My son Officer Michael Weiskopf of the St. Petersburg Police Department went in to the hospital with Covid 8/1/21 and his wife would not let us have any contact with Michael. She would not let us text him, call him, face-time him or visit him. She told the nursing staff not to give us any information on my son's condition. If we wanted any updates, we would have to go through her. She was giving us erroneous information and that is when we found our Guardian Angel Matt. Matt worked miracles and we were then able to get correct information on my son's condition from a reliable source. He also helped us get an object in my name that Mike's wife didn't want to give us, even though it was her husband's wishes that his brother have this object. My son's wife never told us that my son died and that there was a funeral planned by the St. Petersburg Police Department. Matt is one of a kind. He is compassionate, kind, caring, sensitive and is a super Professional. He knows his craft and he gets things done. If I lived in Florida, he would become my trusted Attorney. I can't say enough wonderful things about Matt. G-d Bless you Matt for all that you have done for us.

I did a lot of research before hiring an attorney to assist me with the probate process. I ultimately chose Matt because I liked his website. He has plenty of videos that explain “legalese” for people like me who have no idea what it all means and he seemed really involved (something that a lot of attorneys aren’t). It turned out that Mr. Weidner was as involved as he seemed and he didn’t hesitate to answer any one of my million and one questions about what was happening during my daughter’s probate. Even though she had planned out her estate before her death and put everything in order and I had agreed to be her estate executive I have to admit to not having any idea what to do. I had agreed to the role because she asked me to, but luckily I came across Mr. Weidner and he made the whole thing seem much easier than the other lawyers I talked to. In the end probate went well. Actually, it was draining and devastating but the process itself was easier than I thought it was going to be which was one burden lifted. When things have settled down for us in our new life without my daughter, I plan to go back to Mr. Weidner to talk to him about my own estate planning. Now that I’m raising my grandchildren, I have a lot of changes to make and I’m hoping Mr. Weidner can make it as easy as he did our probate.

I sought out the assistance of Matt Weidner after my father passed away. I already had experience with probate after my mother died, but my father’s estate was a bit more complicated…a LOT more complicated and I really didn’t know where to begin. Matt was very supportive in helping me to organize my father’s affairs and get through probate, but he also went out of his way to explain each step and complication we ran into so that I knew exactly what was going on all of the time. If I’m being honest, as the CEO of a larger company, I am used to being the guy who controls it all, so I can’t explain how much I appreciated Matt’s level of transparency and recognition of how important it was to regularly check-in with me and follow up. I can’t say that this experience with probate was pleasant, in fact, it was extremely frustrating, but I felt a lot more capable of handling it with Matt’s advice and his simply being there to answer questions that I had (and there were a lot!) I don’t believe that anyone can ever feel “satisfied” by the probate process, but it does help to have someone that you can ask questions of, particularly when the person whose estate you are dealing with is the one you would normally consult with such questions.

We (my wife and I) met with Mr. Weidner regarding the probate of my father’s estate. We’re also dealing with my mother’s Alzheimer’s disease which means that there are limitations on my resources and I just need someone to help me get my father’s estate taken care of so I can continue caring for my mother. When I called Mr. Weidner’s office, I explained that I had very strict restraints on my schedule and needed to be sure that even a consultation didn’t fall outside of my available time and his receptionist was very accommodating. When we arrived for our consultation, Mr. Weidner was waiting for us and walked us right back to his office and we got right to business. I couldn’t hide the fact that I was stunned at how seriously Mr. Weidner and his staff took my concerns over punctuality, but he explained to me that he understood the demands of caring for an elderly parent and probate wasn’t a hassle I should have to deal with on top of that. I agreed but couldn’t help thinking that he was simply after my business – I’m a salesman, so I know the deal – but as I spoke with Mr. Weidner I realized that he actually does care about the impact of what he does on the people who hire him. Every professional should be good at what they do (and Mr. Weidner definitely seems to be in my limited experience), but our consultation also reminded me of how important it is to be listened to and tehre’s no doubt that Mr. Weidner and his staff did that. My wife and I still have one more consultation (a friend of someone she works with, so I’m obligated to hear him out), but if I go with my gut, Mr Weidner will be my probate attorney in the next week or so.

Anne Ricke has been the best. She has helped me with my elder father and his brother with estates, trusts, durable power of attorney, and summary of administration (handling estates with no will). If you need any of these complex legal services I expect Anne would be most helpful to you too.

Anne Ricke is wonderful at what she does. I was helping my client get on Medicaid and it was a grueling experience, to say the least. Anne helped me by explaining everything in laymans terms so I could understand. She is patient and I never felt rushed or brushed off.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Saint Petersburg, Florida?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
