Nobody likes lawyers, until you need a lawyer. Knowing that I had Garrett on my side has made owning a business a much more pleasant experience. He knows corporate law and he makes sure I'm doing what I need to be doing to run an ethical, legal business. He is also not afraid to tell me when I'm making a bad decision or something that might hurt me down the line. I would absolutely recommend Garrett and his team. And I do - on a regular basis.

Garrett Sutton is the reason I can't make lawyer jokes anymore. He is trustworthy, smart, and ethical. Not much room for jokes there. He has helped me incorporate two businesses, written articles for magazines I've edited, and helped me form my publishing company, Lucky Bat Books. He has been there with patient answers for my most ridiculous questions and has always made me feel as if this business stuff is something I can handle. He not only formed my corporation, he guided me through writing contracts and establishing billing regimen, and even recommended someone to do my taxes. I would trust him with any legal matter. Garrett's kindness is well known in my community and is a major reason I originally sought him out. I interviewed him for a story on autism because of his charity work with Sierra Kids Foundation, which provides money for treatment of autism for families who otherwise wouldn't be able to afford it. I'm glad I did. As a writer and publisher himself, he has given me so much useful advice he ought to write a book. In fact, he has. Several. I've read them all. You simply can't do better than Garrett Sutton. And that's no joke.

Garret Sutton and his staff made the process of creating LLCs for my businesses in Nevada and Wyoming painless, quick and easy. Garrett gave me terrific counsel on the benefits of going with an LLC structure vs. an S-Corp, given my specific circumstances. He and his staff are the models of professionalism - they certainly know their stuff, and they are extremely nice and friendly. Having Garrett and his staff handle all the setup paperwork and processes, as well as maintain my corporate registrations, gives me tremendous peace of mind, allowing me to concentrate on running and growing my business. I HIGHLY recommend Garrett Sutton and his first-rate staff.

Garrett Sutton is a well versed business attorney that easily puts himself in the clinet's position when assisting in decision making. He's not the sort of attorney that automatically wants to sue and blame others. For anyone that's looking for an attorney has has decades of business experience, Garrett's the go-to person. His sage advice has been invaluable to the many business and entities that I've been involved with and once again, he has a very well grounded advice and is really good at avoiding all the landmines that one encounters in the business world.

Travis Clark was phenomenal in putting together my divorce package after I was served. He listened to what I would like to see happen. We developed a game plan that he perfectly executed. Worked with the opposing attorney to resolve conflicts and provide clarification on matters of concern. Travis's advise was invaluable. In the hour before seeing the judge a big last minute detail had to be worked out. It was expertly handled to my benefit. In the court proceedings Travis worked with the court to ensure I received terms beneficial to myself and my future. Very, very satisfied with the outcome of the divorce proceedings, far better than anything I had expected. Well done Travis, I am in your debt. Thank you.

Kim Surratt is not only a great lawyer, she's a good person. She walked me through the hell that was my divorce, counseled me through the difficult decisions about the children, custody, child support, etc. and helped keep from going crazy when everything in my life was upside down. Divorces suck. There's no way around that. Having someone on my side that was empathetic to what I was going through, but was able to maintain a business mind about the whole thing was crucial to me making good decisions and not fighting just to fight because I was pissed. I've been back several times because of custody issues, and she's helped me navigate the ridiculousness of a crazy ex who happens to be the mother of my kids. I honestly don't think anyone could have done a better job.

Kim Surratt is a very special person to me. From the moment Kim took on my son's case, she worked so hard to achieve the right outcome. I believe that Kim saved my son's life, and strengthened our entire family. Our custody case was very difficult and lasted eight years. Kim was by my side, always giving me good advice, helping me have the strength to continue the battle, and saw our case to a proper final conclusion. I will always be grateful that I had Kim as my attorney.

Lance White has been my lawyer for over three years and has done an EXCELLENT job in not only fighting for me but also PROTECTING my interests! He is very straightforward and has told me what to expect each step of the way. He has kept me informed of each step and what the options were and what the risks were. There were no empty promises made just to keep the client happy, which I know sometimes occurs when seeking counsel. He is hard-working, thorough, professional, and insightful, especially when it comes to complex legal issues, and exceeds your expectations. I highly recommend him for any family court needs you might have.

Fabulous, thorough, and unbelievably knowledgeable in their field. Lance took care of my divorce with children and an EPO. HE not only took most the stress off my shoulders, but legitimately got me every single thing I requested, including primary custody, child support, and alimony. So impressed with his thoroughness and even more impressed with the outcome.

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Reno, Nevada?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
