“A steady hand on the tiller, stays the course.” Our Case was not a quick and easy issue but Matt saw it through to the end. We got everything we requested and then some in what we considered was fair and equitable to both sides. To Matt and his Team, Bravo Zulu! That’s Navy-speak for “Good Job”.

Mercer Kutch is an excellent law firm. Matt Mercer expertly helped me and my family with a construction law issue. Our builder had improperly poured the concrete foundation. Matt provided us legal counsel that helped solve our construction issues!

Just received (from a "No-Reply" mailbox) an unsigned admonishment from someone at this firm. (I'm betting the rude secretary) Long story short: Was scheduled for a 20 minute consultation ($25) called at the scheduled time and received an odd message while never being connected ""Mercer Law PA, Server error. Try again later". Tried 2 more times with the same result. Called their main number with again, the same result. Received a call from "Rude Secretary" TELLING me I was forgetful and inconsiderate and that I was going to be charged even though I "forgot" to call in at my allotted time. I attempted to communicate with the RS, the nature of the issue and was ignored. RS then told me the lawyer would speak to me but only for 10 minutes because of my rudeness and inconsideration. I declined and will not be using nor recommending this firm.

Angela was the "best" part of my divorce, besides getting divorced! She was professional, always explained everything to me and just nice to be around. I loved Chris her assistant she never made me feel bad for calling for asking a question, no matter how much I called. The decisions to hire Angela was the best decision I made besides getting divorced!

Angela got me through a rough divorce and was absolutely wonderful. She answered my calls, letters and emails promptly and her assistant Chris is the best. I would highly recommend Angela if you're needing a hard working, knowledgeable lawyer who prides herself on honesty, integrity and high morals- She won't beat around the bush- she will give you her honest opinion along with being patient and understanding. She doesn't stoop to sling mud or try destroy others reputations- she takes the high road. She's a class act and I can't say enough about her or Chris. They handled me with kid gloves and I knew they were beside me the whole way. If I ever need a lawyer- Angela's the one.

In 2006, I went to meet with Carol Caldwell. I was not in a happy situation and concerned about my future. A friend recommended I write a few notes about my situation. My notes turned out to be five pages typed single-spaced. When I met with Carol, I told her I had notes. She read the five pages. She looked at me and asked if I had any idea how much danger I was in. That was when the walls of shame and secrecy came crashing down. My husband was severely abusive, but I was too ashamed to admit it. Carol lay down her requirements: I needed to get in contact with Betty Griffin House for a place to stay and counseling before she'd begin the process. Once that happened, she moved fast. I had an injunction in two weeks and the divorce was final in six weeks. To say she changed my life is an understatement. She saved my life. She did not accept a case for the sake of work. She focused on my safety and well-being. Every step of the way, there were moments where the counseling at Betty Griffin helped me. I do not believe I would be where I am now if I had chosen any other lawyer. She is undoubtedly, the best there is.

I highly recommend Carol Caldwell as an attorney. I hired her to represent me in a highly contested divorce case involving children. She always had my children's best interest at heart and fought hard for them and me. She is a force to be reckoned with in the court room. She is always so well prepared and meticulous in every detail, resourceful, creative and knows the Florida law. Anything the opposing counsel threw at us never caused Miss Caldwell to stumble. She was available to answer my questions and concerns at all times. Her response to every, email, text or phone message was prompt. From my first meeting with her to the final hearing she was professional but extremely easy to talk to. Miss Caldwell always took the time to make sure I understood the proceedings and that I was prepared for court hearings. Miss Caldwell's office staff are also amazing. They went above and beyond to help me and my children many times. They always encouraged me, kept me informed, and very helpful with paper work. The whole team worked well together on my case.

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Saint Augustine, Florida?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
