During the most horrible time of my life, Erin Kopelman was there for me every step of the way, from the beginning consultation, to the final court proceedings and paperwork. She was always accessible by phone and email, even on weekends. She calmly explained things to me, presented many options, solutions, and she listened to all of my worries and concerns. I’ll never forget, during a particularly difficult, scary moment, even though Erin was out of town with her family, she contacted me immediately to address my situation. I always felt she was extremely knowledgeable about the most current laws, and contract composition. Although she was respectful of opposing counsel, she didn’t accept any nonsense from them, and wasn’t afraid to put them in their place. I felt confident and thankful to have Erin in my corner.

Erin has had my back the entire time through my divorce. She gets back to me, usually, with hours. I felt very strongly that we had a mutually trustful relationship. She trusted that I realistically knew my situation and I trusted her knowledge of the law and opposing counsel. As birds of a feather flock together, I would trust anyone at her firm and all her recommendations.

Erin was my divorce attorney through an extremely messy and contentious situation. During the entire process she was unfailingly patient with me, taking the time to explain some of the more arcane or complex parts of the process to me so that I could better understand (and be responsive to) the many requests by the Court for documents. In addition, Erin was able to rise above the acrimony of the situation and was a constant advocate for fair, negotiated approaches to closing the gap between the parties. In court, she respectfully, but forcefully pushed our positions in a way that was clear, but not antagonizing to the Judge. She is, in short, someone you would be lucky to have on your side. I wholeheartedly recommend her.

I worked with Erin on my rather lengthy, complex divorce proceeding, and from the moment we began working together, I knew Erin was the right fit. She patiently outlined my options at every turn, was incredibly responsive and timely with all filings and inquiries, and presented creative solutions to help navigate what would otherwise have been an incredibly difficult experience. Her whole team of support staff and attorneys were easy to work with, incredibly skilled, and made sure that my divorce proceeding was resolved in the most advantageous way possible. She was available on weekends and after hours as my schedule allowed to check-in on my case, and demonstrated a level of empathy and patience for my situation that left a lasting impression. I cannot recommend her enough for any case of a sensitive or personal nature - she's skilled, professional, and effective, and also supportive and empathetic.

Erin is a tremendous attorney who helped me manage my divorce both legally and personally. Her kind empathy toward me and her sharp, effective engagement with opposing counsel was the perfect balance needed to smoothly navigate a challenging divorce and custody process. I could not imagine going through such a difficult time with anyone else.

Hass is amazing, he really helped us resolve issues that have been pending for years. After two entities and a law firm, we found Hass through a referral. He managed to take care of the tax debt down to 20% of what was owed. Very professional and responsive. Thanks!

The attorney Mr. Bashir was very professional. He handled our partnership documents when another partner was leaving our practice, and we were inducting another member in our company. He also handled our new office lease issue with the landlord much better and advantageous than we had previously. I would recommend Mr. Bashir based on my experience with the corporate matters. He was referred by another partner who was represented by another attorney in his Firm.

I fully trust Mr. Malech and endorse him! Trusting someone with your life is what happens when you retain a lawyer. Mr. Malech thinks like a philosopher, explains clearly like a great teacher, uses warm humor, and gives an even-keeled and honest assessment of the possible scenarios. Moreover, he knows the court system inside and out. Mr. Malech's mastery of the law, solid preparation and keen attention to detail led to a great outcome. Mr. Malech and his team are responsive, respectful, and empathetic. He also moves at a fast pace to outmaneuver the other side. Take a look at his Youtube series, "Ask Lloyd." You will see Mr. Malech's sharp communication skills in action!

Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Bethesda, Maryland?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
