Sonia and her associate Rachel provided us compassionate, trauma-informed representation when we needed it most. They got us what we needed and working with them was a pleasure. Give Cannon Law a call, their quality service will speak for itself.

Sonia was actually recommended to me by another attorney who felt she would be a better fit for my complex case. One of my coworkers said they also knew someone that used her services. She puts in a level of quality and care that I honestly haven’t seen anywhere else in this field or another. I appreciate Her hard-work and honesty! Rachel was also very helpful and did an amazing job at the last hearing. Both ladies are incredible lawyers! I honestly hope anything great that can happen to a person, happens to them. Sonia is a blessing

Sonia was a blessing and such an angel. She helped me so much and invested so much time on my case. She listened to my concerns, offered wonderful advice and was there for me through every step. I will never be able to thank her enough for all she has done for me and I highly recommend her to anyone who needs an excellent attorney.

Read the reviews and I was very hopeful I could get guidance from cannon law. Everyone said how caring and helpful they were. That was not my case. Very rude on the phone wouldn’t even let me ask questions to see if it was something that was worth perusing. Short, cut off and not willing to listen to me. Very disappointed.

Nick is honestly one of the best lawyers that i ever met .My family and i have used tons of attorneys through out the years and no one is better than Nick. More than being a good attorney that judges throughout michigan respect , but he’s a good human being that actually cares about his clients even after he’s done with them, which is rare. Thank you Nick for everything !

I needed an attorney in order to have my drivers license restored, after speaking with a few found on the internet I spoke with Nick. It did not take long into the phone conversation he was very easy to talk to. After meeting him at his office I hired him to assist in my license restoration. He was professional and lawyerly yet easy to talk to and understand to the average guy if that makes sense. Anyone who has dealt with a license restoration knows it can be trying at best, my case was no exception. Nick took care of all stumbling blocks, kept me up to date on proceedings, and promptly returned every one of the several calls I made to him. At the very end there was a hiccup and again he took care of the issue, and did it fast! Thanks to him I now have full driving privileges. There are a lot of good attorneys out there, Mr. Backos is one of the best IMO.

Ok. Nicholas Backos is hands down, by a landslide, the best criminal defense attorney in Southeast, Michigan. He is a Saint and I don't know what I would have done without his aid. Thanks again, Nick!

I have contacted Mr. Yaldo several times regarding various condominium related issues. Each time, I was either guided or equipped with the right information to resolve the problem quickly. Most recent, another condo issue that I wasn’t able to remedy on my own. Mr. Yaldo took the bull by the horns and had things resolved to my satisfaction in no time. Actually, Mr. Yaldo not only fixed my issue, the outcome was beneficial to the whole condominium community. Many thanks Scott!

I've been an expert witness for 14 years. I recently sat through an entire trial with Scott. I've seen more attorneys than the average person (dozens) arguing cases. He won hands down getting a substantial judgement in favor of his client going the extra mile every step of the way. I'm getting nothing for this review and now live in another state so I am not looking forward to future business from Scott, rather I'm being totally sincere and disinterested. He's truly a gifted litigator and comes across to the jury in a way I've never seen before. He didn't even refer me on this case rather I was already an acquaintance of his client who hired me directly herself. Scott is truly brilliant and a man of honor and good character. Hire him!

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Birmingham, Michigan?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
