I joined Maier Gutierrez & Associates (MGA) through the Boyd School of Law On-Campus Interview process. I was employed as a Law Clerk at MGA from January 2022–January 2023. That was my 2L Spring and Summer, and 3L Fall. My role at MGA allowed me to develop my legal thinking and writing skills while I was still in school. Every day I was challenged to interact with the law and move the ball forward on actual cases. Sometimes that would call for doing legal research and writing memos on how to use procedure or case law to our client’s advantage. Sometimes that would be participating in trial strategy meetings. Usually though, I would spend my time drafting legal documents like mediation briefs or case pleadings. The most rewarding part of my time at MGA was seeing the work I produced get in front of judges during actual litigation. Of course, that was after thoughtful review and excellent feedback from MGA’s brilliant partners and associates. However, the final product was always similar enough to my draft that I felt like I was really making a difference on our client’s cases. The litigation I am most proud to have been a part of was a personal injury case that went to trial and resulted in a $5.9 million jury verdict in MGA’s favor. I was involved in several functions of this case, including pre-trial evidentiary motions, voir dire, and expert witness examination preparation. Best of all, I was able to turn one the motions in limine I worked on into my favorite legal writing sample. The entire firm, Jason and Joey in particular, clearly takes significant pride in developing their law clerks. Seemingly every week I was being introduced to something new—mediation and arbitration, focus groups, discovery conferences, hearings—the list could go on and on. The firm always sought out ways to get me to see more things to develop more experiences in my time at MGA. I am especially proud to have secured a Nevada Supreme Court clerkship while working at MGA. The advice and support I got from the firm’s partners was crucial to that opportunity, and MGA’s sterling reputation could only have helped my application. The culture and working environment at MGA is among the best of any place I have worked. From day one I was welcomed as part of the team, and at every step I was treated with nothing but respect. The firm’s administration was always flexible with my school and personal schedules. MGA’s considerate nature made it easy to fit working there part time into my busy academic calendar. I strongly recommend working as a law clerk at MGA to any law student who is looking for an opportunity to immediately use their legal thinking and writing skills in a supportive and stimulating environment.
