So happy I was connected with Travis Burk at Hope Law. He did not let the insurance company bully me around anymore. It was funny. Teenage girl hit me and her insurance told me I would nevee get anything for pain or suffering. I hire Travis, finished physical therapy for neck/back injury from whiplash... Travis made them pay me for pain and suffering. It is sad you have to hire an attorney sometimes to get what you deserve. Totally worth it though. Travis super nice but a bada$$ when it came to fighting for me. Travis was great. -A.J. Waukee, IA

Travis really took care of things for my husband and I. We were in a near fatal car/truck accident in 2014. He was easy to communicate with and always kept us up to date while fighting for our medical bills and pain and suffering damages vs. the at fault insurance company. Also time off of work and travel expenses, loss of income. We just won our asking amount and are pleased to have this behind us so we can move on with our lives knowing we have everything covered from past medical, along with a nice egg to cover future medical bills and time off work if need be later down the line. We got the max we could have gotten from both the other driver as well as our under insured policy. My niece was rear ended (passenger) in January during ice/sleet on 235 and also hired Travis from Hope Law Office. Nice person and people to work with you at this place. He is on Jordan Creek close to the mall. Good guy. Thanks Donna

Travis Burk handled my personal injury claim after another attorney had it for over a year and was not doing anything about it. When I first handed all the paperwork to Travis Burk he took my case and won it. He answered any questions that I had and also explained anything that I did not understand on my case.

As a real estate agent, it is essential to have someone on your side that will be communicative and work hard. Zimmerman went above and beyond to make sure the process went well.

Ward Rouse was the most helpful of many attorneys I contacted regarding my issue at hand. He listened to my concerns and talked me thru what my options actually were as well as the pros and cons of those options and that was just an upfront, consultation. Very appreciative of his assistance and absolutely recommend him to anyone who isn't sure how to navigate their situation.

I felt incredibly supported and well taken care of throughout the entire process. I highly recommend Jordan for anyone needing legal assistance. I consulted numerous attorneys through out the years regarding my current custody situation and after speaking with Jordan felt he was the right one to move forward with.

I want to thank Sydney Ross for the way she handled my case. It was difficult and required an extensive amount of research. Even though the odds were stacked against her in court, she represented me well. She shared my case with other attorneys in the practice who all supported her. All of the office staff were helpful and courteous. Sydney really cared and I appreciate her.

I am writing to commend Ms. Sydney Ross on her exemplary handling of my recent OWI on a golf cart case in Allamakee County. Ms. Ross was kind, considerate, aggressive, and most of all knowledgeable about the application of law in all four of my charges. Sydney took the time to understand all facets of my case. Her prompt replies to my inquiries assured me I was in capable and expert hands. She was able to access the discovery materials to determine the inaccuracy of the arresting officer’s assumptions. Those materials also included the blood alcohol level way below the legal limit, which was the explanation for the arrest. Her attention to details and ability to ask pertinent questions allowed her to attack the charges and get 3 of the 4 dropped from my file. Sydney’s team of professionals were also expert and well researched in their responses to me. McKayla quickly replied to my questions and if she was unsure, she deferred to Sydney for answers. I would recommend Ms. Sydney Ross to anyone who is struggling with an unjust arrest or charge. Thank you, Sydney! I will gladly put my trust in you again!

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of West Des Moines, Iowa?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
