My husband was searching for a rightful lawyer via goggle for a legal situation we were put into. Atty. Slivnick was so interested with the case that he stood by us and truly helped us along the way. He became not only our lawyer for the case but became our friend as well. Now, with any legal question we can come to him anytime and now our legal counsel. More power, Atty. Slivnick!

If I can mark ZERO STARS, I most definitely would. My medical account was transferred to this company by a hospital, for reasons not to do with collections, but apparently to determine the liable party for my claims. I called after being directed to do so by Northshore Hospitals, where my services were rendered. They informed me that this company has my claim info and could help me. I encountered the most rude person on the other end of the phone, Trish, who was apparently annoyed by my call and the fact that I have questions that I deserve to have answers to and deserve to understand the situation. I was told "she doesn't have time to continue to talk to me" "she has work to do and even if she stayed all day night and weekend she would not be done with her work!" Jennifer Powers and David Moon, please hire thus lady some help or get her some customer service training! Not my fault she's overwhelmed and no one should be talked to in the manner or tone of voice this lady was using. Also, was not my choice to have my account sent her! I was simply trying to understand the process and get the answers I deserve!

Pros
1
Expertise in complex foreclosure and real estate law
“He is an expert in this unfortunate situation. I worked with others and no one compares to his understanding of not only foreclosure but real estate law.”
2
Persistence and methodical approach to securing favorable outcomes
“Rick and his time were always very patient when responding to our concerns and were very persistent and methodical when getting the same run-around we received when we communicated with Chase's and Bank of America's work out departments.”
3
Dedication and availability to clients
“I was constantly surprised at how many times the phone forwarded to Rick during off hours. Many Saturdays and Sundays, Rick and/or the team member working on our cases would be in and answering their phones and/or returning voice mails.”
4
Ability to negotiate favorable loan modifications and settlements
“The interest rate was reduced to 2% and the mortgage set to be reduced by a third after 3 years of on-time payments. A sub 4% interest rate on one of the rental properties with a 40 year mortgage (which helps with the payments) and interest only being charged on about two-thirds of the mortgage.”
5
Compassionate and personalized service
“We feel that Rick Lee Rogers is not just an excellent lawyer who has provided us with outstanding service, but he has gone way beyond what is expected of a good lawyer. He has given us emotional support and much more than that.”
Cons

I have been practicing construction and mechanic's lien law for over 30 years so it is not very often that a legal issue will arise that I have not dealt with before or an issue will arise that I want to talk through taking a different strategic approach than I have in the past. Jeremy knows construction and lien law backwards and forwards. So when I have a desire to bounce off an idea or work through a problem I am fortunate to know Jeremy, not just because of his legal acumen, but because he has always taken my call and taken the time to work through any issue with me.

Normally the way I do these reviews your really good at what services you offer that I feel people should know or it's so bad I feel people shouldn't waste their time. Meg is the most thorough lawyer I've ever met and have the honor of having on my team. She would not stop until the questions she has are answered and all legal matters resolved. By far the worth every dollar and more!

I was referred to Meg through a friend and I can easily say that she is the best lawyer that I have ever worked with. Meg is highly experienced in real estate and I will work with her again in a heartbeat. Being a first time home buyer could be nerve wracking but with Meg, it was so easy and straightforward. She took the time to explain the whole process and educate me on the process. She is a real fighter for her clients, very responsive, and extremely thorough (saved me few hundreds by finding an error is sellers tax exemption calculations). I would strongly recommend her to any new home buyer looking for a trustworthy, honest and genuine lawyer. She was so good that I fell the need to write her a recommendation (even though she didn’t ask and I don’t typically write recommendations).

Meg represented us in the purchase of our first home. She came highly recommended by our real estate agents, and, boy, were they right! She is highly knowledgeable and far from timid, which is so reassuring when you're overwhelmed by the home-buying process, which we happened to be in the middle of during COVID-19 and the state's shelter-in-place order to boot! This resulted in a curbside closing (the closing agent brings all the paperwork out to your car) and she took extra care to walk us through everything the day before so we could feel confident without having her physically by our side on closing day. We had plenty of other unusual circumstances throughout the entire process as well, and Meg was on the ball in every possible way. I couldn't possibly recommend her highly enough!

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Deerfield, Illinois?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
