I fully trust Mr. Malech and endorse him! Trusting someone with your life is what happens when you retain a lawyer. Mr. Malech thinks like a philosopher, explains clearly like a great teacher, uses warm humor, and gives an even-keeled and honest assessment of the possible scenarios. Moreover, he knows the court system inside and out. Mr. Malech's mastery of the law, solid preparation and keen attention to detail led to a great outcome. Mr. Malech and his team are responsive, respectful, and empathetic. He also moves at a fast pace to outmaneuver the other side. Take a look at his Youtube series, "Ask Lloyd." You will see Mr. Malech's sharp communication skills in action!

Brandon and his excellent firm helped us achieve expanded custody for me and my sons. He took care of the details, did the homework, and made it easy to make a really strong case. The results exceeded expectations and I am really glad I chose him as counsel. Many thanks to Brandon and his kind and knowledgeable staff.

I hired Mr. Bernstein after interviewing several other attorneys. He came across very empathetic and honest from the first minute I consulted with him. It was the best choice in my life hiring him as my divorce attorney (after I made the worst choice marrying my ex husband.. ) My divorce case was a mission impossible in the beginning, but Mr. Bernstein took his time leading me through different strategies from mediation to suggesting other experts to move my case forward. He has been kind and available any time I had any concerns. I am naturally an overthinker, but he has helped me to decide when to compromise in a way that best serves my case. He does not escalate conflict, but he will apply pressure when needed. He has lead an excellent deposition in my case that not only helped with our strategy but also provided me with closure. He worth every single penny I paid him. I highly recommend his expertise!

Jan Pederson and her team recently assisted me in my change of visa status, a process I was completely new to and had little knowledge of. This lack of knowledge did not last long as she called me even when she was on vacation to explain the process to me. Apart from making herself available when needed, she and her team worked diligently and ensured the process kept moving forward even when unforeseen obstacles popped up. Really cannot express how grateful I am to have been able to have her to guide me through this process.

Ms. Pederson is the best immigration attorney you can ever ask for. I was able to obtain my green card less than a year with her amazing experience. She has a professional responsive team.

Jan Pederson is an exceptional professional and the best immigration attorney. She and her team were very committed to us throughout the whole process. I have requested her services three times for different reasons, and in each of them, I couldn’t have been more satisfied with the results. She has always made me feel confident and secure, keeping things simple, structured, and impeccably organized because she has many years of experience and knows exactly how to proceed in every circumstance!

Child custody is never easy, especially when involving complicating circumstances. When I approached Mr.Cohn I was scared and a rattled mess. Mr.Cohn had an overwhelming wealth of knowledge and drive to help my case while being sympathetic to our circumstances. He worked diligently with me side by side every step of the way and was able to put me and my family at ease. He was able to break down all of the possible outcomes and explain them in a way I could understand while helping me find the best solution for our family! My experience, though traumatic for me, has been so wonderful thank you to Mr.Cohn and his diligence! I have and will continue to recommend Mr.Cohn to anyone looking for a lawyer with exponential knowledge and drive to bring a reasonable realistic outcome!!

Doug helped guide me through a very complicated custody battle against one of the big family law firms (Delaney McKinney) with both honesty and knowledge, and did it with the utmost efficiency and organization. My custody fight was much longer than I had anticipated but Doug explained each step of the process to me and allowed me to present the type of case that both fit my personality, my parenting style and my income. I wanted to both thoughtfully and firmly defend my rights as a parent, while making sure that during our year long trial, we always respected my spouse, and most importantly didn't do anything which could ever adversely effect my children. After a lot of trial preparation as well as a long trial, I felt good about the representation that was provided and about Dougs emotional support throughout the process. It's clear that his vast experience in, and knowledge of, the Family Court System, is one of the factors that makes him such an effective advocate and helped him win my case. I could not have gotten through it without him. While I know these factors would have been true even if we had lost our case, thankfully my custody case was yet another one which he won!

Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Bethesda, Maryland?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
