Jane is a very experienced, knowledgeable and resourceful immigration lawyer. Jane helped my family and I navigate a very complex situation that had many moving parts. Jane knew the exact process to follow, but more importantly helped to walk me through the process and explained it to me so that it was easy to understand. Jane provided checklists and resource documents that ensured I knew exactly what I needed to and when. Additionally Jane went out of her way to make sure that I was fully prepared, both prior to and after my embassy visit. I would not hesitate to recommend Jane to anyone looking for visa assistance.

It is my pleasure to write this recommendation for Attorney Jane Chiang. Jane was hired to represent me for my citizenship application in 2011. She has been diligently obtained all necessary documents to substantiate my case, which there were complications involved with my working for a US global bank in their overseas branch for an extended number of years. She was pleased that I have filed all my US tax returns while I was abroad. She is very focused and organized in every step of the application process. Her capability to help me become a proud US citizen was commendable as it involved not only the legal knowledge but also the human aspect as well. Jane has excellent interpersonal skills and I feel totally comfortable working with her and following her guidance. With her help, I am able to fulfill my American's dreams, such as home ownership here, kids receiving great US educations, and pursuing my business venture in this land of opportunities. She is a trusted partner that I am retaining her again for my family’s citizenship application. I have no hesitation in recommending Jane to anyone who may need of her service.

I applied for an H1-B and Sara made the whole process incredibly smooth and easy. Comparing my application to that of my friends, I feel so lucky to have chosen Sara! She knows exactly what to do at every step of the application, she responds quickly to emails and she's always happy to give advice. Couldn't recommend her more!

I was referred to Ray Watson having left a Multinational Technical company and joined a technology start up company with 13 angel investors. Despite holding multiple degrees and an MBA, we had reluctance and difficulties being a startup without history. Roy was magnificent for being aware of the options, how to handle the difficult situation and for guiding us round the obstacles caused by inflexibility of the "standard" immigration bureaucracy. His creativity and willingness to create options is what stands him aside from other classical lawyers and always friendly, optimistic (and with reason) he is a true gem to anyone wanting Immigration. I would sign him in a heart beat should I ever need a visa or immigration documents again. Pity we lost Katelyn. Dr David G, BSc, MSc, PhD, MBA.

I have an H1B issues with a strange employment loss. I spoke with few Lawyers and everyone scared me about the situation instead of telling me the options and what's the best possible option I can do at this time. My friend referred Mr Roy Watson. I called his office and he answered the call right away. He asked me the every single detail of my situation and provided me the best possible options to deal with. This gave a real boost and helped me understand the whole situation. His knowledge on immigration related issues is peaks. I recommend him 100%

Her first expression was outstanding. She listened us very attentively as we were not good at explanation in English. She understood our topics and start very simple way to reply. She was following our expression or body language as well, so was able to catch up our conversation, always she let us talk frequently, she looked all our papers and shared her opinion, finally she suggest me if I want I can move forward myself with this issue instead of spending thousands dollars by paying a lawyer, this part made me surprised, and proved her she is very honest. According to her professionalism I would like to rate her five star.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Cambridge, Massachusetts?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
