I spent an entire years salary in legal fees over the course of 15 months with Meriwether & Tharp and in my opinion I have very little to show for it. I did not receive custody arrangements that I was satisfied with, and only a third of my legal fees my ex-husband caused me to incur by dragging out the process, and little more than a quarter of the equity in the home my ex-husband and I had bought together. When I spoke to them about how they handled my case they told me they did what they could within the parameters of the legal system. This may be accurate, but they did a poor job by not answering my questions and returning my emails. Towards the end they would often avoid any type of communication, once actually not allowing me to even make an appointment to speak to anyone on my legal team. Eventually I had to take a day off to go up to their office and demand to speak to someone regarding my case / to find out why no one would talk to me. An entire years salary in legal fees and nothing to show for it means I either was taken advantage of or had poor legal representation, you can decide which. They never got full discovery, even though I explained he was hiding money and lying about his income; this was later corroborated by his own sister unfortunately after trail. They decided not to bother applying for temporary support, which resulted in me being without financial help caring for my daughter without any assistance for almost a year. My attorney at Meriwether & Tharp also misled me on possible settlements until right before trial when she then informed me it would basically be a wash. This meant they had literally been charging me to fight for nothing but encouraging me to do so in the hopes of getting me funds to cover legal fees incurred. My mistake may have been paying my bills in full as they came in and exposing myself as a soft target. These are the more major things that I can remember as it was a very traumatic time in my life. I hired Meriwether & Tharp to protect me and guide me through the process, not guide me to their pockets. Whichever lawyer you choose, protect yourself so you don't end up like I did; chewed up and spit out. Follow up every call with an email covering what you discussed, and keep notes. I did not know that I would need to protect myself against my own lawyers. Please learn from my mistake.
