Erica DeAngelis is one of the best attorneys that I have ever come across in my lifetime. This is a strong statement for me to make because I have friends and family that are attorneys. Erica was my attorney through a very contentious divorce. My ex-wife wanted to battle with me on every point and made the divorce process last way longer than it should have. While going through the divorce process, I was an emotional wreck because of custody and property split. Every time I would lose my composure, Erica would explain all possible scenarios and had a plan for each one. My confidence in Erica grew more throughout the divorce process. There were things that were revealed during my divorce, that were not my most flattering moments. Erica was shock-proof, professional and developed a plan of defense. Erica has a combination of personal attributes and professional skills that makes her a very savvy attorney. Being a smart attorney, she was able to counter everything that my ex-wife’s attorney threw at us. Erica is nice, personal, professional, down-to-earth personable and simply just a cool person. I have stuck with her as she has changed law firms. I have recommended her to friends and family that have hired her as their attorney. And last but not least, I walk with an air of confidence that I can face any life situation because I have Erica DeAngelis as an attorney. I highly recommend her to anyone that would require an attorney for criminal defense, civil litigation and family law.

Erica provided outstanding support for my divorce case. She was professional, thorough, and always ready to defend my position. Not only did she ensure I received a very generous settlement, she also provided me with emotional support throughout that very difficult, painful process. I highly recommend her from both a professional and personal position.

Erica went above and beyond by actually taking the time to not only hear me out, but actually listen to and understand where I was coming from. It's clear from my experience that Erica truly cares about her clients needs and advocates in their best interest. I highly recommend Erica if you're looking for an above average, compassionate, and results driven Attorney.

I needed an attorney in order to have my drivers license restored, after speaking with a few found on the internet I spoke with Nick. It did not take long into the phone conversation he was very easy to talk to. After meeting him at his office I hired him to assist in my license restoration. He was professional and lawyerly yet easy to talk to and understand to the average guy if that makes sense. Anyone who has dealt with a license restoration knows it can be trying at best, my case was no exception. Nick took care of all stumbling blocks, kept me up to date on proceedings, and promptly returned every one of the several calls I made to him. At the very end there was a hiccup and again he took care of the issue, and did it fast! Thanks to him I now have full driving privileges. There are a lot of good attorneys out there, Mr. Backos is one of the best IMO.

I have contacted Mr. Yaldo several times regarding various condominium related issues. Each time, I was either guided or equipped with the right information to resolve the problem quickly. Most recent, another condo issue that I wasn’t able to remedy on my own. Mr. Yaldo took the bull by the horns and had things resolved to my satisfaction in no time. Actually, Mr. Yaldo not only fixed my issue, the outcome was beneficial to the whole condominium community. Many thanks Scott!

I've been an expert witness for 14 years. I recently sat through an entire trial with Scott. I've seen more attorneys than the average person (dozens) arguing cases. He won hands down getting a substantial judgement in favor of his client going the extra mile every step of the way. I'm getting nothing for this review and now live in another state so I am not looking forward to future business from Scott, rather I'm being totally sincere and disinterested. He's truly a gifted litigator and comes across to the jury in a way I've never seen before. He didn't even refer me on this case rather I was already an acquaintance of his client who hired me directly herself. Scott is truly brilliant and a man of honor and good character. Hire him!

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Birmingham, Michigan?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
