contest in probate litigation from what I hear, but Mr, Ray pulled through and saved our family home for us in an undue influence case. I as well as my sister and all our family will always be grateful to this man for helping us, he was a fire cracker in court saying all the right things when they needed to be said and helping the judge see exactly what had actually transpired.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Port Saint Lucie, Florida?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
