I scheduled their consultation expecting to discuss my situation a little, see if I needed assistance from an attorney and was hella skeptical about a "free" family law consultation because it's pretty much standard practice to pay a couple hundred dollars for that. I'm fine with it, expected them to introduce that option, but I tell this guy that I want custody and child support, I've already filed a complaint for separate maintenance, I wanted to talk to the lawyer about the things I asked for and if I needed to fully hire her, I was glad to. But this man stops me here and says "how do you expect to get custody and child support from someone you're still legally married to!?" Friends, I am floored. The whole point of a complaint for separate maintenance is to do just that, settle these matters when you live SEPARATELY but aren't ready for divorce. The actual attorney herself has a YouTube video on this very subject, and how you should get a separate maintenance order before you move out. This is why I wanted to talk to her. I just can't bring myself to do so when her staff doesn't know the very basics of family law though.

Got the work done, but took a very long time and it was extremely expensive. I needed child support (which I now have) but it cost me over $4,000 to get $500 a month. Custody was already figured out during the divorce, and they drafted a lot of motions that were not needed (and I was charged for them). I am happy it is over but it took 8 months and 4 grand.. as a single mom on a very limited budget, this took all my savings after paying a $6,000 retainer. I told them on our first call and meeting that price was a huge deal, because I'm very very limited on funds. I was reassured multiple times, but in the end the price was very high. I even had to have an itemized bill sent to me (on a few occassions) and it had blown through my original $3,000 retainer in no time at all. I was told there was some errors on the billing and they corrected some, so I don't know how much trust can be put in their billing system. Especially because I had to go through the bill and question a lot of line items. Every email that they sent me or I sent them was $30. Every phone call regardless of time was billed as a half hour. I was even invoiced for them calling me to set up a call... Basically, my super simple case ended up being a 16 page invoice. Again, this was strictly for child support only. No agreements, no custody, no divorce. Just a modification to child support. It was incredibly expensive. In the end, it is what it is and I have child support and the legal documents behind it. But the toll on my anxiety and bank account was very high. I would maybe recommend then if you need to go to court. But not for anything as simple as my case.
